I don't eat for 6-12 hours, yeah very occasionally I won't eat for 12 hours, Specially if I don't have pot. Just Coffee and Water...

Hello sir, I will always do intermittent fasting every day. I am fixin to start one meal every 24 hrs for a month. I look forward to fasting, it is powerful tool.. I am extreme when it comes to eating, fasting, I never used to be that way.. I am extreme with my diet. I never was before 2015. I am working up slowly and eventually do 5 day water only fasting...My goal is to water only fast for 5 days and in time, work up to 8 week fast.....I am having fun with this.. Fasting is fun and easy, very easy.. I am a good judge of how I feel and how I am.. I am intune with my body.. Right now I eat 1 or 2 meals a day. Everyday is different.. I was at 242 lbs, almost 100 lbs over ideal body weight.. I am now at 185 lbs or less..blood pressure coming down now that I changed and made a drastic change in diet, Actually it is down 35 points. I also started controlled breathing at the same time.. 35 points in 3 weeks, wow. That has been the best response since 2025. So whole foods do make a difference...along with fasting...

First, let me preface my statement by letting you know I'm old. When I was growing up in the 50s, we got breakfast at about 8:00 am, had lunch around noon, and had dinner at 6:00 pm. So I guess we were on a 10:14 intermittent fasting regimen. If I begged for food after school, my mother said, "No. It will spoil your appetite." On weekends and special occasions, we would celebrate with a bowl of ice cream or some confection after dinner. Period. This was NOT child abuse, believe it or not, that was normal family life during the 50s and 60s. That was when, may I remind you, the national obesity rate was less than 10%. It was NORMAL to have three square meals. Snacking was rare. 'Energy bars' were unheard of. I would guess that about 80% of the packaged foods that dominate supermarket shelves nowadays hadn't been invented. Now, everybody is freaking out about normal eating and giving it a new name, "intermittent fasting." Honestly; it just looks a lot like my childhood. Love your content, Thomas. Keep up the good work!

@@e.m7110 O.K., I'll bite. What am I 'not right' about? My childhood memories of the fifties? My assessment that my family's lifestyle was commonplace while I was growing up? My claim that traditional eating patterns are being re-packaged, re-branded, and recycled as "new trends" with new names? I am not trying to be contentious. I meant to imply that traditional eating patterns are sometimes validated by ongoing research and then, to make it interesting or different enough to warrant discussion, are renamed and repackaged for the public. My father's BFF for life and my godfather was Greek. He was deeply amused to find his childhood foods being touted in popular diet books as "the Mediterranean Diet." I am in a similar position, now. I grew up on three square meals a day with very little junk food and very few snacks. Now, that is considered a lifestyle intervention, a deviation from the standard diet. I'm intrigued and genuinely curious to find out what you meant.

I found it's always something that holds you back, at the beginning for me it was sweeteners, and more recently the small amount of sugar I would have in my tea or coffee in my eating window, that would drive me eat more carbs, which killed my weight loss. I also found having the occasional break from it for a day made it more effective! I'm also eating carbs more often at the end of the day, and thus has been very effective, as I feel energetic all day. Without intermittent fasting, I know I would be back above my old weight. This is the first time I've consistently lost weight... And held the same weight for more than a year in my entire life. I'm now approaching the lowest weight I've been in more than a decade, and honestly it's been easy! It was sheer hell doing regular calorie restriction, and it never stuck because it never corrects the hormonal issues that makes us fat in the first place! Intermittent fasting definitely helps to do this considerably!

My favorite is when someone at work brings in some donuts, muffins, cake, chips and dip, etc to share with everyone at the office and you politely tell them 'no thank you and that you'll have to pass', or 'I can't right now...I'm in a fasting window', and then they proceed to look at you as if you're crazy and say something like, "Oh come on! Live a little! It won't kill you to eat just a little bit!" "Just one muffin won't break your fast!"... "They're really good!" And then as if to make up for their own lack of willpower, they suddenly become an expert at intermittent fasting and proceed to tell the whole group, "I tried that whole intermittent fasting thing for A FEW DAYS and it never worked...it's all just a scam by the diet industry anyway...it's usually just pushed by people trying to sell you their new workout program. It's just a scam...." Blah blah blah. Smh. Thinking to myself, "Will you please just shut up!" Ugh...but I never say it out loud. I just smirk, and let them continue their ignorant ranting as they shovel more chips and ranch dip into their plate already filled with high calorie laden cake and other fatty, highly processed junk food. Oh, so if intermittent fasting didn't work for you (after a willpowerless 3 whole days), then I'm just supposed to throw all of my goals out the window, because they are less important than me eating this junk food right now to make you feel less guilty about making a stupid decision to buy the crap and push it on us (like a drug dealer) in the first place? And then to make things worse, every time they bring in junk food, they exclaim out loud (as if they think they are looking out for you but it actually comes across more as mocking you as everyone just kind of looks at you and chuckles) "But not for him, because he's fasting right now, so just for him I brought in some 'healthy' pre-packaged sliced deli meats, and cheese. I just don't want him to go without when the rest of us are eating cake and stuff." Thanks a-hole. Thanks. Can people be any more rude and ignorant?

