Crazy thing about this video is that it only covers Roc Marciano’s PRODUCTION. Could do an entirely separate video highlighting his lyricism. He’s really in a class of his own.
I still credit Alc and Madlib for preserving that underground sound. I myself have been making beats since 2005 when everyone wanted to get on the radio. Roc was one of my biggest influences from the U.N. and Flipmode days.

I've been following Roc since he was in flipmode. He definitely kept the lights on in the house of boom bap. He didn't do it alone though... you gotta give guys like Planet Asia, Evidence, Sean P(RIP), DOOM(RIP), ALCHEMIST, MUGGS, Madlib, and too many more to mention credit as well.
Yeh I agree man Sean p and planet Asia need more respect. Fact a lot of people don’t know who muggs is but know cypress is hill is crazy. Never forget muggs taught alchemist how to make beats was the one who introduced him to infamous mobb and mobb deep.
I think all these elements can be traced back to Wu-Tang in early / mid 90s, they just weren't as prominent in 00s. The gritty minimalism of Marcberg reminded me a bit of some stuff from Tical by Method Man which I loved.
@@lighttalefilmz Do you not know what "trace back" means? Wu Tang for sure birthed what we call modern boom bap even before Roc did and I've been a Roc fan since 1998. Roc just made it popular again after all the other NYC rappers sold out or faded away. Now, if you want to talk the drumless neo mafioso movement that made Griselda famous, then yeah that was all Roc and Alchemist.
I think one of the most obvious 90s beats that really uses the same technics as “neo boom bap” is also produced by RZA, the bonus track on OB4CL, “North Star (Jewelz)” Barely touched sample (a lil bit pitched down), simply looped, no drum pattern It was my favorite cut off the album first time I’ve heard it

Agreed, I'm from where Griselda is from, That style of Music just never went Out with us, it's just that Other styles became super Popular,.. Roc, Larry June, 38, and Griselda all gave props to each other, and Griselda never Claimed what the Title says, It's confusing and sounds like Hating on them to Prop up somebody that they also Like and Give credit to. Estee Nack, Divino, RJ Payne, Ransom to an extent, there's a whole host of Guys on the east coast who do this very well. My crew personally were into Mob deep, But the Music that made us, was Wutang, Onyx, Lost Boyz, Cnn, Nas.
It's crazy to me that Roc was considered to have had basically zero buzz at the time Marcberg dropped. When that came out, I had been eagerly waiting for a Roc Marciano album for an entire decade at that point.

Roc Marciano is the one who saved Hip-Hop by bringing back RZA's 90's drumless sound!When I listened to Marcberg i understood that this man will possibly bring the renaissance of the quality and authentic Hip Hop sound and style.His aesthetic is unbeatable.If you like Roc you must also listen to KA.He is low key but he is a legend with this Hempstead grimey sound and lyrical genious rhymescheme.Word.

I work 3 jobs (technically) and have 2 kids at the opposite ends of the "child age range" spectrum.. and a wife to please. Suffice it to say, it can be challenging to find time, let alone inspiration, to make music. @@NavieD some people are critical of the Griselda beats where the drums are often quieter and less danceable, instead going for a darker muddier more mysterious soundtrack-like sound. The beats are not innovative, the difference is interesting atmosphere and texture. The end result less funky also

The part about Grimey sampled beats with synths has been around & were gaining momentum since the 2000's in the Underground. El-P, Necro, Stoupe, as well as producers who worked with Army Of The Pharaohs, etc.
correct…they pioneered the whole ‘raw loop’ style. dilla even said “straight loops…fuck it” and madlib simply called himself ‘the loop digga’. Another indication is both made a calculated turn away from doing more complicated production. They did heavier full studio productions then switched to basic SP-303 loop stuff. This video is giving credit to the wrong people. All those dudes were just trying to make records that sounded like Madlib productions. Of course other folks like Jay Electronica, Alchemist, etc. also leaned into the style. Honestly it’s not really Boom Bap per se…I call it ‘cinematic under-production’. The pioneers of the style I’d say would be folks like Muggs, DJ Shadow, and RZA.

Its crazy How bittersweet Roc getting his flowers is for me. As much as I want the world to hear some of the finest displays for artistry there ever was, I also enjoy putting people on to Roc when they have no clue their world is gonna be opened up to a new life
I first heard of Roc Marci when "Petestrumentals" dropped in 2001 and he was rapping with his crew (the UN) on two tracks. He laid down the last verse on the last track (called Cake) and i knew nothing about this dude except that shit was ill as fuck and insanely effortless sounding. That alone let me know he was on another level, in that Wu-Tang level. And lo and behold he is making shit better than eveybody else and gettin the well earned props
Boom Bap never went away. What Roc Marciano AND Ka (who also needs to be mentioned!) revolutionized was sparsity and economy while still being complex. The style of Beat never went away - you just weren't listening to good rap music.

Roc isnt responsible for the “modern day boom dap”, he pioneered the loop style of production as a rapper/producer. I believe that title should go to The Alchemist. “Return Of The Mac” was before “Marcberg”.

the "loop" style was prob pioneered by Madlib,and he was prob influenced by dilla...id say before alchemist roc on the other hand had his own thing going on in a similar time frame hard to tell who influenced who

Please do a video on Paul C. McKasty, he's the guy that Large Professor credits as inventing chopping in the mid-80s. There is a great article about him called "Return to the World as a Thought" by Dave Tompkins that interviews a lot of legends talking about Paul C's impact (he was sadly murdered back in 1989). He did production for Eric B & Rakim, Ultramagnetic MCs, Organized Konfusion, Queen Latifah, Biz Markie, etc.

