Male ducks go through "puberty" as they become fledglings. Thy literally lose their voice for a certain period of time until their voice boxes mature. Although most ducks make a quacking or a rasping noise, wood ducks are different. The males squeak whereas the females sound like one of those sliding whistles. It's really cute to listen to. :)

Augh! That e-mail guy is so vexing because he doesn't address the PURPOSE for why such a change occurred! Here's a (poor) but acceptable human-equivalent WITH a 'purpose' answer: Q: WHY do male humans have deeper voices than females? A: Males have thicker vocal cords than females due to the effects of testosterone. In fact, the more testosterone exposure they've had, the thicker the cords and deeper the voice. Q: HOW does this occur? A: The ever-famous 'Adam's apple' is formed by thyroid cartilage and is the second of three prominent bumps visible (almost exclusively) in males through the skin of the throat. (The first 'bump'--located at the top of the throat-- is the Hyoid bone, and the third 'bump'--located at the end of the throat--is the Circoid cartilage.) The Adam's apple protects the walls and frontal part of the larynx (A.K.A., 'Voice box'), including the vocal cords located directly behind it. Even though females ALSO have thyroid cartilage, they don't have much in the way of an 'Adam's apple' the way males do as it is MUCH thicker and therefore more externally visible in males due to the effects of testosterone: During adolescence, testosterone causes the thyroid cartilage, larynx, and vocal cords to grow thicker. Consequently, the 'laryngeal prominence', as the Adam's apple is properly know, grows in size mainly in men. All of this put together creates a larger soundboard for vibrations to resonate off of and, as a result, the man gets a deeper voice. (Think 'Cello' for males, and 'Violin' for females.) Q: WHAT is the PURPOSE of this difference? A: It is thought that males with deeper voices are attractive to females because it's a short-hand way for them to tell that the male has a lot of testosterone, which generally correlates to OTHER more 'functional' things like higher muscle mass, which in turn translates into a physically-strong male capable of providing and defending for an infant-bound female or whatever. For males, like nearly any other secondary-sex characteristic in the animal world, this allows them to judge the fitness of potential rivals. (Think big antlers: sexy to does; intimidating to less-dominate bucks; a challenge to equal-in-stature males.)
@jennellhickam7912
@jennellhickam7912 5 лет назад
If I had to guess it would be for much the same reason people sound different, testosterone. In males the voice crackles. In women it does not. I'd guess hormones are the reason behind that one as well. It would make sense to me.
@Psybur
@Psybur 5 лет назад
@@jennellhickam7912 Yeah, but WHY the difference; as in what's the PURPOSE? In songbird species that have court-ship songs it is (ALMOST always) solely the MALE that does since HE has to defend territory from other males/attract females. So, it's to be expected that his vocalization capabilities will be DIFFERENT from what we can expect from the females AND it has a purpose. But what's the purpose of the vocalization differences in duck genders?
@KFrost-fx7dt
@KFrost-fx7dt 4 года назад
I figured that with ducks, since the male is bright and colorful it would behoove him to be quiet, while the female can quack loudly because she is more camouflaged.
@iloveamerica1966
@iloveamerica1966 4 года назад
Psybar One step further more general: survival of the fittest: e.g. humans with more protection in the throat area likely survived fights and retained the ability to breath and procreate; human males that had less protection in the throat area...well, they got their throats bashed in our ripped out and thus...had much, _much_ greater difficulty procreating. Offspring of males with more protection in the throat area passed on those genes. Same for prominent bones around the eye. Bottom line: animals that survive and procreate; animals that don't survive don't procreate and doubt pass on weaker genes. So, test question: why then do most modern male humans have massive erections first thing in the morning at the same time as their kidneys are full? Answer: male humans that had smaller bladders and no erection went out in the middle of the night and eliminated their waste and were then eliminated by whatever prey animal (or freezing conditions or blinding /confusing conditions) was waiting for them. Male humans who hesitated to go outside either because larger bladders or that 1 oz extra that an erection allowed, stayed in and passed on their genes for both characteristics!) Could have been psychological, too. Guys who were to afraid of being seen with their male part waited. Guys who didn't have the big male part went out to urinate and perished due to whatever hazard presented itself.
@iloveamerica1966
@iloveamerica1966 4 года назад
@@Psybur Why??? simple: male ducks that quacked too much became prey; corollary: male ducks that didn't quack incessantly (even if it's because their Billy Ray Syrinx was malformed & prevented quacking) couldn't be located by predators as readily, so they survived and got to pass on their genes...including the ones fur the deformed syrinx. (or...the quacky male ducks were unattractive to females who didn't like what they quacked about.) OBTW, this works for _everything!_ Whenever you ask why an animal or plant is the way it is, or why it has that part or shape or characteristic?, the answer is always the same: Because, its parents survived because in some way that part, shape, or characteristic helped them survive in some large (or small) way and allowed them to procreate, thus passing on the genes for that part, shape, or characteristic, even if it was or included a mutation. Unless, of course you're a creationist, in which case god ordained it.

