True Story: I witnessed a lorry continue to travel on the inside lane despite passing 4 or 5 lots of overhead signs saying lane closed due to stranded vehicle. I continued in the second lane at reduced speed as the lorry passed me on the inside closed lane. Moments before striking the stranded vehicle the lorry swerved out into my lane. I had left a space... thank god. He clearly didn't see or didn't understand the signs. My opinion is like yours. Its an insane system, and I fear it greatly.

@@RichardVobes I was with the family and we were all taking about the dangers when the first big red cross ❌ sign appeared overhead. At that point I began checking the rear view mirror to see if other drivers hadn't move over. Thats when I first noticed the lorry continuing up the closed lane, so I had ample time to think about keeping safe and keeping an escape route open for him. I've heard many a horror story of those not so lucky. We try to avoid using the smart motorway sections where possible. Thanks for the reply and for such a great channel too. Most enjoyable. 🙂🇬🇧👍👋

What we really need are "smart" people in these high ranking jobs. And that's never going to happen under jobs for the boys systems we have. Leave our motorways alone. And, while we're at it, the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Or at least don't deliberately break it to bring in another corrupt agenda for the few.

I read somewhere that these 'smart motorways' are copied from Holland. There they (apparently) run without any problems. So the UK government copied them. In Holland, the traffic detectors are spaced at 250m. The UK government decided to save money so doubled the distance between the detectors. They then decided to save even more money by doubling the distance again, so basically, the one thing that would make the motorway smart has been omitted from the ones built in the UK & therefore we now have 'death motorways' that the government's PR team (mainstream media) call 'smart motorways'. It's not smart & it's not clever!

We had over two years of disruption and I said at the time, this will end in tears. I have seen so many near misses. The thought that a stationary vehicle will be unsighted for 20 seconds is so crazy that whoever came up with this plan is, in my opinion, criminally negligent. Then there is the cost involved, I wonder who could possibly have benefitted from all this?

Smart motorways are good for the contracting companies that build them - they make loads of lovely money, funded by taxpayers. There has also been mile after mile of motorway coned off for years on end while the same contracting companies gradually replace all the Armco barriers along the central reservation, with those little concrete walls. The government keeps encouraging legal immigration to the country (also allowing illegal immigration to continue - though that is much smaller numbers), but it doesn't want to build any new roads/hospitals/schools, etc. to cater for the increased numbers living here. Twenty or more years ago, when people complained about congestion on the roads, I used to tell them, "Make the most of it while you can - congestion is only going to get worse and worse." They accused me of being negative at the time. Most likely they've all forgotten by now, but those few that do remember can now say, "He was right about that!"

I live near a section of the M3 which is 'smart' motorway. Took something like 3 or 4 years of massively disrupting roadworks to complete and cost hundreds of millions of pounds. The end result is something that's worse and more dangerous than what was there before. I even emailed the highways agency to tell them this, but of course they think it's brilliant and amazing....There's been bad accidents due to broken down vehicles not being able to escape the carriageway, some of which caused deaths, because the planners didn't have the common sense to understand the problems that could occur despite them being blatantly obvious to anyone with a brain cell. The speed limits alter according to traffic volume, weather etc but it's very noticeable they are often out of touch with what's happening in real time. It's a staggeringly badly thought out and expensive project that should be scrapped.

Colas we're the contractors on that stretch.... I was a subcontractor doing the traffic management for a few months at the start and installed the contra flow system from J4a to J3 section of those works... I left that in Jan 2015 and went back to smaller A roads! ...But I started on "Smart Motorways on the M42 & M6/M6(Toll)...they were the better more thought out one's back in 2008/9.... of course later schemes had the cutbacks on safety...I found that out on the M3... I gave up on traffic management in June 2016! Now I tend to drive smaller roads which are far more interesting and scenic! 😁

It may be considered a 'smart' system, but not all motorists are smart with it. It seems to presume that motorists will take notice of the signs in good time, and keep to the speed limits. Weary, zoned out drivers lose awareness, and we all know most seems to ignore the rules of the road. You imagine driving with children in the back and you experience sudden power loss, or a blown tyre. You stop in the lane and not just have to get yourself out, but the children too. It's idiocy.

"Smart" motorways are so obviously a bad idea, it's stunning they were ever thought of. No hard shoulder? You have to wonder what sort of people actually approve such dangerous ideas. It's surely so clear to anyone who has the capacity for intelligent thought that accidents will be caused by a lack of hard shoulder. Technology is nowhere close to ready for such a thing. Even if it was, having a red cross over a lane is hardly going to ensure the broken-down vehicle is safe! It's almost as ludicrous as the fairly new highway code rule of stopping to let pedestrians cross as you come off a roundabout. Are these people actually insane?

We ran our own recovery/rescue/ RTA, operation for twenty years, even with hard shoulders were pot luck as most fatalities were on the hard shoulder, just one of the many incidents we attended one time was a 40ft trailer with wheel bearings shot, so had to repair on the side of the motorway, you always parked your recovery vehicle at full lock to the left and about 50 foot away from the breakdown, so your vehicle in theory takes the first hit before hitting the broken down vehicle, and from the broken down vehicle it was coned of with taller cones to the recovery vehicle and coned to the rear of the recovery vehicle with all the lights flashing, while working on the bearing hub my hubby needed a thread file, he walked up to the recovery vehicle to the near side locker for the tool, got the tool, started to walk to the broken down vehicle to be met with the cones flattened, smart motorways are as stupid as the idiots that thought it was a good idea.

