From Penny and Dijonay to LaCienega and Zoey, there comes a big division in their friendship over Noah. I take a deeper dive in to it. Let me know down below and please don't forget to comment, like and subscribe. Thank You!!!

I found it such a weird episode. Prefering white over black is more a racist issue than a colourism one. Also why cant he like Zoey for real??? They did nothing to set up Noahs racism. It felt more like oh he liked Zoey, he must be racist. Because no one can like her otherwise. The episode had such a weird way of handeling this issue...

Idk who the writer was for this episode, but they really did a poor job. - Penny and Dijonay curving their boyfriends over Noah. - Noah only being on screen for 2 minutes and barely having lines. - the group icing Zoey out over Noah picking her until she directly confronts them. - not having Noah being on screen to say this and be the villain. - letting the notion of colorism be a rumor for the majority of the episode. - pairing Zoey & Myron only because they’re the “ugly” ones - Penny’s family trying to make her feel better about not getting picked, but not lovingly checking her or her friends on how horrible they were to Zoey. - Zoey confronting Noah off screen and then apologizing to the group even though she did nothing wrong. Everything you brought up was good.

Something that never really gets brought up is that a lot of people seem to view rejection or being single as a sign of failure. Being outside of someone's preference doesn't mean that's something wrong with you. In my opinion, how you get rejected is more important than why you get rejected. If someone politely turned you down, even for a stupid reason, they still respected you enough to consider your feelings. If someone rejects you rudely, odds are they have a bad personality anyway, and you dodged a bullet by never being with them at all. Your respect for other people shouldn't be determined by whether or not you'd date them

As a Mexican American who has much more indigenous features, I understand the dilemma of colorism. I know it’s engraved in our culture in Latin communities and Latin America. I know that in media, there is a preference of lighter skin Latinos, but that episode really irked me. They blamed Zoey for not getting the guy and instead of going to confront Noah and get to the bottom of this, they go the quick route and blame Zoey. And that’s just that episode don’t forget that in the debate episode, Maya says that Racism is prejudice and power so they can’t be racist to other minorities, only jerks. Man GTFO with that shit

It really felt like Noah was treated as a plot device to set up the girls' internalized misogyny. If they wanted to tackle colorism, we could've gotten a story where it did started out as a date at first but we see Noah being colorist and misogynist about women of color to Zoe, which made her extremely uncomfortable and break things up with him for real, but nope. However, the ONLY colorism that was featured on this episode was how Penny and Dijonay didn't mind leaving their darksin black boyfriends for a lighter skin black celebrity...bro, they literally treated them right only to be treated like dirt.

As a white male American, I admit I don't have very much experience with colorism and was honestly not knowledgeable about it until I saw reviews for this episode. Honestly, after watching a few of those (not just from this channel), I think that if they made an episode about colorism, it should not have been an episode revolving around dating. Even though I honestly do not have a racial preference on who I date based on what their race is, I still believe that colorism could have been handled differently, like talking abotu the expert opinions of certain professions based on race as you said. As I said earlier, I am probably the least qualified person to talk about this and I am aware of that, I just wish the episode wouldn't villainize the only white girl in the main friend group. Plus, maybe it's just me, but it seems to me that her friends thought she was ugly, so they weren't comfortable with the idea that she was chosen because of reasons other than race. Again, I could be wrong, and I am willing to listen, but that's just what I think at this time.

This episode was EMBARRASSING 🙈 it set the colorism discussion back years imho - it completely fell into the trap door of presenting colorism as a scapegoat for black womens jealousy, resentment and low-self esteem. The choice to centre the narrative around Zoe was a complete cop-out. They took the easy way out and making ‘whiteness’ the villain instead of holding the black community accountable. There was an opportunity for a teachable moment about how the colorism perpetrated in our community can be innocuously disguised as preference, but how preferences can still be informed by prejudices and stereotypes of wider society as none of us live in a vacuum. The episode teaches none of that. Shockingly bad writing. The writers don’t seem to understand what colorism even is.

In all honesty I would like to see the writers tackle the issues around multiracial people, as someone in this community I’m generally not accepted as a legitimate member of minority groups and not seen as attractive to some . Colorism does play a role in this issue since I actually fit the “ genetic jackpot “ for African Americans but I am still not seen as desirable to some members of the community as well.

