Ne Obliviscaris - "Of Petrichor Weaves Black Noise" Vektor - "Recharging the Void" Opeth - "Dirge for November" My Dying Bride - The Cry of Mankind All four songs are ambitious metal executed flawlessly! For non-metal: Depeche Mode - Any track from the Violator album Amon Tobin - any track from Permutation
ALL DEAD ALL DEAD - AT LAST, THE VIDEO!. A bittersweet song written by Brain May when his dearly beloved childhood cat Pixie died. Take that with Brain May's vocals. It has a slight Paul McCartney/ Beatles vibe to it. PS: THE MILLIONAIRES WALTZ is also an early prog masterpiece.
You should listen to / watch a live performance of this English band called err (looks it up to get spelling) Marillion - Not sure how it’s pronounced? And their song called Neverland the singer does a awesome thing with his microphone I’m not sure if the studio version will have the same impact as you can’t see what he does with the microphone and I’ve not heard the studio version yet…but if you do a video of my new fave band I’ll sub you
That’s TOO HARD!😄 Possibly “INNUENDO”. (My PERSONAL FAVORITE is: “DON’T TRY SO HARD”… Freddie Mercury’s FAVORITE - songwriting-wise - was “SOMEBODY TO LOVE”)
9:58 The same word "here" changes it's meaning to "hear" when it repeats; "Come here" --- "I (hear) you". The thought put into this song is incredible. It is an absolute Masterpiece.
I wish people who automatically bypass Queen would take the time to listen and discover what great unique music they produced especially the first 6 albums before the radio friendly phase. Queen used every ingenious maneuver to create a one of a kind sound. Great reaction
The genius of production and creativity, Prophets Song is a masterpiece that goes largely unnoticed, glad you understand the detailed beauty of this song.
As much as I love Freddy I always felt Brian was often overlooked as an equal partner. The Prophet's Song and Bohemian Rhapsody were the prefect bookend to the second side of The Night at the Opera. They went together like Somebody to Love and Tie your Mother Down from A Day At The Races. Or We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions from News of the World. Or Bicycle Race and Fat Bottomed Girls from Jazz. Or even going back to the beginning and Keep Yourself Alive and Liar from the first Queen Album. Brian and Freddie's competition fed off each other. As song writers both were superb. Freddie was the better keyboardist and showman but Brian was the better guitarist, but both were great songwriters. Queen was a wonderful band PERIOD
Yes, unfortunately there are several songs on their albums that are overshadowed by the hits that they had. I think true Queen fans have heard and loved this song for years. One underrated song you might want to try is "It's Late" or "Dead on Time".
Yes and weirdly enough Queen had in the last few years up until the movie so many songs are a commercials that they must’ve been amazed that people were using her for that most of them or John Deacon you had “you’re my best friend and then Freddies don’t” stop me now to name a few
People, how? How the hell can you give it a 9/10 or 9.5/10? What kind of song deserves a 10/10? Do you know anything more brilliant, magical, sophisticated, complex, better sung or played than this unique, amazing, unbelievably genius masterpiece???
been a queen fan for as long as I can remember. I often ponder what the world would be like if The Prophet Song or The March of the Black Queen was their big hit instead of BohRhap. the guitar work and singing on this sing is truly wonderful. I like to think that this songs delay vocal solo is equal to Brians delay guitar solo on Brighton Rock.
I was 10 when A Night at the Opera came out. I was totally blown away and have been a Queen fan ever since. You are dead on in your analysis that The Prophets Song is a total and complete masterpiece.
Queen at their heaviest/proggiest (IMHO) - and I LOVE IT!! (although Stone Cold Crazy I'd consider their most 'metal/thrash') Course I knew Bohemian & You're My Best Friend, but when I bought A Night At The Opera and I heard this track - my mind was blown! Couldn't believe Queen could make something like this (but also hearing other tracks like '39, Sweet Lady, Seaside Rendezvous, realized that their sound versatility had no limits!) For the lyrics and composition - I don't know what fever dream Brian May had, but I'm sure glad he did! 10/10 no question!! Great reaction/review. Cheers.
