Here is my review on the Dodge SRT-4 and ACR! One of my favorite cars of all time. So much so I have owned 3 of them, including buying one brand new back in 2004. I even point out a unique quirk that Doug Demuro missed in his review of the SRT-4.

Enjoyed ur video sir. I'm around ur age and remember vividly when the SRT4 first hit the streets. I purchased my first one in 2004 in black. Like you I ran into an issue with someone cut my father off after running a stop sign and totaled it. I enjoyed the car so much that I to purchase another one after the accident. A black ACR. That I still have now w/ 63k miles at the moment. Like you said remains a thrill and enjoyment everytime I get to drive it. Over the past 15 years even brought two of my three children home from the hospital in that car so it's like one of the family. My son now enjoys it equally as much. Enjoy your project will subscribe to your channel and enjoy seeing your updates on the car.

Wow! I had no idea that there were only 211 '05 Orange Blast SRT-4 ACR built, that's good to know. I'm in Michigan and I bought my Orange Blast SRT-4 ACR mid summer of 2005, it was my 2nd car and I only drive it in good weather (never seen snow), been garage stored most of the time and it currently has less than 9,800 (nine thousand eight hundred) miles on it, essentially, it's all stock with some add-ons like a blow-off plate, K&N filter, Hurst short throw shifter, and retro tail lights. I do nothing special storing my SRT-4, I use fresh fuel stabilizer and top off the gas tank, pull out the battery, and I put my car cover on and that's it. I done that in September 2018 and I just pulled it out of storage on August 15, 2020. That's almost 2 years of just sitting, I thought for sure that I was going to have problems starting the engine but nope, I installed the battery and it fired right up and ran great, aired up the tires and drove it home from the storage garage. If you're curious, I only use Star Tron fuel stabilizer in my engines. Thanks for your video!

This is by far the most comprehensive and personal review of one of the most overlooked Mopar’s of all time. I recently drove over 200 miles to look at a black 2005 ACR with 67K miles on the clock but unfortunately the deal couldn’t be done. I was looking to trade my 06 Jeep Srt8 that just hit 100K on the odometer but the the dealer wouldn’t honor the car gurus price drop from 13K to 11.500. I had to cancel the deal just on principle but I definitely enjoyed driving it and understand how it’s “sometimes more enjoyable than the Viper “ thanks again for another informative and interesting video.👍🏻

Bummer you couldn't make a deal on the ACR. Thanks for the feedback!
@njshift

If you can piece together a Mopar stage 3 kit go that route. Aside from the increased performance you’ll also increase the value and desirability of your e-blue. Otherwise a quick spooling turbo around the 480whp mark (or less) will maintain stock like drivability and keep the car reliable. Great review. Those are two of the cleanest srt4’s on RU-vid.

Life at Speed keep an eye out on eBay and FB. I’ve seen a couple turbofolds pop up in the last few months. Are you looking for all Mopar components like fuel pump, rail, toys, etc or would you consider going with aftermarket parts to complete the install?

@@njshift they arent reliable stock you think 460hp will be stock reliability thats funny. Also anything over 300 wheel is not that funtional for the street you will have zero traction 1-3 all you can do is highway pulls. If its a drag car sure but for a fwd street car 300 wheel is more than enough
@njshift
@njshift 3 года назад
@@lollol-xp4mc I’ve been actively around these cars since 2004. Along with running a Srt4 specific shop and helping operate srtforums. These cars are plenty reliable from the factory. Purchasing a beat down example or abusing/racing the car will result in a different story obviously. My reference to 480whp is what the stock block A853 is easy capable of handling. Beyond that approximate hp level is where you begin to loose stock-like drivability as those larger turbo power-bands change the whole driving dynamic. Increasing hp/tq will undoubtedly put strain on a number of components however around that power level or less there seems to be less issue. Now anyone believing you can drive a 480whp neon exactly like the stock frame td04 on the street without any consequence is thoroughly deluded. With that power level boost by gear, 200 tw tires, a good understanding of throttle control along with some common sense are essential.