Also another issue, her friends never really consider Zoey's feelings. They uninvited her to the party like it was Zoey's fault that Noah liked white girls. Even called her too ugly to get attention from Noah and being white is why he liked her. I may get hate from this but I don't think anyone benefits from colorism when it comes to forming a relationship esp if you want a meaningful relationship. Being a light skin Latina, my first boyfriend only liked me for being light skin Latina. Like Zoey, I never got much male attention. When the relationship ended, I was heartbroken, esp since he ended things with me to pursue a relationship with another girl who was darker skinned than me, she was Indian. He even told me that I was so pretty but he likes her more to pursue something serious. It did hurt when I saw him treating her better, I just felt there was something wrong with my inner beauty. I just felt I was nothing more than an object. I so agree with the whole situation with the glasses and the situation with Myron. If I rmr correctly Myron also hit on Penny who is also light skin. As for glasses, even in the college episode Zoey got glowed up, she wasn't wearing glasses anymore. I wear glasses, many ppl think I look better with them than without them. Robert Downing Jr looks better with his glasses.

Thank you for speaking on colorism. I never saw the episode but I've witnessed colorism in high school (raised in segregated South GA where light skinned was preferred over dark skinned) and as much as I love our classic films and shows (House Party, Sprung, Martin, etc.,) I hate how colorism was displayed. Darker skinned (lazy, ghetto, no sense of respect, devilish) vs. Light skin (hardworking, prim, proper, respectful, angelic). Thank you for breaking this down. I didn't wear glasses (even though I needed them, lol) in high school but I was considered nerdy because of my grades and people always wanted me to be with a light skinned guy. Most of the dark skinned guys I knew only dated light skinned girls so I felt objectified at times plus my mom was strict so dating was very limited and she only wanted me with white guys because of her hatred towards the black men in her life (her father, my father, and others that hurt her). A lot of projection towards me and I learned later on by older relatives that my mom's features (light skinned, long pretty hair) were desired by a lot of men in our hometown and people always wondered how she end up with my father who some said was ugly (he is not ugly and is very handsome; he was considered unworthy because of his personality and skin tone.) I've always had an attraction to all men no matter the race but when I dated a white guy, it was a risk because his parents didn't care for me. It hurt for a long time because of the race relations but it never bothered me to see interracial couples or stop my attraction to other men later in life. I've dealt with light, dark, white and honestly it is all about how you feel about yourself and that person. Choose character over color.

