Two years of fasting 17 hours a day most days, eating very low carb. After my kidney doctor told me “don’t expect to get better”, I went from stage 3 kidney failure to within normal range for my age. Above 60% at age 69.
I mean thats just normal eating. You sleep 8 hours you wake up you break your fast a while later you don't keep eating till you go to sleep. That's normal. That's just normal. 😂

10 months in of 16/8 fasting daily with no food on Wednesdays (so a 40 hour fasting window - from Tuesday start of fast to Thursday end of fast). Went from 325lb to 237lb and still going down 1 to 2 lbs a week. My high blood pressure and diabetes have both gone away and off all doctor prescribes medications. I walk 50,000 steps a week.
I started watching this channel this year. Down from 242 to 206 since April. I feel fantastic Thomas. I am taking care of my dad who has vasular dementia and he just didn't take care of his stressors and diet and along with genetics his health finally caught up with him. I was desperate to find something to at least give me a chance and found this channel. Thanks for all you do.
B complex with folic acid helps against dementia along with Mediterranean diet and IF. This is what was prescribed to me to slow the process of dementia.
I would LOVE to be part of a study like this for 5 weeks After losing 27 lb in 4 months via IF and training, for the first time in over 30 years my liver and kidney blood values were normal. Plus my non-alcoholic fatty liver is GONE - just gone. My docs are very pleased, and one said „Told you, thanks for finally taking the plunge!“ Worked for me - and I keep doing it, because it feels good.
I was 110kg in 2020, started IF and finally worked up to OMAD, let me tell you, that one meal a day, I ate literally ANYTHING I wanted, pizza, pasta, icecream (probably 3-4 times a week), rice, etc. all the carbs you can think of. Paired with walking about an hour and a half everyday. In completely 100% honesty, I lost 50KILOS within less than a year and came down to a weight I was when I was a teenager. Felt so AWESOME! Filled with energy, ZERO grogginess waking up each day. I even started a successful business and finally was able to work for myself, which was a decision I made before I started IF. All the logic needed for IF is what I found in a video titled "what I learned about IF and why I eat once a day", I don't know if that's the exact title, however, you can look up the channel "what I learned" and you'll find it.
I 100% Believe you because that's exactly how I do it and it works I also walk for the same time some days 1hr some 1hr 30min when I change my route... but I eat everything I fast for 22hrs somedays 24hrs other days even 26hrs but never under 20hrs I like the over 20 I just eat my meal & I'm done. Lost heaps No counting anything I feel super
@@moxee- hey 👋🏻, to answer your question, no i did not do any heavy lifting, just body weight exercises. Since upon my research and trial and error, lifting heavy on a fast is not the best idea, since your body needs to recover and needs protein to fix those micro tears in muscle fibres, else you're just going to end up doing some permanent damage. Brisk walks and some low intensity body weight exercise is perfect for losing weight and keeping the body agile. However, through my research, I have found that there is work around for lifting heavy while fasting too. Basically, experts say you have to consume protein within 2 hours after a workout. So, if you workout 2 hours before you break your fast, it will be perfectly fine to even lift heavy on an empty stomach. Mind you all this information is regards to OMAD. Here are a couple of scenarios to help you understand what I mean a little better. SCENARIO 1: Your OMAD is lunch and you decide to workout lifting heavy in the evening or night, NOT A GOOD IDEA! SCENARIO 2: Your OMAD is lunch and you decide to workout lifting heavy 2 hours before lunch, which is perfectly fine. SCENARIO 3: Your OMAD is lunch and you decide to wake up and do light exercise including body weight before you break your fast and then even a walk after you break your fast in the evening or night, also perfectly fine and this is the route I took. What I did exactly was 30-45 mins stretching, bodyweight and walk in the morning, 20-30 mins walk after lunch and another 20-30 mins walk later in the evening or night. Wow, that was a long story 🤣, hope this helps!
@@captaincaveman8729 Hi🙂 Thank you for taking the time to answer my question about working out with One Meal a Day (OMAD). I really appreciate the detailed information you provided. I agree that brisk walking is a great option since jogging isn't really my thing. I also like the flexibility of OMAD, allowing you to eat whatever you want, but since the eating window typically lasts only an hour, I'm considering trying intermittent fasting with an 18/6 or 20/4 schedule. Perhaps I’ll give OMAD a shot once a week! I admire your discipline, and I appreciate you sharing your insights! Cheers
@@DarkAbyss9 It depends on why you are time restricted eating. I'm not trying to lose weight and I don't want an energy deficit. I want lower blood glucose and insulin for more of the day, ideally with a bit of a bump with my main meal. That is working for me.

