The Psychology of Malignant Narcissists - Academy of Ideas

The central characteristic of narcissism is an inflated sense of self. Narcissists are overconfident and admire themselves to a degree that is not warranted by the reality of who they are, or what they have accomplished. The narcissist’s infatuation with a grandiose self-image leads to self-absorption, reducing their capacity to empathize with the feelings and experiences of other people. Narcissism exists on a continuum; some of the milder forms of narcissism, such as identifying with an idealized self-image one creates on social media, are unhealthy, but relatively benign. At the extreme end of the spectrum lies the pathology of malignant narcissism, in which one identifies with an illusory self-image of moral purity.

Thec creation of an "ingroup" (people like themselves) and an "outgroup" (people different to themselves) is an important part of the narcissistic mindset. The ingroup becomes a source of power for causing suffering to the outgroup. The narcissist feeds both off the worship from the ingroup and the pain from the outgroup. (Yes narcissists can enjoy the suffering of others).

If you've not had the misfortune of having a close relationship with a malignant narcissist, it's unlikely you can understand how malevolent they are. I dumped her once I recognized what she was, and she spent the next 4 years trying to destroy my life, very successfully in many instances.
@darthsilversith667
@darthsilversith667 Месяц назад
I honestly feel the same way with a girl I dumped 15 years ago. Every time I try to date someone different.. they end up knowing things that they shouldn’t know.. stuff they wouldn’t know if it wasn’t for my ex telling them. Not anything serious or messed up, but just little things that current partners could use for little jabs against me. I have had this feeling in several other areas of my life like with work and friends. That woman destroyed my life actively for almost 3 years and she’s still trying to today. I finally had enough of it about a year ago and completely blocked her on all social media and any mutual friends we had that she could’ve maybe used to get information about me.

Just a brush-in with these freaks can potentially ruin your life. Some stupid mall food court girl had the state police investigating me for supposedly drug dealing because she got butthurt I didn’t buy her dinner and told her I didn’t buy her dinner so I could see if I should even ever buy her dinner. When she had her tantrum I told her to go find some chump in Ed Hardy jeans to take her to Olive Garden (this was like 20 years ago now lol) because I don’t date children. Even her friend eventually told me bc she thought it was ridiculous and thought I was funny about the whole thing. These people are emotionally babies.

@@darthsilversith667oof, lots to unpack here. First of all, sounds like you have a persecution complex and believe that you are the center of this woman's life. That sounds narcissistic as hell. Secondly, you say you dumped her 15 years ago, and she's been trying to ruin your relationships ever since, but you just blocked her a year ago? Doesn't add up. Here's my bet: you enjoy the drama with this old ex. You also blame everything that goes sideways in your current relationships on her. Some would call that scapegoating. You think that you're so special to her that she would spend 15 years chasing you around. Good sir, I believe that YOU are a malignant narcissist and, just like in the video, that very trait prevents you from recognizing it.
@tonyperkis854
@tonyperkis854 Месяц назад
The truth isn't enough, though. The most difficult part of dealing with narcissists isn't actually the narcissists - it's their flying monkeys. Narcissists amass power from these sycophants who believe, enable, and idolize them. They will smear you, attack you, and cast you out for speaking ill of their god. Regarding a more personal level, narcissists do their evil behind closed doors. That way they can keep up appearances and maintain plausible deniability against anything you might say or expose about them. The flying monkeys will never acknowledge the narcissist is capable of any evil because it contradicts the narcissist's carefully curated image and reputation which the loyal yes men fully believe and support. I tried to expose a malignant narcissist - many times - only to be gaslit, called a liar, and betrayed by people I had foolishly thought were decent and honest.