Colorism is still a big problem in society. And we need to stop glorifying the “ lighter you are, the beautiful you “ because it’s make people who have darker skinned less beautiful and gives them a bad mindset about themselves. Anyone who has studied colorism in communities of color, gendered colorism, and the manosphere targeting men and boys of color would know that that episode of proud family louder and prouder is not actually about colorism (like it claims to be). The moment they made it about zoey dating a part-white biracial guy with a white gal fetish, it was not about colorism anymore (but more about interracial fetishism and objectification). With a few tweaks, that episode would have been a better fit for a story about zoe being used by a mra/incel/pua of color as a revenge tool against gals of color (that are the same race and/or ethnicity as him) and how she got closed to being sucked into the manosphere. [Probably not a topic the creators, executives, and producers of proud family are familiar with or have experienced themselves, but it is a huge issue that is still relevant now and would be a great and important topic to teach their teenage girl audience. There are even real-life examples they could look at to tackle a topic like that - jt tran, fresh n fit, andrew tate, kevin kreider, fung bros, tommy sotomayor, hamash, kevin samuels, alice zingdar (a white woman that worked with jt tran), heather b johnson yu (a white woman who married a korean guy who is implied to have anti-feminist, incel, pua, and mra beliefs), just pearly things, Lauren southern, ann coulter, tomi lahren, christian walker's dad, that one biracial bachelor candidate who picked the racist white lady that participated in pro-confederacy events, shake from love is blind, andrew liu from love is blind, bartise from love is blind, jarrette from love is blind, sk from love is blind, Kwame from love is blind, david chang, david choe, steven yeun, ryan higa, Elliot rodger, kanye, kelly anne conway, Andrew yang, Ramesh vivek ramaswamy, etc.] No breaking up of happy couples required; just penny and her friends warning zoey about the guy she's dating being an incel mra pua dudebro. [Though honestly, that is not the only time proud family can tackle the manosphere. Proud family can also make an episode where some of penny's cis straight male friends get close to being sucked into the manosphere pipeline.] Seems like that episode was the creators' response to the people criticizing them for the gendered colorism that was in the original proud family and how they treated dijonay than an actual attempt to tackle colorism. There also seems to be a lot of executive meddling that resulted in that episode being presented the way it was because the story had one female writer but the executives, producers, creators, and rest of the writers are cis straight men (so the episode definitely wasn't the first draft of the story, which makes me suspect the female writer's version of the story was nothing like the episode and actually tackled colorism). There was no reason for a disney princess party or a celebrity entering the school to be part of that episode, so my guess is that disney restricted the amount of episodes they could release and the creators and executives decided to combine some episodes. Zoey dating a guy of color with a white gal fetish, penny having a disney princess party, penny and dijonay having a fight with their boyfriends, and a celebrirty entering their school for some contest could have been separate episodes. [And honestly, everyone knows that win-a-date/dance-with-a-celebrity-for-a-day/night events don't count as real dates.] A proud family episode about colorism would have had penny learning how she benefits from colorism conpared to dijonay and maya (and trudy compared to her sister diane). [The creators probably thought doing this would deter from the message of emphasizing family over friends, but that is a poor excuse when you realize that suga mama and aunt diane exist in the proud family universe.] (Before anyone brings up lacienga, she is not afro-latina so two separate storylines would have to be tackled if they want to tackle lacienga and colorism; one about colorism in hispanic latin communities and one about poc that are part-white and/or white-passing benefiting from colorism, part-white privilege, and white-passing privilege conpared to non-mixed poc, mixed poc that aren't part-white, and poc that aren't white-passing. There are not enough hispanic latin characters or part-white characters of color in the show to effectively pull off those types of episodes.)

Preferences are fine, policies are problematic. What’s the difference? I’ve always had a preference for oatmeal raisin cookies. It’s not that I didn’t eat other cookies, chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, peanut butter, no bake; they’re all lovely. Just because I had a preference doesn’t mean I wouldn’t accept and thoroughly enjoy other cookies. Now I have a policy about not eating any sugar. It’s part of a framework for how I structure my life; rooted in my personal values. When it’s junk-food policies are fine. When we’re talking about people the question becomes what larger values is that policy rooted in. That’s where the problem lies.

There are three ways I would skin this cat. 1 would be for the boy to ask Dijonay out. it would be subversive of the guy preferring lighter for darker and it could go to a weird place in how he really likes the Darker sister. The problem with that is Dijonay is already problematic for being too stereotypically ghetto and her two timing her boyfriend that goes to a different school would be overkill. 2nd The guy could've fallen for Lacienega. In which case the guy would have to be more explicit in not liking black girls or else Lacienega would be too self absorbed to notice his preferences. I could imagine Lacienega just saying the guy just likes her more than he does them because she's awesome. Now that I think about it; she may not learn the lesson she was supposed to learn from that story line and just kept dating him the rest of the season. And finally, the guy could've dated Zoey and instead of her girlfriends ostracizing Her they could've been happy for her and invited her to the princess party. Lacienega on the other hand would be making her signature Digs at Zoey's expense. After Lacienega makes a colorism comment out of earshot of Zoey then Maya can confirm it as a rumor she heard in the Salon. There would still be the big blow up at the princess party but instead of Penny getting comforted by Sugar momma she could follow after Zoey chiding her friends as she leaves. Instead Sugar could show up after the party to console the girls that think the boy doesn't like them for their skin color and Penny can do the same for Zoey because of the girls. There Zoey can explain how the boy isn't really sure why he likes her more. Noah Barker can tell Zoey how he's surrounded by vain starlets or his own greedy/envious family who reminds him of Zoey's friends. Noah could tell Zoey how she reminds him of a make-up artist who he liked because she was nerdy. it all culminates with the dance and people believing the rumors they want.

