'Purdey' is a household name when it comes to guns, and they are world renowned for their sidelock Over and Under and Side by Side guns.
A few years ago they brought out the Purdey Sporter, which was well recieved but not fuly built in the UK. Now, in 2022, they have relaunched the model now fully built in their London Factory.
We travelled up to Purdey at the Royal Berks, to have a play with it, joind by Andrew Ambrose, the Director of Sales at James Purdey & Sons.

The laser engraving is the best I've ever seen- period !!!! It looks hand done. Very beautiful sporter. Worth every penny, in my opinion. Thanks Jonny for a terrific video on a terrific gun !!!

Nice to look at, probably nice to hold but don't forget your roots. I also agree with a reply you made about a good gun can cost less than 100. I just bought a near mint Miroku SBS for cartridge money.

I know what it is, we need to see a £170-200k gun and a factory tour. I've seen their own videos and they need a Proof house re-do. Please, make it so chaps, it's what we need.

Nice. Back in the day I helped to make the first 50 + guns. I did the original files up of the action which they 3d scanned and they still use it today. Price wise I would say that's pretty good. However it should be hand engraved.

Nice review. RBSS is a great ground too. ~£50k for a brand new Purdey is pretty good value for money tbh. Shame I’m missing the spare £50k.

Is a Rolls Royce worth the cost? No. But I'm very happy to have enough people to buy them so they don't go away! I feel the same about Purdey. I visited their London shop many years ago and the socks were $40/pair. OK, but they were Purdey socks. The over-the-counter SxS shotguns I handled were, how do I say, magical. However, the $110,000 O/U felt, in my hands, like a dog. Gorgeous, yes. Lively and smooth, no (at least to me). I would love to shoulder one of these "Sporter) O/U's but it probably won't ever happen. All this said, I hope Purdey and Sons is in business when my great grandchildren are grown. They simply represent "the best of the best" and that usually translates into a handsome price!

For an upland Hunter there is nothing better than a classic English side by side, small gauge that we usually use in the US but lighter weight often longer barrels the swing is fine. But over here they are outrageously expensive. An older Purdey can start at $30,000.

I took a ride yesterday in a Lambo Murciélago [one of my brother in-law's four Lambos] and a FIRST for me. Needless to say that there are items that will equally do a task, but there are items that will also do the task but with everyone watching and filming. I can't afford something like this but it is fun getting in the vicinity [or sitting inside]! Damn cool!

Beautiful guns. Some of my friends have an old Purdey or H&H, while I’m on the range with only a Superposed. But at the end, I think the craftsmanship, materials and ornamentation are the main drivers of their reputation. I haven’t been convinced by superior performance, from what I’ve seen at least. Still love Purdey for their hunting wear alone.

For all of you moaning about the price ...your missing the point ...you can buy a £9 Casio or a £30,000 Rolex both tell the time but the Casio doesn't show your wealth status and thats why most people who buy an expensive car, watch, boat, plane or house...if you can't afford the Purdey ...well move on and buy a Baikal....but stop putting down a good tool because you can't afford it ...sour grapes are bitter

You can get a Rolex for £4K or £40K, I remember when a mate of mine got a porche boxster and I told him 'yeah but it's not a 911'. I don't doubt it's a good tool but it's at the point of there being better alternatives at a cheaper price. The brand itself is, without question, historic and prestigious. I probably wouldn't run out and get a Baikal but I bet I could get a better purchase experience elsewhere with another prestige brand.

It's all very well putting all these expensive guns on the market to the point of saturation and with the restrictions that are sure to come on ownership they will end up being very expensive money pits. I am 80 years of age and we have seen the best shooting days, also three local well established shoots have closed down this year after many years.

If you haven’t watched the videos put out by Purdey that show how they build their guns you owe it to yourself. It helps explain why these guns cost what they do. It’s the attention to detail, fit and finish that command the price.

It IS a beautiful gun, Johnny...however, even without VAT ( in Canadian dollars ) That's $67,579... More than I paid for my used 2016 Aston Martin Vantage V8 GT. That's just a bit much. I'll bet the upkeep and maintenance are cheaper, however!

But I Drive my cars, and I Shoot my guns, and I wear my watches because what's the point in having something beautiful if you don't use it ?? Especially if it's expensive.

Brilliant! Although that big billboard saying Purdy on the side of the action would have to go unless they plan an paying me for the advertisement. Also you can’t really compare it to a weekend car or boat because you can seduce your mistress with them but a wonderful firearm nonetheless. What many need to realize is that a certain class of society can drop that on a shotgun as easily or more so as some can on a mossberg trombone action. It’s wonderful to have options for all! Make mine a Westley Droplock however. 👍🏼👍🏼

It's still unobtainable for me but for plenty of other people it's a perfect opportunity for someone to own a halo firearm. Also, it seems to occupy this perfect place where more people can experience the honor of owning a Purdey and not cheapening the brand.

