My favorite thing in this video is the control, intention, fluidity, and gentleness of Richard's movements. Even simply placing down a brush, looks like the Ballet! It wonderful to see an artisan who's is so dedicated to his craft that even when he doesn't need to use care he still does. Wonderful!

Conservators have to behave this way. If you're working with objects this fragile, the gentle movements have to be a second nature

Does there exist a museum where artifacts used in museum conservation go? A museum museum?

I work in a museum and sometimes we will find old things (like a chair, for example) and we'll have to try to figure out if it's a donation that was never accessioned or if it's just old museum property. lol

1:45 If anyone is wanting to look for that specific letter opener made from ivorine, the one Richard uses is made by Kynoch (gun cartridge manufacturer) from the 1920s to 1930s from celluloid ivory.

I reckon the Brushes would be fantastic for brushing those Ear-Shaped Mics and the Letter Opener must be lovely for Soap Carvings; but the Dental Tools seems excessive. RU-vid Recommend: Dental Roleplay Me: NOPEĘËĒĖÈÉÊeęëēėèéê

I do fossil prep and I think anyone in Conversation loves talking about tools. Simple items that are incredibly important to the job. I am currently researching adhesive and probably have spent 18+ hours on it. Researching what is available and what each adhesives properties are.

Good job guys, this one is fantastic and pretty thorough. I'd love to see more on his process, or an edited start to finish, so we could see the skills used throughout each step. Thanks for what you do! One of my most favorite channels.

We do bookbinding in school; we got some very specialized presses and tools there as well. The giant press your showed here, looks very similar to the one we have - but we use different modifiers to layer parts of books in between, sometimes it is even stone bricks.

So Brady, time for another channel? I suggest "Conservatorphile" where you just put videos of people restoring paintings and other artwork 😊

For anyone interested in the glass spray bottle, they can be had on ebay for less than twenty dollars shipped from china. Just search for 'lab glass spray bottle'.

Doesn't the plastic brush have a metal wire to hold the bristles like all toothbrushes? Anyway, it would be interesting to see how ultrasonic humidification works.

@HebaruSan

If he retires, does the special letter opener go with him or stay at the museum?
@thenextstepp
@thenextstepp 5 лет назад
HebaruSan I'm guessing it belongs to him but he would probably offer it up for the next in line and whoever would be following in his footsteps would probably never use it again placing too much value on it. I've had retiring architects pass on their tools to me and I find myself adding them to my display rather than putting them into the everyday use bin. Even simple items such as these can hold immense value when passed along. For example, I still have the first architectural drawing I ever created that was given to me by my drafting teacher when I graduated. At the time drafting was just a really cool class that gave me a break from things like history and English but ultimately ended up being my career.

In the modern world, where everything is made-for-purpose, it's delightfully odd seeing someone who needs to take tools meant for some other use, and repurpose them because the field is so niche, that no major manufacturer would ever mass-produce these instruments. Being clever and having imagination really does pay off!

You know stirring sauce pan... If you really desperately need one. It wouldn't be a big thing for a good fabricator to make one from stainless steel. Then installing a heater and a motor in to it wouldn't really be a big thing.
@raykent3211
@raykent3211 5 лет назад
Yeah it seems like a fuss about nothing. I'd use an ordinary Pyrex (glass) cook dish and if we're seriously worried about contamination, ask a glass blower to make a stirrer (just two pieces of flat glass joined at an angle onto a vertical glass rod). Add a geared down motor and put it on a hotplate. I wonder how much these are selling for?