Eh, I think you are looking at it from a wrong angle. 8:26 There doesn't have to be anything wrong with somebody for you not to date them. In my native language we have a metaphor for situations like this, I'll try to translate it properly. "When someone tells you they like apples, you don't ask them why they don't like oranges". Or close to that. There doesn't have to be something wrong with red apples for me to like green apples more. Same with people attractions. There isn't anything wrong with women for someone to date men. And so on. Attraction isn't a conscious choice and if the person doesn't have some really big psychological problems that lead to full on prejudice than leaving them alone is what's right. Everything else I agree with, there is stereotyping of darker skinned people in multiple communities and it needs to be presented in some way in media, but this example is definitely not the right one

Maybe this is a controversial but in my opinion, her fake friends were bullying Zoe and giving colorist energy towards her. The heat shouldn’t be towards Zoe. It should be towards Noah, and the system that brings Black people down. If Zoe “didn’t get it” like demusard said then she wouldn’t have been friends with people of color and support them in the first place. She never agreed with Noah and never considered herself better then dark skin girls and women. In fact poor Zoe didn’t even know he liked white girls until all her “friends” started being extremely mean and cruel to her about it. Putting Zoe down to make themselves feel better because a guy didn’t like them is the exact type of behavior Noah was doing. It seems like her group was not being sincere friends.

As I remember having someone explain to me (I'm white but I'm part of an ethnic group in my native country that has suffered intolerance (ps when I say that, I'm talking more about my grandparents' experience, not mine don't worry)). ) that sometimes it's not even skin color but hair type and face type that will cause more prejudice to the person. And how different can it be in a black, Latino, Asian, Indian or even white community (yes, there are places where having traits considered a Jewish, Irish or Polish stereotype can cause these kinds of reactions). It's really insidious, the micro aggression, judgment and euginism subtext. I think it's important to talk, to explain the complexity of the subject and not demonize others (seriously, no one would date this girl because she's a nerd? It must be because she's white? WTF, her friends sound so mean).

I feel like the creators were trying to catch up to some political trends from 2020. But in doing so, I feel like they showed something pretty heinous. That being that it doesn't take much to be called a bigot these days. Noah came to the school and asked a girl out. That's pretty benign, but in doing so the main cast accused him of being racist. Then without confronting him directly, and getting his side of the story, they just attack Zoey, the only main white character, over being given an opportunity they coveted. Then they gaslighted her into not taking this opportunity in the name of solidarity. And the one who started the rumor was Maya, the woke activist character. Really, this could be a low-key parody of woke media, but I doubt the writers intended for that to be the case. As I've said, the episode shows that it doesn't take much to be called racist. Basically, if a person of color doesn't like or agree with someone or something, they can call it or them racist. And if someone is labeled racist, then that gives others license to harass and abuse them. Racism is a real thing with real consequences. To toss around accusations like that, or to weaponize them (because they are weaponized), would have disastrous effects. I'm white, and I might be called racist after posting this comment, but I can say that if anything I do were to possibly get me called racist, if it just took someone not liking me over something, or that me being white automatically makes me racist, then the end result would me avoiding people of color just to avoid getting called racist. Sure, avoiding people based off of skin color is racist, but it'd be the lesser of two evils essentially. And frankly, this is more of a problem for people of color. It means that actual reports of racism will be discredited and less likely to be believed. Worst case scenario for us crackers, complete cultural segregation. For everyone else, vulnerability towards real racism and hate crimes with little to no protection. The end result is the overturning of the accomplishments of the civil rights movement and a return to what came before. Once again, this episode would make for a good parody. But I think the writers were actually serious and trying to keep up with political trends. I would have no problem with a colorism-based episode if it was done correctly. But this one was so poorly written, it satirizes the very thing it was meant to be about.

