Just to throw it out there, the hate crime did seem random... because that's exactly how it was back then. You'd be out doing your own thing then randomly have graffiti all over your garage. It's to show exactly how normal and every day their lives were and how no one suspects they'll be a victim of a hate crime.

A few years back, I was leaving my class at my university when I cut through the student center. There were a group of girls in there, all of them in hijabs, and they were with the Muslim Student Association (MSA). They had a sign that said, “Meet a Muslim!” I was curious and walked over. Mind you, my knowledge on Muslims and Islam is minimal at best, so I was genuinely curious. I start talking to the girls, asking them questions, and then another girl walks up. She introduces herself as a leader of the campus’ Christian Student Fellowship (CSF). She starts talking too, and she was actually really polite. She was asking more theological questions and asking the different between Christianity and Islam when it comes to certain things. Everything seemed fine until this guy comes out of nowhere and starts shouting that the MSA girls were “serving the false god”. I thought it was scripted bc I didn’t think people actually did crap like this. He starts saying stuff and the girls are like, “Well where did you read that.” He replies that he read it in the Quran. The girls ask him where exactly he read it in the Quran, but he wouldn’t say. Then he just goes “Well, you’re gonna burn anyway, so it doesn’t really matter!” I’m just standing there and looking around as people and staff walk by. No one was saying anything. So I tap him on the shoulder and go, “Hey, these girls weren’t bothering anybody, so could you just leave?” He starts yelling at me and saying I’ll burn, and the CSF girl starts yelling at him to leave everyone alone. You wanna know what made him leave? The LGBTQ+ center had a booth right next to the MSA girls and the two people at the booth got up and told the guy to leave before they called security. The guy storms off and is all mumbling profanities under his breath. Two minutes later, campus security comes by asking if we were okay 😑 TL:DR; Don’t be like that guy. If you don’t agree with someone on things like religion, oh well. Don’t be an 🫏 -hole like he was.

i appreciate the writers creating an episode about Islam and our customs by having the cultural exchange as well as showing how theres no reason to judge or be fearful of people who are different but I really hated how they still incorporated stereotypes such as the father being this cold and stern scary-looking guy in Penny’s eyes, the constantly happy mother who just cooks and sews all day, and having Radika be expected to cook and clean because she’s a female. This also extends to the Chang Triplets which even their portrayal rubbed me the wrong way when i was a kid watching the show :/

Yes making a child fast would never happen, making a child fast to the point where they pass out is against everything about Islamic fasting and lastly making a someone else fast is a crazy thing to portray. In a time where my people were being seen as erratic and pushing their "dangerous" beliefs on others having Penny portray unhealthy fasting and label it as islamic is so disappointing. I come from a very religious home and consider myself pretty religious as well but if my mom found out that another family was forcing me to fast and attend school as a kid she'd def whoop their ass lmao

I don’t understand people who harass women for wearing/not wearing hijab. it’s literally up to her?? there’s cultural differences everywhere and if you’re confused, the best thing to do is just ask. chances are the people you ask won’t care or they might even be happy to share Edit: also, as a New Yorker, it is wild to me when fellow ny-ers have the „go back where you came from“ mindset. Like, this city was founded and built directly by immigrants, many of who were and still are discriminated against.

I was 8 when 9/11 happened and luckily, I had parents and teachers quickly explain that I shouldn't be afraid of someone just because they're middle eastern because doing that would be just like someone being afraid of me just because I'm black. They also explained the difference between regular worshipers and extremists. This episode really drove those lessons home for me. It was my introduction to Ramadan and the reason why girls wear the hijab. I loved the dinner and dance party because it reminded me of the cookouts and weddings I had been to in Gary and later Detroit. The ending made me cry and made me promise to myself not to let that sort of behavior slide. I carried that promise into adulthood and I'm glad for it. The way that The Proud Family focuses on certain iasues can be hit or miss but this episode knocked it out of the park.

