Before leaving Nigeria and the African continent (for a bit), I recorded one last video on the way out. This is why I'm in Africa. 🇳🇬 🇷🇼 🇰🇪 🇺🇬 🇹🇿 #sabbatical #africa
The Sabbatical backstory has finally been unlocked. Over the past year, people from around the world have to started to send me messages about how I inspired them to want to visit Africa. People who have lived there for decades, or who have African wives/husbands told me they’re happy that people are finally seeing what they’ve always known. I never imagined that’s the kind of impact I’d have, and I’m happy to hear it. There's much more to come, we're just getting started. For now, I’m on a short break, and then I’ll be off to complete some side quests in the rest of the world. See you again soon, you already know I can’t sit still for long..
stay safe- thanks for all the content of your life. its been fascinating honestly and reminds me of my 20s... i did a lot of exploring the globe... Again Thank You Tommy and see ya on the next Vid. hugs
Tommy. Nothing but respect for you. You are very lucky to have missed out this passed 3 years here in the states. Keep doing you brother. Keep safe and stay healthy in your travels!
As a Tanzanian, I felt proud when mentioned you had a great time as the first country in Africa to set your feet on. Thank you Tommy for sharing your adventures with us, and wish you all the best in the future. Great Vlogs!!
I just can’t stop watching. I’m sick of the typical travel vloggers Basically vlogging as the same old cookie cutter shit. I love the actual interaction with real people and their culture in their every day way of life. And the effort you put in to learn languages so you can better connect with them. All the respect in the world 🌍
Your "polygamy" video came across my feed (after watching this I'm sure that was totally unintentional, Mr. Media), and I'm glad it did. What a great channel and mission. You've changed my perception of African in about 30 mins and I subscribed right after that first video.
I always say I think one of Tommy s ancestors were Black. Tommy is a good guy. Hope his tube career grows bigger, ND cannot wait to see him in Africa again. Stay safe ND Blessed Tommy
I am just impressed on how u learn the languages so quickly, that's just beautiful. By the way, your last video about the chaotic and corrupt officials at the Lagos airport when u were living has ruffled some feathers here, a lot of news channels has aired that video and investigations is been carried out by the authorities.👍 I love it.
@@SabbaticalTommy Our government know about the Lagos state airport corruption and I will tell you that Lagos is not the only place with a corrupted airport, that is the same way it is in every part of the states in Nigeria but they turned blind because they benefited from the corruption They can delay the flight for them to arrive with a token so they believe if we have a working system there won't be such privileged and that is why they will tell you that anything money can not do never exist.
Is there a video on youtube about the news where sabbatical's video is in? I'd like to see it haha. It's nice that people are able to see the truth from Sabbatical's videos.
Thank you, Tommy. I can't even explain how your videos made me feel. Many creators who come here only show one side of the coin. Some come with their “savior” complex/mentality. You came objectively, with an open mind, and showed all sides of the coin. You came and made yourself at home and the same as everyone you meet. Your interactions and communication were Inspiring and your content is super wholesome. I hope to meet you someday on one of your journeys.

I totally get it! I used to do international sales & I always loved going to Africa. Because of my job involved consulting with factories where I met many regular workers I saw a side of Africa no tourist ever sees. I found some of the friendliest people on the planet who were eager to share their lives & food with this white man. It caused me to fall in love with Africa. Working in Africa certainly wasn’t even close to my best paying territory, but I always looked forward to my next trip back to Africa far more than anywhere else I traveled & worked.
I studied English with this I restarted English after 10 years I am a beginner studying English with asmr. Please come and take a look and support. Wow...hi excuse me
As a college student in Milwaukee some years ago, I ended up working jobs that were in the area that is referred to as the ghetto. Milwaukee has always been a city in which ethnic groups have their own areas. Polish are on the south side along with a small Mexican American community. Irish, French and Italian have their dominant ethnic areas on the lower east side of town, with Jewish persons often on the upper east side. Germans were the dominant ethnicity in farming which was just on the outskirts of the city. Majority of black residents lived in the inner city. Working in a neighborhood that was poor, black, culturally and economically cut off from the other parts of the city, was an eye opening experience. Residents were as nice as they could be to me. Those jobs were always fun because the people were so friendly. Some great memories.
As African who has lived in Europe and visited other African countries ! Your summary about Africa bring joy to my heart ! Because here in Europe most people think Africa is just a jungle I was amazed one day a lady ask me if people wear clothes in Africa!I can’t imagine how those media like BBC CNN has portrayed Africa to the rest of the world ! Making people to think Africa is just a jungle with all the population uncivilized
Having lived outside of the UK for 17 years and raised my family in different jurisdictions, different cultures I fully agree with you. Those people living in the home bubbles just need to experience life outside ! Keep the content flowing Tommy !