Just wanted to share my first time fasting experience with someone. I have struggled with my weight all my life. Have been addicted to food, especially chocolate. I'm just shy of 58 yrs old. Started at 272 lbs. Grandmother, Dad, Uncle all developed diabetes at my age. All died a agonizing death. Realized I have to take action. For past month been eating only evening meal with my family. Benefits thus far. Lost 11 lbs. For 1st time in my life, no longer have food cravings, not even chocolate. No special meal prep, just eat whatever rest of family is eating, as much as I desire. It was challenging at first, but now, I don't even think about food.
Hi, look into carnivore diet as well. There's a RU-vid channel called "no Carb life" it is nothing but testimonials of people telling their stories of their carnivore journey. People are curing incurable diseases. Cancer, diabetes, multiple schlorosis, etc. Ive been carnivore 4 months now and I've lost 35 lbs. Best shape I've been in for over 20 years.
I have lost over 100 pounds intermittent fasting and reducing carbohydrates. Hit my stride when I scaled down to a 20-4 fasting window. Was able to produce huge calorie deficits without feeling hungry.
Nice work, all my fat friends couldn’t do what yo did because they quit after 2 weeks. Ten years plus, if they just lost 10 pounds a year they’d lose the 100 pounds they need to lose, but noooooooo 😂 congrats 🔥🔥🔥
I do the same thing but I go twenty four hours usually, sometimes thirty. If I am hungry after 24 hours I eat, if not I go to thirty hours. I have never gone more than 36 hours and never less than 18.

At 48 years old I couldn’t loose weight even fallowing my old lo carb and just fasting 24 hours like I did 7-8 years… After watching Jason Fung and buying a mojo meter I was able to see that my glucose wasn’t dropping until about 24 hours so I knew my body wasn’t burning any fat until about 24 hours. So I started doing 36 hour fasts and bam 80lbs came off. It is definitely hormonal and everyone (depending on how insulin resistant you) will have to fast longer or shorter to allow your glucose to drop. Good luck.
I knew cico was bs. Edit to respond to the cicotaliban below since somene keeps deleting my response; /@marcd2743 it is complete bs. Cico only works for weight loss, not fat loss, at least important fat which is the visceral fat. And i didnt even talk about fat cell count, that is super important and more than cico because fat cells cannot be destroyed and no matter how thin you are the grelin signal is still the same. With high insulin you can restrict calories all you want that YOU WONT LOOSE VISCERAL OR BELLY FAT. you will only loose weight, muscle, etc, but not fat And you will lower testosterone. People that are metabolically unhealthy with high fat cell count and above 25% body fat will fail with cico and plateau at around 20% body fat if their insulin stays high. Period. If you defend cico that is because youve never been TRULLY FAT. ( that is visceral fat with insulin belly, fattly liver, leaky gut, etc.. ) Oh and thermodynamics is MUCH MORE THAN CICO, research jason fung and dr lustwig

@@TrueWren I do the fast every meal. Start out at 24 hours and a low cab and then 36-41 hours. It’s not exactly 36 hours for me because of my schedule and I’m not a breakfast person so I just eat at 2pm on Monday and then my next meal is at 8pm Tuesday (mentally the easiest day). then I don’t eat at all on Wednesday. My next meal is at 2pm on Thursday repeat. I would eat one meal consisting of at least one pound of meat and some fries or baked potato. I would normally only eat half the potato or half a medium fry. The fries help keep my stomach from getting upset from the meat and fat. Also staying a way from meat glue helps the stomach allot also. I try to keep the carbs below 30 grams and only add them after I’m in ketoses. This way of eating works for me at 6’2 300lbs but now I’m 210lbs and it’s still working and i feel amazing.
I agree, 14 hours fast is just normal like the time between dinner and breakfast. I don’t consider that fasting when I’ve not had to stop myself from eating at all
@@metagaminguniversemgu2240 it's tough at first, but I also switched to eating only whole foods with a focus on protein. So once I stopped eating the processed and ultra processed foods, that crack head like cravings went away.
