Revealing both of my sim racing and sim drifting setups that I have used with exact prices. Let's compare which setup is the best for a beginner. I can tell you the mistakes I've made so you can avoid them. Both T300 and G29 have their flaws, one costs more, the other one has lower quality. Ultimately it is up to you.

You also don't need to buy the whole setup at once. You can just buy the wheel first, then get a shifter later on, then a handbrake, etc. I didn't have a shifter and a handbrake for a long time and the only issue really was that you can't really shift while drifting (unless your wheel has the paddles on the base instead of the wheel). Not having a handbrake in the beginning even forces you to learn drifting without having to rely on it for everything. So even if your budged is around 400, I would still recommend the T300 and then keep saving up for the rest.

Old logitech wheels like a driving force GT or pro has a sequencial stick shifter that can be assigned to handbrake, or just used as a sequencial shifter if you wanna go handbrakeless (they use buttons behind the wheel as paddles but you can DIY actual paddles to make it more comfortable to use). You can also assign the handbrake to like spacebar on the keyboard or something easy to press.

I only ever owned a g27 but I never had any complaints. I thought it was smooth as butter. The h-shifter felt a little cheap, but honestly worked like a charm. Especially because the whole setup with a stand only cost me £120, so I couldn't complain.

you think that because you only ever owned a g27. i had the opportunity to test my thrustmaster tx (xbox version of the t300) against my cousin's g90 (xbox version of the g29) and yeah, it's a pretty huge gap. they are priced similarly but the tx is clearly a tier above. g90 isn't ... i mean, when the game is properly calibrated for it, it works well. but it is usually not, so there's like an annoying dead zone in the center that's just awful. also it's anything but smooth

T300 was my first wheel bought it about 2 years ago. I play AC and ACC every day almost. Usually do half hour practice and 1 hour races almost daily. I have the FFB completely full in ACC and about 45% in AC. The pedals are caked in dust and dirt and it's a bit worn, but after God knows how many hours played, this thing is still performing perfectly. I can say 100% this is impressive and I recommend it to any beginner. My arm muscles have only recently out grown this beast! great wheel guys! 😄 💪

my first wheel setup was a G29 with the logitech shifter and aliexpress E-Brake. then during the covid lockdowns i decided to "upgrade" to a T300RS and TH8A shifter, since i had much more time to play. however, after 5 months the lockdowns were more or less over so i didn't have much time to play anymore and put the T300RS and TH8A in my garage storage shelfs (in their cardboard boxes). around 4 months ago i came back to them and reinstalled them on my new NLR Wheel Stand 2.0, but when i took the pedals out of the box i noticed that they were completely broken - turns out thrustmaser cheapened out on materials and used pretty weak plastics for the pedals, and during the time where my wheel was in storage it endured a little bit of heat (you know, ambient heat in a car garage during summer etc.) that caused the plastics to weaken even more and made the spring completely break the pedals entirely. and that's not all, so i got my old thrustmaster Ferrari wheel pedals (and desoldered their contacts to work with the T300RS) just to be able to use the damn thing until i order a set of thrustmaster T-LCM pedals, and my temporary solution seems to have worked just fine and dandy, that is until i experienced the first major force feedback encounter in ETS2 (some idiot rammed into me) and then the wheel stopped registering wheel spins and force feedback entirely - so since the warranty was already over i opened the wheel base up and it turns out that the rubber belt just dried out and snapped.. unfortunately i can't really say anything good about the reliability of thrustmaster products, because this is not the first thrustmaster wheel to crap out on me, my old PS3 thrustmaster ferrari wheel also had the same sort of problems, the "bungee cord" system and vibration motor have died within 2 months of playing grand turismo 6 daily. now i didn't think much of it back then because that was just a simple 100$ wheel, but when this happens to me with a 650$ wheel this is just unacceptable for me. i could have just been unlucky with a poorly built batch T300RS GT edition, but i have no way to confirm this. also the thrustmaster costumer support was very unhelpful with this situation BECAUSE my warranty was over, essentially they offered me to send my wheel and pedals to them for "inspection and repair" and then i will have to pay them for the repair fee, and shipping fee to and from their facilities. had they offered a coupon voucher code instead that would've been better or even RMA my wheel and pedals and send me refurbished ones from them that would've been fine, but that was out of the question because my warranty was over. so basically now i am back with my logitech G29 and its pedals, but at least the TH8A shifter still works like a clock. i don't see myself buying any thrustmaster product in the future ever again, even though i don't really like DD wheels i think i might just jump aboard and get a fanatec wheel in the future.. my G29 is VERY rattly and it started having a FFB deadzone at the -5 to +5 degree range (as in, FFB does not work that great when the wheel completely straight and forward). also logitech completely fucked up the G29 driver software during the past 3 years and it caused a huge headache to me after coming back to the G29 from the T300RS. the only good thing i can say about Thurstmaster is that they have pretty darn good driver software for their products - plug it in and it just WORKS. all controls are baked into the driver on a windows level, instead of using some stupid malware software to try and make your wheel work with anything, god forbid trying to enable FFB at all...

