Do clients sometimes slip through your fingers? Have you ever felt like you had someone sold on you, and then they walked away? It can be frustrating to enter into a conversation about possible work, only to have a potential client shut it down. So how can you know if someone is serious about working with you? In this video, Chris discusses why chasing after a client can make them walk, or run, away, and how to get a client to commit.

There is nothing more powerful than telling a client to shop around and get multiple quotes - I love doing it as it shows that you're confident that you have something to offer that the competition doesn't offer or they offer it at 3x the price, always works lol

I remembered this yesterday from an earlier video and killed the engagement on a project. The prospect was being a bit too vague with the scope of what they wanted, and it was making it difficult to price. I asked why me (after they showed me some reference work of what they were looking for), because they obviously liked the work they showed me and they told me it wasn’t just me, they were shopping around. I recommended they go with another option then, because that wasn’t my specialty. It was pretty clear to me they were focused on price and I’m trying to separate myself from that market. I do photography, not design - but I find that the industry suffers from the same core problems. The difference is it seems to be behind the curve on the value revolution design is going through. I’m excited to get the jump on using these strategies more in my business.

I had a very similar situation not so long ago. I design t shirts, like a streetwear style and a client approached to me looking to get a couple t shirts for a project, they were the complete opposite from what I usually do and to be honest, pretty easy to do (really minimalist, just some random text on the t shirt) but I ended up just turning down the project, we never got to understand each other and it even tho it was easy for me to do the project, they just made it difficult because they didn't really know what they were looking for, other than "we just want it to be minimal"
@joshgalt2022
@joshgalt2022 2 года назад
It’s interesting-my approach is almost like: you can be my client if you are easy to work with. I definitely want as many clients as possible and very much appreciate their business, but I just don’t have time for peoples bs. Somehow this is lead to more and more people asking me I will work with them-no advertising-no marketing-almost all word of mouth or me approaching the client direct on phone or ftf

@Chrisdo In the book Never Split the Difference, Chris Voss says the only time to use a “why” question is when you are asking a proof of life question, which is “Why me?” To your point, it’s a great suggestion Jonathan Stark to ask that Why question. Just adding more support to your video. Thanks

My creative agency is pretty established in 2 industries. Its easy to get those kind of clients, but its pretty niche and the client pool is becoming limited. Theres two other industries I’d really like to do some work in, but don’t have any related past work to show these kind of companies. I have a good opportunity to do work for a really respected company in one of these industries, but I’ll have to offer more competitive rates, and sell myself a bit harder to get them on board. However it will make getting other clients in this industry much easier to sell to. Should I use this company as a sacrificial portfolio builder, knowing that they will not recognize me as the high end agency in the future (because im discounting my rates)

Really? Simply copying& pasting of J.S.‘ content without adding adding any value makes this completely redundant. Also, having some basic understanding in sales and staging yourself as if you’re an expert doesn’t make you one. Any professional would outmaneuver you with both of his hands tied up behind his back in the blink of an eye, going like „WTF? The title could just as well be ‚No signature, no contract’”, like how can someone even do a whole video on something so fundamentally basic…? This is part of the pricing negotiation, which requires a desired product or service upfront; people who watch this are in a different situation and want to know how to get enough clients, even leads. It may help them to convert a few, but is not solving their initial challenge at all, as you should know perfectly well.
