Cool thing too is that the scene where they help John Wick up after he falls was not planned on. They all had a mutual respect and Keanu said that they needed a scene to show that, so they added it.
I read somewhere long ago that the director's main goal with Raid was actually to make the Raid 2 movie. But he didn't have the budget to make it. So he ended up making Raid: Redemption with the small budget he had and made Raid 2 later following the first movie's success.
That's exactly what happened. I think the final battle in 2 was even choreographed with angles before 1. You can find that video someone on RU-vid probably
Yeah The Raid 2 was supposed to be the follow up to Merantau with the working title of BERANDAL (translates to 'delinquent' or 'thug'). They ended up doing a prequel to the original story and called it The Raid.
@@nightmareknee942 Ya I heard that too. But atleast we got two amazing movies without some sort of cliffhanger at the end that would necessitate a 3rd movie. Even though I would have loved another Raid movie, I'm absolutely satisfied with this.
@@lethaltalon2493 In like the 'best' way. Every time, like I know it's coming and every time I watch it and I feel like I forget that it even happens and am blown away by the horror/awesomeness.
Daz, I just rewatched Raid 2 yesterday with the director's commentary track and there was even more depth to the various characters as backstory. Both films are excellent but they have different pacing until it comes to the fight scenes. The director even showed where every cut was made in the prison fight "one shot".
Mad Dog was a fcuking SAVAGE!!! It bummed me out when he killed the commanding officer though. I was really hoping he would live. He was a beast too! It's funny Mad dog has always been the only person everyone remembers his name lol. I was disappointed how they used him in John Wick 3.
yup. I think Keanu Reeves also regarded both Raid movie as one of his inspiration. That's why he always try to invite The Raid actor to some of his movie.
Generson Bryantheart if you have watched John wick 3 the main bad guys are both from Raid lol, the little guy at the end is the last guy him and Rama fight at the end the brother.
I sincerely cannot believe you've only seen this NOW! The Raid is basically my companion piece to what great action should be like in today's day and age. If the West has John Wick, then the East has The Raid. Also, first, holy shit.
bunnyfreakz every fight scene is godlike. Even with the shaky cam, the cinematographer and director understood its best to let the shots breathe and to let us see the motions.
Blue Sun I agree. The Raid 2, surprisingly, is almost like an art house movie. The set designs, story, characters, costumes, lighting... it’s all a little more experimental. It’s beautiful to look at and I believe the final product is exactly as intended, but the first Raid is a more straight forward comprehensive action flick.
@@SolidSnake240 I thought Headshot was kinda weak after the Raid 2. The Rivals/Ex Gangfriends of the Protagonist were not as Iconic as the Raid 1 or 2 Villains imo
Can't remember her name but the woman in it who played Hammer Girl in TR2 was brilliant in the film, i'm shocked Hollywood hasn't come knocking on her door as she's easily one of the best action stars out there. Considering Hollywood is obsessed with "strong kick ass women" right now its just amazing they haven't seen her talent and cast her in a big action film.
@@wallywest4727 Her scenes were just really iconic, baseball dude's aswell. And they had zero Backstory to these 2 besides both of them being assasins and they still worked better than the developed antagonists of Headshot
The Raid is one of the best action movies of all time. The Raid 2 actually manages to improve on the original at every level, including action, thrills, acting, plot, pacing, writing, and cinematography. It's like Godfather 2 or Empire Strikes Back or The Dark Knight-everything that was awesome about the original is just somehow BETTER in the sequel. You'll dig it.
As an Indonesian, when the trailer first drop I didn't even believe it was an Indonesian movie lol. It's my favorite action movie of all time, best fight scene EVER. It makes me feel so happy when it gets international recognition. Bless.
Took my friends to the cinema to watch this masterpiece premiering in our city. It was us 3 and 2 other people. Nobody could leave even for a toilet break, glued to the screen. When it ended one of the other guys stood up looked around and asked "How the fuck is there not more people watching this!?"
Ehhh... Hate to say it, but that scene was immersion breaking for me. Too many times in jw3 i couldnt help notice people "waiting" for him, keanus good an all but it was too much, too many enemies pulling their speed and getting up WAY too slow... the fight against these two nutters was the worst offender. They too good for him 😬
@@Kaimax61 yeah, JW3 had properly shown what badass and insane martial artists they were. They didn't have Keanu defeat them with some stupidly transparent plot device, and the fact they just decided to part ways instead of fighting to the death shows proper respect to these guys who legit deserve more credit.
I don't think the way they had John Wick defeat the duo was the normal bs we usually see. I think they were trying to present John Wick to be of Eastern European descent (I'm sorry if I'm getting this wrong). And one of the ways the did this was by showing him fight using combat sambo, which emphasizes grappling elements that a lot of traditional martial artists or great strikers struggle with. Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov is a popular example of this.