I've started with g920 with shifter on playseat and it's not too bad, but I got to know how massive difference is in belt driven and gear driven wheel just when I've added VR, RTX, Ryzen 9, ebay handbrake and g27 shifter with buttons. Just to not spend too much on everything, as it was quite expensive for me, I'll just wait a few months and probably move further with DD wheel. So yes, it's addicting.

Have been racing for 23 years on a non-FFB MS Precision racing wheel (costing fl 125,00). Two years ago I put a gamepad (12 euro) on the wheel with two tie-reps to get some extra buttons (12 buttons + 2 pushable sticks). Have been driving with that for two years until I finally got a sale during last year Black Friday at Amazon and bought a T300RSGT with 3 pedals which also included a Ferrari wheel. Difference is 1 sec per lap but the MS wheel still works after 23 years of simracing... very durable.

The biggest reason why all g series wheels are making loud clunky noises is because of bad grease between the gears. Buy new thicker grease and it's a huge difference in sound. They're all built the same way since g25 and this fix solves 90% of all loud noises on all gseries wheels. I bought a used G25 for 100 last month, applied new grease and tensioned all screws inside. It feels so much better than my brothers new g923, will apply same grease to his as well.

Funny you mentioned belt driven wheels are fine - I actually went from my thrustmaster t500 rs to a DD GT Fanatec Pro set - my thrustmaster died, after 10+ years of service and honestly it was a great, great set (had the GT steering wheel, F1 steering wheel, pedals and H shifter). After so many years of having thrustmaster I just wanted something else and the DD felt more of an upgrade than going for the current t300 (which felt more like a downgrade to me). I've played all kinds of racing games with it, some arcade other more sim like - but so far have been able to get my wheel to work. Incl. ATS and ETS2. Downside is ... yeah, the FFB is massively different. I'm using the same desk setup as I've always have and now after every play session I've actually moved my entire desk (with a tower pc, monitor and the fanatic base on it) in about a 20 to a 30 degrees angle. So, now I"m looking onto a racing cockpit like next level or playseat. Also the brake is a load cell and that's very different and will take me a while to get used to (load cell brake measures force instead of motion to interpret the amount of brake that is applied, just a FYI). Though, I do agree with you - logitech/thrustmaster makes great steering wheels that is supported in most if not all games. ps: haven't broken any wrists yet

My first sim setup was a T150 Pro with T3PA pedals and a TM shifter. I've done drifting, rallying, iracing, F1 racing. It worked like a charm, however you should optimize the degree of rotation limit, depending what kind of racing you are doing, for drifting I put it on around 420 degrees as it allowed me to drift very easily. Thrustmaster makes great wheels for entry level simracing, I recommend it.

My first wheel was Thrustmaster T150. I returned it the next day because it had this weird buzzing noise and I was smelling plastic fumes. Worked very good though, but the QC wasn't the best probably because after a quick search on Reddit I found out it was not anything uncommon, even with their higher tier wheels. Fortunately, a different local shop had a sale for G29 with the shifter for just a 30 dollars more than the T150 so I went for that. I am really happy with it for a starter wheel. If you apply some custom LUTs in AC for example, you'll get really good results and it does give you that sim-racing taste. I only play Assetto Corsa, Dirt Rally, Wreckfest, CarX, sometimes BeamNG or ETS2, it's good enough for me for the little money I paid for it. But as you said it can be loud as motherfckr. I would definitely consider buying a T300 in the future because even after a day with T150 you can tell the belt FFB is real good, but I am a bit worried about Thrustmaster's QC after my first experience.

I got the TMX (xbox version of t-150) and while I could drift with it I really had to work for it (like physically), then I got a t300 and it was a world of difference. now drifting can be pretty much effortless cuz the wheel has enough power/speed to countersteer on it's own. t150 is just too slow/weak IMO, t300 is like the bare minimum i'd suggest. for just racing I guess it's fine but once you feel the way smoother t300 you'd regret not getting that instead (I know I did)