I think part of why they didn't show anyone having issues with them is so you can't assume they did it and so it's harder to tie any one specific person or group of people to it. I honestly think they made the right call by not showing anyone that had a particular hatred towards them so that there's no boogieman that they can push it on to and just say "Oh, it was that person/group. That person/group is bad" which I think would have missed the main message they were trying to tell to begin with.

I am not Islamic or anything of that nature (I don’t want to use a blanket term because I don’t know the correct term) but I was friends with someone who was in my freshman year of high school. Her name was Ishma and she was the first person of that culture I had ever met. She was a very sweet girl, she didn’t wear a hijab but her mother and older sisters did. She would always tell me little things about her culture and I just love how many different cultures their are. I remember being in the cafeteria with her, asking her why she didn’t get the mc rib knock off the school had for lunch that day. And her explaining to me that she couldn’t eat pork, I was an ignorant kid and remember asking her why and asking a bunch of questions. And despite me being ignorant and probably annoying she was very sweet when explaining it to me. I hope she’s doing well ❤

We never had a culture swap day at school, but we did have a culture class where a Native American teacher would come in and teach us about Native American history and culture, we also did a lot of crafts in that class. Our town was mainly white people so I feel like it was really nessesary for us to be introduced to different kinds of people and cultures like that, unfortunetly they don’t have that class anymore because that teacher retired and the school decided to just get rid of the class instead of getting a new teacher 😔

Had the show stayed on air for another season or two I really wish these types of episodes were made; I think it was such a great way to open up conversations and give credit to those small details (Oscar using turkey instead of beef) that shows it's really not hard at all to be inclusive to different people. A little goes a long way, and that's what amazed me. This one, Michael's episode where he was called a sissy, Sticky's life changing due to his parents getting divorced, all great episodes with topics What I didn't like about this episode is that it just ended like that. A hate crime happened, but then it just cuts to Penny giving a 30-second speech about the family swap?? Maybe it was meant to be a 2-part episode, but either way it felt like the writers didn't know how to end the episode.

Keep up the great work! I love how you explained different types of phobias. Oh, I was 4 years old when 9/11 happened, and I still live here in NYC. I remember a few days back on the news about a girl who wore a hijab, and the people taking her pictures told her to take it off. She didn't want to because it's a part of her culture. Then, they asked if she supported Hamas, and I was upset because certain people don't have respect for others' culture. This one person said she should've taken it off because it's "American policy." I was angry and taken aback by what this person said. About confusing cultures, they do this with Latin countries and South Asian countries like India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh as well.

me and my friend are both hijabi girls and one night a couple weeks ago we went to watch a movie. Usually after we watch movies i sit in a shopping trolley and she pushes me around, we've done this many times, even next to police officers and they never had a problem with it. but this once instance im in the shopping cart and a security guard storms to us and yells at me to get out the shopping cart because i was not a kid (i literally am a young teen but ok) and i apologised and got out, while we were putting the shopping cart away, we realised the security guard was following us, we thought nothing of it because maybe he thought i would get in the shopping cart away, but even after we put the shopping cart away, he kept following us, at this point we were getting really uncomfortable so we went into a store and he just starred at us from outside of the store and left after a bit, this was also coincidentally at the start of the palestine and isreal war, so maybe that had to do with something, because he didn't have a problem with our non hijabi friends

The part where they all randomly saw their house get vandalized was pretty random, but at the same time I think it does fit. The entire episode showed how all of the characters viewed this family because of their culture and beliefs. That vandalism part was the hardest punch at the end. Also for something like that to happen to them after they were having a good time going out celebrating, that's real life. People go out, mind their business, running errands, working or having fun and then they are attacked, insulted, their belongings/property gets vandalized. It happens at unexpected times.