The engineer who was recording this song with Queen has the highest of praises for it. He said he felt it was the best song he had ever been involved in and he goes on about it in a very technical manner. Brian brought the concept of cannon or bell effect into the studio and showed it to Freddie who loved it so much that he just took it and ran with it, it was risky and Freddie loved risky. I think for an untrained ear, Freddie may have taken it too far which may explain the lack of public support for this song. As for myself, I think it is a brilliant work of art and a window into the intricate manner in which Brian's brain works while he is composing a song. I think this song shows just how much Brian and Freddie challenged each other to continue to grow and produce better and better songs. It really does seem that Brian admired Freddie so much that he wanted to remain worthy of working with him and I believe Freddie kept challenging himself to produce music that proved him worthy of performing with Brian. The mutual admiration between the two was the engine that kept Queen fresh and ever expanding in their writings.
@@TheMusicKingdom Couldn't agree more with Sherry's comments. Freddie was the Virgoan perfectionist, but I believe that trait was shared by all members of Queen to the extent that they all became so prolific at writing and expressing their feelings in their music, that is also was the 'glue' that kept them together... thankfully... blessings.
No one today could possibly understand how hard it was to record this or many Queen songs on 24 track analog tape. No fancy computer pro tools, auto tune and thank God no pitch correction. The Cannon part was all Brian, it fascinated him and like many thing Queen songs. Can we do this, Why Not?
I completely agree and I enjoyed your review immensely. I am still amazed that this song never got the accolades that I thought that it should have. This whole album is amazing but The Prophet's Song it still my favorite.
omg i LOVE this video and your analysis!! ngl I'm kinda blown away. Full disclosure I'm a long time Queen fanatic, lol, so yeah I fully admit I'm biased.... and I just love your joy and appreciation of this magnificent song - not forgotten by me.... nor, I daresay by all of us who adored Queen from the beginning. Out of the box indeed ... fabulous plus poetry plus classical plus hard prog rock.... YES PLEASE!!! it's exactly what i adore about this band. When it drops into that gorgeous heavy guitar section right after Freddie's canon piece it grabs me in the gut every time... and I go from la la la-ing that beautiful harmony to head bangin' in the car turned up to 11. 🤣 mygod i just LOVE it. While I was happy for them that they got so big, and deservedly so, I was always bummed that what I considered their best music just got lost and never played again. To me, this will always be the real Queen. All the 80's pop hits don't do much for me, its the amazing creative artistry of the first few albums that still entrances me. To this day, 50 years later, I love that music as much as I did when I was 14 and first saw them. I miss them so much.
Queen throw everything at the wall in this track and all of it sticks. Above all that is mentioned, the thing that works for me is the use of the stereo image as another instrument.
What's completely bonkers about this song is during that middle section, just after Freddie's solo vocal harmony repeats, there's a 3 part harmony that also needs to harmonise with the 2 delayed repeats, totally insane!
I may get shot down in flames for saying this but this song is a slightly better song then Bohemian Rhapsody but i do understand why Bohemian Rhapsody was chosen for the single, when i first heard this song at the beginning i thought it was a Freddie song then the heavy guitar chords came in I knew it was Brian's. I'm more of a Brian fan then Freddie fan, don't get me wrong i love Freddie. A lot people when they find out Brian's contribution to the music industry are shocked about how much he has done not just with Queen and his solo stuff but also what he has contributed behind the sean's, and when you look into what he has done you will understand why he was knighted buy the king. P.s Brian is not a guitarist he is a singer-songwriter who plays guitar extremely well, the way he uses the guitar is like an extension of his voice and that is a great thing especially when you have a band member with the vocal chops of Freddie.
First time here... as a Queenie, couldn't pass this up! I do understand your thinking it was Freddie's masterpiece, especially after hearing Freddie's "Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke," but it is reminiscent of "'39" and "Who Wants to Live Forever" (and more), by Brian May. "The Prophet's Song" has long been a favorite and your scoring and using the word "artistic" several times were accurate. In my former midwife opinion, these lines: "Ah-ah, children of the land - Quicken to the new life, take my hand" are sublime. Quickening is the midwifery/obstetric word for when the baby begins movements that can be felt. Some cultures believe it is when the spirit enters the child. That these words are used really is a testament to their brilliance with vocabulary as well as with music. A great mini-docu of "Making of The Prophet's Song" is a nice delve into the small details, especially of the delays Freddie sang... which were taped live over the 2 delays. Wild! I was _so_ happy to hear you say you thought Freddie's voice came into its own in the 80s. I have said that for years and have gotten flack for it. Nice to have validation! Thanks for this Review!!