"If you haven't laughed your ass off at an amazing death blow in a movie you're letting the best in life pass you by; it's just a fact." - Jeremy Jahns 2020
I feel like the closest I got to that was when I was watching the first Silent Hill movie. I was definitely laughing through, but not because I found the movie funny or laughingly bad or anything - no, I was laugh with sheer glee. I remember that specifically because when the group I went with was talking about it afterward, one of them mentioned how there was some asshole in the audience laughing during the deaths and scary parts, not knowing that it was me he was talking about.
Leandro Santos I hated that fight in John Wick 3. Those two man are really great, but in JW 3 their fight were really bad compared to their earlier movies. I don't know if their style were too much for keanu or for the director, but that fight does not give them justice.
they made slower so old Reeves can match them in combat. if not, they might out speed Reeves, and John Wick would look ridiculous if win againts assassins
Iko Uwais is the real deal. He's an amazing fighter and has a great screen presence. The Raid, and especially The Raid 2, are some of the best action movies of the last 10 years. So much work went into these films it's crazy. One of the stunt men really fell off one of the ledges during the shoot out when they first go in the building. He had to spend 6 months in the hospital recovering and when he got out he went back and said let's refilm the scene,we can do it better. That's the kind of dedication that reminds me of when Gainax was just starting out and was hungry to make a name for themselves with The Royal Space Force.
The raid is a perfect movie, in that it knows what it wants to be and achieves it with practically zero wasted time. I also love how he flees from a gun, showing you that guns are just as deadly in the movie as in real life. I prefer raid redemption over raid 2, just because of how tight it is.
My brother made me watch this movie on on a whim. I have never heard of it and let's just say that my mind was blown. I did not expect that I was gonna watch one of the greatest action films ever
Squrtle the turtle agreed. Goes to show, you can make an amazing straight up action movie, AS WELL AS, an amazing action movie with added story, characters and development. Action movies can be done well, with or without story.
The first time I saw it my jaw was on the floor. The action was so intense I could barely handle that shit. Didnt think they could do the same thing on part II. I was wrong. I was sooo wrong....
If you want more Iko Uwais and intense action, The Night Come For Us is many times more violent and bloody. Gareth Evans was also involved in the screenplay and it's on Netflix.
The Raid: Redemption and the Raid 2, got slept on, except to those action fans who don't mind reading subtitles. These are great movies and Gareth Evans is a great director.
Nice review, The Raid: Redemption is a great movie. The Raid 2 is (arguably) the best martial arts movie ever made and usually I would say/write something like "I envy you for being able to watch the movie for the first time" to someone who hasn't watched it yet. But watching that movie is not just breathtaking the 1st time, it stays breathtaking even after many many viewings. It's an incredible achievement and I'm looking forward to the review!
I prefer the first Raid, it is just more memorable to me. But I don't have the best eye for martial arts. What makes the second one stick out more for you?
As an Indonesian fan of movies, I cried when Rama fought multiple thugs with his brand of Silat coz it was so, so good, I couldn't believe it. In Jakarta, my wife and I used to live in the same Apartment building with Iko Uwais's former girlfriend and I met him at the lobby, both of us in our cars as we were looking for parking space. I said to him as I rolled down the windows: Hey brother, The Raid was sssick, I'm so proud of you' He smiled, said thanks while doing 🙏 and was very humble about it
I watched the Raid II in theaters with I think 4? of my friends. We were the only ones in that screening and it was one of the best movie experiences ever.
There is a scene in The Raid 2 that after seeing it you have to see how they filmed it. In a car chase the camera starts on the outside of one side of the car, goes in a window then goes out the other side of the car.....with no cuts. It was actually pretty cool how they filmed it.
It's because of THAT scene that I viewed a lot of the car chase in 'Extraction' in terms of attempting to figure out how they filmed it. Meanwhile, I was wrong and the director was strapped to the hood of a car!
@@juggalochef2399 Surely you mean the _cinematographer_ or a _cameraman_ was there? - the director usually sits somewhere off to the side, watching their monitor.
Since you liked this and Parasite I would recommend: Oldboy I Saw The Devil The Man From Nowhere The Villainess Train to Busan The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion
Don't forget The Handmaiden! That is, in my opinion, the best film ever made. I'm fucking obsessed with it since I saw it four weeks ago. Also Joint Security Area, which is by the same director.
Hunter Ever seen Triple Threat? It’s pretty decent too. I thought the Raid was on Netflix but I can’t find it. Where do you watch these movies? Or do you own them?
If you liked Raid:Redemption, I’m going to love your reaction to Raid 2. That kitchen fight scene remains one of my favorite fight scenes. Ever. EVER!!!
As far as action movies are concerned, The Raid is a masterpiece. I felt like Vandamme after seeing this movie. Almost did a back flip and knock out my uncle unconcious.
