Thomas Merton, O.C.S.O. was an American Catholic writer and mystic. A Trappist monk of the Abbey of Gethsemani, Kentucky, he was a poet, social activist, and student of comparative religion.
James Finley left home at the age of 18 for the Abbey of Gethsemani in Trappist, Kentucky, where Thomas Merton lived as a contemplative. Finley stayed at the monastery for six years, living the traditional Trappist life of prayer, silence, and solitude. Here Finley describes life with Thomas Merton, and how he pointed the way to an enlightened state of awareness open to us all.

We none of us know when we need this in our lives

Very beautiful. Especially Merton's passage at 7:45. Thank God we cannot mess with this "Point of Nothingness", for we would surely mess it up. Yet, this "Point of Nothingness" is absolute fullness, that source which allows us to be, from which emanates all that is pure, pristine, positive, life-giving, life-enhancing. We are afraid to be dependent, perhaps proud, perhaps they are the same thing, fear and pride. We have all been hurt and I know I have hurt people, yet the closer we can all come to this Point of Nothingness, the more fulfiled, the more real and the more beautiful all our lives can be. Dare to care. Dare to let go. And if you lose, you haven't lost everything, you can never lose the most precious part. Who we really are. And when you really realise this, you won't be afraid anymore, you won't be proud anymore, you will finally be free. Confident to speak your truth even if that would risk your social "power", "prestige", "money". These are all nice things to have but not if you have to compromise your intimate contact with the source to get more of them. "You cannot serve God and Mammon." "What profits a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?" "Seek and you will find; ask and you will receive; knock and it will be opened."

it sounds strange but amazing that chiseling away our own ego reveals God and nothing else. Atman is Brahman.

Thank you for this comment which helps us to see the profundity that James Finley brings through. His videos are the most profound thing I have ever found on RU-vid. There is so much sincerity and depth of realisation of the mystery of Life itself ! And the loving energy that is the source of all. The only other writer I have found of this level of profundity is John Todd Ferrier. His books speak of the Love at the heart of the universe which flows out in electic streams to every soul and all life , creating light and joy and happiness in those who respond to that love, and themselves give love, the Energy of love in everything they do. ‘ Love ye one another ‘ !

This is common knowledge and within what Buddhists have known all along. And Buddhists know more beyond this. Cheers.

contemplative "self transformation?" Or contemplative transformation of the "self"? I believe that's an important distinction. Pax.