Yes, G29 feels kinda toyish. But you can't hide the great value for the price. Good FFB, 3 pedals and sadly separate shifter. For entry level sim racing and its price it is doing same job as better wheels. I'm somewhat intermediate/advanced in sim drifting and the G29 doesn't hold me back. Even though I wish I had Thrustmaster setup, the quality and feel is much better there. I have my shifter modded for better feel - stiffer shifting + custom knob mod. I researched thoroughly before buying a wheel, and my final choice was the Logitech G920 without the shifter. It was the cheapest option if we don't count the actual kid's toys. I also knew about its problems, that it turns too slow for drifting if set to full 900 degrees. This is why I've set it to 540 in assetto corsa, and it works perfectly. I absolutely did not want to spend a lot more on a T300 for a first wheel. So I would say the G920/G29 is the perfect beginner wheel, and then you can upgrade later to a better one as you start to see its flaws. For everyone that says a logitech wheel is good enough, it really isnt... Well, if you're learning how to drift, you can manage it's quircks, but at the end of the day, that's it. I committed the mistake of buying a G27 in second hand 2 years ago,and although i said it was a mistake, i still love it, i will always love it and i wont sell it after i upgrade, thing is, after you learn everything you want to learn, you will be hard stopped by hardware, why? well, after i learned how to drift i started to want to take my progression further and further, until my wheel wasnt fast enough on transitions and i had to flick it so hard and press the clutch otherwise i would spinout, taking away my speed on leads or causing others to hit me due to low speed (yes, i use the ffb at 120 on assetto and everything is on max settings), thing is, this will be a reoccurrence on evry single game. Now, after i had the opportunity to test a T300, hell, my friend has a T150 and that thing even though much closer to my G27 performance, the wheel just responds in much faster times, so i started to want to upgrade to a T300 and hell, after i tested one, what a fucking game changer something better can be. So, my advice is, if you dont want to take things seriously, buy whatever fits your budget, but if you're like me who likes to take things further, serious and wants to learn more, being behind on hardware and equipment wont be the best and you will always be pushing yourself. Save enough for a good wheel, for example im saving for the T300 but i know theres a lot better wheels out there, it's YOUR choice, buy whatever fits your needs.

When you pulled that cheap wheel off the table flying into the air, it’s like 2am here and I struggled so hard not to laugh really loud 😂😅

i think a t300 with the shh shifter is one of the best budget options for someone who wants a belt driven wheel + shifter. this shifter is cheaper than the th8a shifter but it still feels great

I got a G29 5 days ago. Already done some mods to the G29 Shifter. Just 3D printed stuff... New longer shifter knob, and the H pattern shifter mod V2 remix. The thrustmaster setup was just too expensive. I'll start here and see where it takes me

If you're just getting started with Sim, you don't need a DD wheel. However, for any retired IRL drifters looking to get into sim drifting, I can assure you that the T300 will feel just as much like a toy as the $50 one.

Thinking about this, I started with MS's XB360 wheel, then went to the G920, then the CSL DD (8nm). Had the latter for almost two years; simply amazing. Don't think I'll ever feel the need to upgrade.

I’ve been on a g27 for the past 14 years or so, just ordered CSL DD and after reading comments like yours I’m excited to try it out

Fun fact you can actually buy kits for g920/g29 that makes them into a belt drive or justy add more ffb

Honestly you made me feel a lot better about the Driving force GT I just bought for $80 used. 😂 Deep down I wanted the Logitech G29 but since I don't have too much time to race I cheaped out. Honestly still feels really good despite how crazy loud it is and crappy the pedals are. Doesn't sound like the G29 is a huge step up overall. Belt driven sounds like the way to go if I end up using the wheel lots.

OMG, I just picked up a used Driving Force GT for $80 CAD yesterday for my first wheel as well. 😂 I really wanted a new G29 or T150 with 3 peddles and a shifter - but I just couldn't justify the cost to play a $10 game. I mainly use it to play Euro Truck Simulator 2, but it's a lot of fun in racing games as well. Cheers!

I ordered the g29 with shifter, it is a great upgrade from my thrustmaster ferrari 458 Italia which cost 140$ in my country and was a steal for what I got, I know all the disadvantages of g29 but it is still worth it for me

You can also get this products new at better prices if you are careful to look for discounts. For example i just got that shifter but for 150 new. So 50 less. Another good thing is that Thustmaster now made a cheaper shifter as well for those that want to spend under a 100.

I got a Logitech g920 pedals wheel and shifter for 150 cdn. the guy said the cable was broken so he was just trying to get rid of it. But it worked in my PC like a charm. Awesome deal to start driving sims.

Started with a G29! Used it for a month then went CSL DD at Christmas. T300 would have probably been enough to keep me happy. But the G29 was honestly very good

I started off with the t150 pro. Only complaint I have is lack of hard-mounting compatibility so far. I'd love the t300 tho.. looks like a solid wheel. Baby steps 😂

I have toasted 4 T300 in 5 years with a big wheel mounted on, this servo base can’t handle torque and long sessions. I recently switch to a DDPro with inverted pedal v3, hand break and shifter from Fanatec and it’s night and day. The accuracy of the controls and the ffb are so nice and I know I can put a big wheel without destroying anything. The T300 compare to Logitech G29 is a really nice product for sure, but you must use the OEM wheel and force the inside fans ON
