I loved Mr. Sheibel, I bursted into tears when she goes back to the orphanage and discovers how proud of her he was 😭 that’s the first time you see Beth break, a mixture of surprise, guilt and love, beautiful, beautiful scene! ❤️ 🥺
Same for me! We didn't know many things about Mr Sheibel and yet he was very touching and supportive of Beth "in the shadows". Also seeing Beth realising that someone had never ceased to believe in her since she was a child, that hit me
Yes, saw this scene yesterday on youtube and had to cry. It seems to be the destiny of the old: they promote the young and then they are forgotten. Mr Shaibel was the source of all her success (and, of course her passion).
Isla Johnston as young Beth was absolutely captivating. Her descent into addiction was heartbreaking. And of course Anya Taylor Joy as older Beth was brilliant. I felt the most tender towards Beth’s mom, Alma. Her portrayal of an addict, broken and yet such an incredible, loving mother, was so genuine. I thought she and Beth had the same careful and hesitant, deeply loyal and true love for one another. Ah...eff it. The whole cast played to perfection. 🙌🏻🥰
I didn't really see her as 'an incredible, loving mother'. I felt she was as interested in the jet setting and the nice hotels as she was in Beth, at least at first. I came round to the idea she did really care for Beth - but 'incredible mother' is definitely not the phrase I would use.
@@jettferox5660 'Her mother was primarily trying to keep the lifestyle she had become accustomed to going'. I didn't get any sense that jetting to hotels here and there was part of her previous lifestyle. I don't know what entrepreneurial idea she had, either. Funding Beth in chess competitions after seeing her win money in one? I didn't really feel she was particularly 'committed' to the tournaments, either. She encouraged Beth because she was tickled by the idea of making a bit of money. That is how it came over to me. She was very decent towards Beth, too. She didn't rip her off, etc, and while she was protective towards her, she liked what it did for her in the first instance. She was a reasonably talented, charming lady who had ended up stuck in the suburbs with a husband who wasn't that interested in her. Beth's genius was a chance to have a little spark - I didn't dislike the character for that, but did think her a little self interested.
@@jettferox5660 I suppose strictly speaking it's entrepreneurial, as she took a risk to make a profit. I think it sort of landed in her lap, though, when Beth won the money, and had already taken an interest in tournaments herself.
Recently I found out she is 13 actually, but I dont think anyone knows much about her life beacuse that's her first big role (and I hope she will keep her privacy as long as she can)
I am so happy that Marcin Dorociński is getting recognition. A humble human being, fights for animal rights and a great actor :) not that the rest is not good ;) but you know Polish pride buahahahaha
It is terrible that all the reviews & press coverage on Queen's Gambit have forgotten to mention Isla Johnston (the young Beth Harmon) as she almost did not exist. The success of the series is partly due to her, playing so well to bring out that introvert character of Beth as a 9 years old which helps to set a firm foundation for Anya Tayor-Joy to develop character further as teenage & later adult from episodes 2 -7.
Whats wrong with admiring a married man? Having a crush doesnt mean ruining his family. Some men are just for dreams , fantasies. (Same goes for women)

Show was pretty amazing... and not a big fan of chess ... but I think i am now... as all the actors preformed great.. but There is something about Anya that I can’t explain.. I don’t know exactly what it is.. can’t put my finger on it...
I fell in love with Beth, not really Anya, but Anya playing Beth. It might be her big round eyes (never seen anything like it in my life) together with those weird lip movements. Plus she is somehow shy and yet pretty outgoing at times.

The way she said she's not into fame is the same with me asking bout her why she playing lowkey when her brilliance screams, and it was after I saw her film Morgan then saw her again in split. I'm so proud and happy for her in Queen's Gambit, as usual she did so well, she embodied the character perfectly.

The Queens Gambit is a great advert for Chess especially for girls and non-Chess players. The story line is based on the American, Bobby Fischer who famously only played 1 e4 before winning Game 6 in the 1972 World Championship with The Queens Gambit against the Champion, Boris Spassky from Russia in which he sportingly congratulated Bobby on a great game and was considered the best game of the Championships. Bobby Fischer was a Chess prodigy and at 14 years old won the United States Championships. The one trait that is incorrect is the drug substance abuse as I have never come across that from any Chess player of any ability being that it would affect their game negatively. I thought the performance was excellent in which the chess games were from those played by past Masters. Adjourning a game did occur in the 1972 World Championship for which they are no longer used for many years since the development of chess engines and players playing shorter games to a finish.
