Sikhs and Gurkhas were loyal to the "British Raj" during the 1857 War of Independence, which is why the British lionized them and later gave them "Martial race" status. It was the Gurkhas of the Gurkha regiment who did the shooting during the "Jalianwala bhag" massacre. (along with part of the Baloch regiment - now in pakistan army). The CDS does not command the Chiefs of the three armed forces. He is only "Chairman" to the Chief of Staff Committee, beside heading the Dept of Military Affairs. Also since Lt Generals are eligible to be appointed to the post, he is clearly not senior to the Generals of the three forces.

Good to see that you are checking Sir Sam Manekshaw's media interviews available on RU-vid. Now you are well equipped with information to compare the movie and Vicky Kaushal's acting and the movie. From addressing the Pakistan infiltration into Kashmir (genocide of Hindus in Kashmir) during a crucial time to handling West Pakistan (now Pakistan) atrocities (read massacre of Bengali intellectuals, social activists, and students from both Hindu and Muslim communities) in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), stand against China against all atrocities ... Manekshaw is a legend who led operations that changed history.

I think it was because of the British english influence that was still in the country after they left (coz hardly anyone had any exposure to US english back then)! You might notice that generation didn't use to have any "fillers" when they were speaking. They used to speak in sentences and most importantly - to the point, unlike today where we care more about the flow and don't want to take a break in between the sentences.

There are some quotes of him which are still taught in the army to the young officers. He once showed a minister his place. The minister said " hey you can you draw the curtains there?" Or something like this to one of the soldiers. Sam Bahadur was there and he said"Minister, he has a name and a rank in the Indian army... address him by his rank" So the minister obliged... He always stood for his soldiers and never bowed down to any pressures internal or external.

In the movie trailer Vicky's character address PM Indira as "Madam" which Sam never did... instead he used "Prime Minister" which you can hear in this interview.... so once after a bureaucrat's complaint to Cabinet Secretary pointing it to be disrespecful, the Cabinet Secretary mentioned this in Sam’s presence at a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries, he got a reply that left him speechless. Sam said and I quote “I hope you know that the term "Madam" is reserved for certain ladies who are in charge of houses of ill fame.” (Savage😮)

5:41 I'd heard that Bangladeshis were enraged and demanded that Pakistani military officers be put on trial in front of the people. The Pakistani military was afraid that the people of Bangladesh would kill their forces if they were left behind. In order to spare their lives, Sam Manekshaw accepted them as prisoners of war. Because of this decision, the victims and their families of Bangladesh genocide believe that India protected the war criminals.

Yeah but look at these shameless Bangladeshis now! Their local population is still ready to support Pakistan over India anyday. They now believe it was solely Bangladeshis who liberated Bangladesh and India did nothing that big there😂

His memory was so sharp. He could remember the name of his Sentry, Harka Bahadur Gurung, from 1947. I don't even remember what I did last week.

Thank you for sharing this... Our army has been following these values and classic discipline ... We had been groomed under apt leadership.. So unfortunate we have started behaving like the rest of the neighbours just because we pretend to be superior nation... We have lost the cause of "वासुदेव कुटुम्बकम"

@@MohitKumar-nj8ms To clean dirt, wear gloves or use machines like any civilized and developed country would do. In other words, law should be the guideline, law enforcement should be the tool not the politician or brainless mob. We have seen enough countries trying such shortcuts and finally ending up in "dirt"

20:01 American soldiers get PTSD after just 2 years of deployment, meanwhile Indian soldiers and generals are relatively peaceful ✌️

Between 100 and 140 Indan army soldiers have died ever year of “suicide/self-inclicted injuries”. This, when there is No war being fought for the last 20 years.

@odomangulati7079 What is the total number of soldiers across the army? And how significant is this number in that term. Mind you, the percentage is very much higher in Western countries.

Majority of American soldiers who fought in Vietnam were young men 18-19 year old who didnt even want to be there in the first place

@spilltea4241 No one here is talking about Vietnam. Look at the original comment. "2 years of deployment." They still get deployed around the world and have the highest number of Homelessness and drug affected ones

Sam Sir was extremely dedicated to his profession and demonstrated a strong passion towards it. Throughout his career, he consistently encountered challenging circumstances that posed considerable difficulties for India. However, he possessed a remarkable capability to navigate these situations and achieve favorable outcomes for the country. Although I am not aligned with the Congress party, I firmly believe that if Indira Gandhi were alive and running for elections, I would wholeheartedly support her cause without any hesitation. She undoubtedly embodied true leadership and held the title of a genuine Queen.

The irony is that India released their 93,000 POW (prisoners of war) but failed to get 54 Indians whose fate is not known. The reality is that their case was taken up half-heartedly. The government does not only ignore their sacrifices but also the tears of their families who still hope that they will return alive one day.

Not many might have gathered but he spoke with the steward in Nepali - like all Gorkha officers do till this day. Also, regarding the incident with Indira Gandhi and him likely to take over - the politicians were so scared of a similar event in the future - that gradually laws were enacted to ensure that no Army Chief became so powerful.