Similar here, stopped my weight gain 4 years ago just with IF (but I didnt have a name for it, just realized I can easily go without breakfast and lunch) Now I lose slowly by 20/4 and caloric restriction 4-5 days a week and eating to my daily needs the rest of days. Its changed my life for the good and for good, cannot imagine ever quitting or going back to "junk" food

I did over 100 days of multi day water fasting….total fasting 3-4 days at a time a few winters ago, and continue to do this, each year, but fewer total days. My rule was to break a fast immediately if I detected any negative manifestations. Over 100 days in about 4 months is pretty intense. Ketosis was one reason initially, but autophagy remains the main goal. It is so effective that scar tissue will vanish. I was amazed to watch the dried blood under the nail of a pinched finger simply disappear over a week or so. Fasting needs to have a purpose. It also does not work well if you establish a pattern. Your body will adapt. Erratic works best….

As for "peer pressure," IDGAF what people think. I am not married to any diet really. I do what works at that moment. I was 255 Feb 2021. Now I am 196 as of today. I did it by consuming no more than 150 grams of carbs a day. I started watching calories a few months later after getting a Fitbit. I found that because I altered the way I ate, I was not getting enough calories. Fatigue is not an issue...kinda. Being a diabetic menopausal woman is really why I am tired. On 24- or 36- hours fasts, I can still do my daily 1 hour, 2+ miles very BRISK walks and not feel tired. In fact I am amazed how energized I am. I haven't seen the weight drop off like a lot of people have touted. That is not a reason for me to quit, though. I am a diabetic in remission. If IF keeps me insulin sensitive and my glucose under control, I will continue to do it. I do have alter how often I fast. I can't do it everyday for a few reasons. 1. I am still not getting enough calories during my eating windows--not matter the length. The low carb foods I eat are also usually low calorie. I am trying not to screw up my metabolism. 2. I now find my glucose level frequently drops down to 64. It's not suppose to drop below 70. (My HBA1c was 10 Feb 2021. It is now 5.4.) I am NOT on any diabetic medication. I don't think I am going to go into a coma and I feel fine when it happens; it is still a little scary. To paraphrase Dr. Fung, "the body isn't stupid." I need to have this happen one day when I am not working and have someone with me so I can see what happens ( for my own peace of mind) if I don't eat. My two cents...

Depends what you are eating. If you are having food with lots of sugar or carbs such as pasta, pizza, bread, deserts, you will feel this way. Start with soup or salad then eat your meal. This way you are easy on your stomach as it has been deprived of food for 22 hours! When you suddenly add food you will feel lethargic because a lot of energy is required to digest food after so many hours of non eating. I think 22 hours is way too stressful.

Since I started fasting regularly doing the 16/8 version I have dropped 21 lbs. i am at my ideal weight now but realize it’s best that I don’t do it every day. I am 58 but I still have a physically demanding job being a Sanitation worker. I had a really busy day after Memorial Day weekend at work so I decided to break my fast because my energy was getting depleted quickly. I think your advice is a smart way to do intermittent fasting. I guess I was overdoing it doing it everyday. My PSA came back at 4.8 after my last exam so I am also doing it for health reasons. I will be going to my Urologist in a few weeks because I went from 4.0 to 4.8 . I watched a video of a man who used fasting to starve his cancer and he actually had stage 4 prostate cancer, diabetes and other health issues. His plan worked . He did a water fast for 20 days and would just eat like broccoli and other healthy foods . His stage 4 prostate cancer is now in remission. Their are many health benefits to fasting other than losing weight. I wish I knew the name of the man he went to that guided him on his journey because this man says it is very simple to cure cancer but he is not a doctor so he doesn’t take patients but this man with stage 4 cancer said I will be your gunea pig because I did what you said in your video with Dr Berg and it is working. You may want to look up this video on You-Tube. Dr Berg ‘s video of man who beat stage 4 prostate cancer with fasting. He also stopped the cancer that spread to his bones. Very interesting story about fasting that gave me some hope in case I’m diagnosed .

I think women are different because of our hormonal makeup. I have not gotten much benefit from IF during perimeno/menopause, unless it was more like 12:12 or 10:14. I'd be hangry and high adrenaline/cortisol doing 16:8. This only put on the pounds on my regular eating days, made my body think we were in scarcity- fat storage mode. Also, could not sleep well on Keto. Got night sweats, too, worse than when eating just a balanced and varied diet. I felt terrible, cranky, sluggish and out of sorts for months trying these fads. I do pretty well and drop pounds if I just limit the sweets, breads and baked goods, no animal proteins except some fish, limit dairy, oils and gluten (all without feeling too deprived) and get regular exercise.