Morgan's ducks don't fly because they have been bred not to do so. Especially the Pekins, they have been bred for decades to be large meat birds, as well as egg layers. So they are too FAT to fly. Unlike humans ducks in the wild only eat as much as they need, we, of course, eat whatever is placed in front of us. (Grin) Wild ducks stay trim, what a wild flock, they expend a lot of energy searching for food. So they stay slim and can thus fly. I've seen some domestic breeds fly, but they usually don't go very high or very far.

@nutellamonster5013

Domestic ducks are about twice the side of wild ducks. Their bodies are too heavy to fly because they were bred that way. Or the wings were clipped. Or maybe they’re just good ducks haha.

Nice video, but I think the reason drakes and hens have these anatomical difference is for evolutionary perposes, maybe the hens need the high pitch sound to attracte drakes during mating season or something that have to do with alerting for predoters

When I was a kid on a school field trip, we went to a farm. A kid said they just got ducks but didn't know if they were boys or girls and asked how to tell. The farmer said, as you did, only the girls quack etc. When asked why, the farmer said it was like recess. All the girls are talking, laughing, singing and the boys are mostly doing the same. Boy ducks however are looking for danger and yells when he sees some. If he sounded like everyone else, it would take a long time to hear him. Just like when your teacher yells for you to come in. You can hear her voice over everyone elses. Her voice is different. All these years I never gave it another thought, lolol

Wait, people still ask why farm ducks don't fly? That one is an easy one to google. Some breeds are just too heavy, and others too lazy(free food and shelter in one location? why bother leaving?) Think there might be a few breeds that just got too small of wings as well

Hey, Hoss.....did you ever consider asking people who hunt ducks? English Callers were bred specifically for their hens to call wild ducks into gun range, when live decoys were allowed years ago in the USA(still legal in the Netherlands.) Google it and learn some more.👍

I remember reading that domestic ducks can't fly because of larger chest muscle mass for increased meat production and more solid bones to SUPPORT said larger chest muscle mass. Weirdly enough, domestic geese CAN fly, although they tend to walk more up-right due to more muscle-mass development in their 'butts'--for lack of a better word--which makes them more bottom-heavy.

So that's why they can't quack but why did they evolve like that? And why don't muscovies quack?! Although I'm very happy about that as it means I get to have ducks and my neighbours don't even know 😁
@GoldShawFarm
@GoldShawFarm 5 лет назад
As far as muscovies go, I know they are a more distant cousin compared to other ducks. As far as why the evolution, like most things, I bet it has something to do with mating. Like maybe the call is how the females attract the males over a distance.

Due to origin. It is (to me) a very interesting story that starts with 15 shi-chin-ya-tze (or 10-pound duck) from China, a Mr Palmer (1872), a proposed business plan, ships, stolen (presumably consumed) ducks, and the eventual arrival of just 3 hens and one valiant Drake, chez Mr McGrath (the partner in NY) shortly after their 13 March 1873 arrival (with 3 more hens and 2 more drakes--totalling 9--who managed to survive months at sea, but couldn't survive days on land)(hmm...)and who, by July of said 1873 had managed to lay over 300 eggs establishing themselves as a duck presence to be contended with. Yummy. 10-pound duck, from Peking, currently Beijing.