And honestly, I liked Dijoney in the original show. In fact, I had a crush on her. I was especially jealous of how she pursued Sticky. As a kid, the idea of a girl pursuing me and me playing hard to get seemed fun. As an adult, the dating scene is pretty one-sided. To me, Dijoney being loud and ghetto was not a bad thing. In fact, I liked it. I'm into ghetto girls, goth girls, witchy girls, bad girls, and just anyone that's not the conservative and traditional type. And you might consider this to be weird, but I tend to prefer darker skin toned women over lighter skin. Melanin feels really nice, so I like women who have more of it. What I have a problem with is when girls treat people (guys especially) like shit. And Dijoney got pretty haughty and entitled once she started dating Darious. Women don't have to be traditional and conservative to be good people. And there are plenty of mean, manipulative, and even cruel women out there who are traditional and conservative. As an adult, I get what people say about her and stickey, but personally, I'd rather see a girl chase guys around with no success than for her to get a boyfriend just to toss him aside when someone better comes along. And that's what Dijoney did in this episode.

I’m just finding ur channel and already saw ur recent videos. Good work so far. I even saw ur video about Zoey and briefly mentioned this episode and I already said my summary thoughts on this episode. This wasn’t a “colorism” episode but more racist cus it was White vs Black rather than Light Black vs Dark Black which that IS colorism and I’m glad u explained it that’s what that really is too. As u said, if it was about the guy picking Penny over Dijonay because of her skin color then yes that would be colorism and made a lot more sense. But no they went after Zoey and basically attacked her which made this more about race and that made the episode more worse. They made it seem like it’s wrong that people can’t have preferences and yes choosing a race/ethnicity over another is a preference as long as it’s not actual hate over another race. Like how I’m half Black and half Mexican and I prefer Asian and Latina. Yes half of me is in the top two, but it’s not because that’s the same race as me or I feel like I have to stick to my own kind. Overall it doesn’t matter who I’m with as it’s not important, but anyone else outside of those two wouldn’t be my first choice. And yeah for Dijonay and Penny to have guys with them already is messed up too. They want to get mad about what happened and yet they’re over here acting like they don’t have someone with them already like hoes 😂. If anything I only agreed with the guys in this episode and I even felt bad for them.

I feel like the episode should’ve focused more on the colorism issue itself instead of being salty of Zoey. So maybe it focuses on Dijonay vs Penny or maybe Maya since Maya is also darker skinned. in the episode it doesn’t necessarily have to be a boy they like specifically but maybe it’s shown to have better treatment. Or a really cool person wants to be friends with only Penny because of her complexion, says something rude and colorist making assumptions on the character’s personalities because of their dark skin. Then they could highlight more of Dinonay’s/Maya’s insecurities and flesh out their characters in the show more. Dijonay could also tell Penny that she just doesn’t get it or understand instead of her telling Zoey. Or even Penny is aware slightly but doesn’t think it’s actually colorism but rather an insult to her friends until diving deeper into it. Idk something of that nature. This episode surely had potential but missed the mark greatly.

I haven't watched the new show, so everything I know about it is from your videos or other videos. I wanted to comment my thoughts cuz I've seen a lot of hate about this episode. It really bothers me how they scapegoat Zoey here. First, they make it seem like she's too ugly or nerdy for any guy to like her - thus the ONLY boy who wants her must be racist and only likes white girls. That's incredibly demeaning and I have no idea why Zoey still considered them as her friends afterwards. That's so insulting because they basically imply Zoey can't get a boyfriend unless he's racist, as if the ONLY attractive feature about Zoey is her white skin and nothing else. Sounds like Penny and co. are the racist ones now, to reduce Zoey to whiteness and nothing else attractive otherwise. Second, they blamed Zoey, the victim, when they should be blaming the supposedly racist boy instead. Third, they treat their own boyfriends like crap, too. I don't know why their boyfriends didn't dump them immediately after seeing them going crazy for another boy to that degree. Finally, I disliked how Zoey apologized to them, when she did absolutely nothing wrong at all. Why should she have to apologize to her fake friends who treat her poorly, who insult her, and who reduce her to being nothing but white skin? Her friends alone should have apologized, not Zoey. By forcing Zoey to apologize, the show is pretending that Zoey is equally at fault, which she was not.

