Emma getting bullied: 😃 Emma breaking up with Alyssa: 😃 Emma after the fake prom: 😃
@sherlockholmes5211
@sherlockholmes5211 3 года назад
Emma was actually devastated after the fake prom. She cried, broke up with Alyssa and left the Broadway team. She wasn't happy about getting bullied she just found a good solution which was to stay calm as she sings a whole song about it. Breaking up with Alyssa, also was not a reason for her to be jubilant, as you suggest, however she ended a relationship in which she was hurt, technically it was for her benefit.

What really bothered me wasn't the stereotyping of gay men (although, I see your point), but the added plot of him forgiving his mom. It was awful and catered to straight people. In the musical, Barry being estranged from his mom is a cautionary tale thrust against Alyssia's mom (this is what happens etc.). In the movie he forgives her in a blink of an eye and welcomes her into his life...

@finnthefish3328
@finnthefish3328 3 года назад
@@soyboy6953 That angered me so bad! let Barry call his mother in his own time because it affects him and it is is personal life. The movie mostly centered on comforting straight people and making them feel good for invading lgbtq+ people's life if it was made with "good intentions". Like what if the mom still wasn't accepting? that would scar and haunt Barry forever.
@nanalove3819
@nanalove3819 3 года назад
Yeah! I was shocked. I don't get how they could have this very powerful scene when Barry explained to Dee Dee is passed and when I could felt his trauma and showed his parents don't deserve redemption... Just to throw that away and gave him mom a redemption. *How is that makes sense* Even when the mum arrives Barry makes point about why he can't forgive her, but she cried and say she missed him so he forgave her? It felt so out of character when it happened. Plus you notice it is the mum, they have to follow the idea that mums love their children no matter what, but dad can't accept their gay son. And the worst part is that Dee Dee is the reason they reconcile. Barry told her he doesn't want to see his parents ever again but the straight woman ended up knowing better than the gay man how he feels about his homophobic parents who tried to send him to a conversion therapy. How. Did. That. Made. It. To. The. Script.
@hatsterical2475
@hatsterical2475 3 года назад
I saw it more as, you know, hope not being lost for someone who has had it go bad between them and their parents because of wrong ideals. It made me cry, I personally thought it was done really well. He was not wanting to hear from her, and she knew she should have done more, but she wanted him back in her life, and he realised he wanted the same thing. I know it wasn't very good for the character who called his mum for him to have done that, but idk, it stirred a lot of emotions in me. He didn't really forgive her in the blink of an eye, and like, idk, it made me happy, and I'm not straight.

I’m stunned they cut out Alyssa and Emma’s part of “You Happened.” I haven’t seen the musical, but I saw the performance they did on The View. For me, that song is all about the contrast between the m/f couples and Alyssa and Emma. I loved the staging where they “flip” the perspective and have Emma and Alyssa behind the bleachers in the forefront and the other kids in the background. I love how Alyssa and Emma sing about how they both made each other’s lives better. It’s just such a good song, and cutting out Alyssa and Emma’s part seems so completely misguided.

I think there clearly needed to be clearer communication between Ryan Murphy and Jo Ellen Pellman because it made her come across as amateur, which is a shame; but I low-key do think that it’s her shortcoming. It IS the job of an actor to take directors notes and make them truthful and believable - Directors don’t think like Actors. In hindsight, Happy and Optimistic should have been Empowered and Determined on Ryan Murphy’s part, It would’ve translated waaaay better for the camera. There was a stream of the play through the national theatre website at one point and I think it may now be on The Show Must Go On RU-vid channel. It’s a play not a musical so it doesn’t rely on the cheesey musical theatre acting that musicals usually have (and I’m saying that as a huge musical theatre fan). CW: Homophobia Can we talk about how Kerry Washington's character completely flips from homophobe to supportive at the end? I enjoyed the movie for the most part, but this bothered me. As someone with a very homophobic parent, I know there's NO WAY someone who felt that way the entire movie could see their child kissing someone of the same sex and smile and clap in response. I'm not saying Alyssa's mom will never change and become accepting, but it's really unrealistic to think that it would happen the same day Alyssa comes out to her. The end just kind of felt like a "congrats guys, we've cured homophobia" moment and it was kind of unsettling.

Did Emma tell everyone she was taking her girlfriend to prom when they announced it? How did the committee know she was going to take a girl? Why didn't she just turn up with the girl? What also annoyed me, Emma should have went to the prom everyone else was at, it would show she was strong-willed and did not give one about what others thought about her. Finally, u know the song with bullies in the mall, they changed proper quick, cuz if I was them I would need something more then just a little singing and dancing, I would be like "whatever, imma still gonna bully her, nothings changed". Btw I would not bully someone, but they changed way too quick
@bobjenko
@bobjenko 3 года назад
On the Emma part, what I see as probably happening is that, everyone knew she was gay and someone probably went, "Oh, Emma you're gonna be so lonely at the prom lmao" and then Emma being Emma went "actually I'm taking my girlfriend", then everyone flipped their shit and we get the start of the movie/musical. On Emma not going to the actual prom, she does explain why she's not going to after Barry says they should go. And with the "Love Thy Neighbour" scene, yes it's abrupt, but it does need to be taken into account that this is adapted from a stage play and they don't have a lot of time to work with lest the movie drag on even more than it already did in places. And sometimes you do just have a bombshell moment that makes you change your perception quickly. Though I do also understand what you're saying.