I do that, too, and I LOVE IT, I’m down 29 pounds, but I have been dealing with gallbladder issues! I was diagnosed with a 14mm gallstone, which can be caused by fasting.
That is my baseline to with a longer fast once a month. Still trying to get to a health BMI but its working. Weekly 48hr fast keeps everything in line for me. Reduced inflammation, more alert, less brain fog so many benefits.
I started 16/8 fasting because I fancied the idea of autophagy. I don't need to lose weight and from Monday to Friday I don't miss not having a breakfast. I break my fast on Saturday and Sunday as I do like a slice or two of toast :) The study doesn't really cover autophagy and just looks at weight loss and other health benefits so I'll carry on for now.
Thank You for bringing up the health benefits of IF … it’s not just normalizing our weight, but not spiking insulin , repairing our bodies etc. It’s about optimal living.
@@thabettalova Not really. The process is "on" all the time, at around 16 is when it starts increasing and in theory keeps increasing for up to 24-48 hours. Now, this heavily depends on your diet and your starting point. If you always had a low carb diet, and don't have a bunch of sugar/fat stored anyways... well, body will pump up that state way earlier that for someone who during his fasting window ate heavy calorie/sugary stuff. If you want to be sure I guess throwing 48hs fast every 2 weeks would be the way to go. For me particularly I think I would not need that much to deplete absolutely everything
I have been pro active in my health most of my life. As a senior, i have had the opportunity to try many different things. What i found for me to be of most value: 1. Intermittent fasting. 2.Lowering my carbohydrates.3. 80/20 workouts. No more than 1 or 2 alcohol drinks per week. 4. Try to get better sleep. 4. Natural vitamins. Note: I have tried cutting calories across the board but was always hungry. Intermittent seems to work much better with caloric intake. Before IF, i was probably about 20lbs overweight and no amount of exercise would help. I have lost that excess and would challenge anyone to try a see what works for you and do those things.
Just an FYI that drinking something like flavored LMNT will trigger the body to release insulin thus technically breaking the fast. A true clean fast will get you the most benefits from a cellular standpoint. On a clean fast, you can still do black coffee, plain unflavored green or black tea, or the unflavored LMNT and maintain the most benefits. The problem with any added flavors, even if technically unsweetened, is that the body still interprets it as something sweet from the moment it touches the tastebuds
@@michaelmaye9360 It’s not the calories, it’s the body’s reaction when exposed to a sweet flavor. Check out the book “Fast, Feast, Repeat” regarding the whole concept of a clean fast and it’s metabolic benefits
I have been 16/8 fasting every day for the last 4 years give or take 10 or so days where I didn't. I'm 59, lean, muscular and play pickleball fasted almost every morning. I've never felt better in my life. Call it metabolic flexibility, or whatever, I can delay my feeding window all day if need be. No blood sugar drops, never hangry, lots of energy, and can eat healthy carbs because I'm active.
how do you get the proteins you need i feel like have to eat all day to hit the target and im still short. They say you can only digest like 10g of protein in an hour.
Thomas seems more interested in shatting out videos that all contradict each other than try to actually provide helpful advice. It has become chaotic source of conflict and fear. I have been unsubbed for a while now.
I am 56 years old male, have been fasting for 2 months, all I have to say is that I will be fasting 16 8 for the rest of my life. Benefits are endless and amazing. ❤
My personal experience: i started fasting a year and half ago became of elbow injury and menopause. In last few years i ganed 20lb without realizing it, due to insulin resistance. Make long story short. I m back to 125lb. I dont do aggressive fasting anymore. I do 24hrs once a week. Dont eat after 4-5 pm. Weekends 13 hrs fast. My weight stays the same. My skin looks awesome. And yes, i eat less.
I've been watching your content for at least 6 years, and was turned on to IF by this channel when most people had never even heard of it. It changed my life no doubt. I'm able to maintain a healthy weight with ease while other forms of dieting and lifestyle changes just didn't stick. I do a 2-3 day per week 16-18 hour fast, skipping days in between. Workout fasted. Eating window closes 2 hours before bed. 72-hour fast once per quarter to give the internal organs and systems of the body a chance to recover and rejuvenate. In the very least, I think time restricted eating like this can be the crux of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for all the reasons mentioned in this video. Even if IF on its face doesn't cause you lose more weight, the affects of following a time restricted eating window clearly lead to that result. And that's why virtually everyone who has tried it for any reasonable amount of time swears by it.