My mother was a malignant narcissist. For example, we got into an argument about the Chevelle SS once. She said it didn't exist, and that I didn't know jack because I wasn't alive then. I pulled up Chevy's own page on the car, and my mother's response was "anyone can put anything on the Internet". Later that week, a Chevelle SS was on an episode of Top Gear, and my mother was like, "See I TOLD you Chevy made a Chevelle SS"! When I went to correct her, she screamed that I was trying to gaslight her. This kind of behavior was the norm, not the exception, and as a result, I have no real clue about some of the most important events in my and my family's history.

There are many external and uncontrollable reasons for a person to slide into addiction (speaking out of experience). Denial can have many causes, which results are no better for the affected, but just diminishing a person for it as "malignant" is pretty much the same in a different role and shape. All the best and my sympathies, for I would take my own life, if I did something you're hinting towards to my children.

Marrying a malignant narcissist was the worst mistake I ever made. 12 years later I'm still wrestling with life-and-death health issues from the severe PTSD, insomnia and stress induced. I would have been recovered, except we had a child together before I realized. Now I've been a single father for almost 6 years - would have been 8 years but for another terrible betrayal by the ex. Experiencing significant heart pains even as I write this. This video is gold. It is extremely insightful. After many years of learning about this personality disorder and related psychology, from a lifetime driven by similar family dysfunctions and the absolute motivation to understand the scapegoating and gaslighting and family dysfunctions - this video offers new levels of nuance and insight. I have gone back and forth in my judgments over the years; when I have periods of peace and amicable relations with the ex, I give her the benefit of the doubt that she's grown out of, or at least matured somewhat beyond the dysfunctions. Then she throws another wrench in the gears and perpetuates and repeats the same insane, childish, bizarrely narcissistic behaviors. I don't want to judge her like this, but it's crystal clear that she has this disorder. The damned tragedy is that I believe she really does have goodness in her heart and spirit also. I believe that's what has torn her up so much inside. I think the deciding factor was the people around her - above all, her parents - enabling and condoning her behaviors and identity. Otherwise, I think she may have gone through the identity restructuring and deep emotional transformation to become a healthy, caring human being with decent values and priorities.

I am glad you got away. My father spent 52 years married to a malignant narcissist, and by the time he died, my mother alienated everyone -- all his relatives including me, his only child. When he was diagnosed with cancer, my malignant narcissistic mother tried using Munchausen by Proxy to bait me to give her control over my finances. I went no-contact after she refused to let me talk to my dying dad because I didn't give her my money. We are no-contact now, for my safety and the safety of my children. I feel sorry for my dad, but he chose to stay with her, and enabled her abuse. Thank you, for caring for your child more than my dad cared for me. May you both stay free of your ex-spouse.

It's so fascinating how many times this video and people in the comments use the word "they." What a beautiful world it will be when the words we use are "I" and "we." I have looked into my soul and found the "malignant narcissist" and now I see him in you as well. He is part of who I am and he is part of who you are. May we respect just how wonderful and terrible we can be and all aim for that "good" which mysteriously reveals itself to us as the God who sometimes commands us to stand confidently taller and sometimes commands us to kneel humbly low.

@@azloii9781 I think it's important to define these words. "Narcissism is defined as: excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one's physical appearance. selfishness, involving a sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, and a need for admiration, as characterizing a personality type." The key word above is "excessive". Who is Wise enough to say when self centeredness is "excessive." The point is this: taking care of ourselves is absolutely vital. We are stewards of ourselves. We must do the job well. However it can be overdone. We must seek moderation after taking care of our needs. At some point it can appear to ourselves and to others that this vital function is over functioning and can damage relationships. If you and i had a relationship, I would desire you to take care of yourself, but if you take care of yourself and don't ever think about me and what I want or if you find excessive envy and jealousy of my fortunes that you belittle me or try to sabotage my pathway forward in order to quench your negativity, then I would find that highly disagreeable. It goes both ways. I could do the same to you. It's a hard balance. Some people are highly critical of people who take care of themselves. That's just low. However, at some point we need to find a proper balance so we can improve ourselves and maintain strong bonds with others. This is where we wrestle with our narcissistic tendencies. Best of luck on your journey!