I'm a Canadian and about 15 years ago, I married a Colombian woman. As a result, I ended up spending a lot of time in Colombia and learning Spanish. Totally agree that you have to get out of your home bubble and push the boundaries of your comfort zone so you learn and grow. The world is a great place. It pays you back in spades if you open yourself up to it.
Marrying someone from other country can be so beneficioso! I don't have success finding people in my country of origin, so then it would be interesting for me at least to go to another and the locals will look at me different. Maybe in a good way or maybe not. This world is inscrutable.
@@tuforu4 Yes man I know it is a disaster. The difference is that you comment that from your first world country (Maybe France, Canada, or I don't really care which other) so maybe you are used to good or at least normal living conditions, but I was born in ecuador XD so stop crying and girling about the topic and go see the real world.
If my few dollars a month actually help you keep on this path, then I’m delighted to have it taken from my account. I am in awe of the passion and attitude and commitment you show to bringing us raw unfiltered content. We sincerely appreciate you. Please stay safe and continue on! Thank you for everything you do from The bottom of my heart and soul from one traveler to another. Hope=hold on pain ends. Your exploration has been a huge help to so many of us just needing a break from the world around us and the videos you post provide that. I can feel from your demeanor and the goodness of light you spread around the world that you are not one of the few who have had things handed to them. Hard work pays off and real recognizes real. Keep it up bro! Upwards to a million!
@@SabbaticalTommy hey don't assume Africans think like black Africans Americans who whine about slavery we have moved on its annoying when people merge the two together Africa American are spoiled children compared to Africans am damn serious
I felt sad seeing you and Josey on the Moto knowing it may be awhile before you see each other again (assuming you're both wanting to continue a relationship). She seems like a true African Queen and I hope you guys can end up getting married :D
Min 4: "If you can, spend and extended period of time abroad" as an American that has lived abroad for more than 20 years, 100% agree. That is what 90% of Americans need to open their eyes to what life is really about!
It goes for all countries, not just Americans. When people start taking on an identity based on their skin or nationality, ignorance has already won, and peace is lost.
Are you suggesting that our white people skincolor makes us somehow automatically ignorant, and we shouldn't have any national pride!? That sounded more than borderline rasism to me!?
At age 55, I moved to the Philippines and lived there for 12 years with my Filipina wife, until her death on 03/01/18. I returned to to the Philippines in 2019 and stayed about 6 months. I was scheduled to return there on 04/08/20, but the pandemic shut everything down. I'm still waiting to return. All in all, living there changed my perspective on life. Everyone should travel and live outside the U.S. for a few months, perhaps a year. I guarantee, their perspective on life would change.
I serve in the military and seen the best and worst of mankind. Trust me I never take my life for granted. But I also learned to love this country more than I used to as a child.
People have painted Us Africans as savages for a long time...if it's not for Missionaries forcing us to abandon our African ways..we barely meet white people in the villages... Thank you for going in the most remote areas and showing how humble and friendly people are. And I'm fascinated by how many languages you speak.
How do missionaries force you to do anything? I'm in Canada and we have lots of christian Africans moving here and starting evangelical churches so I find that incredibly ironic
@@Girtharmstrong69Missionaries went to Africa together with the colonizers because they considered Africans savages that needed to be "civilized". Haven't you heard of the white man's burden? They enslaved Africans not only physically but spiritually. Religion is an important part of a people's culture and tradition and changing their religion by force was meant to alienate them from their roots and break their spirit. They weren't like the missionaries you see today but were an integral part of colonial armies and imperialism.
Tommy. Your assessment of the situation in the US and the media/social media spewing so much divisiveness is on the money. I’m originally from Kenya, of Indian descent, but married my lovely American wife from Wisconsin and raised a family with her in California over the 35 years, but now more than ever I have the urge to go back to Africa. There’s just something special about the place and the people that’s hard to describe to the average person here in the US. Your videos have been awesome and I look forward to following you in your adventures
@@tuforu4 You are always in the comment section of any video about Africa, spewing nonsense. If you have such a problem with Africa and Africans, why don't you just stop watching these videos. You are beginning to sound like a broken record.
You have received a gift in life. Many. A gift of your wholesomeness. Humility. Acceptance. Need for exploration. A kind soul and particularly, the wanting of sharing all this with the world. You hold no ego and show us without showboating anything. It is what it is. Envious love here from this 58 y/o man living vicariously with you. Much respect.
Dude, you are bang on about social media turning people insane. Calling it an experiment was perfect. Happy for your experience, you seem very at ease and happy about it. Enjoy life my friend. I would love cross paths somewhere on this planet with you one day. All the best.
Keep making these videos Tommy. You’re doing very important work in dispelling the miseducation most westerners receive about Africa. I appreciate how open and humble you are regarding cultures different from your own. I look forward to visiting some of the places you’ve been. I would have never known I would want to visit there if it weren’t for you.
