There are proper ways to install an under the tank heater and were showing you and talking to you about the risks of using second hand heating pads . There's a lot of different opinions on where to place the thermostat sensor. Many say on inside tank. If animal moves sensor. Mat will continuously heat to max. (Trying to reach specified user temp) Can melt tub, or cause fire over time. Because the senor isn't over mat, or off to one side an readings are off. If you tape it down to inner tank. Tape messes with animals, especially when tape is old and peels up. So most say stick on top of heat pad, an then place on bottom of tub or tank, yes readings are off a bit, but you compensate the few degrees higher then what actual internal temp is . But the pad in turn can never overheat/burn your animal. So you would need a temp gun, or some other item to display internal temp for added safety and exact temp. I personally use 2, the temp gun an a external temp guage. But each person has there own way of doing things, none are 100% right, or wrong. But its good do know both sides, and choose the one way you like best to suit your animal and style.

Always put it inside the tank ontop of the mat then put a stone ontop of it. If you put the probe strate on the mat readings will be way too high amd the enclosure will be way too cool

Tldr: use a thermostat with your heat mat to prevent fires and crispy critters. He said to put the probe in the enclosure but personally I prefer the under the mat method. It won't do you any good if your enclosure is the perfect temp but the bloody mat overheats one day and burns down your house (or scalds your animal). Using a thermostat and placing the probe between the glass and the mat allows you more precise control over the mat's temp. If it gets too hot it shuts off and you can always use another in tank digital thermometer to help you adjust the thermostat for optimal (and safe) heating. I use this method because otherwise this sweet but dumb-dumb hamster I have wouldn't have any fur left from how often she burrows to be directly on top of that mat

Heat mats are not a good heat source, overhead heating is much better for them. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option during the day, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. They produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. Ceramic heat emitters are good for nighttime heat. All bulbs will require a lamp guard to prevent the snake from coming into direct contact with the bulb.

Not sure if this has been answered before but I’m planning to use tile for my substrate for my leopard gecko with a exo terra viv would I stick the heat mat under the tank or under the tiles and would having the mat under the tank give of enough heat with the tiles? Thanks love the channel

I'm not an expert but I can say that during these cold times I have to turn up my thermostat that controls the temp of my heat mats a bit, I usually keep them on the high 90s and the inside temp would be around 89 which is good for leapord geckos, but just last night I checked their warm hide with a heat gun and its was in the 70s which is too cold and i had to turn up the them to 100 to at least have it at 89 to 92, so I would believe from that experience that yes during winter you'll have to adjust the temp, I hope this answered your question and helped in some way✌🏻

Hello mate. I’m having really big problem with my enclosure the thermostat is set on 88 but sometimes it gets even hotter I use a gun to check it. Now its set on 80 but hitting 88 which I think it’s ok for Leo’s. I hope I’m making sense. If you could help us that would be gold. Cheers bud. Love your vids you have helped me so much

I have had a question no one will answer... When attaching a heat pad to a plastic enclosure; is there a possibility that toxic chemicals burn off the plastic, potentially harming the animal? I only ask because I myself have plastic enclosures.

That does happen if the enclosure is not deep cleaned. It's not the plastic giving of toxic gasses it's the deep down manufacturing oils that are left on the plastic that burn off. Also fake plastic/ silk plants close to heatbulbs can give off gasses that are toxic

@@NORTHERNEXOTICS why do I keep seeing people using the heat pad or mats two different ways. Some people stick them on the tub or people slide it under the tub? If you were to stick the mat to the tub and the heated surface pointing down to the surface you have you tub on....would that run the risk of burning your surface that your tub is on? Also how would you regulate air temperature with surface heating device?

I had a bad mishap the other day with my heat mat it set my tank on fire and burnt right though the bottom of my tank melted the carpet and chard my floor boards thankfully the wife was home to put the fire out and save my crested gecko's. ALL WAYS USE A STAT TO CONTROL THE MATS IT'S ALOT SAFER.

I guess it depends on where you're from in the US. Personally I've always known them as an undertank heater not a heat pad or heat mat. A heat pad is one of those thingies I put on a sore back not an enclosure and heat mat just brings to mind heated floors for me....
