F*k what other's think.... I totally agree... Considering the high costs to rent, much less trying to buy a place.... But I DO feel you on the 'dating' thing... But if I get the courage to even think of that... Hotel for 'the 'strange...' Hygiene wise... Luckily, my job supplies shower facilities. The 'potty' thing is an issue I have... I can pee anywhere... it's the pooping thing I have a problem with. Address wise, I've personal options that is no problem...
I loved living on my sailboat. Much easier than living in a car. I bought it sunk for $2000. I fixed it up and had it for 10 years lived on it go 5 years. I basically saved enough money to pay my house off at 35y/o.
I live in Northern California lots of affordable slips in the Delta(Sacramento river). Back then 1991-2001I paid 300/month. I don't know how much a slip is now. They will always tell you that there are no live aboard slips available. But I found once they get to know you they look the other way. I imagine SanDiego is expensive. But if you are serious I would look for a sailboat Ideally at least 30' long already in a slip. There are boats that are comfortable under 30' like the Flicka but headroom will be tight.😊
Wow that’s not bad at all compared to regular rent rates. Is it illegal to live on your boat or do you have to get specific slips where you are able to live in your boat and do they limit how many there are of those? Very cool you go to repair and fix up the boat to live in. I’m sure you learned a lot
@@MarmaladeOutdoors in the Delta and everywhere else there are specific slips that are live aboard. But there are so many little privately owned marinas up here that will let you do it. You first earn there trust by only staying on the boat at most 3 days in a row. 3 days is the universal maximum. Then you get to know everyone and ask if you could stay longer. Live aboard slips usually much more expensive than weekender slips. I just found a mom and pop marina that worked with me. It's a wonderful lifestyle. If you pick a quality boat and your good with your hands. You could add a South American Caribbean cruise to your adventures. There are many quality old boats available for cheap. Also many women don't find it a negative if you live on a boat. I have found women much more judgmental than men when it comes to alternative lifestyles. San Diego,LA and San Francisco areas are always the most expensive you need to look for small less popular areas. Living on a mooring is tough that said you could buy a boat that has a mooring and skip the wait! The boat with a mooring will be more expensive.
Hi there, I'm grateful for your channel. I myself want to be out there once my lease is up in April 2024. I often wonder myself as well if anyone would ever want to be in my life with this type of lifestyle. Keep smiling, though, it'll happen for you.
I have the exact same car as yours, just paid if off! I’m tired of spending 2300 for rent for a studio and my lease is up in august, I think I will try this car living! Please keep making videos, they will help me out a lot!
I really like your videos and your attitude. You give off a very mellow vibe. I started watching your videos when you hiked The Long Trail in Vermont. My goal for this summer beside hiking in Vermont is to complete the AT in my home state of Connecticut and part of Massachusetts.
Hey great hearing from you. You should totally do those sections of the AT, I only the know the Vermont portion but super pretty demanding section for sure. Thanks for the kind words
I have been researching into this. The issue is that I am still working and my company frowns severely on vehicle living. I do enjoy knowing people love the life though. There is quite a bit to learn.
I related hard to the beginning of this video. I'm 29 right now and have a six figure project management job but I'm not sure if i'm actually happy being stressed and having little freedom with my time. I live in a very nice town in a small apartment but i'm starting to like the idea of minimizing my expenses in exchange for a more free and intentional life. I literally just also bought a 2023 Bronco Sport and i'm excited I found someone on youtube who is able to actually live in it and make it work! I'm subscribing immediately.
😊I'm so happy I found your channel! This info you're sharing is so helpful and inspiring. I've been following several vanlifers etc for about a year and the past days binge watching. Ahem, a lady can tinkle in a jar too😂. 😊
Hey Lyn nice hearing from you and welcome aboard. I’m a backpacker and I know women can there even when in tents but I know it’s just not as easy… thanks for following along. Have some more car living videos planned soon so stick around. Cheers
@@MarmaladeOutdoors I followed you on IG too yesterday and can see your wonderful backpacking trips. Looks wonderful and a challenge I look forward to more of your videos😉
Hey thanks Lyn, yeah not sure if you’ve heard of it but I’m hopefully going to finish the Pacific Crest Trail this summer that’s 2,653 miles. I got hurt after only 902 miles in 2019 or I would of done the whole thing. Been going back each year since trying to finish it. Thank you for following along
I just bought a Bronco Sport, so naturally, your channel showed on my feed for the first time ever. For once, I'm glad social media spies on me. Lol. Finding the content very relatable, nice work, subscribing.