@@JCS1964-i7w oh for sure it is. If u eat in less time then by its nature u gonna eat less. For people who cant control their portions its great. If one can control portions then fasting to lose weight is suboptimal
@@DarkoFitCoach Agreed !!! But you are leaving out the fact that if you fast long enough your body will go into a state of Ketosis and start burning off stored fat. Which is obviously beneficial for weight reduction and gaining muscle. But, I’m not in disagreement with your caloric intake statement, because in actuality it really is that simple. But fasting does have some other benefits to just calorie intake. Especially for people who are extremely overweight and bodies are storing a large portion of fat.
@@JCS1964-i7w U are somewhat on the right path but are confused. One doesnt need to be fasting to burn fat. In fact your body is every single moment burning as well as storing fat. Its an ongoing process. To lose unwanted fat what is required is to be in a caloric deficit. Thus energy intake lower then what is being used. So less is being stored and more is being burned. Its simple as that One doesnt need to be in ketosis to burn fat One doesnt need to be fasting to burn fat One doesnt need to just eat 1 meal to burn fat Key component is caloric deficit. You can eat 12 meals today as long as u are in a deficit you will burn fat and lose weight.
I’ve been doing a 16/8 fast 6 days a week since I was 9 y/o and I’m in my 50’s now. I would stay up till 2am every night and wouldn’t have time for breakfast. 12 years ago I started drinking coffee and it made me gain weight. I was 135lbs in college, 145 in my 30s, 155 in my early 40s then went to 180lbs in my mid 50s. 6 months ago I cut out 90% of sugar and 90% of seed oils then started eating as much meat and animal products and I’m down to 160lbs most of the drop happened in the first 30 days of changing my diet. I want to get to 145-150. There is more poison in our food than ever before, luckily an animal based diet clears you out. Watch all of butter bob’s videos on YT for more info on what works. Insulin does something very simple, it tells our bodies to either make fat or burn it. If it never goes low which happens after 12 hours our bodies are in the making fat mode all the time and we ballon up. 16/8 fasting is necessary to maintain weight. But eating carbs makes this difficult as carbs make you hungry, must eat more fat to get skinny and keep hunger away. Bob explains it in his videos
Fasting during the week, strength training, 10k steps and keto are my holy grail. Yall can come out with a study a day for all I care, I know that works for me and I ain’t going back. Best shape of my life
As an academically qualified epidemiologist, I would like to congratulate you on being one of the very few health commentators on RU-vid to understand (never mind attempt to explain) the distinction between "statistical significance" and physiological significance!
So the study referenced was done in men with prediabetes in 2018. For me as a post menopausal women I am not going to use this data for my own use case. I am neither male, nor do I have prediabetes. Even in human trials we are not all the same. I wish this things would be made much clearer when a study is brought up!
It is very common that the results of ONE scientific paper (which includes a specific group of people) are used to make recommendations for the whole population. Overall IF is good but the "optimum" time varies according to each person's physical, metabolic, etc... condition. I do 14-15 hrs fasting every day (some days it is a bit longer). If I did longer fasts it would be difficult for me to get all the calories that I need without losing weight and I do not want to lose weight, I am fit.
I'm in your situation, but I must say I feel great when I fast. It's also likely that the pause in insulin requirements and sugar burning will promote beta cell healing and efficient respiration (reduced ROS), independent of sex/prediabetic status.
The practice of fasting has changed my life significantly. Not only because of its own benefits, but it also helped me reshape my mindset and food choices. Still practice it daily, with 1-2 meals of high protein, moderate fat, low-moderate carbs. Only drink water, milk, and tea. Used to drink coffee, but its high caffeine was causing problems with sleep and anxiety, which I'm still working on. It's a blessing to not feel constantly hungry anymore.
The only concern I have about intermittent fasting, and Peter Attia talks about this, is that you have to make sure you get adequate protein, and there may be a limit on how much you can absorb in a single meal. When I'm doing 18/6 days, I don't have a strong-enough appetite for more than 2 meals. However, I might not be able to effectively utilize more than 50g of protein in a meal. This will limit my daily protein intake to 100g, below the recommended 1.5g/kg level. It may be a better strategy to do 6 days of, say, 12/12 fasting and then one day of total abstinence, or some variation on this. Of course, all this will be highly dependent on the individual and the objectives sought from fasting (weight loss, longevity, etc.).
