Walter, thanks for the video. I made a rag in a can. I saturated it with 3 in 1 oil, but I find in just a day that the rag is dried out. Is that your experience? How often do you apply oil to your rag in a can? Thanks again!

What a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing old info for new woodworkers so they can learn also.

Thanks for writing, I never said this was my idea or was I taking credit for inventing it. I was asked about the can, so I thought I'd explain it. 47 years ago as an apprentice all of the workers has some sort of oiled rag in a box a tin or a can. In centuries earlier they were called Grease pots where they kept tallow to wipe on tools to lubricate them and keep parts moving. Thanks for watching.

@@DustySplinters I stand corrected Dusty. It was not meant to be a put down, sorry. Some days I should not even get out of bed. Comment re- edited.

I don't believe he said it was his idea or even lead anyone to believe it was. Someone asked him about it and he explained what it is and how to use it. I personally use mystery oil.

So do you add enough oil to saturate the amount cloth you are using and then leave the can upside down for a day to drain off the excess? This would leave the cloth nicely oiled but would not drip oil onto you project or your bench if it were inadvertently left on its side overnight.

Thanks for writing, I pour some on top so the top is moist, never gave much thought to tipping the can over. I think I might lay it down one time to see if there is excess. Thanks for watching!

I'm sort of new to using hand planes and have a question. I've been using jojoba oil, now does the oil on the hand plane effect the finish on the wood? Do I have to give the wood a slight sanding afterwards or is there really no problem presented by the oil. Thanks for the videos, they are informative.

Thanks for writing, From my observations after many years of using many different plane sole lubricants is that the typical woodworking process negates any possible negative side affects of most oils and waxes except things like silicone and i avoid the really hard waxes like Carnauba. After final assembly, it is not uncommon also to go over the work with some 240 or 320 grit paper to ease any sharp bits and to just make sure all smudges and pencil lines are gone. If you do go straight to finishing without sanding, just apply a light sealer coat and allow to fully dry. Then knock the fuzzy bits off as noted above. Thanks, For Watching!
