Not only do salmon eggs work well but inflated nitecrawlers and crickets on the kern river . You need too let your salmon eggs hard up a little with the lid off and they will stay on your hook much better ,just good advice. From a old man who fished the kern for over 50 years .
Yeah, I love using inflated crawlers on the river! I usually have two jars of eggs with me, one hard and one soft. A lot of times when the fish are sensitive, I use the soft eggs for a quicker hook set and sometimes I'll even combine them with the soft eggs covering the point of the hook. Crickets are phenomenal this time of year and any grasshoppers you can find along the way. Thanks for the tips!
Single egg hooks work better and you will go through a fraction of the eggs. the lighter hook will give a more natural presentation with less snags. James market always has them. 2nd tip unless they just stocked, fish as far from the road as you can. I was still catching limits when the hadn't stocked in a couple years. Another great bait are the periwinkles and their free! Wait one last tip when possible fish on the other side of the river from the road!
I appreciate the tips, thanks! I've never thought of using the Periwinkles before. That's a great idea! I don't tend to use the single hooks in the faster water, because the egg tends to fall off and I tend to get more hits when there are more eggs. And I also agree on moving as far away from the road as possible. There's a lot of good spots on the river that many people won't walk to.
@@RoadandReel I never fish the fast water only use it for presentation so the bait is at the same speed. plus the #16 you can usually encase the whole hook inside a premium egg. on fluoro makes a great presentation. Amazing how people won't walk 5 minutes to get into fish.( reminds me of guys who spend $500 on a multi day and don't have fresh line or lubricated drags SMH) I would say I catch more on the single hooks, now I use nothing else. Tight lines. Will be there next month for Whiskey flat days! : )
I have never fished salmon eggs, I have bought them from time to time over the years, infect I think I still have some in my old tackle box.. but I just never felt confident using them, now I know how to, I’m going to take my son and give it a try. Road&Reel = Inspiring
I got a steelhead back in the 2nd week of September drift fishing with Mike’s Salmon Eggs. The shrimp flavor ones. Here’s my setup. Mainlin is 30 lb hi vis braid, about 6’ 15 lb fluoro bumper, size 10 rolling swivel, piece of 1/4” hcl around 1/2” long, about 3’ 8 lb fluoro leader, #4 C14S Gamakatsu hook. I used a red float stop at the bottom of the egg to keep it from falling down to the hook. I also cut a toothpick the length of the egg and put it down the middle of the egg following the line. To help peg it. 2-3 fingers above the hook. You can use 8mm hard beads the same way. Works great in smaller rivers with lots of tail-outs.
That's exactly the way I fish the Kern river. A jar of Pautzkes, great balls of fire, single hook, 4 ft rod, 4 pound test, split shot I can slide up and down the line, depending on conditions and a pair of needle nose pliers. It all fits in your pockets. Sometimes the trout just suck the bait in, taste it and spit it out. Time it so you set the hook before you feel the bite, because you won't.
It's just North of Corral Creek by about a mile. There are several campgrounds in that area that you can check out because it really is a very relaxing place. Most places are first come first serve, so keep that in mind.
Native Kern Rainbows have a lot of spots on their back and few below their lateral line. They also have red/orange gill plates yellow/orange bellies and white tipped fins. Here's a video I made. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gxmZGMS-qq4.html
What a great video👍👍👍👍👍 I fly fish/ euro nymph all the time but I never hesitate to drift salmon eggs either like that. I love my spinning rods just as much as my fly rods. Definitely subscribing 👍👍
All it takes is a rooster tail.. also depending on what part of the river on if you get caught using bait you will lose your gear and be fined big time...
I used to fish Kern as a kid and we only caught mud suckers, I’m taking my kids in June and we love catching trout, any advice on where to find them on the Kern? We’re staying at Rivernook and we do not fly fish lol, thank you
In June, the water will be moving kind of fast so I would focus on some deeper pools or in the campgrounds where the water splits and slows down. Right there across from Rivernook is a good place and I really enjoy the Springhill campground areas. You may be able to get up to Peppermint Creek and they might stock that this year because there'll be plenty of water. They should be stocking through the 4th of July.
@@RoadandReel we had a good time! Caught some fish and released them. I’m only 3 hours away, so I’ll be back. Where on the river are you in this video?
@@kylepatrick5314 this is between Corral Creek and Springhill North. I'm glad you got to catch some fish. This is the perfect time of the year to beat the crowds and the heat. Up near Roads End is another great place to check out with a lot of nice runs to fish.
First time watching one of your videos… great video! Looking to hit up the kern this year. What type of hook and salmon egg (brand and color) do you use? What size weight as well? Thanks in advance. Tight lines.
Thanks! I use a size 10 baitholder hook, usually Eagle Claw brand. I use two 1/30oz split shots about 18 inches up with 4lb test. My favorite eggs are Pautzke Great Balls Of Fire Green Label, followed by the blue label or red. Good luck out there. Tight lines!
@@RMGPG mosquito hooks work, but you can't fit as many on there and they tend to come off in fast water. That being said, I've had great luck with them.
What size and type hook do you use ? I use circle hooks around the Vancouver area , lakes and rivers with single eggs, Also for Salmon and Steelhead just rubber eggs not real eggs in the currents,
I use a size 10 baitholder hook. I've used rubber eggs before, but sometimes I don't think they squish enough for the trout and it spooks the fish. I've used circle hooks with a single egg with a lot of success, but I like to have multiple eggs in the current in case one comes off.
Everyone that fished the Lower Kern..knows to get Pautskis salmon eggs,,green label…sometimes Red label towards the upper part..single hook, size 14-16..not more than 2 eggs…spit shot..guaranteed daily limits every day
I agree with the Pautzke's Green label, but I use a single size 10 bait holder hook fully loaded with 3-4 eggs and a split or two about 16-18" above the hook. I find the hook sets are a little better and the fish are larger, but I'm sure your way is just as good.
