It's interesting that they want to tighten requirements for Italians by blood but have no intention to stop people just showing up by boat.

I am not in full agreement with this proposed legislation because it attempts to change the legal concept of citizenship “de jure sanguinis.” Italian descendants are not applying for citizenship, in which case parliament can legislate requirements, but recognition of Italian citizenship already acquired by current Italian law .This being said, there is merit to the concept of a cultural connection to Italy Including language skills, knowledge of Italian history and current events. However, a cultural connection is very different from the legal concept of citizenship.

I have residency, I can pass a language test, and I am only 3 generations removed. What’s absurd is that Italy won’t let me, a person genetically linked to this country, apply for citizenship because my great-grandfather had to take American citizenship to be married there. So, to the Italian government, he “cut” his familial link to Italy. As a Sicilian, after Garibaldi’s takeover of Sicily, there weren’t a lot of choices…hence why half of the Kingdom of 2 Sicilies had immigrated to the US by 1924… It’s really silly that the Italian government is punishing genetic descendants from gaining citizenship when they are loosing 52% of their laureati every year…

I was in the same situation. I’m Sicilian and my father, grandfather, etc all born in Palermo migrated to the USA in 1962. They’re were one of the most notorious criminals in the USA. When my twin and I applied, our birth certificates show our father was born in Italia. So when we went through the process, they totally skipped the part to check if he had naturalized. There were tons of fbi/gov court records, news papers, etc that verified that my father and family were in the United States so we were granted Italian citizenship rather quickly lol. We had friends that applied through the consulate in San Francisco without any issues. We also know a lot of people who had many issues through the NYC consulate and LA. I guess it’s basically a coin toss and some luck in this process. Don’t give up!

Italian citizenship recognition rests on the foundation of the transmission of citizenship by blood. The part of this proposal introducing an Italian anguage requirement is new and is unrelated to citizenship by blood. An Italian citizen can be born anywhere and not need to speak Italian. If they resided in Italy then they would need to speak Italian but that is a different matter than citizenship recognition.

Fine, you know what? My Great Great Grandfather was the original Italian lineage I have. Maybe Italy should stop taking in complete foreigners and calling them citizens when they don't have thousands of years of ancestry in Italy. I can't understand why Italy would want to make it harder for us to return. Why Italy is so eager to take Africans, people from other parts of Europe or Asia as immigrants and call them more Italian than people whose family was there for thousands of years before a few generations deviated. If that's the Italy they want, with a skilled labor shortage and so many willing and even affluent Italians by Descent that could contribute, well I think they'll find out how that policy goes in the long run. I am deeply disappointed in the way Italy has come to view their own children.

Requiring residency for citizenship by descent for anything past 3 generations is no longer citizenship by descent, but citizenship by residency. It would basically be doing after with citizenship by descent for anything past your great grandfather.

Hi, i am from the UK but my grandmother was Italian and moved to the UK in 1957, never renounced her citizenship, died in 1969 and returned to be buried in Italy. All of her children including my mother were born after 1948. Now the fact that my grandmother is buried in her birth place, does this effect the efficency of the process? Grazie

I agree with the language test requirement. My question is could there potentially be a change as to the dates? I don't know exactly when my Great Grandfather renounced Italian citizenship. If an Italian woman married a foreigner in Italy, not in another country, did she also lose her citizenship in the same way a woman who married a foreigner abroad did? Also, under the UK law at the time, would she have automatically become a British citizen if she married an Englishman outside of the UK?

I'm trying to get the Italian citizenship by descent correct. Please some help: My great-grandfather was born in Sicily in 1892 and came to America in 1910. He wasn't naturalized. He married another unnaturalized Italian in 1915 and gave birth to my grandfather in 1918. My grandfather married an Italian descent American and gave birth in 1944 to my mother (an only child). My mother was impregnated by an Italian man but they never married, and his name wasn't put on my birth certificate. Based on this narrative, might I be eligible to be an Italian citizen by descent?
