An accomplished musician and one man act with twelve albums under his belt, Freddy Charles is a singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist currently based in Los Angeles. With a pop/rock sound influenced by hints of jazz and EDM, he records every note of his record himself and acts as his own engineer and producer, giving him complete artistic control of his musical vision.
Freddy got his start in music as a drummer, giving him a strong rhythmic foundation to build on as he began studying guitar, songwriting, and production. His early records found a small devoted fanbase as he began cultivating his style and coming into his own as an artist. Eventually, he would find a national audience when several of his songs were picked up by Sirius XM and broadcasted across the country, as well as being featured in several independent films. As he continued to make increasingly adventurous records, he became an in demand session drummer and educator.

Interesting stuff. The drumming techniques that have emerged since I took lessons decades ago are amazing (Jojo Mayer is another excellent teacher of them). It's analogous, I think, to certain capacity-expanding advances made in skateboarding as well (kickflips, ollies, etc.).

Hey Freddie, great vid. Getting pretty good at this but only up to a certain speed. I see how fast you can do it but can’t seem to get a feel for the thumb when trying to take the technique up to higher speeds. Any insight from you would be appreciated! Thank you

Hey Freddie, thanks for the reply. I use both grips for different applications. At this point I have just finally begun to feel comfortable with the technique. I am specifically referring to my right hand when trying to generate a faster tempo on the ride cymbal. Thank again!

Hi Richard. When the speed increases try to bend your thumb at the knuckle and almost start to slide it across the stick. Use the tip of the finger so your nail is almost touching the stick.
