Orlando would be the best. Sizable stadium, an existence of a Rays fanbase in Orlando, lots of entertainment, sizable airport and lots of hotels in the area.
I've heard the idea of them moving to Hiram Bithorn in Puerto Rico and I really like that. It would be tough on the team but it's an 18,000-person stadium that isn't currently occupied by a baseball team in an area the absolutely loves baseball. If the logistics work, I think it's a good call.
I think they said it wasn't the fact it was made of fabric, but because it should have been replaced 5 years ago was why it failed. It was designed to hold up against a hurricane but for a certain amount of time.
It's actually held up really well considering how little maintenance has been done on it. It should have been replaced like a decade ago it was designed to have a life span of 45 years. The Trop was built in the late '80s. Stu played with the fire of irregular maintenance and got burned.
@@dagamerkingThey learned that from the Twins and Vikings. Metropolitan Stadium was so badly maintained that it rusted out. They said, "Gee, we need a new stadium!"
They should add some temporary bleacher seats to the outfield at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa to raise the capacity to around 15K. Knock down the Trop and if St. Pete fast tracks the money, start building Trop 2. Otherwise the Rays are outta here!
As a Twins fan, the idea was floated around at one point. The problem is that the stadium is in the heart of the downtown metro leaving little space to do a renovation like that. Also if your not familiar with Minnesota weather, the Winter get brutally cold. So the only time to do it is during the summer…….in the middle of the season.
been seeing a lot of talk of the rays going to oakland for the next few seasons, not like the roots will sell the place out so it be a good temp place to go from what i know
They're not going to Oakland. There are plenty of viable temporary homes much closer to St. Pete. It also wouldn't work for the division play. There is a stadium near Disney World and another one not far from the Dome itself. Both seat 10k+.
They can always use the Yankees vacation stadium in the Hamptons. A-Rod apparently also has one in the area, they could use his instead. The Rays owner always needs to save money.
As a long time Ray's fan. This is absolutely heartbreaking. The trop is a magical place for me. Seeing it destroyed is just awful. That being said, where do the Rays play? I could see literally anywhere but Sternbriner feild. Playing in the spring training facility of one of our biggest rivals, would be an absolute slap in the dick. They've already ruled out Montreal and Durham. So Orlando is probably the more interesting choice but i jave my heart set on the Port Charlotte facility.
Wait a minute here, are you telling me that a stadium in hurricane prone area like Tampa does not have insurance, all they should have to pay is the deductible, I’m I missing something here.
Port Charlotte makes the most sense as the Rays use it for Spring Training and won't have any scheduling conflicts with minor league teams. They should just play there until the new stadium is complete. It makes no sense to repair the Trop and get maybe two years out of it.
I just went though Milton, it’s a mess around here at the moment. I think Al Lang is out of the question, as the Rowdies announced they’re playing the next few games at IMG due to stadium damage. The Disney stadium needs a lot of work, as when the Rays played there last year about half of the things worked in the stadium.
Imagine if the Los Angeles Dodgers played at the very tail end of Los Angeles County in the Mojave Desert, about 100 miles north of downtown, which translates to about a 2-3 hour drive depending on traffic. Yes, they are "technically" in Los Angeles, but they're so far removed from the city center that almost no one would bother to go there. The "Tampa Bay" Rays literally do play in the bay area, but they are at the tail end of the main population center, and getting there is basically a one-way choke point.
Alamodome, close enough to do it for at least a year in terms of team travel. Then they really have to think about relocating, I mean is it worth spending millions of dollars to fix the Trop and then 1-2 billion dollars for a new stadium for a team that had the lowest playoff attendance since 1919?
You really need to start another channel about Star Wars and Disney. It sounds like you have something to say to that as many of us feel Disney stepped on Star Wars and proceeded to smear it all over the place, as if it were a roach.
I can see them playing where blue jays did in 2020-2021 and I’d just start demolishing Tropicana field at least get SOME money to help the rays or build some more ways to get in and out of the island they play on
All road games for a while could be an option if they plan to fix the roof and just need to buy some time for a couple months. Definitely not what they'll do if they're not going to fix the Trop.
@DerrickGordon-w1x...the damage may not be covered by insurance. The roof was only supposed to have a shelf life of 25 years and they are ten years past that. The stadium was completed in 1989 with hopes of not
Let me finish that, of getting an expansion team or luring an existing one. Ballparks were built in SF, Chicago and Pittsburgh because of the threat of moving to the then Suncoast Dome. Anyway, St Petersburg, not the Rays, would have to pay for the repairs, so they would be hoping insurance would cover it.
Rays should play at the Oakland Coliseum. I think Oakland would treat them nicely, and it they give people their jobs back temporarily. It's a win-win.
The only way that would work is if you move the Rays to the AL west and redo the schedule. Plus you have to redo the contracts of all the players because Florida has no state income tax and CA has one of the highest state income taxes in the country.
First they have no real fans. If they did they wouldn't wait til they knew they were going to the Post Season to start going to home games. And now they have no home to play games in front of nobody. I also heard the players wives were switching to plastic bags to put over their heads instead of using paper bags during games. Oh and nobodys using the Stadium in Plant City. Cincinnati used it for Spring Training but they left that years ago.
It wasn't designed to be an outdoor facility so there is no drainage for weather. Installing that would doubtless cost much more than just fixing the roof.
bulldoze the Trop and put the new stadium there now let them play where the Marlins play i think they said like like 40 some games would over lap have them play in the Orlando or Disney park for them games tell the new stadium is really everyone wins
I guess you haven’t seen the videos of the damage in the county. And who do you think is going to clean it up? Maybe the businesses that do are trying to help the thousands of people who still can’t go to their homes. Or the small businesses trying to reopen so they don’t lose everything. It will take hundreds of people to clear this out. It’s two weeks ago today that the storm hit. What would you say is the proper amount of time?