My experience for what it's worth. I never had breakfast in my life as I'm not feeling hungry in the morning. I was eating 2 meals a day. In my late 40s, I started gaining weight, and also having palpitations at night. I put it down to having a big dinner, so I started skipping dinner altogether and the miracle happened. For years now, I have eaten only lunch or dinner, depending on the situation. I lost all excess weight and my health improved beyond recognition. My doctor said to keep up whatever I'm doing. The good thing about it is that I do feel my stomach is empty at times, but it does not bother me as I never feel excessively hungry.
Why would fasting more longterm (longer than the 5 weeks of this study) not be recommended? Why would continuing to eat within a 6 hr window be a problem? Who says we need three meals a day? Or two meals? Or even eating every day?
I came to ask the same question. I’m wondering if the data shows a decline in benefit or even a negative benefit by the end of the fasting period. Or would there continue to be benefits that are sustainable in which case why the limitation? Also, would the same benefits be achieved by long fasting periods chopped up by days of normal eating. How long does it take the body to respond? It probably has something to do with how broken your metabolism is. Sorry for the long reply.
It’s inspiring to hear the positive energy of people who’ve changed their life’s trajectory for the better here. Note, if you find fasting hard, it’s ok. Whether you find optimization of healthy eating and metabolic health through fasting or simply get lean and healthy by “eating when hungry and stopping when comfortably full” (or “flexible fasting” advanced version of such) of foods that are nutrient dense but modest in calorie density (helping us feel full on fewer calories) doesn’t matter much as choosing the path you can live with. Also, if you’re on multiple medications for blood pressure, lipids and/or glucose (esp insulin or sulfonylureas) at the start of your journey, PLEASE give your doc a heads up so they can be ready to work with you and wean your medications down accordingly. You don’t want hypotension or hypoglycemia in the process of getting healthier as your “lifestyle medicine” is taking over your needs for pharma medicine. I practice metabolic internal medicine and lifestyle medicine for a living, btw.
I have personally been on OMAD for about three years and I'm 59 and in great shape so I wouldn't be worrying about too much fasting, humans are meant to fast we are hunter gatherers we are not meant to be stuffing ourselves every couple hours that's gross!
Funny, this was my MO many years ago when I weighed a LOT less than I do now. I still weigh more than I should, but without even thinking about it I have been heading back to this pattern and being more intentional about what my OMAD is. Very informative. 7:17 I also understand that it is better to NOT fast every day - otherwise your body is smart and will adjust its processes to match, negating some of the effects.
@@SyncETod Don’t eat before 11:00 am. Better yet eat your first food at lunchtime. If you’re having 2 meals a day, have the second one between 3:00pm and 5:00pm and definitely nothing after 7:00 pm. There’s plenty of tolerance room there to eat when convenient and still fast. If you’re only eating one meal a day, make it a big one and you don’t need to worry about how long to fast, once a day will sort that out for you.

how about the time-of-day question? Traditionally -in Buddhist tradition for example it is the morning when one eats, and the afternoon when one no longer eats. In almost all the modern "intermittent fasters" it is the opposite : "skip breakfast" The study you discuss is consistent with the traditional timing, not the modern one. So is it an issue?

I will never stop IF/OMAD. It just works for me. Better mental clarity, mood, energy, and I’m 52 today and I have a six pack. My blood work showed low TG, high HDL.
12h fast = not eating 4 hours before sleep. This simple "fast" should be done everyday by everyone. Fasting 12 hours before breakfast gives the body time to recover while sleeping. Longer proper fasting should be done more seldom of course.
That's what I do. Last meal at 8 PM, go to bed between 10-11 PM, wake up at 6:30 AM, drink two glasses of water, drop my kids at school by subway then walk back home (2 miles on an empty stomach) then I'm back home around 8:30 AM and just then I have my breakfast. Easiest 12 hour fast method ever. I'm thinking about extending it a bit as I struggle with bloating and gas, and I've found that the longer I fast, the better I feel in that regard.
