Due to my insane schedule of balancing a 9-to-5 career and blogging, I didn't realize I was in the middle of my own transition. I shared on my social media outlets what I was "letting GO" and encouraged my followers to do the same with the hashtag “#iamlettingGO.”
Six months ago, I revealed a new style where I cut my signature shoulder length curls as part of the “letting go” process on Instagram and my blog. Here is the real reason why I removed something that I identified with so much in this heartfelt video. I hope you enjoy!

I buzzed mine 7 months ago. I've been maintaining it a number 2 Clipper guard ever since. It's the most amazing thing I've ever done for myself! I have no plans to let it grow out...I just love it!

I love this video, this is so beautiful and inspiring. It actually made me cry because it reminded me of when I shaved my head. There is this stigma that comes with curly hair, and yet it seems almost unbearable to live without. This gives such a positive message to little girls as well as older women who are afraid to embrace their hair in every stage(bald,twa, biggggg Afro)

Mel, big hair, red hair, grey hair, no hair, your beauty has radiated through and through. Your inner self spoke from the heart asking to come out and to rebirth you. this hit home in a serious way. i, too, am in a major transition process both personally and professionally...and made the decision a few weeks ago to cut off my hair. my appt is next wed at 8am. and it will be hard because my signature relaxed pixie cut has become such a big part of how folks perceive me. but I'm ready to rock on my terms! thank you for being an inspiration!

I just now saw your video and it wasn't hard to watch but refreshing, because this year of 2016 has been the hardest for me. I'm 17 years old and I dyed my hair from red to now blonde. Taking college classes, going to high school, and work I had no time for my hair which is part of me and when ever I did touch my hair, combed and brushed it there were soo much damage and breakage that has been done. I came to the conclusion that when school ends i want to shave it all off, and watching your video is very touching. I had my emotionally break downs and stress due to personal situations but i think it's time to let go and I Thank you soo much. ❤

Even though I Mexican man, I know my identity and intersections are different from yours. But that we may or may not experience the same or just trauma in general. And when we want to heal or dis associate from drama we want to change our selves. Physically mentally everything. Our old or current image hurts us due to the trauma we faced in that identity. So changing how we look alows is to move on or past sometimes forget our trauma. Gratitude towards you. -you’re amazing and strong. Both in and out.

I did this when I was 27 I am now 45 and I love my nearly bold look more now than I did then. I was very vain about my hair, but I got to the point of being over relaxers and chemicals in my hair. When I cut off all my hair I felt truly beautiful for the first time in my life. My advice to any women thinking of doing this is to be sure it's what you want and realize that at the end of the day it's just hair, it grows back.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a hater. I applaud brave authentic women. But make no mistake, chocolate girls and women with 4c hair and whose hair journey is compounded by various forms of Alopecia have their own distinct burdens, unlike anyone else. They do not grace the covers of magazines, or hob nob with Hollywood elites. We are the average young, not so young and o.g. sistas (which I am) who shave our heads for medical purposes; which is often exacerbated by social stigmas. . . We don’t have the luxury of shaving our heads just to start a “new chapter”. We simply have no choice. However, what we have discovered in the process is that we are much more than our hair. That is why I choose to remain nearly bald for the duration… why not?