I don’t exactly remember what happened in my life the day of 9/11 I just remember it feeling… off. Like the teachers were trying TOO hard to pretend everything was ok. My mom said she got me on the school van and went back inside in time to see the second plane hit. My aunts worked at the animals shelter and they said someone came running inside, yelling to turn on the news because a plane hit one of the towers and like my mom, the turned it on in time to see the second plane. I lived in a small, north eastern Pennsylvania town that’s like 2 or 3 hours from NYC, so people had family that lived or worked there and they were frantically trying to find where they were. Mom worked at a bar and one of her regulars lost his wife in the towers. We went to the memorial museum and there’s a section of old phones. If you picked them up and pressed a button, you could hear the last phone call of one of the victims. One of the people I was with saw a woman crying while listening to a recording and she said “I’m sorry, it’s just that this is my son’s recording and it’s the only way I can hear his voice anymore.” And then there are people like my grandma who thought 9/11 gave them the right to harass people they thought were Muslim or Islamic. Grandma saw someone who was a firefighter and saw his truck had “Muslim symbols” on it. She she followed him to a bank. Cornered his truck with her car in the partaking lot, ripped open his door, and went off on him and his wife for “siding with the enemy.” All over decals that she THOUGHT were Islamic/Muslim symbols. She even called a friend who was a higher up in the firefighter company that the man had a decal of on his car and b!tch to him until he said he would “take care of it.” So she likely got a man fired from his work because… she was upset he had decals on his car that had nothing to do with the people who caused 9/11 but MIGHT have had something to do with their faith? And she thinks it’s something to be extremely proud of! She harassed a man for something she didn’t understand and possibly ruined his livelihood, and she PROUD of it.

My first experience with Islamophobia came after 9/11. A month later, I was taking a plane from OR to MO to the Whiteman Airforce Base to live wth my aunt. I nearly missed my flight and connections because I was "randomly" selected for additional security screening. The others in line looked like me with maybe one white guy thrown in. I was made to go into a room to undress down to my underwear and be patted by female tsa. I was 12 and now know it was illegal. I was 5ft 7 and 145lbs but still a minor. I was asked my nationality and other questions and had my shoes and all my luggage dug through. At my new school (mid west, military town) I was called racist names and realized quickly the kids and teachers didnt know the difference between being Muslim and Jewish (i am a Jew). I was abused at home so i never questioned the treatment but as an adult it blows my mind. Im not even Muslim...or middle eastern I'm half mexican. But because of my name, dress and looks, people assume and make judgements. Its not so bad anymore...but as a 12 year old during the 9/11 fallout, it was crazy.

Watching the episode now, it seems weird and out of place that there was no build up to their house being vandalized. But back when this came out it was sort of expected because how common that was. I didn't live in New York, but in an extremely predominantly white state, where you would hear news stories a few times a year of "the only Muslim family in the neighborhood was targeted for hate, who would do such a thing?" I remember people (some family included at the time) saying they should get rid of the only mosque in our city because it was housing terrorists. It was cartoonishly bad back then, so having it be so cartionishly out of nowhere in this episode really wasn't all that unrealistic from a kids point of view...

I was 11 when 9/11 happened. Even though they portrayed the Zamine family as a stereotype the ending was wholesome because Penny explained how they are just a family and highlighted the similarities. They tackled the hate crime head on and Penny even called it out. Still there are people who are offended by this episode because of the Muslim stereotype.

Great video bro! I have definitely witnessed Islamophobia! I remember when I was in college and we had a trip to New Orleans so we had to catch a plane out there and in my class I had a classmate who was from Islam you should have heard the jokes that kids was making "oh don't let her on the plane because she might have it blown up" and the amount of anger that I had towards hearing that I blessed them fools out and made them apologize because who even says something like that. In terms of culture day we didn't switch clothes, but they used to celebrate it by them cooking foods that belonged to other cultures and I used to be so annoyed because instead of them bringing cooks in from that particular culture to make the food they would cook it and every single time they messed that food up.

