I made this video earlier this year about the pros and cons of living in Hua Hin. I have re-published it for those of you who may have missed it as it is as relevant today as it was then.

Good to see Hua Hin in the sunshine. The train to Surat Thani took me 7 and a half hours, what an amazing journey for someone used to UK railways. I fell in love with Hua Hin after a day or 2 and hopefully be back on that train there very soon. 🇹🇭🙏🏻

I recommend the Hua Hin Hospital - same doctors as Bangkok Hospital. I had a head MRI, neuro exam and MRI analysis, and various RX for $175 USD - all in less than 4 hours.

I have just come across your channel, and found this video on Hua Hin very interesting. I am planning a visit to Thailand shortly (having been many times before), with the intention of trying to find a suitable place to retire, and I think that Hua Hin should be on my shortlist. You have put a lot of effort into this video, which I appreciate, including very useful maps which are a real bonus when trying to orientate ourselves... so well done! One thing I noticed... at the beginning of the video you were pronouncing the town's name (correctly I think, as that's how locals pronounce it) like "hwaa hin", but then for the rest of the video you were pronouncing it as "hooa hin", which I think is how newcomers might pronounce it! Personally, I think I'll stick to the local pronunciation - it sounds more authentic anyway! Not a criticism, just an observation! 😊
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
Hi William. Sorry I have just seen your comment. Thanks for your input and comment. I am glad that you are enjoying my channel and that it is useful to you. Yes some people pronounce it hooa Hin and others wha him. If you look at my more recent videos I pronounce it wha hin. Hua Hin bis a great place to retire but you should check out other places as well while you are here if you have the time. Cheers Ged

Thanks mate. I have been fortunate with my health and I put that down to leaving Middlesbrough as soon as I could and moving to more tropical countries to live my life. Growing up in the UK with companies like ICI and British Steel releasing noxious gasses into the atmosphere that we had to breathe in on a daily basis and also the bitter winters and the inclement UK weather wasn't good for our health either. Sorry to hear about your failing health but as you say at least you have the NHS to help you whereas here in Thailand foreigners have to pay for everything and health insurance premiums for retirees are astronomical. Good luck and best wishes Cheers Ged

Delightful expose . Thank you for your great efforts to impart knowledge to the ignorant . ( That's me btw) I think the heat is a huge issue for those who are heat adverse. I find it gets into ones very bones! I would love to read your book. I've bought a one bedroom condo on beach at Cha Am. And agree with all your advice. I do think the visuals in the city centre of Hau Hin of elderly westerners on mopeds with teenage girlfriends a tad " surreal " but who is anyone to judge ? I think many "farangs" escape to the place from sad and sorry memories of their country of origin. And have found a happiness of sorts. And that's not a bad thing. Thanks for your exceptional efforts in sharing your experiences there. Invaluable. 👏 🙏🙏🙏🙏
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
Thanks Patrick. I agree that the heat can be an issue for some people who have lived in cold climates all of their lives and can be a shock to the system. I'm fine with it because I escaped England when I was 19 and I have always lived in hot countries since then. I did a video a little while back playing devils advocate about reasons that you should not retire here and the constant heat was one of them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Jw35DIm1TM.html Sounds like you have found a good life in Cha Am, it's a lovely area and a quieter option than Hua Hin. I agree about old farang taking up with girls young enough to be their granddaughters is not a good look and definitely not for me. Thanks once again for your input and comment it's much appreciated. Cheers Ged

We just came back from 3 weeks there, and we all fell in love with the place, it has such a nice feel about the town and the surrounding area. For us, as a couple with two young boys, Hua Hin seems perfect for bringing up the children and the weather isn't too shabby too! It's very central and has many good schools and shopping centres, nice beaches and is not as busy as other larger cities. Koh Samui is also well worth a look though island life does not suit everyone. If you have the time I would suggest that you spend some quality time in any places that your concidering relocating to, to make sure that it ticks most of the boxes for your needs. Hi Noel I can't attach a map to my reply as the system won't let me. Around the Soi 94 or Soi 88 areas are quite central and close to shopping centres and Hua Hin downtown. There are many places to rent in the middle of Hua Hin also if you prefer to be in the centre of town. You can catch a songthaew that runs from Khoa Takiab through to Hua Hin and beyond or there are plenty of motorbike taxis. You can also rent a motorbike by the day, week or month. What part in Hua Hin is a good place to settle?
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
Hi. That would depend on what you like to do with your time. If you love the city and nightlife then you would want to be close to town where the action is. In between Soi 88 and Soi 94 would be good. Or going a little north out of town around the Hua Hin night market. If you like a quiet beach lifestyle then Khao Takiab is great and is about 10 to 15 minutes drive to town. If you like the beach and the nightlife then there are many condos for rent along Hua Hin beach and the side streets though you will pay much more for those areas. I hope that this helps Cheers Ged

