The Reality of Transracial Adoption | Kim Van Brunt | TEDxZumbroRiver

Kim Van Brunt, a white adoptive parent of transracial children, inspires and communicates through a blend of speech and poetry. She tells stories of her children, once held in high regard and reverence by the people of their Ugandan village, where color is not an issue, and what they now experience as Americans.
Kim Van Brunt is a poet and nonfiction writer. Becoming a transracial adoptive parent opened her eyes in a much more personal way to the depth of her own white privilege. Now, she uses her story and her creative work to help others recognize systems of inequality and their power to affect change for the common good. Kim works as a communications strategist in Rochester, where she and her husband are raising four children - two homegrown and two adopted from Uganda in Eastern Africa.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

If you consider international adoption please make sure to get informed really well, be critical to the promises made to you and try to make sure the rights of the birth parents and children are recognised and respected. The past has shown multiple times that international adoption can be a tragedy and is not always helping children in needs as it seems to be at the first glance.

The same is true for having biological children, which, I fear, can no longer be considered ethical in the current state of environmental and political collapse. We need to make new kinships, not new babies.

I can see why some people view this as being slightly offensive but in reality I think it was beautiful and even just the attempt of trying to understand is an absolutely wonderful thing as long as she never truly believes she understands because only personal Experience could Grant empathy in place of sympathy.

Lol at the people troubled by her tone. She obviously is narrating her story in a poetic style. If you read the description you will also read that she's a poet and story teller.

@@ktrigg2 Nice. Now can you prove that instead of "observing" bunch of tweets you've seen? Like in US. Crime rate has decline to overall lows. Unemployment is lowest in decades. Quality of life is up. Oh cause there are a few more women in movies or something that's causing destruction I guess.
@ktrigg2

idontlikeyouyo single motherhood rate is at all time highs, male suicide is skyrocketing and open border policies largely correlated with women voters and politicians are erasing the culture and social fabric of the United States which has seen polls that indicate we are as a close to a second civil war as we’ve ever been. Not to mention the invasion allowed by cowards like merkel of Europe by backward third world savages driven by a depraved and domineering theology. Boys are falling behind in school as an increasingly feminized culture and curriculum takes over leading to the mass drugging of young boys deemed “disruptive” or increasingly and disconcertingly labeled as “toxic masculinity.” The insouciance of loading boys with pills faster than pharmaceutical companies can release them under minimal testing periods by an increasingly untrustworthy FDA will have mass effects seen for generations. Hope your feelz keep you comfortable as Rome falls around you.

The family that adopted my daughter is white. Looking at Their profile they didn’t ask for a specific race, they just wanted a child after so many failed attempts. That was 18 years ago, I moved To the same state as them when my daughter was five, I lived with them for a month. My daughter knows Who her tummy mommy is and she also communicates with her siblings. I have a video on my RU-vid channel about my story 🙂

This is Kim's only white daughter, speaking from my friends account. If we raise him right, he will stick up for himself. He won't need anyone to speak up for him. But, he is a 7 year old. Tell me Lenore, have you ever gone through adoption twice, as my family has?

I just look at it this way. The people who have adopted interracially and have managed to make the situation work pretty well were never invited to give TEDtalks. That's reserved for ones who can depict it as a minefield, and preferably a minefield that manages to assuage white egos.

This made me cry! I am white but as my best friend and I walked the halls of school, she was the one judged, not me. She was the one who endured whispered curses, that I was too privileged to hear. After over 12 years, she is a strong, beautiful woman, who still has to struggle because of her color, not because of who she is. I also want to see a world where, no matter the color of their skin, or who is standing by them, the world doesn’t judge, but Sees other people for WHO they are as an individuals! Beautiful speech!

I hear talk of the need to raise your transracial kids to be "in touch with their own culture". Um, what? Culture is not an inherent trait at all; your "culture" is whatever culture you are raised in, regardless of your melanin. This obsession with race will kill us all.