Seriously, they could have done something better than that, I don't know, where Zoe's "friends" behave as such and will talk to Noah about his preferences and if he really loved Zoe or it was because of her skin color, but no, just They were jealous saying ""why is the ugly one in the group and not me?" showing that the issue with Zoe was never wanting to be her friend.
@txferretgirl
@txferretgirl 11 месяцев назад
The episode handled the situation poorly, they could have done it better with just a few changes. for one, from what we are shown, the girls just seemed jealous and made assumptions based off a baseless rumor of a 'friend of a friend'. They used that to blame Zoey, straight up telling her that no boy would pick her over them because she's the 'ugly' one with their tone. They could have fixed this issue by having the boy give actual hints. We don't see him actually do or SAY anything that hints he won't date girls of color. They needed him dropping some charged comments, or even some 'you girls just aren't my type.' something to give a hint that he really is judging them based off the color of their skin. Even if it was as simple as being nicer to penny and more stand offish to dejonay. This would give more reasoning to things they experienced and making it important for Zoey to recognize these clues and then make the choice to leave the boy behind. Heck even showing him actively snubbing zoey's friends would have given SOME reason to see something is up with this guy. Instead they seem jealous and bitter and use the race card to blame their good friend because a cute boy they wanted liked her. For all we knew, he liked Zoey. In fact until they jumped to the colorism thing I thought they were going to go in the direction of him wanting to date a 'plain' girl to seem more 'down to earth' to the press. Telling zoey 'you just don't get it' when at that stage she literally did NOTHING wrong and there was nothing given directly to give those clues, just makes it feel like forcing victimhood where it wasn't shown. Zoey is a great friend, and they did her dirty here when she had every right to be defensive in the situation without being given more to push her to the realization that he's not the kind of guy she wants to be with.

You are one of the few people that actually understand having racial preferences is not just a preference when you start saying you WONT date a certain race. That becomes closer to discrimination or racism because yes not everyone of a certain race looks the same. For example i have a preference for people of color, i just find darker skin tones more attractive. However i wouldnt refuse a white person, nor would i phase out white people. I just wouldnt actively seek out white people also if i see a very attractive white person i would definitely go for it. So yea people need to understand there IS a difference when you have racial preference. Is it just a preference or are you holding biases?

Thats a good thing to point out to (the preference section of the video) and the same thing I would read on XQC's comment sections, preferring to date a certain type of woman isn't necessarily bad, as preferences does not equate only dating said group and not dating any other, but more so what you prefer. But it should make you question as to why, I am mainly attracted to white women and men, but I understand that originally came from three places. 1. My dad pushing this view onto me that black people basically had to act white 2. I was surrounded by more white people in schools than black people 3. environment, moreso that growing up in the 00s and early 2010s, white beauty was pushed heavily.

i’m not black, but i’m indigenous, and i feel like they were just trying to do too much with this episode. the fetishization of white women by POC men is definitely a conversation worth having, but not like this. it is not the fault of someone like zoe for just wanting to believe someone would like her! it’s on the man to address his own internalized racism/colourism. the most colourist thing about this episode was the girls throwing their darker skinned boyfriends to the side for a light skin guy. the desire to be closer in proximity to whiteness hurts POC communities, but it also hurts the white people like zoe who are being fetishized. colourism and fetishization are nuanced topics that deserved their own separate episodes with a better understanding of the cause and effects. it’s not just “white girl bad”, especially when she just wanted to believe someone liked her, it’s a much bigger generational and societal issue. i discovered your videos recently and i love your approach!

I’m a white girl and I totally understand where a lot of brown/black girls come from when they say they feel like lighter skinned girls always get chosen over them, being that at one time, white was literally the beauty standard. But I really hate this episode. It actually promotes colorism/racism, because Penny and Dijonay wanted Noah, who is lighter skinned, over their boyfriends who have darker skinned. They were also racist and mean to Zoey because she was white. Maya just had to start some bs about how he only dated white girls when we really don’t know that. And dating preferences are totally okay. If he were bashing women of color, that would be different. But he wasn’t. I’m sure if he picked LaCienega because he’s “only into Latinas” or Maya because “he only likes black girls/really dark skinned girls” they wouldn’t have an issue with it.