On my dealings with Narcissists - I noticed that when they realise that you have figure them out, just by a certain look on your face or a subtle smile, they usually crash down and find hard to keep the facade around you and you gain their respect. I am always nice, kind and polite to them, however I make sure to have 'smiling eyes' every time their try to show themselves as Good or Perfect or they usual self-aggrandising nonsense . Nothing works better than trivialising them. It won't make them like or hate you more , but makes you unassailable to them.

Lies require constant maintenance. The more that know of the lie, the more eyes upon it, the more pressure the lie must bear and the cracks become easier to notice. The more involved in the lie, trying to perpetuate it, the more quickly it degrades, whether by error or betrayal. Eventually, falsehood will fall apart. Sometimes catastrophically. You might be able to bury the Truth under lies. But, those lies will erode under constant observation. The Truth is Indestructible.

I'd like to give a shout-out to recovering narcissists. I have a friend who is in a constant state of self deception. 90% of our conversations are about how likeable she is and how everyone wants to be around her. She spends almost every second worrying about it and working to accrue more followers (she calls friends) that really only exist in her life to praise and make her feel good. But there are moments, when she has done/said something that hurts my feelings, that I see the true good in her. She stops a moment when she sees the hurt on my face, pauses as if running a systems error reboot, before apologizing to me with true sincerity. Then never makes the same error again. The interaction is quickly forgotten in favor of discussing how likeable she is, but I see those moments and I remember them. I've also seen how her parents treat her like her very existence is a bother to them, and am surprised she isn't worse. Hang in there guys. You're hurting, and for those that are changing, I wish you all the luck.

Thank god I am aware of that now, but damn... it's hell to get out of there. to take responsibility for myself, when I was raised with no consequences etc. It's like a loop. I blame my parents for letting me blame everyone else. Step by step I work my way out of it. But feeling all this pain and fear I was avoiding with these protective mechanisms is hard. And it's so hard to find help. You find very much information about how to identify a narcissist and how to avoid them or break up with them. But very little about how to get out of it. many times it's said "narcissists can't change, just leave them". And I think "ok, so what do I do? Just hide in my basement to not hurt anybody?" Thank you for putting videos like this out there to spread awareness.

Politics is the perfect place for the narcissist and they know it. It takes a very cunning, person with extremely flexible morality to succeed in that theater. Even if they're not when they enter, it's not long before they tap into their own evil. The reality is, decisions aren't made in congress or the senate. They're made in the board room, as the "the law maker" either they accept what they're told to do and be rewarded; or they can be replaced by someone who will.

Great everyday information that I hope will become more commonplace in the not too distant future. We can actually build Heaven on Earth though too, we just have to believe it's ours to manifest. If we are caught up in victimhood and self-hatred, we attack that in others, and get caught in the loop. You only break free when you learn to love and forgive yourself, and then slowly everyone else. It's a process, but holy shit is it worthwhile.

This leads to proper dialogue, where by "dialogue" I mean a discussion in which both parties are prepared to be wrong. This needs humility and courage, for true humility is a state of continuous courage. As Jacques Ellul put it "Propaganda ends where dialogue begins." What is propaganda if not the societal technology of mass deception? Though as Ellul also points out, effective propaganda must be rooted in the truth and is thus often very hard to detect.

Very useful video that understands their issues and that creates a small chance of hope rather than stone walling or radical acceptance. Narcissism is hard to deal with because their childhood is "patented" by shaming & guilt tripping. It's their maladaptive coping mechanism that they learned as a child and became a habit and eventually hard coded into their mind. I want them to realise that they just need a very unique and gifted therapist to help them self reflect and process it in a healthy manner. It has huge devastating effects on others especially the ones close to them. For me, it was quite painful for me to see them left marinating in their own toxicity. Especially the grandiose type of narcissism