It's safe to say that you can personally experiment and have a journal to document everything. See what works for you, personally I've been fasting for awhile and stopped since I'm eating healthier now and feel better. The more I fasted consecutively the more fatigue I felt regardless of electrolytes. But I also ate just one meal, wasn't that big of a meal either lol
I've been doing 16-17 hour fasting everyday for the past 5 years now. It's no longer about "weight loss". It's really about preventing insulin resistance. Now my Hb1Ac is normal, my triglycerides is

I've been on OMAD for a long time. Chronic obesity required a hip replacement in 2017. I went from 290-320 to 235. Got the hip replaced in 2017. Got off OMAD. Weight ballooned up to 260. Got back on it and lost back down to 235. Had a knee and shoulder replaced in 2021. Going to have to have another hip replaced in 2024. My weight is at 220. My A1C is at 5.1. I'm 65 years old. OMAD is a tool to lower your calories and give your body time to burn off the fat and sugar. Nothing more, nothing less. It works for a lot of folk. Just let your body burn off the calories and you will be fine.
Fasting is amazing! I love doing a 10 day only water and eyes closed as often as you possibly can for regenerating results, digesting toxins, metabolism reset ….. I wish you would do a study on this. Maybe sure to break your fast very slowly……. I did stewed tomatoes and watermelon for three days to break. AMAZING RESULTS
Man that’s sooooo stressful on the body though. Could never get a good workout in or even recover from one. If you are pretty sedentary then yeah go for it lol
It's simple. We have to be realistic, 90% of the people will never fast too much. It will not happen. So, it has to be made easier. How? Well, every week you stop eating on Thursday night at 6PM. You don't eat anything on Friday. And you start eating on Saturday at 9AM. It's not only about insulin, not the most important thing. There are lot of other things in the background. Is your stomach hurt from years and years of abusing food? Maybe it needs to heal some scars. Or your esophagus? Or your liver needs to regenerate a little bit. Give body one day 100% to repair, at least a little bit itself every week. That's more manageable than everything else. Only extreme people can go to extreme diets, and that is like maybe 5% to 10% of whole population. Rest of us can easily do 1 full day of not eating.
I've been doing a 19- 5 split for going on 3 weeks now..2 weeks prior was doing 16-8..man I feel great and feels like I am getting stronger every day.. I'll be 50 in 3 months.
I take a break from int. 16-8 fastin during summer when kids are home. I don't feel much different. I assume I have to go 18-6 instead. It's harder to pull it off. The difficulty with fasting comes in the last few hours if people give me stress. I become testy and quite upset. When im alone those hours are serene and I think very clearly. So I suppose one should avoid people as well as food for the full benefits.
Hi. This is like the fifth or sixth click-bait titling I’ve seen around ‘breaking’ IF research from you. It’s annoying. If you do it again, I’m unsubbing. Switch up your tactics, homie.
@@TeamCGC98 Why would I be whining? I don’t need to watch these videos or subscribe. But I do both because I generally like the channel and content. What I don’t care for, tho, is regular click-bait headlines and semi-misleading titling of the videos. I think it’s lazy and, frankly, I’m tired of seeing them so many times, here, in a short period of time, so I’m sharing that feedback. Maybe he’ll see it, maybe he won’t. But I’m sure I’m not alone. And also who the fk are you? Do you really think Thomas needs you to come to his rescue? Grow up, move on.
Agreed, but I think his editing team pushes that agenda. It is definitely annoying and I've mentioned the constant clickbait titles before, but we are seeing this with most of the content creators because of fierce competition. I know character and I see Thomas as genuine an sincere, and I would bet that he probably doesn't like some of the manipulation in these titles but it's unfortunately the new norm...
Thomas have had to note that the study was done in obese people with prediabetes. Chances are high that its results aren't relevant to lean metabolically healthy folks.
I’m pretty sure the success of IF is down to fewer blood sugar spikes. I’d noticed this even before I knew about IF. On days I skipped breakfast I was less hungry at lunch time, whereas when I had an early breakfast (esp. carbs) I was starving by 10 am. I find 11am-6pm eating window works best for me. In any case, you want to leave at least 3-4 hours between your last meal and bedtime. I never sleep well if I eat too close to bedtime. Paradoxically, I also feel less hungry in the morning if I go to bed with an empty stomach.