Worked in technology since 1975. Smart motorways terrify me. I’m stationary in the 1st lane with and other passengers high up on the top of the high bank. Suddenly a lorry hits my car at 80 or 90 mph. The debris is going to hit us even though we are at the top of the bank. The rationale is that it gives us an additional lane for a fraction of the cost. That’s the only reason why they exist. COST.

I find it hard to understand why so few are aware of the reason for "Smart" motorways? Other than the obvious one of taxpayer funding infrastructure to enable usage charges to be made, the purpose of the 4th lane is to enable autonomous electrically powered commercial vehicles to be introduced, which will run between a network of low carbon distribution hubs all over the UK. While we are all rushing around like headless chickens, and concerns are directed towards matters like the invaders, things like the smart motorways and LTNs, simply proceed with little or no comment, and there will be nothing we can do about them, as it's already too late.

They are possibly OK in perfect visibility conditions, but even then you need to rely on the driver paying full attention. In the dark, rain, mist or last week snow they are dangerous. Perhaps in these conditions we should all travel in lane 2? I have had some disturbing moments!

It’s a case of, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Only they did and it kill’s people. Absolutely wrong and unforgivable. There’s no way that people designing these new motorways couldn’t see the potential danger.

What happens when a disabled person breaks down in one of these "smart" motorways? It's hard enough for the person to get into & out of a car when on their driveway or carpark let alone the chaos of the motorway. I know of a number of disabled people who avoid "smart" motorways as they're scared of what could happen. Absolute madness.

I'm a disabled person in the US and understand why disabled folks there would avoid driving the smart motorway. Our non-smart Interstate highways are stressful enough as is. And then out here in midwestern farmland there are the 2 lane rural highways which have no shoulder, none, zero, neither hard nor soft, as they wind through the rolling hills.

Commuting on the highway in Britain would be a nightmare. These so-called safety measures put into place are to make you NOT want to travel anywhere. You would be so focused on the things that would make your life suck, like road tolls, infringements from breaking down etc, the pleasure and convenience of owning your own car has disappeared and has turned out to be more trouble than its worth.

There are three types of 'smart motorway' - the kind that Richard refers to is the latest type - 'all-lane running'. The other types still have a 'hard shoulder' - all are designed to reduce congestion by using variable speed limits to reduce bunching. The 'all-lane running' type has a moratorium for 5 years while safety concerns are being assessed. Personally I avoid motorways whenever possible - and always avoid the 'all-lane running type'.

The idea behind them is increased capacity for less £££ than building new lanes. Although increased capacity does not mean that in the long term that journey times will be decreased. Look up induced demand; think of LA with it's 14 lane highways/car parks.

The title"Smart Motorway" when it first began to be built, I felt excited. But very quickly over the months I began to feel alarmed. When realising the restriction as a driver I had if a breakdown or accident occurred which could involve many more to get into trouble at the same time. This design and it's eventual agreement to be implemented onto the roads of England. Must have been agreed by a committee of chimpanzees. For no sane intelligent person aware of road safety would have agreed to this design and it's insanity.

It is utter insanity, Richard and the reason I no longer drive down to my beloved Sussex from the north west. I am terrified of possibly breaking down on a so-called smart motorway, particularly after I read an article in the Daily Mail, by an undercover reporter who worked in the control room and reported, to his own horror, the fact the essential software failed regularly on a daily basis, meaning accidents would happen and nobody would be aware of it. Seeing video footage of the most frightening "near misses" as well, convinced me these motorways are death traps, confirmed by the number of those unfortunate drivers who have been hit and killed, simp!y because their vehicles broke down and they had nowhere to go - a sitting target in other words. I cannot imagine anything worse, a nightmare scenario for any driver. This government was totally mad to sanction smart motorways, hard shoulders must be reinstated for everyone has a right to be safe on our country's roads.

The motorist pays huge amounts into the governments coffers, but receives little in return. These 'smart' motorways are a death trap. It is necessary to legislate that any death caused by these systems should result in charges of corporate manslaughter against the government ministers and companies responsible.

They first tried it on the M42 a few years back. I remember them saying it was for peak time only as that stretch was slow in the rush hour and a max speed of 50mph. Now the M6 around Birmingham is all smart motorway and the M5 too. I am surrounded by them, no real alternative if I want to travel out of the area.

Percentages mean nothing when a car is a mile away traveling at 60mph is only 60 seconds away . No one can get there to help you and give you cover in that time no matter what when all lanes are running percentage will be hi in acedents if percentages must be taken in to account.

Its the accountants and the holders of the government purse strings that introuduced Smart (Dumb) motorways...certainly not the Police or the various motoring organisations and pressure groups. Its widening on the cheap. People have and will die because of these unsafe roads. No more SMs should be built and existing ones should be widened properly to include a continuous hard shoulder
