That is such a lovely video. Thanks for doing it. I live in Cornwall but come from Berkhamsted and lived in H.H. in the seventies and know a lot of these pubs personally. In fact I used to work in the Fishery Inn way back in around 1977 or 78. You have brought back lovely memories. xx
I lived in Leverstock green from 1963 until 1975; the Litten Tree started life as the White Horse (I think it was built a couple of years after we arrived), I survived a Guinness Drinking Competition there when I was 15. I think it had a spell as the Green Man before its current reincarnation. The Leather Bottle on the other hand is the same now as it was when I lived there, & as it probably was 100 years before and will still be 100 years from now!
You missed the Grove Hill Pub forget the name now it's where they filmed the "Alf Garnet Saga" I lived in Old Hemel many years ago and it's sad to see some close. My wedding reception was in the old bell, was last in Hemel back in 1996 for a few pints. Now live in Australia.
"The Cupid". In that scene Alf Garnett goes into the toilets and finds himself standing next to George Best! The pub is called "Greenacres II" now. The film also shows other scenes of HH, such as the old Pavilion and the pedestrian bridge across Marlowes. I also live in Australia these days, but grew up in Grovehill in the 70s.
Many of my old watering holes here - and a few I've never heard of. I'd kill for a pint of Marston's right now, or better still some Hook Norton or similar. Sadly they are unavailable in Australia. Still, the weather and laid-back life is mostly unavailable in Hemel Hempstead, so on balance, no regrets ;-)
I believe the full moon was the odeon before it was a wetherspoon. I was at the old bell gate last night, a nice small local's pub, we then moved to the old bell which was awful.
Yes thats right Full House used to be the Odeon Cinema. Such a shame so many of these pubs have disappeared, even the George is no longer there, and its been around since the early days of teh New Town
@tillywitch6 Thanks tillywitch6. All the filming was done after my heart by-pass operation when I had to do as much walking as possible, so I walked all around the town! Coming from Cornwall now, you may be interested in a short comic video I took while in Devon which refers to Cornish beer. It's called 'Bob the Boozer".
Hi Grahamaus, Yes that seems to ring a bell "The Cupid" I lived 150m away in Craigavon Rd and had a chance to chat with Alf (Warren Mitchel) when they were filming in a scene where he is about to clip the ear of some young cheeky boy when up walks a copper. That was in view of my flat. I helped build the 12 self build houses in 'Putter Croft' back in 1972-73 and used to drink in the cupid in my wellies after building for the day. I now live 50km North of Melbourne what general area are you in Oz
i meant the white lion in queens way or was it the white horse just up from the fire station think theirs an office block their now called boston house ? cant say i know the salmon tho maybe before my time ? did you get the papermill in aswell apsley ?
I think it was the "Salmon & Trout" in Queen Street, the "Salmon" was in Apsley opposite "The Fountain", yes a long time ago. Don't think the "Papermill" was built when I took the original video. You've got me thinking now of lots of Hemel pubs which have disappeared!
I did video "The Patch" but somehow missed putting it in (plus a couple of others). The Heath Park was in because the video was originally going to be of changes to the Hemel scene but somehow morphed into Pubs! An impressive list of pubs which have gone but you missed one "The Salmon", but the "White Lion" is still alive and kicking.
@vkhken1966 I think there was an Odeon "cinema" which was converted into a pub. I don't know of any movie theatres in this country. Then again, I have seen a lot of baseball hats and "I love New York" t-shirts around here so perhaps time travel does exist.
@oldhempsteadian yes it was the Anchor although i think they just did it up don't think it was demolished, but for the people in boxmoor no matter what its called these days it will always be the Anchor
you missed the post office arms out in boxmoore aka the patch in puller road dont know why you took a pic of the heath park tho gone like so many others in hemel like the plough that use to be near the magic roundabout /saracens head/the fountain/albion/white lion/ the original railway pub / wagon & horses/
you also missed out indy jax use to be findleys cafe above the shops in town blink and you miss the doorway also the great harry aka harrys bar now the function rooms on the bus station ? and the crabtree in adeyfield? i thought the place opposite the fountain in apsley was the apsley village club now knocked down and rebuilt ?
The Beehive is now flats and The Venture has had a facelift and is now The Jubilee. Both the White Hart and Kings Arms in the High Street have been improved and the Society has closed and is going to be flats.