If I had watched this video just one year ago, I would have made exactly the same comment you have made here. Unobtainable for me. However, Covid... I lost my job. I couldn't believe it... 25 years of service gone in a puff of smoke. Then suddenly completely out of left field a couple of opportunities came flooding in... I went from working as a government employee to now owning a film production company. Mate whatever life throws you... keep going and never say it is unobtainable... you just never know! Tomorrow (Monday) I am on the phone to Purdey... For context, I live in Australia.

Outstanding Mr. Carter, but, after viewing your presentation I am experiencing something of an "ARRRGHHH" moment. Is the trigger plate, which I have my heart set on, really worth almost twice as much? It isn’t a P&V. the original was made by them to Purdeys design And finished in London. Now it is made entire in 🇬🇧

In this guns defence - 1. London guns have always been more expensive than provincial guns. The cost of living in London is higher, higher rates, higher wages etc. 2. It has more man hours than a longthorne, whether you value you this is down to the owner. 3. They could nullify points one and two by doing more machining, moving the factory out of London. However buying a purdey doesn’t really make you a customer, it makes you a patron - you are protecting a piece of British gun heritage with your money. A little bit like buying art (point three is shamelessly stolen from people more eloquent than I)

Given the response to this vide, it might be worth trying to get inside the Purdey factory and showing how these guns are made and why the price tag is what it is. It is of course inflated with the Name, but if that's what they have to charge to survive, then ill accept the price. To be honest though, as another commentor stated - i am not the target market for this gun.

Maybe I am just a salty lesser, aggrieved by his purchasing power. Just seems overpriced if you calculate the man hours and lack of engineering talent compared to Longthorne.

Yeah, who wouldn't want a Purdey in their cabinet, it's another classic British brand steeped in history. It's just overpriced for what it is, man hours or not....or maybe I'm envious as I can't afford one. I dunno, I think I'd rather pay Simon Reinhold to search me out something tasteful with a story to tell (Or a Longthorn!)

i don't envy Purdey. They made a cheaper gun by making it abroad and people muttered in disaproval so they brought it back home. The price goes up, to warrant them making it here and diverting time away from building their best guns (which are worth considerable more) and people mutter. If they left London, or used less talented labour (that hadn't been through 7 year apprenticeships) to reduce the price of the gun, people would mutter disapprovignly. I think this gun suits them well, its as cheaply as they could make a gun without devaluing their best guns, (which are works of art and should be worshiped) and its specifications are designed for someone who shoots occasionally but doesnt want a gun designed for a niche. It would be nicer if it was £15k, but it would also be nicer if average houses on the south coast weren't 10.5x more expensive than the average salary. Regardless of what people think of it, i was proud to have shot it. Which is not a feeling that comes too often.

I'm not detracting from it at all, it is a Purdey and every single minute detail would of been gone over a hundred times like all hand built british prestige brands and yes, I'm bloody envious I can't afford one. @@tgsoutdoors I have to wonder how it compares in value to a krieghoff. Obviously, diminishing returns are at play so it isn’t 2-3 times better despite costing 2-3 times. But is it even a little better in any way? Comfort? Feel? Action?

Honestly, its looks are uncomfortable. Very nice stock, very nicely finished. Engraving looks nice but laser on a Purdey ? The main discontinuity is where the broad stock narrows to the barrels, the fences just don't flow. Forend is too fat and blocky, but then I am one of those weirdos who prefers a Schnabel. I'll pass 🤣

If my new business venture gains police approval then we shall be hopefully producing video content more technical, home gun smithing, classic guns, affordable guns etc.

@@tgsoutdoors it's not like saying that at all. There is a commodity car market that serves 99% of people who would like to drive. There is an OU market that primarily serves people with thousands of whatever currency in expendable income. The proof is literally the 100 pound shotgun. They are 100 pounds because the supply is high and nobody wants them, because everyone in the sport buys high price (but not necessarily high end) guns. The market just doesn't serve new players. The fact a High Tech with shit wood costs more than a grand is preposterous

If you can figure a way to build and sell High Techs for less than a grand, that is made of quality materials, handles well and is reliable - i will order 200 to help get you started. I stand by my original statement, if i want an over and under, i can buy one for £100 and if i buy wisely , it will be good. If i want a new over and under built in London, I shall continue to dream because in no plausible world could they be as affordable as a mass produced gun in a part of the world with lower wages. Whilst we are dreaming, i would really like Rolls Royce to be the same price as my Mitsubishi

That price tag is laughable- and before someone says its a purdey-it's monoblock, basic grade, machine built ,very average engraving it is not a gun that is turning heads or shooting better than the rest, supposedly 200hrs hand work , geez miroku hand chequer and hand file actions in, is that gun 10x the mk11 in looks, performance or quality, absolutely not
