Squanto was Christian by the time the Pilgrims met him and there is a good chance he knew all the good breaks. His people had died the year prior from a common native disease. The Pilgrims were starving and actually found what was left of his settlement and the remaining food. Squanto came along totally by chance before planning to leave the area entirely and explained he had been enslaved by English explorers and taken to England where he became a Christian before returning. He then taught the Pilgrims how to farm using native crops like corn. The Pilgrims unsurprisingly saw it as divine intervention because the chances of all that happening are fucking bonkers. Thanksgiving refers to a 3 day festival of food, games, hunting and trade between natives and those Pilgrims that took place at the end of the harvest. And the Pilgrims were basically just the equivalent to Amish. They wanted to be left alone and live very pious lives. Contrary to Jon's story they were not left alone until they got to North America. The English treated them very badly and the Dutch weren't much better. Maybe they deserved some of it but the only historical evidence for that was preaching a more Puritan form of life. It's not like they were violent or something.
