Ive been trying this today and the previews sound great but as soon as I process the whole song and download the tracks quality becomes unusable. It's got this weird lo fi and volume changes over each word. Any ideas anyone?
I'm a six string guitar player. I wanted to know some of the differences between bass and standard 6 string guitar. Honestly, I can barely make out bass notes. When the other instruments are added, it just looks like you're moving your hand to the beat.
this is one of the reason why i really like my band now - we are always trying to listen to each other and come out with the best "how does it sound all together" solution . i'm also very blessed that i have 3 very talented and smart musicians playing with me so that helps 🤣
I've never seen this as a disadvantage. With a mild ammount of compression (3:1 or something) the difference is much less drastic, and the different note tambres are very useful for making basslines more interesting. 5 string basses also solve a lot of this by allowing you to access the 0 octave of far more notes, allowing for a consistent low end across all key changes.
It's not really a disadvantage, just something to be aware of if you're going for a certain sound - as described in the video. Yes compression helps, that's why almost any rock mix will slam the bass guitar with it, but you can also do things to help with this at the recording stage too. It's like a domino effect, the more thought you put into your recordings at the source, the better your end product will sound.
So as I learned from plenty of your great vids the punk-rock orchestra lineup should have: 2-3 guitarists 2 bassists or more 1 keyboardist 1 organist Drummers(?) not yet clear for me, maybe 2 Vocalists maybe 2 ... Brass section ?
@@Swashbuckler9x Thanks! It's just some random chords I was playing in a previous video. So I just use it as a "score" now. I do get a lot of people ask though. Feels like a bit of a letdown when I say it isn't really anything haha.
@@SugarpillProd It's definitely something man. Care to release it as is? Even if you turn it into something else later. I'd love to let it breathe around while I'm driving. Definitely akin to Rats!Rats!Rats by Deftones.
Your example of a root bass note shows a D chord in the chart, then indicates the bottom E string at the 5th fret........which is an A, and therefore the 5th of the chord. Not the root !!!!
Today is probably the day I'm finding out that laying out drums BEFORE the bass is the normal thing.to do🤣 I have been creating my own bass grooves and then my producer/drummer uses that as a basis
Either way works honestly. I normally go guitar - drums - bass - if I'm writing everything from scratch. If it's tracks someone else has sent me to work on, then I like to spend more time on the drums and bass, and then move on to everything else once that's locked in.
A friend of mine met E Street Band bass player Gary Tallent at a bar when they were in town. My friend said he really liked the bass playing on Springsteen's second album and asked why the bass parts were so dumbed down after that. Tallent said, "They don't call him the boss for nothing." Springsteen and producer Jon Landau simplified all the bass and drum patterns to play better on radio, and not coincidentally Springsteen went from a critical darling without any hits to a chart topper. Bottom line: don't get fancy.
Maybe stop playing bass with a pick like a guitarist would, and start playing it with your FINGERS like the instrument was designed for. ...and play it closer to the neck than bridge if you want bass tones. Why do you think Fender put that pickup where they did in 1951 when they invented the electric bass, and the finger rest where a BASS player would play it on the neck side of the pickup cover? THINK about it. Look at how upright bassists play the bass, when they're not using a bow like in the really old days. It "ain't" with a pick, if you need a hint. Yeah, tapping, pulloffs, hammer-ons, double stops, and bends can be part of a composition, but start as a bassist to come off as a bassist. Geez! Learn the instrument, like you might with something tuned differently. Faking pick playing can come with right hand fingertip tapping, or fall back on guitarist skills if something actually calls for it. Just start with the bass if you want bass. ....the tip from a bass player who played and made money doing so for over 50 years. Stop teaching people that it's okay to play the bass with a pick. It's cart before horse, if you understand what that means.
So I guess just every great bass line played with a pick is wrong because you've deemed playing with a pick is incorrect, right? Ok then cool, bye bye to the Beach Boys catalogue, Talking Heads, Rancid, The Beetles, Joy Division, The Smiths, etc. It's literally just a tool to control the tonal characteristics you want out of the instrument. Sometimes you want a pick to enhance the transient, sometimes it sounds better with fingers by giving you more of a rounded sound. I'll use either, depending on the context, as most people would. You don't have to box yourself in to being a pick player or finger player. Why limit your playing like that? It makes no sense. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to play it, and to suggest that is ludicrous.
@@SugarpillProd, don't get your panties in a wad. The premise of the video is playing bass like a guitarist. I didn't suggest to not play with a pick, only learn the instrument like it was conceived. I even said fall back on guitar skills if something calls for it. I'll throw in that if one wants the bright treble sound, play near the bridge. It's physics. Even brighter would be near the bridge with a pick. My suggestion is to learn it as a different instrument than guitar, because it is. One wouldn't play a violin as they would a mandolin or ukulele. Have a nice day.
@@SugarpillProd You too. Take care and keep rocking. I'm retired from the biz. Yeah, I'm older than you are, but I'm still here for whatever that's worth. I did just play a set that I was invited to at a major festival in New Orleans last month, so while I know I'm a dinosaur, some still think my bad take has a little merit. I have to say that it was fun to be in front of a pretty nice sized crowd (10-12 thousand) again, besides noodling around the house playing guitar like a bass player. Have a good one. Sorry if I offended, and that wasn't my intent. I get that you're trying to help newbies and it's appreciated. I look at guitarist tutorials even playing for decades. That's why your video popped up. We didn't have that back in the stone age. 😁
...that's a nice bass as video opening photo. One of mine is a '68 Telecaster, the first Fender copy of the original '51 Precision. Mine is Blonde, with the white pickguard (which hasn't seen a pick in decades, since we were sparring!!!). Take care.
It was made for a client I was working with, and J-Rock/ punk was the style they hand in mind for the song. Basically they'd give me a brief description of the "vibe" and I'd come up with something to fit that.
Im in need of my first bass after playing guitar for around a year. I have a budget of £200, and want quite a high quality instrument. What would you recommend?
I'm sure you'd be able to pick up a decent Squier bass in that kind of price range. Personally I really like Fender's Mexican made guitars. I see those go for £300-£400 normally, potentially cheaper if you find a 2nd hand one. But if your budget is super tight, Squier would be a good option. Yamaha's basses I've heard are very good too, though I've never tried one personally.
My advice to bass players, as a Bass player of 30 years: when a guitarist won't tell you the chord changes or if a chord is major, minor, etc...quit immediately!
Stop telling people what to do! Music is the ultimate in freedom of expression. I play my instruments how I want to play them. I don't listen to fools who like to hear themselves talk.