Navie, love your videos and have always loved hip-hop and sampling. You do the best job at breaking down beats and recreating them for non-producers to understand. You have an extensive hip-hop knowledge that is uncanny. This was an awesome topic and you made a great video. It would be really awesome to see a video on Atmosphere and some of their samples and songs. Ant is one of my favorite producers and his sampling and sounds are really intricate. When you brought up the part about modern boom bap using unnatural synths, it immediately made me think about the song "Delicate" by Atmosphere. There is some pretty heavy synth and it is a really amazingly produced song. Ant and Slug have known how to stay relevant and creative with their music over the years while staying true to hip-hop and evolving. It would be awesome to see a breakdown on some of their songs (also MF DOOM, but I'm sure you already know that). Thank you so much for these videos. You are extremely knowledgeable and I really enjoy the content you put out.
Naive salute on your homage to Roc Marci. You have to add DJ Premier into this. He was/is the king of the boom bap sound as well. Hell he even did an album with KRS One in 1993 Return Of The Boom Bap. Appreciate what you do for the music production community keep it going. ✌🏾

You have what is know as "Today’s modern boom bap" Throw a Roc, West, Conway, Rome Streets, Flee Lord vocal over his sample chop and you wouldn’t even know whether it was made in 93 or 2023. @@NavieD DJ Premier is not retired, he's still making music - for modern boom bap artists. In this sense, he certainly still fits into this, since his body of work spans both old-school boom bap, right up into more modern stuff. There are a lot of tremendous UK artists and producers also keeping this alive, for example check out some groups like Contact Play, Four Owls, and Leaf Dog in particular. The Four Owls blew up quite massively into the UK, and became one of the first underground UKHH groups to get a collab with DJ Premier himself, on the song "Think Twice" which was produced back in 2015. There's also another dude called Ocean Wisdom who's from a small coastal town called Brighton, and he also blew up in the UK, eventually doing a track with Method Man called 'Ting Dun". All that being said though, not trying to split hairs or anything. Big fan of your videos and production tips, and tbh Pimpstrumentals was always one of my favourite beat tapes of his. You should do a video on the French producer Onra and his "Chinoiseries" albums, some of those tracks are incredible.

@@NeekRusher there are many faces on the Mt Rushmore of "boom bap", but personally DJ Premier is probably not even in my top 3 favourite producers, even the term boom-bap is kinda annoying because it refers to the golden age of hip hop during the 90s, and music and hip hop in general have evolved so much since then. Sometimes the power of music is bigger than the labels we use to define it, it can lose value the more you try to over emphasize one particular era over another. Dilla, Madlib, Flying Lotus are all household names who pushed old school and modern music in way more exciting directions than Dj Premier. A lot of people forget that you don't need rappers to make good hip hop. One producer I have been listening to a lot and find hella inspiring is an artist called Spectacular Diagnostics.
Great video. One thing i have learned is never use Serato Sample for drums, it smears the transients and any crack or punch the sample has is lost, especially when you drift from the original tempo of the sample and definitely when you use Serato Sample's pitch, so be careful, it get mooshy real quick. Try it against the original audio, you'll hear it.
Respect to Roc for carrying the torch for boom bap while everyone jumped on the money-making machine of the cookie cutter trap beat factory, but calling him "the REAL inventor" of modern boom bap is hyperbolic. There were hundreds, if not thousands, of "boom Bap" holdouts during the industry-wide bandwagon-hopping to cookie cutter trap beats. People who were boom bap holdouts and released boom bap were dismissed by many as "old heads" or accused of being stuck on an "outdated" sound. There isn't any "inventor" of modern boom bap, there was just always us who carried the existing torch.
Thugs Prayer Pt.2 off Reloaded is the first point on steroids! He switches between loops from that sample and seamlessly flows between the beat transitions. Great video man, I am a huge fan of Roc Marci and very happy to see this content!
I’ve been a fan since flipmode and the U.N., it’s great to see Roc getting his flowers. Have to mention Rza and Alchemist’s influences on the sound. Elements of early Wu and tracks like The Realest from Mobb Deep (alc produced) alongside the Return of the Mack mixtape were low key pivotal.

Digging one layer deeper there is Ka, he came with a lot of stuff Marciano doing as well including sample-centered approach and slow and deliberate flow.
I first heard Roc Marciano on 'Modern Day Revelations' off of Bronson/Alchemist 2012 Mixtape Rare Chandeliers. His verse is dripping with steez, i had never heard anything like it. He quickly became my favorite rapper, and ive been bumping him ever since. Thanks for the awesome video!!
Dope video I was just listening to Elephant Man's Bones a few days ago and the 1st time i heard Roc Marciano was on Busta Rhymes Anarchy album in 2000 on "the heist" and he definitely held his own... boom bap is special and still till this day goes so hard s/o Griselda for the resurgence! Peace
Discovered Roc Marciano at a Sean Price show. Underground rap as always flourished. I just vividly remember something about the way he did it bridging the mainstream and underground.
