THE REALITY of Elderly Hamster Care... 

When I say that hamsters that seem like they will pass very shortly, enrichment isn't important, I mean that making them comfortable is the main thing!! Of course still include some enrichment, but it's not as important as their comfort❤

I got very tensed when i seen my hamster having skin like a old person 🥺 its been 2 years now Hope i give him a very long life And hope he loved been with me and my mom 😭

Thanks for this! Last week I got my first adult hamster rather than a baby. He's 1 and its an adjustment having to accept that his old man days are just around the corner. Another thing I learned about elders is not letting the youthful-looking ones fool you. They still need downgrades as they may be hiding their struggles. Learned the hard way when I kept my baby-like 2yr old in a normal cage and she passed suddenly with bad athritis that could've been lessened had I gave her an age-appropriate set up. I feel so bad she had all that climbing to do because I took her high energy for granted.

great video ...will certainly help many hamster owners whose pets are middle aged [ over 1yr ].i have a couple tips for elderly care ..keep the cage set up the same as this will help enormously especially if hamster going blind . i also suggest putting food in a bowl as well as scatter feeding incase hamster is too infim to seek out food , extra hides and water bowls / bottles can help a lot too .

I totally agree with you and thank you for the video as this is an important topic. My hamster had a neurological issues at the end of his life and it gradually worsened. He had bad control of his balance at the end and kept falling very easily so I had to make his cage on the same level and take out a lot of stuff as he always fell no matter what he was walking on. Everything had to be soft and not sharp in case he would fall on it. Many would think it was a very boring and simple cage and not okay in comparison to my other ones but you have to think of your hamster conditions and physical abilities. Having stuff to climb on or stuff you have to reach is not the most important for an elderly or a sick hammy, that's not taking the best care as they could get even more hurt by it. I ofc made sure he was happy and content the last month or two of his life but the cage was simple to soothe his needs.

I don't know why people started hating on Nico the Syrian Hamster's encloser, because they are clearly a very caring, well educated hamster owner. They should have just privately messaged them saying that they recommended adding more sprays and enrichment instead of making a post saying they didn't deserve followers. Great informative video, hopefully it can help people when their hamster gets elderly. A couple of my top tips to add is you may need to replace the wheel for a wider one and/or an enclosed one if you don't already use one like that so less chance of hamster falling out or if their legs are splaying out due to arthritis. Also, I know you know this as I mention it to anyone that will listen to me, submerge things like cork logs/whicker tunnels etc into the bedding so it is flat and level with the bedding, that way your hamster can still walk across the top of it but can still also walk inside it.

IAM so heartbreaking today this morning my spirit was hardly moving and was not using his legs I was told during the night he must of fallen he couldn't walk he broke his spine 😢had to put him down I keep crying

This is very helpful! I totally agree that enrichment isn’t the most important thing in the late weeks or months of a hamster’s life, and that comfort is. My robo hamster Timmy recently passed but lived to the ripe age of 2.5 years! I made sure he was comfortable in his final days and kept his setup simple. Keep up with the great work! ❤

Great video! 😍I definitely agree with you about the cage setup needing to be different for elderly hamsters. They become fragile and clumsy and walking becomes a struggle sometimes. Having many levels and things they have to climb over would be tiring and dangerous because they could fall and get hurt easily. When they are in their last days, their life should be as comfortable and as easy as possible, same as with humans. Food and water should be easily available and difficult boredom breakers are an overkill, something simple, like a very basic forage toy would be fine. If they are really struggling I would even reintroduce a food dish so they have to invest minimal effort and I can keep track of how much they are eating. Cage setup and care should be always adjusted for the individual hamster in question.

It’s hard to accept but he’s nearing the end of his life, and I’m pampering my baby as much as I can. This video is very helpful, tysm! (p.s. My ham is 1,7 years old now. And she aged so fast now😢she barely walks, sleeps the whole day/night. Lost bit fur, wet tail. She does eat and drink

This is such an important video. I understand the reason you made it but another good point is to show people that hamster care is for life, not just when they look like a cute baby. It is important for anybody with a hamster to take old age into account. How sad people can be so cruel. Poor person on Instagram to get such mean comments. I am not on Instagram due to such horrible people. Lovely to see Bruno and Cloud are still with you. They have the most amazing care. ❤❤