After getting into tuner cars as a teen, mainly dsms, I did a lot of planning ahead before choosing a car. Worked for a year under my parents roof after I finished highschool with my first car from grandpa, an '08 focus S. Finally had plenty, decided to do a loan for credit and bought an R title lighter gold respray orange blast acr. Unlooked over from Craigslist back in 2016, it had 89k and bald tires all round. Dude was a little thug my age but I didn't care, I was ready for my fun car. Paid $6k to him and another $500 for the bank loan. I put decent at the time "firehawks" on it and cleaned up a few of its problems. It already had a bbk 3" turboback, apg bfmic and wastgate. Mopare restriction bov plate. The Cv axle went after a few days. Ran like a gazelle for a year or so, 11k miles! Then I had a date 45 minutes away.. turbo coolant return hose popped off on the highway and car got hot. I pulled over, thought I looked over everything. Said maybe its low on coolant. It needed the flush when I got it. Threw some in gave it a few and rolled into it merging back in, thinking the air and boost would help. Nope. Blew a headgasket and a turbo for some booty. Was not in the same situation as the year before and long story short 3 years of ownership hell and wasting away before it comes back. Sold it to a friend. Friend trusted his mechanic with the wrong advice instead of my own and next thing you know car is parted and scrapped... Don't sell your loved ones off to friends, and if you're a poorer life with me get your fix from motorcycles instead of cars for the mean time. Half of what I paid for that car got me an 05 cbr1000rr when I moved to motorcycles, and up to that bike. I'll find another fun 4 wheels one day. The dodge ram is enjoyable even with all its practicality lol.

Can't believe i never saw this vid before. You made a perfect summary of the srt's. But don't be too shy in the ability to drive on a circuit. I've done the necessary laps on European circuits without major adjustments and often surprise alot of people with the speed in corners, braking and of course acceleration. The standard brakes (if well maintained and equipped with quality brake pads) are really fine. So many of these cars have been trashed over the years, it definitely makes it difficult to find a clean unmolested example, but you'll save so much time, money and headaches by buying a good clean car up front. I'm super impressed by how clean the cars are! I'm the original owner of a stock 05 orange ACR and so many things are just falling apart. Plastic pieces like the windshield washer nozzles, shift linkage bushings, and dash panel; rubber seals; and the stiff suspension just gets destroyed by my pothole-filled daily commute. OEM parts are either stupid expensive or discontinued. Any recommendations on replacement shocks for the ACR? The aftermarket regular neon Konis I got after the original Tokicos bit the dust fit fine, but barely lasted a year.

Thanks! It's definitely taken some work to get these back into the clean condition they are in and we've probably spent too much, but that's ok lol. As for replacement struts I currently have the koni adjustables on the blue one for about 2 years now and they are doing well so far for me. Next round I will probably go KW coilovers, but they are close to $2k a set. Unfortunately I think the original ACR Tokikos are long time discontinued. @LifeatSpeed

Unfortunately the odds of an SRT-4 with 200k miles having any kind of maintenance records is pretty slim. The main thing is to do a solid look over of the car to check it's condition. See if there are any leaks, any splices in the wiring harnesses, weird noises or clunks, clutch engagement, tire condition, things like that. As for "the right price" good clean examples of these cars are really starting to increase in value. I wouldn't be surprised if a good clean car is over $10k now, or higher.

So I cannot speak to the BMW, but the SRT-4 depending on mileage and condition is going to be worth anywhere from $3k up to about $10k. As for reliability that will depend on how it has been modified and maintained. Mine and my dad's are both incredibly reliable, but we make sure to perform proper maintenance on them and when we make modification do quality work. I hope this helps, but at the end of the day only you can answer for yourself whether or not it is a good trade for you.

The only upgrades to the transmission currently are billet shift selector and extender, booger shifter bushings, upgraded clutch fork and pivot ball. Now when I finally get around to building the new engine I will be doing a full transmission upgrade as well. As for making a car more reliable basic maintenance is the main thing. You take care of the car and it will take care of you. Of course use good quality parts as well. One upgrade I highly recommend especially if doing a tune or big turbo you really need a wide band O2 so you can monitor your air/fuel ratio.