Bad points. Poor standards of driving obvious from the appalling road traffic accident stats. Pavements/sidewalks can be very uneven, often broken, with steep kerb/curb edges - dodgy at nighttime, & motorcycles use them for short cuts too. The biggest downside is not being able to speak Thai because tho not a problem for a passing tourists's needs, such lack of communication can be problematic leading to difficult misunderstandings in personal relationships !

Hotter weather, and right now the hottest I have seen in 6 years. Also the dirtiest air I've ever encountered. In Rayong area, I had a nice blue shirt on, went out to the car in a rain storm, and once in the car noticed all this pieces of stuff all over my shirt. The rain drops picked up the garbage in the air and dropped it on my shirt. Nasty. For over 3 years, I have not slept well in Bangkok. Nose congested every night. Finally found the right pills to help me breathe. Pollution in Bangkok can be very unhealthy. I finally bought 3 air cleaners. I keep windows closed all the time. I sleep like a baby now. Pills sitting in a drawer. Pollution was why I would wear mask on certain days, before covid. And as of today, May 1, 2023 mask are still mandatory on the BTS and MRT train systems in Bangkok. I'd say right now 80% of people still wearing mask. Also, something that really ticked me off, I was in Central World and Siam Paragon Malls the other day, and 4 people in a 6 hour window, were sneazing a lot or coughing a lot. None of those people were wearing a mask. And not one covered their mouth. Ignorance at its greatest. At this time covid is on the uptick with the many visitors from the North coming into the country. Although I don't think mask protect us that much, I will err on wearing them when I'm out and about. There's a new train station that has just opened to all points in Thailand at very cheap prices compared to most western countries. As for getting around Hua Hin. Most people who don't have their own transport use motorbike taxis, Tuk Tuks or Songthaews. A Songthaew is a sort of truck with seats in the back that you flag down and they run between Khao Takiab and the northern end of Hua Hin for a flat fare of 20 baht (US$ 0.55). You can rent a motorbike here for about 200 baht a day. If you decide to do that make sure that you have a motorbike driver's license as your travel insurance won't cover you if you have an accident when driving a motorbike on a car driving licence. I hope that this helps

Going to be a long time before I'll retire, but thinking about it now. Hua Hin is a mix of what I would want. I love Samui, but the costs are prohibitive, and I'm not interested in Pattaya or Phuket. One thing I don't do, is drive, so what kind of public transport options are there? I love walking, but when I'm older, mightn't be feasible, and the times I've been in Thailand, there have been a few folks trying to rip me off in taxis, so are there more more convenient and reliable transport options? Cheers in advance, and just subscribed too.
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
Hi George. I am the same for Pattaya and Phuket, I can take them or leave them. Plenty of public transport in Hua Hin, songthaews, samlors and Tuk-Tuks but no town bus service, there are cheap motorbike taxis and taxis as well. Songthaew (local pickup trucks) are especially convenient for going from Khao Takiab through Hua Hin and on to Cha-am. They operate like buses and follow the routes for a fixed price. There's a huge train station with regular trains to Bangkok and down as far as the Malaysian border. All in all its quite easy to get around. I hope that this helps Cheers Ged

Hi (14:43 26/02/23) …. When I was there about 40 years ago, the seafood was the highlight of the culinary scene. Is that still the case and is the seafood fresh from the local catch? Here in Phuket vloggers claim Rawai’s local seafood market is actually frozen fish packed in Bangkok and shipped to Phuket. I have yet to find a true local catch market or restaurant in Phuket but have only been here 6 months.