Maybe instead it could have been a set up where there was a play or something (either held by the school or not) and an important role specifically needed someone black and we could see some characters of varying shades and skill audition. Maybe one of the characters who’s darker is just absolutely amazing at it but they go with one of the characters who’s lighter. They could somehow figure out the character being lighter was why they were chosen and it could lead to a lot of hurt and insecurity for both. The darker character feeling hurt and insecure for being looked over for their skin color and the lighter character feeling hurt and insecure for “only being chosen because I’m lighter” and even doubting their skills because of it. Very simple and straightforward but also very human for both and showing the sorta double edge of it and how hurtful it can be for everyone involved, even those technically benefiting from it. Literally just off the top of my head, not even some heavily thought out concept, it’s literally that simple to think of a more appropriate premise. The actual writing will still be challenging because of the heavy topic but the premise isn’t really that hard. And tbh I think, while it can apply, going with anything romance related was a mistake to begin with.

And Zoey's not a La Cienega, you know what I mean? 😅 I don't think she would've rubbed it in any of their faces that she got the 'hottest' guy. Everything that happened after was just super unfair for her. Noah shouldn't have been used to demonstrate this concept. Zoey should've gotten a cute boyfriend just because.

Honestly the fact that penny and dijonay already got boyfriends makes this storyline harder to write. I think not making it about who he is picking romantically would help it a lot. Maybe noah is into Lacienega and now they are dating and he does not like dijonay, he makes shitty comments when she's not there. He could even say mean things about maya, like this it would drive the colorism theme more since she's also darker skinned. He can talk about how loud Dijonay is and ask why Laci hang's out with her at all, and such, but he thinks penny is fine. Like this we show his general prejudice against dark skinned people. And let's face it, Lacienega refusing to believe the guy is being prejudiced would make more sense, since her character is kind of mean already. I can see her saying "You're just jealous that my boyfriend is a famous actor Proud!" in that very condecending tone of hers.

The more I think about this episode the more I think if they tweaked it alil it would’ve been great. Like if the boyfriends came up and pointed out, how the girls were ready to drop them over a lighter guy. And if Zoey had a chance to say “let me ask him about it. I don’t want to believe a rumor.” If Zoey knowingly still went out with the guy after he said mean things about darker girls, then realized it’s wrong and hurting her friends. It would’ve made Zoey actually in the wrong, and the other girls could have learned they were also guilty of colorism.

If they're cute and we click - why would I gaf about their race? I'm not too bothered by cultural differences mostly because it's just more things to learn about your SO, and even if you come from the same culture you'll still have to learn their family and relationship dynamics, their worldview, etc. I'd never date a religious person though, or someone who's political views are way too different from my own, it's just not gonna work out and I don't want to even try.

Penny would have worked out way better for being the focus of Noah's attention but they didn't want to smear the main girl for also choosing the "lighter-skinned" guy over her established boyfriend. What it boils down to is they "couldn't" have the ones with boyfriends break up to be with him because that would have been the focus of the episode but they are fine with these young girls openly drooling over a guy they can't be with since they are taken, then blaming Zoey that they have loving boyfriends and can't date him. Want to know a small change they could make and fix the entire series? Make Mya a secret villain! We have never had to have a character in the proud family to beat us over the head with their wokeness before and I would argue that it was better seeing these woke perspectives in the past because they didn't have someone there to "spell it out" for them all the time allowing them to grow naturally instead of being told how they should be... Now making Mya a villain doesn't have to also villanize wokeness but they have already shown her being surface-level woke and she is antagonistic in most episodes... So you have her "exposed" for the fake she is and have her explain how they "are not friends" with the MANY examples of how she actively tried to mess with them. Then Penny's relationship would be strained and they could have one "mean girl" instead of interchanging which of the "main" girls in the villain of the week... Mya is basically a Woke LaCienega and we really don't need two girls who are rude to their "friends" just because they think they are better than everyone else...