As a whole the culture is diverse. Muslims are from different backgrounds period!!! The 9/11 terrorist attacks will always be a tragic event in history. I remember I was in fourth grade. The announcement was publicly made at school. I was scared.......and then it still haunts to this day. The episode highlighted many viewpoints. Keep up the amazing work!!!

Pakistani American here, and I don't remember this episode, but I loved and enjoyed your analysis of the episode! And the stories I could tell from being called Indian/hindu, to the infamous "Go back to where you came from." I grew up when 9/11 happened, and although I don't remember the event, I've had classmates blame me for it. I find myself educating others about my culture like Ramadan and Eid, I love it but it gets exhausting. Especially if you're apart of another minority group as well (ex. LGBTQ+ Muslim). Personally I still at 27 get anxiety with the mentioning of the 9:11 attscks as much as I was 5 at the time and was 550 KM from NYC. 530 KM from you man. We were so young at the time of attscks and so misonfoemed at the time by fear mongering that I rewatched as an adult(for historically reference because our early childhood memories are weak or vague at under 10). Plus The Niagara-Niagara border was closed that day and when COVID happened.

About the cultural differences thing and not being able to tell them apart, I can understand not knowing the difference between different cultures, especially if you're not particularly interested in learning about different cultures. The thing that's the problem, is immediately assuming it's one culture, instead of politely asking before assuming. Also, if you think you're sure, but the person from that culture corrects you, don't say "oh" or something like that, say something like, "I'm sorry, I didn't know". Show them that you still care about them even though they're different from you and that you're willing to correct yourself to respect others.

I have Muslim family members, and I took it upon myself to do more research about hijabs, niqabs (what I saw most family wearing), etc over the years, because at first, when I was very little I didn't have a full understanding. And I still don't know why Mrs. Zamin pronounced hijab like "hoojab", I couldn't find anything about that being another name or pronunciation for the term. And it's crazy with Oscar mispronouncing Radhika's name as "ra-DEE-ka" instead of "ra-dih-KAH", if I'm typing the emphasis properly...that's just like with myself, because my name is Domian. pronounced dah-MEE-ahn. My mom got it from a boy she met that was Greek, that's another story. But the fact that Radhika didn't correct Oscar is almost like she's used to people saying her name wrong, which is kind of relatable, because it's tiring having to correct people all the time...at least that's how I kind of "read" that part.

Born in 2002 and grew up in Ohio. Definitely experienced a lot of islamophobia in the form of bullying in school. Honestly it wasn't the bullying that got me it was lack of teacher intervention and basic education. When kids would follow me around yelling allahu akbar it was teachers and other students not saying anything that got me. Bc i understood the people bullying me were doing it because they were extremely insecure and saw my religion as an easy target. There was also the ignorance. I remember being told as a 7 year old that I didnt believe in God because I am muslim. and being upset because I didnt understand why someone could be taught something wrong and churn it out onto me. Then of course there are the stories of graffiti, stolen and destroyed property, physical attacks and verbal threats that happened to people in my family. But we also have a lot of funny stories of life in america and interactions with people that I focus on. The world is changing so much and even though we are regressing in so many areas (the gen0cide in palestine) were growing in a lot of other areas. I get told "I like your hijab" more often than "why do you wear that thing" and I can say "I'm fasting" and get a "oh okay then" instead of feeling the need to lie. tldr: likfe back then was very very very shitting and even though life does suck still the improvement is massive (also free palestine)

