I used to live with a railway line backing onto my house. One night I came home about 4am utterly steaming and noticed a load of network rail workers on the line. I ended up making them all hotdogs and tea until the early hours of the morning. Good times 🤪
Andrew Clark it’s a pleasure! I’ve always wanted to work on the railways but I’m too much of a durr. Guess I’ll have to carry on playing with buses instead!
@@williamg209two oh dear. I thought she was nice and very knowledgeable. Seeing her being buffeted by the crowd as she checked tickets, I thought she was nicer than I would have been!
@@joannamallory2823 Yes she says that people leave their common sense at home - it would be too much to ask that she left her typical gobby American over the top domineering look at me I'm American aren't we all wonderful attitude at home. But of course without that what would Americans be ???
I absolutely identify with the long haired young man... people seem to have lost the ability to use their manners. A simple please and thank you go a long way toward making a working day more pleasant-you feel as though you’ve been both helpful and appreciated. Yet people can’t seem to manage even a smile, a nod or eye contact these days. I like his summation-‘it’s nice to be important, but more important to be nice’.
I love Virgin Train's train managers, never once had a problem with them over at least 500 trips between Preston and Glasgow. They deserve so much more recognition.
Goddammit. All these 'paying customers' thinking they can do whatever the fuck they want and if anything goes wrong it's always your fault. Customer service is a tough job indeed.
Tuppoo94 just saying if you were extremely tired (random example) from a 12 hour flight and you'd been waiting in a crowded hot platform for 3 hours beacuse of a pigeon hitting a train I think someone might have the right to be slightly annoyed
There's no reason to be mad at the station staff just because everything isn't going smoothly. Are the staff members somehow responsible for the train hitting the pigeon? Trust me, it isn't easy for them either, because they know they'll get shat on for no reason.
Karl Johnson I like him too! Especially when he said everyone is in such a rush. I work in retail and I routinely have to deal with stressed out customers so, friend, I feel ya!!
Bastian Mann In Switzerland they run special trains for football matches, that go right to the stadia stations if possible (or if not to the nearest railway station) Keeps the hooligans away from the mainline services and means other people aren't bothered. But doubt that's ever going to happen here in Blighty.
I have utmost respect for railway workers. They deal with all the BS the public throw at them, and through thick and thin keep the trains and services moving to the best of their ability
It's a different perspective. All the US police have guns, and an assault on the police officer is fairly rare. London at 35000 police officer assaults last year is last year alone!!!
"Exactly as usual, bloody chaos"... well if you KNEW this would happen, why not go on an earlier train? Why not go the day before and make it a day trip to London, instead of just watching the game and pissing off home and being all drunk on the train making life miserable for everyone because you lost? Also, why are football fans always balding and slightly overweight?
They complain about the delay, but if they didn't do the checks and their was a fault that killed a few of them, and pernamently injured others, their families would be complaining a lot more! Who are these people? They really have nothing serious to worry about in the UK anymore, this is the problem.
yea man dont fucking tell us not to fuckign swear . Its the fucking internet we can do whatever we fucking want! (Just a joke, it's what my dad does when I tell him not to curse, he says "Don't you tell me not to fucking curse")
I go to football with my dad in London, but it's a shame that people like the drunk people have to put shame upon us because I go too football to enjoy it but always get people like these on the trains!
A friend of mine failed his Glasgow to Edinbugh train at Falkirk High because the rugby hooligans were destroying it. The police turned up and didn't know what to do. There wasn't enough of them apparently. They said to him, 'If you don't get this train out of here, we will arrest you.' He said 'Go on then.' They had to think about that for a minute, then they set about clearing the train.
This series is brilliantly done. I love the poshies who are offended they've let the yobs sit in first class. I wonder what brought the American wedding planner to the UK. The scene where she reminds someone English to use 24h time is quite amusing since we don't use that in the US.
Daniel Pinnock Are our trains"bad"? Depends how you define bad. Some North American railway advocates would be happy to have a system as extensive as the UK's. It's hard to compare though, because we have almost 10X lower population density than the UK. Hardly any European countries are as sparsely populated: so railways don't make as much sense - or at least they didn't - in much of the US because our populations centers are so far apart.. For example, it impressed me when I visited the south coast that trains were running to & from Brighton, to the west & east, all day very frequently. Nowhere in the US are quasi-resort areas (basically) linked by such frequent trains. And in fact very few beach towns have any kind of rail connection. It is changing slowly. Massachusetts has restored a train to Cape Cod for vacationers.
Daniel Pinnock there is not a ton of trains in the USA. Mostly on the East coast.. Amtrak (the us train system) is not bad but not great either.. But the City Trains in Boston (the T), New York (the Metro), And Washington DC are not bad..
Salmagundii...they are not 'poshies'. They are people who have paid a very substantial amount to guarantee the entitlements of being in first class. That is their right and legal position, and British Rail allowing 'yobs', as you call them, to invade that space was entirely wrong. Robert.