Hi Mark there's a seafood market where the boats come I at Khao Takiab, which is a ten minute drive south of Hua Hin that sells seafood from the overnights catch as that's where the fishing boats tie up. The night market in Hua Hin has fresh seafood on ice that they weigh and then cook to order for their customers . I don't know if its fresh from the local boats or if it comes from Bangkok but it certainly looks and tastes fresh. Cheers Ged

Many thanks, keep the informative videos coming please! Peter
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
Hi Peter. I did a video a little while ago about getting from Hua Hin to other areas of Thailand including Samui. Here's a link. The bus takes about 8 or 9 hours to Surat Thani and the ferry port of Donsak is quite a way out of town. If you're confident driving here the better way is to rent a car and drive the 7 to 8 hour drive to Donsak then take the ferry (about 90 minutes) the car costs 580 baht each way on Raja Ferries including the driver. That way you would have a vehicle to get you around the island as well during your stay. If you do that I suggest that you break your journey somewhere like Ban Krut or the beach areas of Chumphon to see a little bit more of Thailand. Another option would be to take the overnight sleeper train from Hua Hin to Surat Thani then rent a motorbike from Surat Thani to get you from the train station to the ferry and across to the island. You would then have the motorbike to get you around the island until you return to Surat Thani to take the train back. Motorbike rentals are around 200 baht a day. I hope that this helps Cheers Ged ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZX-SOdwarYs.html

Yes I know I have been told many times but there was not a lot I could do about that once I published it without redoing the whole video again which is time consuming and expensive when you don't make one penny from RU-vid.. But as always in life I tried to learn from my mistakes. Take a look at some of the 200 + videos that I have made since then you might find something that interests you Cheers Ged

Ged. Thanks for another great video. We’re over in the next couple of weeks and have booked a mini vacation to Chiang Mai, flying air Asia from HH airport (about £45 return, when we booked) I haven’t checked any other destinations but just to make you aware.

Hi mate. It's the pool at the Hua Hin Terminal Hotel on Soi 88. It's featured in many of my videos as I lived there for over a year. It's the best value hotel in Hua Hin Cheers Ged
@nickelroof6727

Ah, thank you. I am actually currently in Hua Hin and did view the Terminal (@Soi88) two months' ago. Though, I didn't recognise the pool. They offered me a room for 6200 baht excl bills. There wasn't a microwave in room, which was also very small, so decided against. I found a place between Makro and Hua Hin hospital with large pool on the other side of the rail line: 5000 baht excluding bills. I consider it better value even if a little farther out of town. Thank you for all your info and your prompt reply.@@thailandmyland...retiringd2351

Hi Nick. I see many bicycle riders around Hua Hin. And some hotels offer free bicycles to guests staying in their hotels. However Thailand's roads are known for being unsafe and the lack of road rules so if you choose to do so exercise caution... because driving here is not for the faint hearted Have a great Christmas Cheers Ged

Hi and thank you for the video. There were problems with your audio while you were on the lookout location. I could hear you but only on one side of my headphone set. Otherwise not a problem. Additionally thank you for your report. Your town has a bit too slow a pace for me but it looks kind of clean and that’s good. Bangkok and Pattaya are obviously very lively but a bit too dirty and smelly due to overcrowding and too much traffic exhaust. Thanks for your effort anyway.

Hi. Is it ok to visit in the rainy season?
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
Hi Jay. That would depend on the ferocity of the wet season and the area of Thailand that you were planning on visiting. Hua Hin doesn't usually have a big wet season as such places as Samui and Phuket. It also depends on how you like to spend your time on vacation. If you like to lay on the beach all day then coming during the wet season would not be advisable. Cheers Ged

You can't buy house king owns the land
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
Hi Scott. If you heard what I said when I first started talking about renting or buying a home in Hu Hin, I said if you look back at my other videos about buying or renting in Thailand they explain more about the process. But roughly here are the rules. Thai people can own land so the king doesn't own it. My girlfriend owns a house and land in Chainat in her own name as do her sisters and brothers. A farang can own a condo if 51% of the block of condos is owned by Thais. You can buy a house and land if you start a limited company and the land goes into the company's name. You can lease the land for 30 years in your name from the Thai owner of the land with the option of another 30 years and put a house on it. If you have a Thai wife or girlfriend you can buy the house and land in her name or buy land in her name and build a house on it. I hope that this helps Cheers Ged

Hi Ged . I have seen a few other blogs regarding heavy atm charges for cash withdrawals in Thailand , is this the case and which are the best banks to use there .. .. .. i bank with HSBC in UK
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351
@thailandmyland...retiringd2351 2 года назад
Hi. Yes ATM fees are horrendous. When I need money from Australia...let's say that I want to bring 5000Au dollars to my Thailand bank account. I put 5000 in my Au credit card leave it a couple of days then go to my bank here and withdraw 5000Au dollars into my account in Thailand. The fees are minimal, 100 BAHT from my Thailand account and no fees from my credit card because my card is In credit by more than 5000Au dollars. Obviously you would need to check with your own credit card provider to see if they have any fees I hope that this helps Cheers Ged
