Great lesson Jens! I finally dug into diminished scale material and have been combining it with these types of pivot arpeggios with enclosures on dominants - end on the 7th, (or 3rd or 5th) enclose the 13th (half step down) as a start of new arpeggio. Today's lesson provides so much for connecting and utilizing raw material - which is one of the hardest things to learn. Love it.

@jameserenberger3425
@jameserenberger3425 Год назад
Hey Jens! Thank you for all of the awesome content. Is there a bebop scale that you would recommend over an altered dominant chord? I assume the altered scale with a passing tone in the Maj 7th position would work. I am curious how you would approach this.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen Год назад
No, I don't really use Bebop scales, I always found it more powerful to just use chromatic notes as a melodic tool and not some sort of system.
@jameserenberger3425
@jameserenberger3425 Год назад
@@JensLarsen That makes sense. I know the system traditionally is used to hit specific chord tones on the strong beats of 1/8th note lines. Alt chords are kind of the exception because you hit notes that are implied to not necessarily be in the chord voicing used. The Altered Scale would hit all of the "outside" notes, but the strong beats would vary since it's got an odd number of tones. That probably is the best choice anyway, but it's fun to ask great players how they think about this stuff. Thank you again! 😀

lately , i really love the progression I6 / #IVdim7/ imin7/ iidim7 descending through all the inversions of drop2 or drop3 becuase you get this nice melodic contour which travels through each obe of the inversions and you can start building that out into a bunch of things. do you enjoy taking progressions through descending inversions to create long winding descending melodic contours?
@johnjacquard863
@johnjacquard863 2 года назад
ex. C6 / F#dim7/ Dmin7/ Bdim7 that descends through each one of the C6 inversions with a descending melodic contour attached to the drop2 or drop 3 or drop2&4 its just a fun way to come up with long winding melodies.

I have to disagree on Not using an approach tone on the down beat. It really has it's own sound. As long as it resolves to a traget right away, it is very effective IMO. You have to carefull or it can sound incorrect. Just another way o acomplising tension and resolve.

I’m sorry whatever terrible shit that happened to you went down - you didn’t deserve it - but you’re responsible for fixing the damage it did to you.