I think what people forget a lot of the time is that Ryan Murphy didn’t actually write or direct most of Glee...other people did. He just came up with the original story and put his name/wallet to it all. I’m pretty sure he only directed like 8/9 episodes of glee and wrote less than 50 of them so when you say “how did the man who gave us We Found Love in the swimming pool make this?!” It’s because he probably didn’t make that Glee scene

Things I agree with you about: 1. Them cutting "You Happened" short. It is my favorite song of the show and I was really angry they cut it short. 2. Emma and Alyssa needing more screen time. This is something I have against the stage version too and why I love the novel version. 3. Although I believe that as a stage character, Barry should be able to be played by anyone, I can see why Cordon's performance can be seen as offensive. 4. Ariana Debose is a queen. Things I disagree with: 1. It being too long. I actually liked the storylines they added to the show. 2. Emma's dress. As this was a point in the stage show, she wanted to wear a tux but Barry thought she would steel the show more by wearing a dress. He sees he is wrong by the end and she gets to wear what she originally wanted to for the inclusive prom. 3. Nicole Kidman was perfect for Angie, I just wish we got more of her. I'm sorry you were disappointed but I loved this film, I mean not as much as I loved the stage version, but I didn't think the film was that bad as an adaptation.

I suffer from anxiety which I would never have been able to fully control without both the help of my girlfriend and theatre. It’s criminally underrated and its a song that I’m so glad came at a time when I needed it. Other than that, I loved The Prom, personally it’s been one of the only movie musicals I have loved since Into the Woods and Hairspray and when my girlfriend and my best friend who I met from theatre watched it, they both loved it too. I see a lot of comments saying that the actress who played Emma wasn’t super great and honestly I agree, I don’t think it was the smartest choice to grab an inexperienced actor and throw them into the main role. I think Ryan was trying to make her the new Chris Colfer, he had barely any acting experience but Ryan took a chance on him and he ended up being such a talented and amazing actor but I think taking a chance on an inexperienced actor in what he thought would be a limited series is a lot safer then having an inexperienced actress in a movie yk what i’m saying. I just don’t think it was the smartest thing to give the main role to someone who honestly had no experience.

That was actually the first movie in which I think James Corden did a good job and, shockingly, but in my opinion he was one of the best part of this movie. I had chills and cried a lot during his dialogue with Meryl in their hotel room. Also his interactions with his (character's) mother where really heartwarming. Like, I'm so tired of bashing James for literal breathing at this point. Yeah, he's done some questionable things and had some awful inputs, but that was actually a decent role. Here, you made me defend James Corden. Ehhh. Other than that, I actually kind of liked the movie - it was very self-aware and did not try to be the breakout musical (that was my problem with The Greatest Showman which just tried too much) and I am okay with it. Unfortunately, I did not find the songs any special, but that is my problem with many similar musicals if this type, like Be More Chill for instance, where the songs are pretty forgettable and do not really work outside of the context of the show. Another downside for me was the fact that the story did not focus on Emma at all and that the actress playing her was rather wooden, despite having lovely voice. I did not get any chemistry between her and Alyssa neither, although the actress playing the latter was fine and had more life to her character as well as face expressions (Emma's permanent grin bothered me, tbh). Overall, it was glitter, tears and more glitter. Not groundbreaking, but a nice movie to watch on a lazy Sunday morning.

I actually loved the lighting, it really triggered the theatrical suspension of disbelief. Like a musical in a theatre works because we can already clearly see everything is fake, so we will also accept the fact that they just started singing, while still believing the story. In a movie if everything is super realistic, it’s weird when they start singing a song. It’s like in Mamma Mia here we go again, one of the few things I liked was that the some of the songs were edited like they were music videos, like, we know they aren’t singing so why still try making it look realistic, it can only make it more confusing. Also, who decided casting Keegan-Michael Key in a musical was a good idea?

I had fun watching the film, but my biggest issue was how sloppily put together it was as an adaption. It seemed like Murphy went for style over substance. Like in the stage show the whole story of the town, is that's it's a small town hit hard by a recession and job loss looking for a scape goat, not the very rich big town we see in the film. And I can understand the switch if you wanted to make the statement oh rich towns are bigoted too. But they didn't change the book at all from the original so it doesn't make sense. All the jokes about K-Mart and Applebees don't make any sense b/c this is a wealthy town. The kids are hanging out in an LA mall not outside a 7-11. Just really lazy adaption imho

I've been waiting for someone to talk about how much a bad accent pulls you out of a serious moment! I think having a bad accent just makes the character seem immediately completely untrue, as something as natural as their normal voice feels forced, and after hearing it you sort of can't take them seriously anymore