I haven't seen Merantau, but I've seen the other two. The Night comes for us is amazing, but headshot's story is just abysmally bad. The action is great, but the story turned me off to it.
That fight at the end is especially fantastic because if you described it as a two on one to someone who hasn't seen the movie, they might think that Rama has to fight two people himself. It's rare that it's actually the good guys having to team up on a baddie who's so badass he's still kicking the crap out of them. It makes the last fight really tense.
Yo I saw the thumbnail and was like “he’s never seen this?” Seriously this is one of the best fighting movies ever. Please review “Coherence” and “Triangle.” I’d love to see your thoughts on those movies.
The dude's never seen The Raid until now?? Oh, man.... just wail til you see The Raid 2, Jeremy. It's 5 times BETTER than the first one!!! (in my opinion, at least)
The Man from Nowhere was friggin AWESOME. Perfect pacing, mood, tension. And some of the best camera work ever. There's one scene where we follow a guy as he runs down a hallway and jumps out a window to land on the street - and the camera follows him out! Amazing.
I’ve been waiting YEARS for Jeremy to watch this film, now I’m happy. Now you have seen the appetiser, prepare for the main course in the next film. And hoho, what a main course it is! I’m from Indonesia so I am so glad that we had Raid 1 & 2. Makes me proud that Gareth Evans represent my country this well and made such..... fucking brilliant films that I actually watch 100 times by now. Shame that there probably won’t be a 3 from what the director said but hey, at least Mad Dog and the Raid 2 Kerambit final boss is in John Wick 3 throwing down with Neo! :D
My God, I waited sooooo long for this review. Most of my comments I left for you over the years was for you to watch this movie. I even was willing to send you a copy. This made my Coronapocalypse! Finally! Finally! I am in tears! Dammit Jeremy, finally!!!!!
Jeremy, now you need to watch The Raid 2. I was physically exhausted after watching that movie... you know, in a good way. Edit: I hit play again after posting, and you immediately said you bought the 2 pack and will give us a review of The Raid 2. Remind me next time to finish your video before commenting.
Fun fact: Dredd was actually written and made before The Raid. But because of all the digital stuff, it was released later. Doesn't change the fact that both are awesome movies though.
This reminds me of Romancing the Stone. It was actually written around the same time as Raiders of the Lost Ark but they couldn't get it made until 1984.
"RAZORS OUT" is the name of the closing song. One of the coolest parts of the whole movie is the ending shot when the music starts creeping in then *BAM*! Credits. Song was done by Chino Moreno of Deftones and Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park. I listen to that song at leats 5 times a week. Hahaha
I first saw this movie years ago when it first came out without ANY hype. I was blown away and went and brought the blu-ray immediately. It was best in original language with subtitles. The final 2 on 1 fight in Captain America:Civil War looks awfully familiar to the final fight in The Raid. First time I saw Civil War I thought, "Wait a sec, they stole that fight scene from The Raid". This movie is just plain amazing.
I’m so happy you reviewed this! The main actor’s name is Iko Uwais and he is my absolute favorite actor of all time! He literally makes any movie entertaining! Oh BOY are you in for a ride when you watch the Raid 2!
First time watching your reviews I've always seen your videos as a suggestion but I felt like I have my personal review channels on lock. Then I saw you were reviewing the raid a movie which I loved and I clicked. Worth it.
Speaking of Gareth Evans, the director who made these movies, he did a tv-show called "Gangs of London" which is now out on Sky US/UK and will be also available on CineMaxx. Do yourselfs a favor and watch it,it´s awesome. Imagine "Peaky Blinders",but in modern day London, with various crime factions and also "The Raid"-type fight scenes.
The laughter at a really good kill happened to me for the first time couple days ago when I watched Train to Busan. I am not a horror/zombie viewer in any way, but I felt compelled to watch that based on recommendations. And holy CRAP did I have a great time. Those zombies at the beginning just mauling people over was so damn entertaining.
When all of thos stuff started happening, my thoughts were, "He's said for years that he hasn't seen it. If this lockdown ends and he didn't review it, it simply is never going to happen." Way to listen to your fans, cheers!
The raid is one of the most criminally underrated action films ever. Two of the actors from the first and second are actually in John wick 3 they werent used to their full potential but hopefully they will be in the fourth John wick
Underrated, I dont think is the right word, as the ones who actually watches it praises to the point it feels that its overrated. Lol. I think its just simply underwatched and dismissed easily. I mean it took 7 years for Jeremy to finally watch it. Lol
Another movie that was equally as insane as The Raid was "The Night Comes for Us" . The title sounds like soft horror but it was more like The Raid on steroids .....I was not ready for The Night Comes for Us .
I went to the theaters to see this movie when it came out. Always thought is was underrated. Was about 10 people in the theater when I went. Glad it finally got the recognition it deserves in my opinion.