I've been Intermittent Fasting(20:4) going on three months now, and I am about to stop, myself. I'm 6' and I've dropped from 210lbs to 164lbs. It's time to move from fasting over to building muscle mass to help with the loose skin(not too bad, just gotta fill it out a little). I've reached my weight goals, though my body image isn't as ideal as I would want, hence the muscle building. I started my journey over 8 months ago, and in a 5 month period, I was only able to drop 20 lbs. I didn't really start dropping weight until I started my 20:4 schedule(1pm-5pm). I'll never give it up, but it is time for a break now that my insulin sensitivity should have increased and my body fat has dropped exponentially. The rest of the fat is just going to have to get eaten up from working out.

Try food combining, I did many years ago and had the most energy ever and wasn't intermittent fasting although the diet suggested it 16 - 8. You do get hungrier quicker unless loading up on protein foods a lot, but in general your body digests your meals faster needing less blood directly involved in your digestive system so more to pump around your body for other uses. Rules: 1 Do not mix protien foods with starchy foods 2 Do not overeat at one sitting 3 Eat between 12pm and 8pm no snacks outside of this time frame. 4 Eat only the foods that agree with your body.

I don’t do intermittent fasting (IF) or time restricted eating with the sole intent to loose weight. IF allows the intestinal lining to repair itself and build up the mucus lining that protects the health of the lining and thus reduce or eliminate the occurrence of a leaky gut. Why is that important? Leaky gut is the the beginning stage of autoimmune diseases.

There is merit to thermodynamics. There is merit to keto and fasting too. All of these groups are correct in their own right. I did keto for 2 years and lost a ton of weight but had difficulty making gains. I actually gained unwanted weight even with IF, and found that a mix of different protocols works best for overall strength gains while maintaining low body fat. Currently I fast twice a week for about 20 hours and train before breaking my fast. Regardless of whether or not I’m fasting I track my macros. Once a week or so I’ll enjoy a cheat day and eat whatever I want. I find this hybrid approach works best for me, for now.

I have some oatmeal with a little black strap molasses in the evening. I have lost 18 pounds and my weight has stabilized at around 160 pounds. I have also found I need to make sure I get some exercise which seems to help with sleeping. My standard food I eat every day is 4 eggs, avocado, apple, raw vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, green peppers, cucumbers, radishes, carrots). I make smoothies in the blender every other day or so using a whole lemon (all of it), blueberries, banana, kale or other green food. No sugar and avoid processed foods.

Healthy breakfast as never computed with me. It's expensive to eat 3 dinner per day just to cut out my peanut and jelly toast and 2-2 coffee in the morning. But the usual sugar breakfast did make me starve 2 hours later. Now I don't have breakfast because of IF and I think it is very time and cost convenient. Not going back. I'm 20:4 every day and I find it easy. If I crave something if it's outside feeding window it's just a NO. I don't have to think about if the food is healthy or not. This makes my life easier to think about lunch and diner only. And I can't overeat anymore as my stomach feels smaller. Lost 30lb in 1 month and a half. Did not feel like a struggle like last attempt. I do also eat lower carbs and check to see If a food is keto friendly to assist my lower/keto ish diet. Thanks Thomas for this video. My suggestion is to take a look at what fasting originated in: The ancient circumstances of living, where you had extended periods of starvation taking turns with periods of (nutritional) abundance.I can't back it up scientifically, but I got an impression, mankind is made for change - starvation and abundance (in this case). It's the same with exercising, if you don't change your practice regularly you get stuck. Our bodies seem to GRAVE FOR CHANGE every now and then. Do you have any remarks on it? And btw., you are spot on with those communities. After all, IF is not a religion.

I quit because I started losing weight too easily. I also had to add some carbs, and some sugar to 'maintain' a reasonable weight.

Thank you so much for this info. I have been doing intermittent fasting for years. It was so easy to just not cook breakfast and only cook one meal a day which I eat for lunch and dinner. I lost about 100lbs and am now close to my teenage weight. The reason why I started fasting was because I have chronic fatigue. At first I felt great, but I have been feeling like crap lately. But I noticed that when I eat out aka fast food restaurant I feel so good that day then I crash the other day. From your video I now realize I need to tone down the fasting and increase my protein. I won't get back fat because I cannot eat as much as I used to anymore. Plus I will not quit fasting entirely. I am too comfortable living like this to go back to the 3 meals a day lifestyle.

THANK YOU THOMAS Finally someone addressing the tendency of fundamentalism. That mentality is exactly why I feel so restricted and always get harrassed in dietgroups. So thanks for addressing that.