Hey Stan yeah that is really strange isn’t it… they say their not spying on us but every time I go on Amazon or shop online those items always pop up on the added on my Facebook view…
I actually found your channel by accident. What type of injure did you have and what caused it on your trail hike? Too bad they don't make acar like years ago. Big engine compartment, trunk and interior space. Easy to work on without all the electronics to go wrong. Scary for sure having a vehicle just stop dead in traffic. Thank you for the info and video. Blessings to you.
Hey Vail thanks for stopping by, don’t forget to subscribe if you haven’t already. So how I got injured was pretty scary, walking on the trail on a very narrow, muddy overgrown trail on the edge of a cliff in the northern cascades of Washington. As I was walking the trail literally evaporated and avalanches under my right foot which had all my weight on it. As the trail gave way and I flew off of it, I was stepping on my left ankle and it bent at an impossible ankle and I heard a big cracking sound. At that moment the ankle was the least of my worries. As I went over with my body weight, pack weight and momentum, I grabbed every plant on the way over and a very small bush somehow saved my life. I couldn’t believe it so I crawled up to the trail to then realize my ankle was swelling fast and in incredible horrible pain. As I found out later it was badly broken but in place. I was in the deep wilderness so proceeded to hike (really I limped) 80 miles over the next four days to get out of the wilderness to civilization.. I eventually went to the doctors and got e rays to confirm it was badly broken. The Amon t of pain I endured on that 80 miles is indescribable. If it was my wrist I would of kept going but it was too painful so I stopped. That’s the store
@@MarmaladeOutdoors Thank you for the answer to how your injure occurred and why. Many people have purchased a life saving emergency satellite device for such situations. A person wouldn't need to be 80 miles from help for it to be necessary to be used. Especially since you are by yourself. You are very Blessed to have been able to hike out on your injured ankle. Even though very painful as it was. It could of been a different ending.
How does the cost of meals come out for you compared to what it would be if you had an apartment and could cook more? I am guessing that you end up buying a lot of ready to eat stuff which tends to be more expensive. And besides the economic aspects, it seems like it’s probably more challenging to eat healthy foods when living in a car.
Yes you are correct on both. I basically have to buy my dinner every evening since it’s difficult to cook when I’m in a city where I park and he’s it’s very hard to eat very well or clean. When I am buying dinner at the grocery store and work the next day, I pick up something for my snacks and lunch for that day at work as well. I do try and eat a salad most nights if possible.
Thanks for all your realistic informational videos! As an only child of a single parent, I relate to a lot of what you've said. Sorry about the dating situation, but I can relate there also. I just figure the right people will gravitate towards each other eventually, so hold fast!
Awesome! Hiking Havasupai falls this weekend and will sleep in my truck the night before the hike per the hotels want $200 for a room in a fleabag hotel in the middle of nowhere! Lol. Love your channel. Keep kicking ass in life. Timmy C Arizona
Timmy great to hear from you and man you got the golden ticket getting a permit for Havasupai! So jealous… someday I will… for now just trying to complete the PCT. Yeah honestly I do that a lot too, drive to a trailhead, crash in my car for night, as you said it’s free, and if you dial it in we’ll enough it’s honestly pretty comfortable. Have a great time Timmy. Let Me know how it went after. Cheers
One year out from living this lifestyle. Stumbled on your channel today - via instagram - and so glad I did! Such great info and some beautiful hikes. Keep living the life 😀
@@MarmaladeOutdoors I am sure it will take some time to adjust to this new way of living, however, am excited for the (literal) journey it will be. Driving my home to the office is going to be interesting :-) and I also live in Queensland, Australia. Our laws are stricter than the other states when it comes to living in a car or van. Until I transition fully to remote work, it will be a juggle with living around my job location for a while.
Pro #3 is absolutely true “Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”” Luke 12:15 I think it’s safe to say there’s a difference between happiness and joy. I’m glad I’m not the only one who agrees!
Thank you so much for share it with us. Is your vehicle considered a car or a SUV? because the description of your video said living in a car, but I see it is an SUV. Please clarify for me that.
