I have an elec car for almost 5 yrs, 2016 Nissan Leaf....love it, it only goes 86 miles per charge, but it works great for us, and we use it 98% of the time, we will sell our other car and trade this elec car in for a newer one that goes farther soon....we have a charging station in our garage.....we also have solar set up for the house so we not only don’t pay for gas since elec car, we don’t pay for electric since home powered with solar....👍🏻😜🚙 thx for video....

Hey there, thanks for all this cool information. Love the progressive lifestyle that you are living!! Can I ask if you live in an urban, suburban, or rural area? I ask this because we live in a remote area in the 🇨🇦 wilderness... and there are no businesses or contractors who have such expertise with solar, renewable energy, EV, etc... but hopefully one day. Thanks for your comment above, I enjoyed reading it.

My father was skeptical about hybrid and electric vehicles but opened up to the idea of owning one after I started driving a hybrid vehicle myself. He ended up purchasing this BMW model and he never wants to go back! He's very happy with his switch and I'm very happy that he made a move towards a more sustainable mode of transport.

EV drivers, please use the audible function for pedestrians whenever you’re on roads where people may cross them (all 30, 40, many 50mph). People with a visual impairment use their hearing as their primary means of crossing the road, and are at high risk of misassessing and being injured by a vehicle if it’s a silent EV. Contrary to popular belief, even those with guide dogs rather than canes are at high risk. It is the human and not the dog who chooses when to cross the road. A dog would not understand human traffic flow and the danger of cars unless we hit them! That would be a) abhorrent for their welfare and b) mean they became so scared of cars they wouldn’t be able to use pedestrian crossings or walk alongside traffic. The dogs have rudimentary understanding through training that they should refuse to move if a car is driving at them, but actually most dogs also associate the sound of the car rather than the visual even when they do get this correct. Please please help the world be safer for everyone, not just those of us fortunate the to be able bodied! Thank you. I train guide dogs, and am confident that all the above is true from several years of experience.

This video topic is great to get specific experience information out to different audiences. Sometimes when searching a topic, it’s possible to end up with stats, links, pricing, or enthusiasts but not quite the everyday perspective. Ideally the adjustment would be smooth, but knowing what to expect is half the battle. 🙏🏽

One thing I would say, is at higher speeds, definitely don't open the window rather than using the air con. The drag you will get as a result of op[ening the window will have a much worse effect on your range than having the air con on.

My biggest concern is driving to work & back home. Just one way is a 45 min drive & I don't have 30+ mins to just sit at a charge station. It only takes 10 mins to fill my car up at the gas station. This is basically the 1 thing stopping me from getting an electric car.

Thanks great video. We have a Nissan Leaf (Gen 1) we have had it for 2yrs and love it. We bought it second hand as couldn't afford new. Interesting to see the new cars are not that much difference. As it's older it had a smaller battery so only does about 80miles but I use it so much. We have a second car for longer trips but I work freelance and (until the pandemic) would drive to a few jobs a day in my Leaf and it was fab the other car hardly moved. In Scotland it is free at the moment but some councils are starting charge fees as of the new year. Like £1 connection charge and Xp per KWh for what you use. We mainly charge at thine at the moment but I always loved it if I could charge at a job get for free!

Excellent video! Great to hear about the experience from someone who isn't a typical "car person". I'm a bit confused at how you've never driven an automatic car before though. It's hard to even get a manual car in the USA (unless it's a very old model) and most people have only ever driven automatics. Is it not like this in your area? And cruise control? That's been a standard feature in most cars made since the 1990s... How old are your cars??? I drive a 1972 Plymouth so I'm not knocking it, just genuinely curious.
@petapendlebury9024
@petapendlebury9024 3 года назад
Here in the UK automatic cars are still quite unusual - we have to learn on a manual too. Generally here people move to automatics if they have mobility issues or do a lot of long distance driving with their work. There are more automatic cars in the higher price bracket though. I'm not sure but I think the average American car may be a lot more powerful and therefore more likely to be automatics? My car is a1600cc and considered to be mid range. Most of my friends drive 1000cc or 1200cc cars because the lower the cc here the cheaper the road tax! Hope that helps? 🙂

Thanks for this! I have been looking for electric cars in my area. About how long does it take to fully charge a vehicle with the rapid charger?
@cauthoncrazy
@cauthoncrazy 3 года назад
Hi Nikki you typically only rapid charge for 20 to 30 minutes. It is ideal on long trips to get you from 0 - 80% or 20 - 80%. At 80% charged, the car almost always starts to taper and rather than twiddle your thumbs, you go on to the next rapid charger on your trip. It can take 5 to 10 miles to drive at highway speeds on top of your travel distance if you are using the ac or heater just FYI.

The batteries are the issue. In alot of cases you buy the car but have to rent the batteries so the reeeally cheap to run sustainable car ends up costing twice as much a year as you would normally pay in insurance with added rental agreements. When I looked into a leaf I was told you have to take the agreement out before you purchase the car second hand as well... (I lack trust or understanding around this tbh) Which makes me sad. I really hope there are accessable ways for everyone to be able to consider the switch in the years to come. For now I'm just chuffed my economical diesel car (63mpg) has increased in value by £500 since the gov announced the change to manufacturing in 2030. I'm taking it as a year of free driving and a small win for 2020

Sustainably speaking would it be a better choice to get a new electric car or buy a petrol second hand one? I've only had 2 cars until now and only got the second one because my first one got destroyed on an accident. @Simon-dm8zv
@Simon-dm8zv 3 года назад
@@kalpic11 An electric car is always more sustainable, although it may take a year or 3 to compensate for the battery production emissions. Even when you compare a new EV to a used petrol or diesel vehicle it still makes sense emission-wise. Purchase cost is obviously a different question.
@Tore_Lund
@Tore_Lund 3 года назад
I agree, my last two cars were 18 and 20 years old when I bought them! The reason is that newer cars have fatter C-pillars, which hindres rear visibility and they are less economic, both in fuel and repairs. 64 US MPG year round average in a 1998 Fiat Seicento. If I in comparison had bought an EV, using 250Wh/mile, I would emit 10% more CO2/ mile (at 400g CO2/kWh from the grid) and I would never recoup the footprint from its manufacture. My latest car 20 yld, is an EV. It is on its 3'rd battery pack, which I also bought used from a crashed BMW i3. Because it is an old EV, originally made for lead-acid batteries, it is much lighter with a smaller motor, it uses only 160Wh/mile, so I'm am actually 60% cleaner than driving my former car, and it has already recovered its manufacturing emissions.

The Americans use 55mph,is that because they've worked out its the most economical speed to drive at? Which begs the question, why is the UK NOT using this speed on motorway. Most likely the crazy drivers who don't follow road laws would simply ignore. How economical is it to depart from your route to find a charging point? What do you do for the LONG TIMES spent charging.

Not necessarily relevant for many owners because fuelling habits are very different. With a combustion engined car you drive it until it needs to be refuelled. With an electric car go get home plug it in and the batteries recharge to full while you sleep. Comparisons of range are only relevant if you regularly do long distances and need to recharge away from home.
