Rudy Gobert was just named “Most Overrated” by over 100 anonymous NBA Players. He didn’t just win, it wasn’t even close! This is a look at why everyone hates Rudy Gobert so much because it’s been going on for years.
When KD sobs about his mom who raised him as a poor single mother, it’s applauded. But when Rudy cries and gets emotional about the same thing, for some reason everyone makes fun of him.
They just hate him. He's not an American Black. You see this all the time. If you ain't down with Hip Hop, if you ain't into that Thug Life, then you ain't black! He's already a half, and a foreigner, that's already room for hate from the Darker brothers. And he ain't got that bag, which is all that players seem to respect. That's why Kobe is so overrated, because he had the bag. Jokic has all the bag, but he is white. And Gobert is getting paid and awards, which is another thing that pisses off other players. They think that he doesn't deserve it, but the teams obviously think he does deserve it.
@@shorewalland isn't it funny how they dog white people for supposedly being racist but they all constantly rip on each other for being the wrong shade of black?
On 142 players, 81 accepted to give their opinion about the most overrated player. 13,6 % said Rudy Gobert. So 11 players in the league think he is overrated. I think at this point we can all agree no one care about this vote.
It’s weird to me that the NBA players say he’s overrated, and then almost no one shoots well against him. His on-ball defensive shooting percentage is really good.
@@MikeyMike923 Good point. He’s very limited there. And yet no one says a great offensive player is overrated when they can’t play defense and give up way more points in the paint than Rudy can score outside the paint.
I think the biggest reason for him being hated is the same as Giannis where people believe if the were 7 foot and that athletic they could do the same thing. Difference is Giannis is a funny likable guy and it sounds harsh but Gobert just isn’t
People blame everyone but Rudy for the Wolves superb D, but we already know what a Wolves team constructed like they are now but without Rudy is like. Sure, they're trying to win now instead of tank. And, maybe their coach is different, but the heart of their defense is Rudy.
I think they are the only team in the playoffs who can challenge the Denver Nuggets. They have good bigs, and they have defensive players who can defend playoff murray. And yes they have that dog ANT.
@@ResearcherQuian Watching the Celtics doing the same thing than last year... the Playoffs end in the WC semis. And I think Denver has the upper hand (sadly)
@@CorporalthoroughbredvibezOK, but Gobert does care so that's a none issue but moving on. No, Gobert is not the biggest offensive threat in the world that's for sure. But, back to your point. Plenty of players were only good on one side of the ball. Whether it's Kyrie on offense, or Ben Wallace and Dennis Rodman on defense. Why is it OK for them to only be skilled on one side of the court, but not Rudy?
So, players mostly hate him because of his salary and DPOY awards? But those were given to him, what was he supposed to do, refuse it? "No thanks, XY player deserves this more." Even the COVID thing was unfortunate, he was trying to be funny and it backfired badly. Many other players would do same or similar thing
I’m a Utah fan and I can assure you that we still love him. Outside of basketball, he’s awesome and sweet. Minnesota fans can hopefully relate to this now.
@@makansate2393 Twolves front office is genius to pull off what media players and fans called worst trade ever. Shows that the GMs in league( who set price for his salary and trade value) are better at their jobs than the media. You guys are lucky and so are fans who will see Ant and Rudy dominate their ends of the floor in playoffs. I'm rooting for wolves in the west.
Rudy is competitive. Even in regular season. They can hate him for many diff reason but the failure of that jazz team doesnt fall to rudy alone. Unlike now he have better wing defender, A guy as competetive as him or much more. The wolves will continue to succeed because of the addition of conley and rudy.
I think if Rudy also leaned into the "villain" role the fans would love him. Talk that ish back tell players they make a fraction of what he makes. It would be a lot of fun😂
It's not like it's his fault for being overpaid lmao. Honestly, half of the hate is just jealousy, the rest might be the covid incident. For Draymond, it's clearly jealousy.
Highest defensive rating in the NBA. A lot of people doesnt know what that means but that pretty much justifies his pay. There are a lot more players who are overpaid like Bradley Beal
GMs in league aren't dumb like players. That's why he commanded one of the biggest trade packages in history. He is worth every penny according to front offices in the league. His stats show it. His impact on teams show it. Anyone calling him overrated is either dumb, ignorant or jealous. Couldn't agree more. Well said crab.
@@rcbarnson6488 That's right. His Resume of ALL-NBA and Defensive Player of the year and All NBA Defense speaks to that already. People are wowed so much with flash and scoring. The Wolves are the #1 ranked defense right now and Gobert is a big part of it
Always loved Rudy, and thought he was misunderstood. But who cares about the outside world, it's basketball, so do you're job. And Rudy does like a true European.
