Today I am discussing the Longsword within D&D and why it is really an Arming Sword. I also discuss and share historical information about both the Arming Sword and the Longsword. I hope you enjoy the video and thank you for watching.

The 'viking sword' I have seen referred to as a 'carolingian sword' and that is the term I use for it. Much better descriptor, incorporating its origin.

I've never heard this distinction between longswords and bastard swords and I have never seen any other sword than Aragorn's that has that lower all-metal grip. Curious if you've seen other examples of this.

The difference as I understand it, is a longsword is meant to be wielded 2 handed, bastard swords approached the length of a longsword approx 35 inches, and were able to be used one handed but had a handle and pommel structure to allow for 2 handed use.

@@zombieninjapitbull3856 I think there is many misunderstandings of what is a Longsword and I don't know if anyone officially has defined what a Longsword truly is. I just provided my understanding of what a Longsword is in my video.

I have seen a few, I just used Aragorn's Sword as an example because it is a pretty famous sword at this point. Another example is the Maltese Knight's Longsword

I would actually make some special rules for the great sword and lump it into a new "great weapons" category, and that if you have less than 16 strength, you get penalties. I would up the damage window from a D12 by also adding a D4, and rename the "great sword" for what it currently is into "two handed sword".

I think there is already rules like that but its based on edition and if I recall it was a 12 or higher instead of 16. Understand an ability score of 10 is average with 12 being above average. A STR score of 16 is pretty much a superhero and it doesn't take a superhero to wield weapons like a Great Axe or Great Sword. I have experience with both weapons btw.

FINALLY some is talking about this bs. It always irked me that DnD was adamant about keeping up this misinformationg. Not like WoC cares.

This is some that goes as far back as the TSR D&D days. Mean yeah WotC could have fixed it years ago, but they also had bigger fish to fry at the time.