All those who are complaining about British railways must travel to India and consume a healthy commute of daily Mumbai suburban railway. It will change your perspective.
"Lazy fu**s" would you rather have them work on the tracks and keep you safe, or have your train doing 125 mph and flip over and a broken rail come flying through the floor? Your choice!
Gamer Deluxe I was returning from a trip to Edinburgh after an incident earlier in the year I got two first class tickets, so we were returning on the day last year of multiple fatalities up at Euston driver change at Preston normal shit but a 2 hour delay! Me fuck yea everyone else, not so happy. I also got to roam the platform for like 20 minutes which was cool ish
The Hunter - Oh yes, because children tell one another they won't get women if they aren't cool enough, with a playlist called "CRINGE" on their accounts. You're a right kick in bollocks with your fake bravado.
Skeleton Toaster Cringe is a real word, nothing wrong with using the word Someone is angry, is this your alt account? From my profile you can tell I am a adult from his you can tell he is a child, I am assuming you're a teenager
Sorry, I don't take burns from a person assuming I was angry for calling him out. REAL adults do NOT need to flaunt off the fact they grew up to others by boasting about their age. I'm an adult. So I will do the polite thing and assist you: why do you call other's children when you have a playlist for cringe videos, the epitome of what white teenage XBOX lovers watch?
People who are inpatient and in a rush, blaming everyone but themselves for delays, should watch programs like this and then they may realize what actually goes in to the day to day running of the network.
@@AndrooUK But they're always unreasonable, expecting everything to work out perfectly or being surprised that it's humans that are behind everything. I think that everyone who complains about delays should work on a Railroad and see how hard it is.
Guy gets caught with a stolen first class ticket with the true owners details on it. Two witnesses saw him take the ticket. Why wasn't the thief arrested?
FPVtrainee Sometimes the delay to the train and its passengers takes precedence. When I was a passenger conductor it was a judgment call. If it was something like a drunk being especially out of line, and abusive to others, I’d call ahead for police. Sometimes a cop would happen to be at a station, then it was convenient to deal with something like a ticket scam.
To be utterly pedantic it is possible for the time to be minutely different in different parts of the train if the train is travelling East-West or West-East. Although Britain works on the same time zone, the actual time by when the sun rises/ sets is different in different parts of the country, so if the train is travelling West-East and it's a particularly long train there is a possibility of it being 1 o'clock in one part of the train and 1 o'clock and a few seconds in another part.
I can sympathise with chris I work as a bus driver and literally 99% of passengers are ignorant and rude and seem to think the bus is automated. It used to really get to me but now I just stay quiet and only speak if I'm spoken to.
Oh yeah, the ones who understand keep quiet. I'm a maritime engineer, I completely understand down time and problems encountered in transportation. The real problem in the UK is we need more capacity, so delays dont cause more knock on effect. They need projects like HS2
We have a saying in America, "If you can't keep up, how can you catch up?" That's all we have in American English, though. The British have the greatest sense of humor in the world! My favorite was a train station employee talking to a teen. He asked, "How old are you, son?" Boy says, "Fourteen." Train man says, reflecting, "I was your age when I was fourteen..."
@@pipeqez911 Indeed, France and Germany has built their High Speed lines way Ahead of time, Since Britain invented the railways, We have become a laughing stock to the rest of the world.
@@carlisroy6666 I agree like it use to be where Villa park was a regular semi final venue, having the FA Cup semis at Wembley takes all the fun and excitement and glamour out of reaching Wembley for a cup final, they only started using Wembley because of the massive tragedy the FA and police caused in 1989, before that happened semi finals was never thought of being played at Wembley, so thanks to the fa and Yorkshire police football fans have to pay twice as much as they would at a regional ground to watch an fa cup semi and also because Wembley is in the London area and the fa is also the greedy cunts want to make more money out of us, so yeah I say bring the semis back to the neutral regional grounds where the real atmosphere of an FA cup semi final is and keep that excitement of reaching Wembley and keep the Wembley for the finals only the way it use to be
Its mind boggling how stupid commuters can be. Unless they work on the railway they have no idea how hard it is to run one. People who complain to me about the closures on the Underground every weekend is ridiculous. Unless they want an old network that forever fails, they should just accept this is what needs to be done. Morons really.
So, ik this is like 10 years old, but the red levers are home/stopping signals, the yellow ones are distant signals, the black levers are points, the blue levers are point facing interlocks, the red levers with a white band is a block locked lever
Wonderful series!! Trains are SO much better in the UK than in Canada....The West Coast trains (Virgin Trains) are great! They are comfortable, fast and the schedules are fantastic. I wish Canada had a rail network like the UK. Can't wait for the rest of the episodes in this series!
You're in luck, VIA Rail is getting brand new Siemens Venture transets with European style interiors this year, as well as new Siemens Chargers that are streamlined with the train sets
Been on the train from london to liverpool on Holiday - Perfectly on time and comfortable, everyone had a seat. It was right after Holiday season in rush hour, was that huge rarity?