@@MeemXDXD5actually if you go back to that LA clippers game, he literally missed both free throws 😂 and was dog shit that game so yes westbrick is the right term
@@okay8458 oh ok. so Lebrick is also an appropriate term, cause LeBron shoots a pathetic 73% from the FT line to Russ's 77%. and Tony parker shoots 75% for his career, and Tim Duncan shoots 69%.
I am willing to bet you can take everyone that say's Gobert is over rated, put a video together of them driving into the paint, seeing Rudy and turning back around and backing the ball out. And not just once, but multiple times. These things never show up on a stat sheet but just standing in the paint and getting teams to reset their offense on 70% of the plays is Domination.
I watched Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell from when they both started in the NBA with the Jazz here in SLC. Gobert has always been humble, hard working, and loyal to Utah and the fans unlike any player in recent history. I saw him first day at Jazz scrimmage and he looked like he was on Ice Skates…look at him now. People might like Don but he acted liked a little B* when things got tough. Rudy is the real deal self confident type of dude. And players don’t like him bc he doesn’t try to be liked by them 💯 Glad to see him winning in Minnesota 🐺
Us Jazz fans love Rudy. Dude was a huge part of the community here. So happy to see how he went from this no name to Hall of famer. Really hope he can win a chip
Regardless of all the hate, he's still one of the greatest defenders ever and a future HOFer. I dont really think all the criticism matters at this point in his career🤷🏾♂️
The only defender on the Utah Jazz was attacked because he was the only defensive player on the Utah Jazz. None of the other players got any heat for being complete trash at Defense.
I remember watching that series where they were attacking Mitchell on every possession because his "defense" was pretty much just standing in place as they ran on by him. Seriously, what is Gobert supposed to do? Guard 5 players at once?
If people actually watched Rudy they would understand his value. I watched him for years in Utah and am glad to see that Minnesota fans show him the love he deserves. Never understood the amount of hate thrown his way.
Took him just a year and a half to bring a bad defensive to the top. The whole Wolves are better defenders than last year because of him. He's a floor defensive general bit just KD acknowledeged it.
Gobert is top ten for sure for doing the dirty work! Gobert really heckled for being a jazz player that got paid way more then people expected for his position. That rubs people the wrong way. However, can’t argue that his presence alone messes with the other teams normal play.
Thanks for this video. Rudy's situation helped me to realize why I may not be as liked as I could be on my team: I'm too much of a tryhard, and when I pretend to not be trying, I come across as condescending. Random I know, but thanks anyway. Edit: Don't get me wrong, I'm liked by pretty much everyone on my team, just could be more friendly and a nicer person.
Jazz fan here. I watch a lot of NBA but the team I watch the most is the Jazz. I'm a Rudy fan even now while he's not on the team anymore. When it came time to blow the team up, I would have been content if we kept Rudy, and traded off the others. If Cavs fans are happy with Mitchell, hey good for you guys but I was happy to see him go. I watched the games, I know people hate on Rudy, but the poor play was more on Mitchell and the rest of the team. Way to much was put on Rudy, all the while giving him zero respect. I was never a Timberwolves fan but would LOVE to see them win a ring with Rudy on the team.
GMs around the league would pay him more if they could. Only one player can change your defense from bottom 10 to top 5. His name is Rudy. His advanced stats are just absurd.
@@jdunnatl in advanced statistics it shows team defense rating when player is on the floor vs off and for last 8 years Rudy's team was ranked 20-30 when off and 1-5 when on for 6 of those years. There is a little uptick on D with Wemby defensive fg% goes from 57% to 55% but no where near the difference that Rudy made this year and has in the past despite him leading in blocks Wemby should not win DPOY over Rudy this year. I agree that Wemby can pass Rudy on D. Hell I think he can pass MJ as greatest 2way player of all time and be the goat with the biggest hurdle I see being injury. The crowns still to be earned though.
Lol the COVID thing was so dumb. Some ppl were actually pretending that NBA wouldn't of shut down if it wasn't for Gobert... It was gonna happen regardless.
@@shorewall I remember in late January, 2020, when it was obvious what you wrote, shorewall, that it was gonna spread everywhere in a few weeks. And then in late February, Trump said that it would be gone by Easter. I laughed. I thought how mentally special anyone is who believed the Prez when he said that. How can world leaders get away with saying something so clearly and plainly bunk.
A 4-time DPOY is apparently more overrated than Shaqtin MVP Jordan Poole, Mr. "I poke bears", and Mr. Triple Single. And somehow Westbrick and Draymond are nowhere to be seen in the poll.