I do an 18 hour fast 2 days per week and a 72-hour fast once per quarter. Never felt healthier since doing this. Maybe it's just part of a healthy lifestyle, but for people looking to establish a healthy lifestyle, I think basing it around fasting is going to give you the best chance at success long term. Believe it or not, I actually look forward to the 72-hour fasts now.
I don't fast , I eat 3 meals a day over 10 hrs ... im lean , muscular and healthy . So why fast ? I feel great ... Sleep is more important than fasting
@@stevepasco5850 I agree sleep is very important. I was facing my mortality and need to get back to health again so I fast. Not fun I like food too much but fasting works for me for now until I get healthy again.
Me too. What he is talking about is Time Restricted Eating not intermittent fasting. Shatchi Panda PhD (University of Southern California San Diego ?) has studied time restricted eating and it is better linked with circadian rhythms. Valter Longo PhD also to name a just 2 researchers.
test everything on yourself and find your optimum :) all these studies are often the overall and each person had various results TEST ON YOURSELF I do best doing OMAD and carnivore and been doing it 5 years now but will eat a second if truly hungry I go by eat when hungry eat to satiated
@@rachelbrondel5858 Hello Yes many find it does but not as much reduce as truly satiates of fills you up with nutrients so you are just not hungry :) Many will say since its so nutrient dense if anything many under eat at first because tey are not used to being full in a way where you are satisfied and then not hungry Also google how carbs actually trigger you to eat more which is a vicious cycle Hope that helps :)
@@rachelbrondel5858 I am 90 % vegetarian and I do not go hungry. I do IF but not longer than 16 hours because I find difficult to ingest all the calories I need in such a short time.
@@teresamexico309 Nobody goes hungry during 16 hours no matter what diet, 16h is really a waste because that's just the breaking point when things starts to happen. But people conflate "benefits starts at 16h" with "let's fast for 16h".
First they say it dangerous, then that it dont work. After we show that it work, they say dont do it long term. At what point we just say to their fat asses to go sex their own body. If you realized modern medicine just treat trauma and symptoms its no wonder population is so sick. They have no idea how most medicine work and its trial and error method and see what side effect it have. I see a trend that any method that make you consume less food and make you healthy so you dont use any pills not even for pain or supplements. Is out right censored, they try to infiltrate Keto and discourage many from it by promoting and selling Keto foods that was full of carbs. And would you know no one on over 300+g of carbs start loosing weight cause they never enter ketosis. I have to go under 50 to trigger it and try 20g. I still remember that one beer or half a onion will already bring me to my daily limit of carbs. Now i am not that sensitive and maintain ketosis even if i have some junk food here or there. And even then i try to avoid fiber and grain. So i will feel even a relatively small piece of cake the next day, and cant even eat outside cause even the meat prepared using oil will upset my stomach a little.
LMNT has malto dextrin in the flavored ones, is that okay? Not sure if it's in the unflavored one. I'm talking about the powders, not sure about the new product.
It's not good. It's also super high in sodium. Better to buy NOW potassium citrate and magnesium glycinate powders, and Redmond Real salt to make your own. It's cheaper, can be adjusted every time you have it, and zero additives. Sponsorship pays bills.
@@THill-nu6bz Thank you so much for this info. I have POTS so I'm always trying to figure out the right electrolytes besides just my Redmond Salt. Means a lot you took the time/effort to share this info. Take good care.
@SeatoSky1111 You're welcome. I'm not a doctor, neither is Thomas, just some dude on the internet that replied about some electrolytes. Please check with your NP or doctor for safe levels for you. If you do buy the supplements, compare the amount to full-sugar Gatorade, LMNT, etc. You're paying a premium for their packaging, marketing, and (perhaps) convenience. With that comes things like maltodexterin to mass-market it as hyper-palatable.
I am eating one very healthy home-cooked meal a day. It can be vegetables, fruit, rice, pasta, buckwheat, vegetables, fish, eggs, milk, youghurt, cottage cheese. I tend to stay away from red meat and poultry because I found even though I have craving for meat, I do not feel that great after consuming it. I lost 4.5 stones in weight over the course of 1.5 years. I was going through a depression due to family circumstances. There were days when I did not want to eat, but I made a rule to eat at least once a day. Then I started to feel better. But then the habit of eating once a day became so natural that I decided to keep it.