This is fascinating!!! I'm glad RU-vid suggested this to me. I'm just starting my fasting journey and what I like about it is its flexibility. By letting go of snacking all the time, which was how I was raised, I have waaaay more time to make healthy and diverse lunches and dinners. I can now afford all organic food!!! And best of all I love that I don't have to fast when I'm visiting friends or on vacation. I don't even think about it. I just know I can return to my various fasting windows when I'm back home. This isn't a cult! 😆It's a methodology for addressing metabolic syndrome and for having a more conscious approach to eating. I get if a person has life-threatening obesity and has to leverage fasting strategies to mitigate suffering from all the diseases that result from obesity. It makes total sense to be very strict but I always figured that maintaining the healthy weight loss would require adjusting the fasting to being more sporadic to avoid sliding into losing lean muscle. Why pick fights with anyone else? What I like about fasting is I"m learning about *my* body as I adopt this lifestyle but I"m also paying attention to how I respond when I"m not being strict and I'm happy to see I don't feel terrible or anything. My body is adapting well to fasting and then when just eating with friends and not really caring about my rice/pasta portion at a meal there's no radical change I've seen. Feels great and I continue to lose weight. I'm glad I saw this video because it lets me know I'm right to stay super chill about this. ☺

I agree because I learned the 16 8 was wearing me out, the hard way. I described myself as running on empty. I instinctively did as you say, changed the timing patterns and ate longer windows from time to time and got my energy back immediately. I know others who stick to it because they are afraid to gain the old weight back. Rigidity does not work and can backfire. I am looser about it all and happier as a result. TY.

Is there more background or theory to support fasting being bad for sleep? I had no idea it could have negative affects on sleep. Luv the channel!

Lex Fridman made a podcast episode with Matt Walker, wherein they talked about fastings effects on sleep. Specifically, the body produc8 a wake-promoting hormone called orexine. However, it varies how fasting affects sleep on an individual level Peter Attia says he gets very great sleep during prolonged fasts Personally, I also sleep rather lightly during prolonged fasts or when I had lunch as last meal of the day. I highly recommend the podcast episode with Matt Walker though, I think there is also a Clip excerpt of that topic.

I alternate between three meals, two meals and zero meals. I do three meals the day after I do resistance training, high protein, high fat, low carb. I do two meals the day of resistance training, which I do fasted. I fast at least a full day most weekends, often both days. I don't even attempt to restrict calories. I eat to satiety. I change it up. Glad you're stressing protein. If I'd change anything I've done in the past, it would be to get more protein and work those muscle groups-from day one, having been a regular weightlifter in the past. PS: On resistance training day, I break my fast with lean protein and a collagen shake with aminos (a couple carbs.) PPS: I went to this after extended quarterly fasts for a couple years, with keto in between. I'm still keto. I'm happy with my high-protein, low-carb lifestyle, though I still could get a LOT leaner. I'm not in a big hurry to do that.

I started intermittent fasting about a month ago. I am trying to reduce the medication I take for type 2 diabetes. My Dr. is trying to get me to lose weight and take more meds to control my sugars. I have tried everything over the last 20 years and all I’ve done is gain weight and increased my meds. Fasting has been easy and so far I am feeling better. My sugars have jumped around at first, but in the last week, I have noticed they are coming in a little lower. Not a lot, but enough to encourage me to go on with it. Thank you Thomas for these videos.

thomas, I always thought that when fasting, the purpose was to restrict your calorie intake window, rather than just eating less. so instead of eating say 2000 calories in 8-10 hours, you would eat that in 4-8 hours and fast the rest of the time.

I should say, I’m not aware of having these problems prior to fasting. I began overdoing blueberries and whole fat cream. Eating dysfunction. I was better off prior to fasting. I was sold on fasting.

What if I could never eat breakfast? I'm 62 and since the age of 1 my body is repulsed by food in the morning. What I do, I switch it up; 18hrs-20hrs-24hrs. I do it 4 days /week, the 3 others, I eat what I want, still very healthy but I don't count carbs. It's been 10 months, and I'm still getting the benefits.

Ancel Keyes (I know) did a starvation study after WWII. He found that while fasting, we can only get 30 calories per pound of fat per day. So if your BMR is 1200 calories per day, you would need 40 pounds of body fat to support that. In the late '60's, Dr. George Cahill found that in starvation, for a BMR of 1500 calories, the body makes 80g of glucose per day, part of it comes from breaking down 20g of protein. To lose fat, Dr. Ted Naiman says eat more protein, less carbs and fats. Look into his PE Diet.

Maybe your best video yet! I've seen so many people getting irrationally committed to a set of sacred diet rules. Mixing it up and shocking my system on occasion is what makes IF work for me. We don't have to chose the "one true diet" and stick with it for life. If you've put in the work to obtain metabolic flexibility, take advantage and have a few carbs. You might even enjoy breakfast every now and then.