Yeah he's abrasive in a lot of ways, but he really does have a heart of gold. When he shows up for a charity event, he stays through the whole thing interacting with the kids such events are for instead of just making an appearance, getting some pictures taken and jetting. Can't believe the punch wasn't brought up, especially because he criticized Draymon.
I love AM Hoops, but respectfully he NEEDS to take more accountability sometimes. Last year around this time there was a video detailing the exact opposite from the things he says in this video. Its obviously fine to comment on a players career at different times and I also understand that he needs to play up the dramatic element of "look how ridiculous his hate is they think he's a glorified role player", but literally last year he's talking about how gobert is a 40 million dollar worse and older version of Jarret Allen, and how the T Wolves made the "Worst Trade in NBA history", and are therefore in the "Worst situation", and then now he's made the exact same video about the hawks. You can tell a lot of effort is put into these videos, but without some proper accountability and consideration of nuance and his old points the videos just feel so flip floppy, sensationalized, and lacking substance. Again I have nothing but love, just hoping to give some constructive criticism.
Finally, someone else besides moi has a memory for history. I totally remember AM Hoops' video about "The Worst Trade in NBA History." I thought at the time that trading so much for Rudy was perhaps a tiny bit too much, but not a ton too much. Looks like Minnesota brass knew what they were doing after all.
@@doobeedoo2 I can't remember exact outlets or individuals, but I do remember a lot of noise against Gobert, against Minnesota over this trade. It took a while for KAT and Gobert and Naz to gel, for their chemistry to happen. Slight chance they get a chip this year.
Great video. As a Frenchmen I often get ambigus feelings about Gobert, yet I will always defend him because the guy always shows up for the national team and gives it all.
@@ChewyChicken589he didnt just touch it. He coughed on the mic and laughed about it IN MY CITY. The NBA and OKC grinded to halt literally the day after. Stop subsidizing a millionaire athlete's idiocy with your own
Before Lebron entered the NBA, that would be a travel 100% of the time... but they had to change the rules for traveling to avoid calling Lebron for 5 travels every game. That one rule change has really ruined the NBA. Having good footwork used to be a necessary skill to be successful...... now it's a joke!
@@sonofyhwh_ I've watched 10 times as much basketball as you and know 100 times more about basketball than you! Lebron is a traveler... Kobe was not! This isn't about "a move," it's about what constitutes traveling and what doesn't. Kobe's footwork was elite... Lebron's is a f*cking disgrace to the game of basketball!
@@cnelsonlv99 I'm not arguing about Bron's traveling I don't like it, I think it's a disservice to the league, but people most of the time misconstrued legal moves to travel and my point was the move he showed in the video wasn't a travel.
@@sonofyhwh_ Right... by the new rules, it's legal. Hard to even tell what's illegal anymore. Watched Austin reeves spin on his pivot foot making like 3 moves in a 360 spin, only to take another step and lay it in... no call!
@Alex-ov7bm Yes, AD should be that good all the time, but he is wildly inconsistent. Also, it's not asking who is better, just overrated. If AD was as consistent as joker the lakers would be top 4 team. Rudy does exactly what the twolves expect of him. It's why they are the only team I think who could beat the Nuggets (including the celtics) in a best of 7. I literally have a 10k bet on them winning the chip.
Poole has been absolutely trashed throughout the season bro was the most hated I don't know how someone would consider him overrated because he has no positive ratings 😂
Wow AM Hoops giving some love to a Timberwolf without suggesting that he will leave.....cough cough Ant....I do remember you hating on the Gobert trade though...Hows that trade looking now?
@@kentstallard6512 Actually MN Lakers won several titles. But yes Wolves haven't won one. Lots of teams haven't. Sure Gobert is overpaid but not sure he is over rated. Since nobody doesn't likes him, how can he be over rated? He's a 3 time defensive champ. Soon to be 4. Only a few players ever can say that. Real problem is most fans don't know the importance of a player like Gobert. They only care about offensive players as it's more flashy. So what makes him so over rated?
@@kentstallard6512 So is that opinion. If you even watch him play you know that is a bs statement. He alters the game a ton. Only player that's is close to his defensive capabilities is AD and now Wemby. Maybe Chet too but right now Wemby and Chet aren't on his level.
As a french guy, and a wolves fan, I can't say that I have always been supportive of Rudy. First year in Minny, I was like "Yeah... no, worst trade ever". He is a great guy, you hear him talking in his interviews in french, he is so much more likeable, because there's no delay for understanding a question or finding the right word. But you can see that at times he struggles finding words in english. So people get him wrong. Then I saw him this year, I actually watched 95% of games which I did not last year, and I saw the impact, I saw the energy, the desire to be the best in his field, which is defense. Yes sometimes he makes atrocious plays, but he makes up for it ten times in D. And now, he's one of my favourite players to watch, but only because this year's wolves made defense sexy. And in thirty years, I'm sure when people look back, they will put Rudy's name amongst the best defensive players of all time.