Do you have a more basic video on the main/top benefits of intermittent fasting? (A video you could send to someone new to this, to convince them to try intermittent fasting)
I know it wasn’t directed at me and this isn’t quite what you asked, but the reasons to convince someone would be different for each person. If they had a reason to make a change I’d hope they’d be willing to try it so they can find out for themselves how it works for them! Key points are how you break your fast, focusing on high protein meals, and eating more satiating foods to keep you full into evening. Lots of water, coffee or certain teas in the morning to fight of some of that hunger. I often like to delay my first meal to allow me more flexibility in my diet in the evening so I can eat more or go out for dinner etc. Hope this was at least a little helpful!
This is so relevant. For myself I can comfortably live in a 16:8 lifestyle. I've tried to go past that to 17:7. Couldn't do it. So I've been wondering if 16:8 is good enough. Answer: yes. Thank you Thomas!
Of course it works. I gravitated to intermittent fasting, because it just felt natural for me. Usually between 16-18 hrs per day with one big meal, no breakfast, and have been doing this for several years now. Eating predominantly a plant-based diet with lots of strength, aerobic, and flexibility exercises, are the key for me. I feel in the best shape of my life. Boundless energy. Age 77.
All great for the obese. For those looking to build muscle and add 20 lbs, not recommend. For high end athletes, even many high end weekend warriors, also not recommend. For someone overweight but also having sarcopenia, not recommend. Context matters. Plus the study is missing some "controls".
@@dontfit6380 WOW, you missed the boat. Point is, he wasn't doing both at the same time. Context matters. Bulk phase / build muscle tissue with energy / food surplus, then cut phase with intermittent fasting. But no one who is lean, does a hard cut phase with intermittent fasting and builds large amounts of muscle at the same time. It just doesn't happen, unless they are bodybuilders using PEDs (injections, pills,...).
I am 60 years old, and used to be a one meal a day guy most of my life. I have been fasting (18-6) for about 5 years and I cannot articulate how great I feel. I have tons of energy, my mental clarity is spot on, my mood stability has also improved by orders of magnitude. I make sure that I eat very few carbs daily, hydrate well with electrolytes, and maintain my ideal weight. Also, my numbers are excellent for a person my age. Yes, I walk a few miles daily and ride a mountain bike when I can, do some kettle bell work, and I have never felt better overall. I wish I would have known about IF many years ago because I would have been on board 100%. Anyway, never felt better, really, and no cravings, no hunger between fasts, and endless energy.
I liked it but it seemed too pricey to me. I now use a high quality sea salt, magnesium at night, and potassium with the iodine drops I put in my post workout meal. If LMNT was like 30 cents per serving maybe, but being able to adjust my electrolytes and buy in bulk works better for me
@Mavrik-60 it's a pretty good ratio with the 3 electrolytes but you're right...almost none of the supplements generally have enough potassium. I use chronometer app to track how I am doing and supplement what I don't get with my natural diet
You published this video on Aug 14th. One day before that was Aug 13th which was the first day that I ate nothingn for one whole day. Falling asleep was a bit tough, but I slept until my alarm woke me up. Results: My apetite went down a lot til today (6th day of diet). I ate about 500 calories on the next day after the fast, 600 on the third day, and now I am eating less than 1000 a day and I have no apetite. Which is strange and amazing at the same time. This feeling is new to me, as I am no stranger to dieting (I normally cut calories by 40% for 2-4 months, done it many times). So, for all of those struggling to stick to a diet, try to fast for like one day and it will take care of your apetite. Make sure to east plenty of salt and water.
Missing in the narrative is the fact this was tested on "prediabetic men" (see 4th reference link)...so, if you're not prediabetic (or male) would the results be the same?
Oh wow! Who funded the trial? What were the parameters? Ages of those taking part in the trial. Was the release of different benefits (growth hormone etc) at different stage? What were the foods? Did they eat saturated fats or eating seed oils (PUFAS)? Did they eat meals in theor eating windows or did they snack/eat all the way through the eating window. You say its not calorie controlled and then go on to explained that the researchers worked out the calories...
An interesting thing I don’t see a lot of people talk about is that when you fast you also deprive and kill parasites that usually ask you for food around the clock. I could fast randomly any day and I never get headaches anymore. I also don’t crave sweets or carbs as much as I would and I find myself highly satiated with a decent protein to veggie ratio