It was Freddie Mercury who understood Brian May's talent and potential, which is why he followed the band Smile before approaching Brian to join. Brian May and Roger Taylor are the real founders of (what became) Queen and Freddie's respect for bandmates Brian, Roger, and John was total. Freddie's awesome contribution to Queen was, in part, a determination not to let the band down! His apparent dominance in the writing of many of their early singles was just the best way to get the Albums launched! This is how to see the Freddie and Brian relationship.
Just discovering your channel - and as a super QUEEN fan (since this album came out) - I loved this review. It’s not a reaction because of your knowledge and attention to detail - just like QUEEN! ❤. I also love how you analyze the different elements - production, harmonies, vocals, creativity and artistry. Will be watching for more!
Part of the reason it likely sounds like a Freddie song is that Brian tended to sing his own songs, but this is one of the exceptions, and Freddie’s known for the big epics.
I must be honest; when I first watched a reaction of yours, I shrugged you off. It was Tool. I thought you were far off on your scores. I still do, but that’s okay. (Tool Army Forever). I have come to realize, after many viewings of other various songs of other various bands, I appreciate you much more. I appreciate your honesty, your loyalty (lol), and your perspective.
the entire album speaks for the courage of these 4 musicians. They were broke and didn't stick to conventions.Lazy on a sunday afternoon, 39, Seaside Rendezvous.. All songs no one expected from a group struggling to survive at the time. Normally one would "scatter" the songs a bit and distribute the potential No. 1 hits on later albums. But not this group, who see their thing through. It's a shame, such courage was found in the last quarter of the last century.
I bought this album when it came out, amazing.freddie also designed their logo.ive been a fan since 1st hearing them.ive had the fortune of seeing Queen live twice.truly an awesome experience.
Hello, new sub here, diggin you here in Detroit. I’ve been aQueen fan since ‘74, and i think this record is among the Top 5 all the me rock albums. And Prophets Song is my all time fave numero uno prog track, bar none! Here endeth the lesson!
Hey Frances... Thank you so much for such an exquisite reaction and analysis of such a long-forgotten masterpiece.. one of Sir Brian May's amazing compositions... also just watched your comparison of Freddie and MJ vocal video, quite well composed I must say, and yes, I agree, we all won on that one... so I just subbed! When I first heard Queen, I was working night shift at a printing company, and the press room had a wonderful stereo system installed, so when the pressmen went home for the day, the art dept would crank it up loud and rock out all night long... the local radio station played the album "A Night at the Opera" one night as their midnight madness show and that's when I fell in love with Queen and Freddie... The night the Jackson Five were performing on the Ed Sullivan Show, my whole family were in front of the TV watching (I was also baking cookies) and I remember making a comment that little boy singing would someday be a superstar... my first experience of Michael Jackson singing... such good times... thanks for the memories... One song I would love for you to analyze is Sir Brian May's "Dream of Thee" from the French movie FURIA soundtrack that he composed and performed in 1998... a hauntingly beautiful ballad about lost love during wartime... also, Freddie Mercury did a song for a Dave Clark musical called "TIME"... there are several versions of the song, but the performance where he sang solo is tremendously powerful... and both are quite unforgettable. Looking forward to more great analyses of popular and/or classical music... blessings.