I have to think that a big part of the reason you enjoy yourself in Africa is because of the great energy you bring to the table. You don't judge these people and simply treat them like the decent human beings they are. That kind of energy is sure to be reciprocated.
I'm with you on this journey sabbatical. You're the first vlogger I follow "bumper to bumper". Your candid nature, your openness and realness are unparalleled. Keep being real. Keep showing the many stories of Africa. You have avoided what Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie would call the Single Story. Well done and good luck.
Glad to see “ a White guy” who portrays the African continent as it really is. Not everyone is dying from hunger or war in Africa. Next time you visit Uganda just swing by Burundi before heading to Congo. You’ll love it without a doubt. Please come with Miss Josey we love your collaboration.
Well done Tommy, I'm glad that you decided to go to Africa and find out for yourself how African countries and people are really like. Too bad that people are not living in trees in the jungle and all the children are not sick and dying from malnutrition and all have to walk five miles to get some dirty water. This is what the western media has portrayed about Africa to the world. I'm glad that you got the chance to make these videos and show the world what Africa is really like. I hope more people will watch your videos. God bless you!
Sabbatical makes a great point at 4:10 about spending at least once in your life extended time abroad. Unfortunately too many Americans never venture outside their surrounding states and have thus a narrow viewpoint of the world.
I love this RU-vid show so much! Wishing you (and your friend who is with you a lot) good fortune along your journey, amazing lessons and experiences, and continued safe travels! I watch your videos all the time!
So happy I discovered this channel. I love the way that woman said how African you are . She was totally indifferent to your skin colour and just seen a kindred spirit and a kind soul …. Eagerly awaiting your adventures and thank you 🙏🏼
Without a doubt you are one of the most authentic and genuine travel vloggers I've yet to see😊 I have so much respect for someone who not only visits and brings his tourist dollars but makes an effort to learn the language to better interact with the locals. An inspiration to all you are sir!👍🏼❤
Thanks Tommy, you are truly an African man in white skin. Showing the world the greatness of the African continent and its people. When are you coming back to Kenya, we miss you down here. Keep safe and God bless. Asanti sana Tommy
Been running through a bunch of your videos over the last few days. The best thing for your sanity is doing what your doing. Love getting some back story and insight into yourself. Best wishes in your travels and will be watching.
I find it intersting that all the people you encounter in Africa seem to be about 100000x more happy living than any American you run into randomly on the streets whos trying not to make eye contact with you. Do Africans ever stop smiling?? :D
True, I'm also a white guy from NY state. I also went to Uganda this past year during the pandemic. I had the same mindset as you about wanting to break free from this toxic environment and experience a more visceral life. Uganda is such a special place that it changed my life for the better. The people there have a different vibe, a generally way more positive one than the people in NY that I've met in my life. Just like you said, at least I can walk down the street in Uganda and i have a smile on my face and other people are smiling too. Here in NY it's really not like that at all. It's a rarity to see that here.
Thats the point. Africa seems to be cool place unless you earn money in other country, in rich country. Its not that cool if you are born in Africa or other poor country becouse you dont have that choise where to live in. For example im jealous for americans just becouse you can earn money for visit other countries. Be glad you are born in america.
@@nutka2618, hey I changed my original comment a bit. But anyways I love Uganda and I want to come back soon. You should feel grateful that there are such genuine and friendly people with good morals there in Africa because it's very rare to find that here in america. As for making money to survive there. Maybe start a business of exporting goods to other countries to earn the higher valued currencies of other countries.
@@nutka2618, there are successful people from every country in the world who started off as poor and from a poor country. Of course I'm grateful for what I have, but you should be grateful for what you have too. Wealth is subjective to the interpreter. As a simple outdoorsman, wealth for me is to live a simple life in an area with a good climate and friendly people. New York state is the exact opposite. Unpredictable and generally cold weather and unpredictable and generally cold people.
Tommy, this is the most beautiful video I’ve watched from you! You’re showing the world a truth that they have a really hard time seeing with just words that somebody tells them. You’re showing with your videos, your interactions with people around the world, that we’re truly all brothers and sisters, we all share the blood. This is the reality that people can’t see in America, because of the reasons you mentioned in this video. Thank you! I hope that more Americans and people in all countries watch this.
Unlike some others, you've never come across as privileged or entitled. I think your modern day exploring and sharing how others live day to day in other countries is as educational as it is entertaining. Thanks for being an ambassador for he places you visit whether you intended to do that or not! I don't know if it's better or worse now, but, I 'Escaped from NY decades ago...
Good for you man. I have now watched a few of your videos and they have placed a lot of smiles on my face to see how kind and friendly most of people have been with you.