Wow, my only memory encountering a Muslim and having a religious discussion happened on the city bus. He was trying to convince me how the Virgin birth could not have happened. I tried to tell him in the nicest way I could that it didn't matter, and if God were unhappy with what I believed, He would have to change my mind. That was probably the first time I was a little bothered by discussing someone's religion with them. The other times I've encountered Muslims, they were pretty chill; we didn't get along great, though. I even had Muslim roommates in college, international students, and they mostly kept to themselves. I hate that we didn't become friends, and I was a little cautious around them, but that was mostly because I felt like I was going to make a horrible impression. To me, they are like the penultimate religious people and utterly put most Protestant Christians to shame. Something about me, though, is I kind of suffer from religious trauma, so religious discussions aren't always good for my mental health. I'm comfortable with some forms of Protestant Christianity, because I was raised in it, but for the most part, religious discussions stress me out, because hearing someone else's religious practices can make question my own expressions of morality, unfortunately. My roommates were super nice, though. I even mentioned I was trying to become a teacher, and they suggested I try teaching in Iran, but I tried to nicely explain there might be a culture clash. They tried to reassure me the U.S. news blows things way out of proportion and I would be safe. I thanked them politely, but ultimately decided not to go, and instead found a job a few miles away from the college.

I am Pakistani American and I remember episode but I didn’t remember that the family was Pakistani. I guess it because most of the Pakistani I know wear scarfs that match the outfit and that the outfits the put them in the show don’t really match the traditional clothes we wore. And most of the Pakistani I know show their hair including me and it was more of an option to wear a hijab and most of the the ones who I knew didn’t wear it all the time at home. And I had to deal with a lot of Islamophobia especially since I live and grew up in NYC. Like I had to deal with years of bullying because I was Muslim while my other classmate who was a family friend’s daughter didn’t deal with it. All because she was very white passing with the name Anna while I have a very Islamic name, is tan and went to elementary and middle school in a more Greek/white neighbourhood. And it became really tiring when I was young after 911 having to educate people while I was seven when it happened and quickly had to learn that people can turn on you after going from being popular to a loner for my own religion, culture and last name. All while having teachers who ignore the behaviour of other students because Islamophobia “wasn’t” a thing. And sometimes you even have some Muslims who are very white passing who ignored helping because it was easier to stand on the sideline. I do think that it is a bit different with being south Asian Muslim or being a Muslim who isn’t white passing from at least my experience. Luckily after switching middle school went to a more diverse school it became easier since I had more support and could relate to.

When this episode first aired, my 12-year-old brain couldn't read all the graffiti fast enough and didn't really comprehend the last word. When the episode aired again, I made sure to focus on the garage. When I saw "Go back to your country" I thought, "Huh? This was the message I was struggling to read?" But then years later I realized that in the first airing of the episode, the graffiti called them a slur at the end of the message. I've studied some Islamic doctrine, and the origin of the hijab is a bit creepy. Basically, one of Muhammad's companions, who had previously tried to kill him, wanted him to make the veil mandatory for Muslim women to wear in public, but Muhammad kept shutting him down. Then his friend went and creeped on one of his wives while she was answering the call of nature at night, and Muhammad finally gave in and claimed that Allah had just revealed the doctrine of the hijab. Unfortunately, Muhammad's capitulation to get a creep to stop spying on his wives has been used to oppress muslim women for centuries.

I actually didn't think the hate crime scene was so out of place, perhaps because in my experience in the UK a lot of people will act all sweet & ignore minorities but will act super bigoted & violent when they think nobody sees. & Because of this veneer of politeness & because they're smart about doing it in secret, they rarely get caught. Sure you get loud mouth bigots who wear it on their sleeves but more often they're just nasty cowards who know that they'll be punished for bullying people, but they really want to bully people because they think it's fun & morally justified. For example, what is being revealed by the Brianna Ghey murder trial is that her murderer's pretended to be her friend while privately fetishising her as a trans girl & refering to her as "it" & other transphibic slurs. It would have been interesting if the show tackled that kind of behaviour in this episode, like a neutral character being revealed as the one who did the hate crime, but I think it still works on it's own.

Honestly people need to stop blaming races because a few people of that race did something bad at some point. Dig deep enough into history and you will find that literally every race has had people that were bad in it. But that doesn’t mean you throw the whole carton out because of a few bad eggs, because there are still good eggs, good people of that race too. you take out the specific bad eggs and the carton is good again. Simple.