The profit song was the first song I herd from the album that I could not stop listening to back in 1975 playing it on my dads car music system till the tape was warm out. it was like watching a movie with your ears. I totally agree with your comments it still like no other music I have ever heard in your life ❤
when i was 8 a friend gave me both ANATO and ADATR because he no longer had a vinyl player, this song used to scare the shit out of me, but is still loved to listen to it, lol
Great video, really enjoyed it, Freddie & the rest of Queen are like the modern day , Mozart, Beethoven & Struss on steroids, masterpieces left right & center, imagine what they would of thought about them if they were back in the days of Mozart & co, i think they would of been second fiddle to Queen. Great analysis & review to a great song, keep em coming from Queen...well done man 👍
I was age 10 or under when I would listen this album using my dads proper headphones with balance, bass and trebble in left and right ear. The sound of the vocal only section being phased from ear to ear was incredible! Such an amazing experience for a 10 year old to hear in what must have been the mid seventies. Another song that blew me away around the same time was Jdethro Trulls Locomotive Breath. I remember my dad would turn the volume down at the line "His mother and his best friend having fun". I must have been so young at the time he thought he had to protect my ears from the 'rude bits'. What he didn't realise was that I would never noticing the actual words but soaking up the music like a sponge and the lyrics went in and were incidentally memorized. Being so young I wasn't even aware of what "in bed and having fun" meant! 😂
Yay. From each album. (1 or 2 )My fairy king. March of the black Queen, Brighton Rock/tenement Funster , Prophets Song, Long Away/teo totriate, it’s late, more of that jazz, the whole flash album, save me, cool cat, it’s a hard life/machines, pain is so close to pleasure/princes of the universe, was it all worth it / breakthru, ride the wild wind, let me live
I think RU-vid knows what I’m listening to and gives me recommendations based on my music. All seriousness, great video! A Night At The Opera is my favorite album of all time!
Yessss I guessed it right. No rioting today 😎 I absolutely love this song. I'm surprised it isn't more well known, but maybe that's cause of the length and the acapella part.
It is poetry to music. True art. This video officially makes you guys music nerds. 🤣To me anyways. The way you feel about this song, is the way I feel about Rush's 2112. ♥🎼🎵🎶🎶
Hi there, and thank you for this amazing Review and analysis. So true that The Prophet's song gets such a high grade, it nears perfection. I did see in comments that the step from Queen to Nightwish, due to composing a near perfect song , is a little step !!! I wanted to add two bands / projects to that list, and hope you would listen to them both. They are Savatage and Ayreon. In today's music industry , there are so much things that sound alike, as if everything goes through the samen machine to spit out the same for the masses, but these two bands/ projects stick out without a doubt , above them all !!! Cheers and greets from the Netherlands, Chris.
I love this song, and I cant belive it so underated, it must bee the most underated Masterpiece ever. And who is best BoRhap or Prohpet song? 😮❤ this is fenomenal! And Freddie’s singing is outstanding……..wow 👑…….no, not laf at the mad man…….omg you forget Prince wow sit down and hear at his guitarplaying and his marvelous voice. Everybody forget Prince! My two music-genius is Freddie Mercury and Prince Rogers Nelson……..wow you come to bee blown away…..
Even though, in the early days, the person who had the first idea for a song got the credit! All of them often helped with most of the songs. That's why they later decided to just credit Queen, the whole band for each song on their last few albums. So Freddie could have had a massive input on this song.
My favourite Queen track .. I'll throw out Brighton Rock Stone Cold Crazy White Queen March of the Black Queen My Fairy King It's late Dead on Time.. for reaction Mmaaahhhh all of their tracks 😂
The "Prophet's Song" is one of my favorite tracks, it's epic, Hard Rock, slightly Progressive Rock, featuring the typical Sir May's delay... a masterpiece!!! 🤘🤘🤘🔝🔝🔝❤❤❤ Greetings from Italy!!! 🇮🇹😉
This is much better than other overated songs like Queen's own Bohemian Rhapsody and others like Stairway to Heaven (these two songs are always in the top 2 of best rock songs ever).
I think your right on the mark with this song, the only thing I disagree with is Freddie he should get a 10 out of 10 because nobody sounds or sings the style he had there may be people who copy him you know the saying often Imitated never duplicated look around you’ll see I’m right I’m a singer in a band that I’ve seen& heard a lot in my life but you can’t give him enough credit !!!!
Prophets Song, Bo Rap - this was not something they fell into. Queen II is the true masterpiece. The template. Do yourself a great favour if you haven't already. Best wishes.
@@TheMusicKingdom oh yes! soooo.... can we get your reaction & analysis of The Fairy Fellers Master Stroke? and White Queen, another piece of Brian May poetry....? 😁
I really like the song, but not really a fan of the a cappella section. I'll agree that it was very well done, but it was similar to what they did in Bohemian Rhapsody, but just seemed too repetitive to me in this case. I've been a fan of Queen since the early 80s, but sometimes they go off on a tangent which I don't care for. I also agree that heavier music is frequently better when they go outside the box. Rush is another good example of this.