He's one on the best defenders in the league, but there is only so much you can do against scorers like KD. Good offense wins most of the time. If he is surrounded by the right pieces his team will be top in the league. Just watch Hoops Venue video about how they defended the Suns in game 1
@@kentstallard6512 have you been watching the game vs the suns. bro has been going iso at times vs beal booker and kd and hes like doing decently against them as a center lol
@@kentstallard6512 Nobody would pay him 200M if he was only a shot blocker. He is an elite inside the arc defender in a spaced out era. He made the Jazz a top defense and did the same with the Wolves. He was exposed when the Clippers used a small line up, but they used the small line up because he was too strong in the paint. He is not one of my favourite player by far, but he has his value.
I really appreciate that you pronounce Victor Wembanyama's name correctly. It proves that you took the time to find out, to learn, all out of respect and ethics.
the real problem of that Utah team was Mitchell, that dude can score, so everyone just ignores the fact that he is not good on the defensive end. and rudy is usually the one cleaning it up for him. and man, 1 guy defending at least 2 guys is no easy job
If Draymond doesn't like you then you're doing something right. He's a man child who can't control his emotions and takes it out on other dude's ballbags. Has no place to criticize someone else being rightfully emotional.
The problem is strictly money, Shaq turned on him the day he signed his contract saying "that's more than I made my whole career" If Gobert made $4M/yrevwrybody would describe him as selfless, doesn't need the limelight, just wants to win. But he makes $41M/yr & people don't think he deserves it
Sometimes I think about what it might be like to make more money than most entire companies, what it could do to a person to achieve at that level, to have all these people pushing you and counting on you and watching everything you do. Some stars seem alright with it, and others handle it less gracefully. I have no idea how I'd have held up under these conditions. Probably not well.
I respect Gobert. His teams are always good, no one is taking spida over him now. I mean, scoring guards are a dime a dozen, defensive anchors are like Embiid, Giannis, AD in a good day, maybe Book Lopez, Draymond. There are a lot of great wing defenders, but interior defenders are rare and therefore the value for them should be higher. People were saying that Ayton was going to be a stopper, or Ben, but apparently defense is harder than it looks.
Ant is rehabilitating both Rudy and KAT, I love it! What if Ant would have been there instead of Wiggins, when they traded for Jimmy Buckets.... Also, Rudy was kinda fire from the free throw line, against Phoenix.
Probably because he got all those dpoy trophies while real versatile guys like Draymond have one. Oh and zero post game and what seems like a refusal to work on one.
Im tired of people who criticize Gobert for being overrated being labeled as haters. We can agree to disagree without insulting each other. Im a Mavs fan and watched every game in that 1st round series in 2022. The Mavs ran small ball lineups with Finney Smith and Maxi Kleber at the 5 spot and Gobert couldn’t score over them in the low post. He had trouble defending in space, and he struggled guarding Kleber when the Mavs ran 5 out offense. The Clippers did the same exact thing in the 2021 playoffs by running small ball lineups with Batum and Morris at the 5 and he got exposed on both ends. Sure he’s a good shot blocker, but theres more to defense than just blocking shots. And the NBA players didn’t vote him overrated because they fear him, they voted him overrated because they see he’s flawed and is not that good. If NBA players that play against him every night are telling you he’s overrated, you should believe them
Gobert is not a great defender. He's a shot blocker. And other than alley oops he has zero offensive game. Amazing that he's never bothered to develop post moves. He's a liability outside the paint and coaches scheme to take advantage of him.
As a Jazz fan this is true gobert can’t score I remember being suuuuper angry about that in the Jazz mavs series. That’s not what he’s saying tho he’s saying gobert is unfairly hated by the players because of other things. I do think gobert needs a post game and some humility tho
I’ll give Gobert credit, I’m happy that he’s in a better situation now. He’s surrounded by players who actually puts in effort on defense, unlike his Jazz days when players would half ass on that end, now that takes away more pressure off of Rudy to try and cover everybody’s defensive mistakes.
I watch all your videos. Claiming however that 4:50 is a travel is an outrageous lack of basketball knowledge. That's 100% legit move that many stars do. Travel occurs the moment you *LAND* your foot, not pick it up. There are many videos on that topic, so I won't link any not to do free ads. Regardless, you're a reporter, my favorite one out there, so that can be forgiven. Love your content br0!
Rudy is Mark Eaton. Mark Eaton was a 2x DPOY, made an all star team, and had a nice career with the Jazz. It was a very solid and productive career. Rudy has a solid and productive career. That's it.
