In 1942, Air Force Capt. Harvey Ross (Dana Andrews) flies his B-25 bomber and crew during a crucial bombing raid on Tokyo, but their plane is shot down and they parachute into Japanese captivity. Ross, Lt. Canelli (Richard Conte), Sgt. Clinton (Farley Granger) and the rest of the tight-knit crew are put through an illegal civil trial before a triumvirate of Japanese judges. When secretly offered their lives in exchange for vital military information, the crew must make a unanimous decision.

I love the speech at the end by Dana Andrews. Its exactly what America did do to Imperial Japan, the most ruthless, vindictive, arrogant war machine ever created. They started it...we finished it. I feel sorry for anyone who is confused or upset by that.

It apparently worked at the time as a patriotic and propaganda film, but the Hollywood fantasy is too much for any real scholar of WWII today. The Japanese would never have allowed a defiant speech or the slightest disrespectful behvior. The Kempetei (Japanese Secret/Military Police who did the questioning) did not operate this way, either. It was all far, far more brutal than depicted. I'd recommend reading real P.O.W. accounts, such as those summarized in 'Pacific War P.O.W.: A Few Remaining Skeletons' (which is what the Japanese commander in Burma called them when they arrived for slave work on the Death Railway).

I have enjoyed this film since first watching it on TV (commercials and all) in the early '60s. Then, to me, it was simply a war movie, but then I came to realize its function as a propaganda film - cum - drama. And recognize the fine Chinese actors seen thereafter in so many other movies. The last time I saw Richard Loo (General Mitsubi) on screen was in a small role as the National Chinese Major in "The Sand Pebbles."

It is an extremely hokey film-however there was no hokum about the courage, skill, and patriotism of the Doolittle Raiders. And the cruelty and criminality of the Japanese warlords was legitimate.

What a silly thing to say. If there exists a God with the power to influence human events, then all good people must be its sworn enemy. Go for a walk in the woods and see all his creations eating each other alive until they themselves are killed by ticks, disease, or starvation. Open your eyes. See the real world.

So why didn't belief in a good God die out thousands of years ago@@falconeaterf15
@falconeaterf15
@falconeaterf15 29 дней назад
@@TennesseeT Lots of reasons. Parents pass it on to their children who then make it part of their identity, without really thinking about anything other than pleasing their parents. It was also used as a form of social cohesion, being taught to children in schools etc.. Also, religion is often said to be the opiate of the masses. Why be scared and confused by the unsolved mysteries and cruelty of nature when you can just ignore them and say God is awesome and kind. It’s all quite silly.

And I suppose you would wipe out all History that doesn't fit your narrow ignorant views. It was a different era. If you are educated, you know not to act or accept these views. I myself know that such behavior is not now tolerated. But at the same time I realize this is history and should not be censored. If you still think like you do. Then you are no better than the people who started the G.D. War.
