David Cleveland talks about the making of 'The Prof' for the TV series Vision On starring Tony Hart and Pat Keysell.
The films were made by David, Tony Amies and David Wyatt in the 1970s using stop-frame animation and all effects done 'in camera'. With todays digital post-editing technology this would not have been a problem but these were made using 16mm film and shots often had to be timed to music.

I didn't remember a lot from Vision On but this guy I do remember. He stood out for me. As a kid I liked his hair and face. Also anyone called "The Prof" got my attention. Some of these sequences are very inventive, clever and funny and looking at it now I am quite impressed.

And all done in camera on film. I know the producer for The Goodies used to tap David for ideas and the Kitten Kong sequence seems to use a lot of David's tricks.

Always loved the surreal humour, as the jokes were far less predictable. Together with stop motion and the excellent choice in musical accompaniment, the short clips were the highlight of every Vision On episode for me.

In about 1977 or 78 I was a student studying graphic design at Norwich School of Art. Technically those were rather primitive times and I had occasion to go over to the University of East Anglia, the UEA and use their much more sophisticated Audio Visual equipment. As I was being escorted to the department I needed, I turned in youthful amazement when I saw none other than the Prof from Vision On, David Cleveland. My escort saw the direction of my gaze, turned to me and said “Yes he is and don’t mention it to him.” Apparently he was working at the UEA as an film maker.

You are correct although film conservation has become a big part of his life. A very unassuming and talented man with that lovely suffolk accent.

@@vwthings that’s an accent, which like the Norfolk accent and dialect is unfortunately dying out.

Interesting to hear the Prof's voice. The music used for the Prof films was also the theme of an ITV daytime show called Jokers Wild.

David did some shorts for Anglia TV, but their work (as a team) was mostly for VO. Cleveland worked at what used to be Ealing as a young man, editing works by Milligan, Sellers etc which clearly influenced the Prof character and helped in terms of editing technique but most effects were don 'in camera' during shooting. Remember, this is all done with film not video so the timing is astounding really.

Oooh man did I really see the one where he got on a chair that was going past and got eaten by a piano, or am I just imagining that particular childhood horror?