I’m starting this the first week of May. But I’m doing it out of a Tacoma with the bed being converted to a camper set up with a camper shell. I’m looking forward to it!
@@MarmaladeOutdoors Yep everything is good to go. I think this is my 3rd time doing it now. I do it every few years. i’m also a big minimalist so doing this it’s always really easy.
@@ProsperInHealth Normally yes you would use those on a vehicle if you had to leave the windows cracked but with a truck camper shell you have sliding windows that come on those things so I have screens on it like you would a house window.
I’m a new subscriber and I’ve enjoyed the first couple of videos. This was excellent advice. I admire people who are living in their cars for whatever reason. I am going into my 4th year of living in a class B van. First two years I was working remotely for my company. For the last almost 2 years I have been retired, but occasionally work projects for my former company. Here’s a couple tips. I have a UPS store box and it’s around $125 a year. No issues with the address for anything. Escapees RV club and America’s mailbox are good from what I have been told by full time Rv friends. If you want to hangout with like minded people from time to time while traveling, there is plenty. I have more good friends now than when I lived in a sticks and bricks. Escapees is my favorite resource. Not expensive. Also if you are solo, they have a very active solos sub group and they are a fine, helpful group of people. I don’t have any personal experience, but I have heard the WINs (Wandering Individuals Network) are very active too. Both groups hold camp outs and rallies. Safe travels and perhaps see you down the road.
Thanks so much great information. So with the ups store box you just use the box # as an apt ? Some say if you use your address like that and let’s say you try and renew your drivers license with the dmv it flags them that’s it’s not a real address. Is that true have you had that issue at all?
@@MarmaladeOutdoors I haven’t had any issues. I don’t even list it as an apartment. I just put #123 after the address. Banking, insurance, DL, voting etc. no issues.
Added. I was not able to get a real ID CA drivers license. I didn’t even try. I tried to get one for my rural sticks and bricks and even with my property tax paperwork and my utility bills, because I used a PO Box (at the time) neither had my city on the bills, only my street address. That wasn’t good enough. I’ve since moved out of state and my new state was no problem. 😁
Hey welcome Rose I appreciate that. I live in southern Californian so we have pretty good weather but or can get pretty cold around freezing during the winter. Thanks for subscribing I really appreciate it!!!
Great reality check! Definitely not for everyone, but certainly for special people. 😂 Marmalade, I hiked Mastodon Peak yesterday. Fabulous little hike, with the nature trail. Thanks for that video as well.
Hey Vera that’s great! Isn’t beautiful out there? Did you go to the peak? Great views from up there. Had you watched my hike of it with the hiking rev before you did it or did you already know about it?
I only knew about it because of your video. Had a bit of trouble finding the trail all the way up the last part. Ended up somewhere on the side of the mountain. That was good enough for me before my fear of heights really kicked in.
Ha! I hiked up Mastodon Peak today (Tuesday). I reached the top--and found a Search and Rescue guy there. He wasn't searching or rescuing: just out for a stroll, perhaps, but he was in uniform and carried his rescue pack. I too was prompted by Mike & Mike's (Lawrence & Callaghan's) recent hike there. P.S. At the peak I met a fellow from Maine, and we returned to the trailhead together. He was on a two-month solo cross-country trip, going to wherever his fancy led him. He showed me his Sprinter van. He had fitted it out as a camper and had constructed everything himself. Of course, it had a lot more room than Mike's Bronco, and the space was enough to alleviate, even if not eliminate, at least a few of the negative points Mike raised.
QUESTION: In hindsight, would you've gotten a Class B or built out a Dodge Ram Promaster? As I remember, Bronco's were not cheap, and a used RV may not be conducive to DoorDash, but is more room.
Women’s sex drive gets shot after 40 for many women…Dating apps are a nightmare for most guys of all ages these days. Dating and Romance is all very Hollywood and most peoples realities are not about their sex life after 40. Not saying great fun doesn’t happen occasionally but many guys are tired of the BS and don’t want to chase women anymore…Juice ain’t worth the squeeze. Most women aren’t givers and are self absorbed individuals. Some women are amazing humans but they probably shouldn’t be dated either!
Hey Lori, that is true so that should be a plus right? Haha yes I think everyone should have a healthy mix of both. Too much of either one is not good for one’s soul
