What is the real meaning of philosophy? Is it to make us feel good by reading and hearing? Or is it to make us better by equipping us with the power to do right?
According to the wise minister Vidura, it’s the latter. Much of what he teaches us is a part of Vidur Niti, and it teaches us dharma, ethics, and integrity.

🙏🏽I both read and study philosophy with the aim that my thoughts, words and actions align with the foundation of the values suggested in what I have studied. Reflection on my thoughts, words and actions help me check how well things are going

It's true brother. During my school days and college days, I've seen many Dhritarashtras and Gandharis. I remember the days in my college ( situated in our town, very poor in terms of quality of education, infrastructure and discipline control, many of students are from rural areas, poor family background just like me, my father is a daily wage coolie worker working in a brick kiln ) Many of the students in my college are coming just to have a degree and have no knowledge about the world going. Attracted by the fictional world of cinema, they treat their lives like a cinema, saying education is not important rather the enjoyment we get during college days( not attending class, fighting with staff, fighting among themselves for silly reasons like caste, girls, alcohol etc. Owing to that, police car would visit our college at least once a week. I tried to persuade many of my friends that cinema is not real. You can't succeed in life by taking weapons in hand like Rockey Bhai. Life is different. If you have a good dream, not necessarily confined to education but even beyond, everything like money, girls etc will follow you. Despite this, I could not change even one amongst them. FIRs were made on the names of my friends now. After each fights and skirmishes, our principal would call for a parents meeting. The response, however ,from the side of the parents is very worrying . Hardly five or six come. They too defend their children's action and accusing his friends for those offences committed by their children. They sent their children to works like building construction, brick kiln at an young age under the pretext that children must learn how hard it is to earn money. Though rationale underlying this action seems good, in reality I saw much of friends started losing interest in education, cutting classes for going to works. They say ,there is no use in sitting in the class, if I was there, I will earn 700 to 800 rupees which he can use to pay emi for their costly bikes, Mobile phones, alcohol parties, girl friends. They are not using it for any essential purposes. They make their parents silent by giving them a share from their wage. These parents get satisfied with a share they got. They use it for their purpose to repay the loan the borrowed to build a house or any luxurious furniture. The families of these boys get trapped in the chakravyugā of indebtedness from which they could not come out. After many years, they realize what they thought real in the beginning is just an illusion. But my family is different, my Mom is very determined that she will never send to any menial work. If she has to receive any money from me, that must be my first month salary after becoming an IAS officer. She has never been indifferent about my education and discipline, inspite of her not being a educated woman. I'm proud to say that I'm still receiving slaps from her for every mistakes I do. I never regret. Because it is purely thanks to this , I can manage to be who I am today. My parents taught me one should never borrow money for trivial reasons which exceeds the financial position of the family. I'm proud to say My family has no debt to repay. Because my Mom is one of the best finance ministers I ever saw who managed to fulfill our needs without borrowing, despite our poor background. The money she saved thus far is helping me to continue my preparation. In contrast, the lives of the children whose parents were indifferent are either languishing in jail or in construction works under scorching sun, wasting their most important phase of their lives. So behind the successes of each man or woman lies the teachings and support of parents. Parents must realize the role they need to play in the lives of their children. Because the chances of getting distracted and addicted is many now. They need their guidance. They can't brush under the carpet by saying the children must learn everything themselves to be a good man. Yes there are things that they learn themselves, but still they are children. They must correct if they seem to go in a wrong path, teach them what would be the consequence. This is what our culture is teaching us . This is why we say in Tamil Nadu Matha, Pitha, Guru and Deiyvam( God), God comes last, who actually stand first is parents. They must learn the consequence of over- affection towards children or indifference towards the way they grow ,from the life of Dhritarashtra and Gandhari who lost not one or two but 100 children due to their sheer negligence.

What a lovely comment, brother. I will re-read this many times. Thank you for sharing your story and the noble thoughts of your parents and you. If more people like you become IAS officers, our nation's future is in safe hands, and it won't be long before we return to our glory days. I will keep you in my prayers 🙏🏽

So true. Much of the misery in the world is because of humankind's eagerness to do what is expedient rather than what is morally right. I wish Bhagwad Gita were taught in schools to inculcate moral values in kids early in life, as many modern-day parents have outsourced their kids' upbringing almost entirely to schools. Most cases of crimes, like rash-driving / road-rage (like the recent infamous Pune case) or gender crimes stem from poor values / lack of good values in the kids / youth. Higher crimes reflect the breakdown of social systems, not just violation of laws.

That's a poignant point. But we can't expect Western-styled schools to take the responsibility of teaching our principles. Change must start from home.

@@DailySattvik True. That's why it's very important for Govt of India to amend all laws esp RTE Act to enable Hindu Trusts and institutions to start Gurukul education systems, which can be done more widely if Hindu temples under Govt control are freed too.