Even if they DID have this episode focus more on one another instead of using Zoey as a means to made white people look bad basically, to things would've still ended up being the same regardless. It would still show how utterly selfish Penny and her friends are when it comes to who Noah would've picked over one of them, and it would've ignored the matter that boys, like women in general, have their own sorts of preferences that would differ from person to person. I know I'm pretty late on this but it still has to be said: When it comes to race and skin color, everyone has their own particular type of person they have more of an attraction to, be it the type of skin color they like more when it comes to black women, or if they have an interest to someone that's not black at all! I, for example, am one such person who's far more interested in women that's not the same race as me and I tend to be more disgusted by most black women more than others for various reasons. The difference there is if I knew someone that's like Noah and is into someone that's not black, I wouldn't judge them harshly like these girls did. Granted that would be if I was a part of a mostly black group myself but I digress. The point of the matter there is simply that the whole Colorism BS is just that: BS that's been conjured up by black people.

This is just a really big nothing burger. What if Noah turned out to be gay? Would they get pissed at Michael if Noah chose him? But wouldn't that be homophobic? Or what if Noah was white? Would they be okay with him dating them, or would Zoey be allowed to be pissed off at them because he didn't choose the white chick? I mean, I'm a white dude who's preference is white women. Would I be labelled as racist for preferring not dating a black girl, even though I am playing within the same rules they set in place, which boils down to "date within your race"? At the end of the day, date whoever you want. We're meant to all be equals, not be forced into relationships that we'd be unhappy in, that's just repeating what people did decades and centuries ago, where gay people were shunned as well as inter racial marriage.

What would have been more interesting if he would have pursued the white girl and started talking s*** about her friends saying very colorless things and she would have called him out and her friends been confused as to why she didn't want to date him

Actually, preference can come in the form of luxe to dude some black dudes just like the way white women look more than black women and some Asian women like the way white men look more than Asian men. I think people just get very offended over it because it’s just a small population of people that do that but a lot of people that do you do it are not harming anybody. My whole problem with the show is it because he was in a tractive dude who had a preference and they all got butt hurt but let’s say someone like Myron did the same damn thing they wouldn’t care because he’s not desirable

Yeah, they go after Zoey because of a remor that Noah only likes white girls. I think racial preferences are weird but I can see how they can come about without there necessarily being racism involved - but it's weird that that's the conclusion they come to as if Zoey is the only white girl in the school? It's even weirder that Noah admits that that is actually the reason like... again, why Zoey specifically then? And then the basis behind their believes is that it's because supposedly nobody would ever want Zoey otherwise... like not only is that writing trash, but Zoey needs to throw her "friends" in the bin right along with it Edit: Could have easily made this better by taking out their shock and anger at Noah initially asking Zoey, still have Miya expose the rumor, have the girls then be concerned for Zoey's feelings which causes Zoey to get upset and defensive thinking her friends think she's unattractive, and then the entire thing would at least make more sense.

Watching Noah in the episode is not like when he started school in the storyline how it scripted the proud family louder and prouder Noah he was just the pretty boy had a pretty privilege and also having a preference towards Zoe because very not explain what did he seen Zoe not because of her looks or personality because of her skin colour but Penny proud and her friends They were just attracted to him because he was good looking the entire episode was not about colourism it was about having attention getting jealous of Zoe because towards the way friend they were jealous of her for no reason so what is the concept of colourism in this episode zero 🙅🏾

Skin color alone just seems so unlikely because there was another white girl who would be considered more conventionally attractive than Zoe but she still got passed over too. I mean, yeah she did start dating him at the end of the episode but why didn't he go to her first?

First off, I just want to say that racial preferences are stupid. Second, I think the episodes premise could have worked if Noah got a bit more development and didn't have to blame Zoey. I get being upset, but at least puts some blame on the guy enforcing these harmful standards.

Like yes having a race preference is definitely WRONG, but it was more of a racism issue more than a colorism one. Zoey didn't do anything wrong, and her "friends" are basically making her feel bad for honestly just being white and being Noah's type.
@Commenter839
@Commenter839 10 месяцев назад
Honestly I don't even think having a racial preference is wrong, but it's all about how you approach it. If you're not attracted to a certain race, and have to turn someone down, you don't say "I'm not into your race" or put them down in any way. You just let them down in a respectful way. And honestly all things considered Noah was pretty respectful when he turned down Penny and her friends at the start. He shouldn't need a reason to only be into white girls, but what he should've done (and did) was just let them know he's not interested, and move on.
