The thing about organs in those songs is you can't always tell that there is an organ in those songs, untill you remove it, then you just feel something is off...

That's the beauty of them. Same with synths, for example the octave synth buried in the mix on the chorus of All The Small Things. When they're deep in the mix, they add so much to the production. It's another reason why a lot of late 00s/early 10s is lame af, they have loads of obvious synths at the top of the mix where the guitars should be, and it sounds shit.

Screeching Weasel’s “My Brain Hurts” is one of the first examples that comes to mind for a pop punk band using these organs/synthesizers.

Interesting. I know it's in All The Small Things, but I'd never noticed it in Dammit... yet it's so obvious when you point it out. There's something about the organ's timbre that makes it sit nice with guitars.

I guess that makes sense, It would sound more bland-ish if pop-punk were without it, but idk, I don't know of an example of pop-punk without it, but it's really crazy as someone who wants to make music to find out that music had shit so miniscule, yet so impactful to the track

@@SugarpillProd I'm not sure, its maby because it was so overdone at the time. I loved in the early 00s but 90% of the bands I would never think to put on today, even for pure nostalgia. Similar to rap-metal, it just seems really unique to its place and time. I would never think to listen to bands like bowling for soup, it just wouldn't cross my mind. "Aged terribly " was probably a bit harsh, I dont believe it to be timeless is more accurate 👍🏻

@@Rydonittelo That's fair I guess. Though I'd say that can really be argued for most genres that have a huge amount of popularity around a certain time period. At least from a sound perspective, I think most of those records still hold up. They definitely don't have as many dated elements like the turntable scratches in Nu-Metal, or the Wub Wubs from Dubstep.

@@SugarpillProd What is a real shame is there doesn't seem to be any "genres " anymore. Growing up you had all these distinct groups who focus on a specific genre, like the goth kids, skateboarding kids, hiphop kids , even later in my early 20s you had indie bands like snow patrol, Franz Ferdinand , white stripes, killers that were all part of the same movement but now it's all just one homogenous "pop music " were everyone does everything. My cousin is 19 and she didn't even really understand the concept of what I meant by genre 😁

@@Rydonittelo Honestly that's probably for the best 😂 Most of the time it just ends up with people arguing over what is and isn't "Punk", "Metal", "Emo", etc. I think genres are helpful for finding similar sounds to what you already enjoy, but beyond that I just think they tend to lead to a lot of gatekeeping or elitism.

If it was just a wall of distorted guitars it would sound like ass. You need something with a different and more tame tonal quality to help ground the melody and sounds better and an organ is the perfect instrument that glues the sounds together sonically