Brilliant and informative and heart felt. Years ago I worked in Algeria and spent time in both Sidi Bel Abbes and Oran with some weeks into the Sahara and up into the Ajax mountains toward Morocco. Funny but I always thought those places were a bit corrupted by the Mediterranean and European influences. Don't get me wrong they were beautiful with incredible food and scenery that were quite jarring for the American from a small Massachusetts farm town but they were not the Africa I was hoping to see. Perhaps I had the same misconceptions that I had learned about what my time there would be as you describe about your early expectations for your travel in Africa. For me then your videos and narration and simple interaction with the people and the streets and in some cases narrow little places I do not know I could handle, have been eye opening and intriguing. I look forward to your every post and hope to see many more and wish you Godspeed and health as you act as our eyes and ears there. Thank you Tommy. All the best.
Just found this channel. Love your drive to see new things and venture into parts unknown (Bourdain reference...) I envy you. It is an amazing gift you have to share all this with us. Thank you.
Can't wait to see more of your travels in the next couple of months Tommy! I love your channel because it reminds me of the real reasons as to why I enjoy social media and brings me back to the days where it wasn't used and abused as a part of a social experiment. I've never really learned much about Africa so following you throughout your travels has taught me a lot about the continent, the people, and their culture. Thank you!
Hello excuse me god bless you I studied English with this I restarted English after 10 years I am a beginner studying English with asmr. Please come and take a look and support.
Bawoni Tommy! 🥰 Thank you for show casing the true Nigerian spirit through your eyes and your heart. Your story reveals your authenticity. Love it! You abd Josey make a good team. Wish you Happy travels but Mother Africa is waiting for your return.
Nigeria is chaotic. Dusty, loud, crowded, sweltering; big city, or small city, it's the same. You feel the chaos the moment you step off the plane on to the jet bridge at horrid MMIA. But, two weeks or one month or whenever later when you leave, this huge wave of nostalgia overwhelms you, and you can't wait to go back. Home is home.
Hello Sabbatical, I am a big fan from Uganda. Thank you for filming and sharing the true African narrative. Being African makes me proud following your true and honest adventures.
Cool video. Love your channel and they way you provide commentary on each country. Some humour, a lot of respect and just showing the real people and country. I really enjoy each and every vid.
Sabbatical, please write a book. I love hearing/reading your view point. I have to give up to our Kenyan brothers and sisters. Nairobi is developing quite a skyline with an impressive road network. Don't forget Comoros islands, and Madagascar.
I've enjoyed and watched most of your videos.Thank you for making this one too.I have been curious how you started out on this journey .Thank you for taking the time to share :)
Tommy thank you so much for everything. Your videos are the best in Africa because they are more informative. You do what others fail to do, such as dining with the poor and interacting with anyone include making friends fast.
Very profound and inspiring message!! It’s refreshing to see someone who genuinely wants to show the world what life is like in other countries. Would love to smoke with you someday in some remote countryside lol keep it up🔥❤️
This is amazing! I feel so inspired, optimistic and as if I am living vicariously through you from Long Island, NY. I am a traveler who has had my adventures curtailed by covid and just discovered your channel. Will be watching all the previous vids and gaining more momentum to one day make the Africa trip as well. Safe travels, and thanks for your content 🙏
Africa is not just one story (Chimamanda). The more the stories we can collate, the nearer we approach the truth about Africa. Thank you for your story of Africa. It's been entertaining and educative. We wish you well. God keep you and all dear to you.
It’s all about passion. You are passionate about Africa and it gives a direction to your life. Too many never even experience passion in their lives. May you grow this passion as far as you ever dreamed and thank you for taking us onboard.
I've been binging on your videos for the last week or so. Great videos, bud! So far, I only got to visit Kenya, but I will join you in trotting the African continent soon. Maybe we will cross paths. Good luck to you and God Bless!
No doubt, the smiles and constant greetings in Africa catch you off guard as a first timer. Even me growing up in South Africa when I went back to Ethiopia in my early twenties I was a bit surprised
Been extremely enjoying your videos for this past week when I stumbled upon them. You're truly a man who God chose to walk amongst the people of the world. Thanks for showing us everything. It shares much education with us. We get a small taste and feel thru your vids.
Following you from the very first videos. You are living my dream. Please keep on doing these videos and there will be a lot more newcoming subscribers. Peace Tommy from Macedonia!!
Love your videos Tommy, shedding a light on africa. Youve taught me a lot about the continent as a kenyan who haven't been to any other African country. I find it Interesting how fast you learn/ pick up on languages, that a real gift that help you interact better with people.
You did a great job Tom.. Much Respect 🙏 Surprised me on how beautiful Africa is and how different our America is compared to different countries.. can't wait to travel.. So excited for the adventure ahead and enjoying your channel.. God Bless and Salute 🙏💯✊💪