First and Virgin trains running 1980's British rail trains repainted purple and charging passengers 10x what the price should be. They're lucky that they have such good staff. The railways should never have been privatised.
People are so entitled in this day and age it's sickening. The chap moaning about the unions has probably never worked a hard day in his life, couldn't be bothered to check the schedule before making plans, and then wants someone else to be responsible for his own poor planning. Poor planning is nobody's fault but your own.
11:06 The way you ppl can talk to cops is shocking. U could never get away with that in America. Fact!! May the the problem is with America?? Citizens shouldn't be "afraid" of cops and should be able to talk in whatever fucking way they want to, without the cops being physically touched or harmed.
Just wow at 7:00 to see an old signal box still working. If it aint broke don't fix it - however the bean counters will be doing their best to chop that mans job, close the box and replace it with an computer switch controller from a central office hundreds of miles away, controlled by an over worked, under paid computer operator. Will that knock a penny off the price of a rail fare? No it won't - it will just go into the shareholders pockets, as per. Aint Progress wonderful?
The UK signalling system was put in place by the Victorians, and it's it's an international joke that we still use such an outdated and inefficient system. We can't fit any more trains on the line because the signalling system chokes the network. Then, when a delay happens, every other train after it is delayed because the signalling system can't cope. I feel bad for the guy's job and all but we can't go around pretending that it works well like this because it simply doesn't. If you want to see an old signal box working, go visit a preserved railway. You'll get to see steam trains too!
@@LordSandwichII hey get out of here with your intelligent facts and logic these guys need to whine about trains regardless of what happens otherwise they will have nothing to do with their life!
Totally agree with you mate well said , some people have no idea as to how much hard work goes in rail network to keep us all safe when we all travel on trains, and it really pisses me off when I hear people moaning about the engineers doing sod all even though they work very hard and under massive pressure and the truth of the matter is if there are no engineers, then the train network would stop altogether and it is a shame that people and think about this.
53:30 if I was there I'd bloody his nose and beat him cold hed be sayin the opposite if he found out that work meant that all those railcars won't be at risk of De railing and him dieing
That stolen ticket saga was complete nonsense. How was it stolen? Why didn't the 'victim' do more about the theft instead of sitting in hi seat? And why on earth was the thief not dealt with properly?
I miss virgin trains, yes avanti kept the staff on the ground (and they’re still as wonderful) but the prices have gone up with less of a service. I travel thus line a lot (Stafford to Euston and back) as a wheelchair user and so know a lot of the staff at both stations who help me on and off the train and they’re wonderful but you used to get a first class return for £25-30 and then the month avanti took over that jumped up to close to £100!
The BBC iPlayer was not playing Episode 4 (West Coast) on my Tablet, so I took a chance and was delighted to find this series uploaded on here - I can watch it under the duvet. :-D
Blea Moor is a long way from the rest of the West Cost Mainline because is not part of the West Coast Mainline, it is part of the Midland Mainline from St Pancras to Glasgow.
surely it's illegal to pack me like sardines. good thing you not ended up on the roof or hanging by the doors and windows, like in 3rd world countries.
The American woman talking about cops doesn't seem to grasp that US police have far too much power Yes, I don't like their 'animal mentality' either, but we can never allow a situation where police have too much power
Centrist american cops r assholes crooks liers & so much more I could call them I know cause I'm in america & really hate the states but can't afford to go nowhere else I'd love to move to England if I had my choice but being poor isn't an option for me so I just live here in this hell hole of a country .
She’s not getting into a political discussion she’s just stating a fact maybe she does actually think that the cops in the us have too much power so why are you assuming that
"The way you people can talk to cops is shocking". Err... The way US cops think they can treat people who haven't done anything wrong is shocking. I heard her say 'thanks love' though so she's integrating. She's really sweet actually. Euston, we have a problem :D.
That's a stupid argument and I am so tired of the UK versus US comparison. The fact that US cops are intransigent does not make it right for people in the UK to disrespect the authorities.
even with all the delays involved I find rail service in the UK and europe far superior that rail service in the states. I did ride the California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville and back to Chicago Problem I find that at one time there were lots of tracks and routes were available but in today's world only some of the larger cities have a train depot ,,so it's getting off the at a nearby city and then many times a bus ride to the destination you want. The ride thru the mountains was spectacular I must say,, Bit slow but very scenic .
you know what i get from this ??? the management should relies just awesome staff they have . And that all the rail staff in these vid's have all mastered the art of stress management .
America isn't like that anymore. Many people blame our police for every hangnail in life. And they don't spare words about it, either. Due to all the political correctness, the officers have to put up with it. I wish cops could give the police dogs some practice....
That woman moaning about "rip off". Come to America. No trains in rural communities no daily service. You are on a lovely train, in a beautiful country. You should sit back, smile and enjoy.
