The Real 'Wolf of Wall Street'?

In the mid 1990s, Leonardo DiCaprio was the king of the world. The baby-faced movie star was about to play the leading role in Titanic, and he spent some of his time hanging with Dana Giacchetto, a former investment banker and member of the new wave group Breakfast in Bed, at Giacchetto's penthouse loft on Broadway and Cortlandt in Manhattan. The two friends owned matching cockatoos named Angel and Caesar and hosted lavish parties for the most powerful people in 90s film, fashion, and finance: Michael Stipe, Andrew Cuomo, Kate Moss, Winona Ryder, Harmony Korine, and Alanis Morissette, among other celebrities.
In between doing the things that happen at late-night parties, including spraying vintage champagne everywhere, some guests made million-dollar late-night deals-at least that's what Giacchetto claims. His high life crashed down on him when he was arrested in 2000 and pleaded guilty to fraud under the Investment Advisers Act. After that, most of his clients left him, and the court sentenced him to a maximum of 57 months in prison for misappropriating approximately $9 million. Thanks to good behavior, time already served in prison, and his willingness to enter rehab, he was released early, but his life has never been the same.
Giacchetto's downfall began in 1988, when his mother, Alma, loaned him almost $200,000 so he could found the Cassandra Group. Giacchetto already worked as an account executive at Boston Safe Deposit & Trust, and he used his bona fides to persuade friends in new wave and punk bands to put money in an investment group for cool, arty people.
Thanks to his business skills and rock cred, Giacchetto started working with Sub Pop Records, the iconic indie label that was simultaneously broke and famous for releasing Nirvana's first album, Bleach. Soon after, Giacchetto worked as the money manager for all of Sub Pop's acts, as well as for the Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morissette, Phish, Victoria Williams, Q-Tip, R.E.M., and many of their agents and managers.
Giacchetto went to prison for stealing $9 million from a number of these clients, including Phish, who lost more than $1 million, according to the New York Times. The Securities and Exchange Commission had discovered improprieties in Cassandra's bookkeeping dating back to September 1997. (Giacchetto had used a version of the classic "asset-kiting scheme," in which one asset is borrowed to cover the disappearance of another.)
Prosecutors alleged that Giacchetto's scheme involved improperly tapping into the accounts of the Cassandra Group's clients and ordering checks from financial services firm Brown & Co. He was able to cash them at the US Trust even though some checks were made out to celebrities like Ben Stiller.
"I was someone who was extraordinarily successful, beyond his wildest dreams, and I flew too close to the sun and, you know, got really burned," he told us when we met him in New York this summer.
After telling us he didn't have too much time to talk because he had to meet with his lawyer and the FBI, he insisted on his innocence and maintained that he had been accused and convicted because Hollywood insiders were trying to keep him out of the elite, high-powered, celebrity life of Hollywood that he saw as a kind of Mount Olympus.
"I think that there is some truth in the idea that there is this vapid vacuum still that is Hollywood-sometimes because it's a business built on artifice, fantasy," he said. "It doesn't mean that it's not legitimate. It just means that, contextually, you have to sort of put it into place, and I think people do get envious of that."
At every meeting, Giacchetto promised us he would bring photos from his years with DiCaprio. We didn't believe him, but at our last interview, Giacchetto brought a Travelpro expandable luggage bag full of hundreds of photos, like these pictures of DiCaprio partying. As Giacchetto flipped through the pictures, he reminded us of a father showing photos of his children, not because Giacchetto liked bragging about his 90s debauchery but because these celebrities were once his friends. When he went to jail, many of them abandoned him.
This hasn't stopped Giacchetto from doing business with the rich and famous, of course. Along with his phone-app gig with Pavitt, he's repping a new line of luxury food items that will enable you to eat lobster thermidor straight from the can.

pendejo298 you guys ain't getting it. Your critical thinking skills are lacking, or god forbid non-existant. Leonardo Decaprii IS the guy who got this movie rolling, it was his idea/baby. Furthermore Leonardo PERSONALLY knew, and hanged around with this guy. Putting 2 and 2 together should lead anyone with a bit of critical thinking skills to realise that this dude WAS the inspiration for this movie , and likely was not directly chosen as the protagonist due to possuble future legal complications.... obviously the wolf of Wall Street is about Belfort but I feel like this dude is pretty much saying Leo lived that life with him and put his persona and real life experiences into how Leo played the character of Belfort since Leo didn't personally know Belfort but knew this guy he used him as inspiration look at how dude presents himself and his facial expressions n how he amps his voice up to express certain things then watch how Leo acts in the movie. I think he was character inspiration not the inspiration for the film itself. But that's my take on it and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Listening to someone's lifestyle and experiencing their lifestyle are two different things. He didn't know Belfort on a personal level like he knew this dude. He lived that life with this dude he didn't do that with Belfort spending 100 hours talking to Belfort ain't shit compared to spending months with this dude living that same type of shit. Obviously Belfort played a role in how he acted in the movie but who are you to say this guy didn't? Leo was able to use real life experiences to portray a character. Do you see what I'm tryna say?

People like Dana Giacchetto are especially dangerous. Correct me if I'm wrong (which I probably am) but I see the business world as just one big game with two types of players; those who play the game and those who make the game. So what do you do if you're a game maker and you feel like the game is holding you back? Easy, you change the rules and reshuffle the deck. Figuratively speaking, this is what Dana Giacchetto did. He created his own interpretation of the rules and then played by them as if it was legit. He turned it all into a wash by claiming that the issue was caused by a third party. A lot of you guys are talking about his body language, twitching, etc. That shit is not even relevant because how else did you picture an ex-addict (benefit of the doubt)? The interesting thing is how calm and calculated he is whilst talking about stuff that is so controversial and so personal. Sure, you might say "well, he is lying through his teeth", but didn't most of you at least consider the fact that he might be high as a kite? Pulling off a poker face like that isn't something you do naturally, it's something you learn to do with experience. At the end of the day Dana Giacchetto is not some small-time crook that got too greedy. He's a businessman in the world's most competitive trade that managed to play a lot of smart people like a fucking fiddle until he ran out of tunes to play. Dana Giacchetto is clever, not strong. If he can play his cards well without cheating then he might regain his former respect, but I sure as fuck wouldn't be surprised if he fucked everyone in the ass once again. The US is the Mecca of Capitalism and where there's a free market to take advantage of, someone is getting corrupted.

Nobody here is painting this guy as a hero. This is just a factual depiction of what actually happened, as told by the guy that actually lived it. Even the reporter is scrutinizing his questionable behavior of the past as well as the present. Vice isn't praising this guy's actions in the video, they're just capturing what's taking place, and asking questions. That is what real news is, in case you didn't know. Are you watching this video through a tiny pinhole, with selective hearing?
@Kelo60

Rogsterius Stealing from people that it dosnt hurt is funny to me. People with tons of money and are big enough suckers to fall into this kind of thing deserve there money to be stolen. If I had the ability to steal 10 mil I would do it. Then I would give it to a place who could use it like a orphanage, Homeless shelter, Food bank and so on. Fuck rich people who never give back.
@lawrencearcelo
@lawrencearcelo 9 лет назад

I think this could be the reason why DiCaprio wanted so badly to do Wolf of Wall Street and waited patiently 7 years to do it. He lived this type of excesses in life before and he knew he could nail it on a film. Jordan's Belfort story is much much heavier and intriguing. Also, JB is a different man, living a new life right now.. but this guy is lost and still dreaming to hang out with the famous people, still dreaming to go back to all that..
