Thanks for mentioning my carrier’s May, 1964 operation to overfly and photograph French Nuclear facilities on Mururoa in the South Pacific. You are correct that there was some wingtip scraping on landing, but there was a full team of U-2 specialists onboard my USS Ranger CVA-61 for this exercise and Dragon Lady took off without problem or catapault assist. On takeoff, to prevent what we called ‘wing list’ a pair of ABHs literally held each tip as the U-2 gained speed/lift. Nice shots of Primary Flight Control by the way, a much neglected control Center on the ship. There are four main aviation control centres: Primary Flight Control (PriFly-control within 5nm), Carrier Air Traffic Control Center (CATCC-control from approach/marshalling to 5nm), Flight Deck Control (The Board- control on the Flight Deck/launch), and Hanger Deck Control. Both launch and landing are coordinated by PriFly and The Board.

I was a Crew Chief on the F-15 for 12 years, the tailhook is for emergency use and as a hold back for maintenance engine runs.
@fredmdbud
@fredmdbud Год назад
The tailhooks on US Air Force planes are not for carrier landings, they are for emergencies to bring the plane to a rapid stop on the ground, such as a landing gear/brake failure. One example is the Australian F-111 that had to land its belly because the gear would not extend - it caught the arresting wire just feet off the ground, which prevented it from sliding beyond and off the runway.

As I stated I had the best time of my life over there. From the time I stepped off the civilian chartered aircraft in spring of 1988 and met my VQ-2 sponsor till the day I had to leave because of medical issues in spring of 1990. Crazy thing to is my wife is from the Azores to which I’ve visited in the past. We are planning a trip to Rota, Andalusia, mainland Portugal and The Azores this summer. Anyways I had to leave Spain abruptly due to injuries and was medically retired from the Navy. Part of me will always feel like I left a little bit of me behind in Rota. Thanks Mark! ✌🏽🇺🇸🙏

@@Knuckledragnation Mark, I arrived on a cold Saturday and was met at the terminal by the duty driver, and taken to the squadron and check in. Went to the barracks, which at that time was kitty corner from the base theater. I then walked off base, making it to the Virgin del Mar where I saw the sign Base Naval, and it was pointed back from where I came from. I never got lost again. After my stint in 1st LT Div, I was the mid-watch duty driver for a bit and then ended up on the 2nd deck back in comms. Back in my time, it was all the way aft and to the right. July of 74 we had the "Admirals" plane Double Nuts go down in Naples on takeoff, taking everyone. It was my first experience with the tragedies of the military. We also had another A-3 snap a wire on the Sara, and she pancaked into the water. Floated long enough for all the aircrew to be safely recovered. I met my wife while in Rota and we are going to celebrate 48 this coming year. I would like to go back but they no longer allow Space A travelers to debark in Rota, so if I want to do that I would have to fly out of DC and over to Jerez. I later came back to Rota for a second tour but this time I was out at Bldg 8 the Commsta since I was a Radioman. Was great to be a black shoe in an Airedale command. It was a great command and I forever cherish my time and memories. BTW I am a Mark too Mark

@@edwardweeden8837 yes! Ironically the F14 was actually designed somewhat form the F-111B program. The subcontractor for General Dynamics was Grumman. So the GD group was working on the F111A for the Air Force, Grumman was working on the F-111B for the Navy...but the plane was waay over it's 80,000 weight limit and the program was canceled. Not that the Navy thought the F-111B program was what they felt they needed in the first place but you can blame Secretary McNamara for that! Since Grumman was already working on the F-111B replacement they were allow to make a few prototypes to prove to the Navy that they could build a far better plane for the Navy requirements. 1) the Navy jets are heavier because they must be designed for a "controlled crash" on EVERY landing (which I have experienced) so their frames and landing gear are stronger and more robust than any equivalent Air Force plane. And they experience almost equal forces when launched by the catapult systems. 2) The C-130 is an exception to almost ALL other military aircraft because it can use it's engines to back up, allowing it REVERSE thrust when landing to slow it down. 3) Navy pilots have been shown to have higher blood pressures and heart rates when landing at night (fewer lights, moving ship and angled deck) than when in actual sir-to-sir combat (plus they have to find their ship first).

What an all encompassing video! At least 99% of the audio is WRONG. The F-15 has 12,000’ concrete landing gear. Its little skinny gear, not being designed for carrier durability, would look like tin foil after the first and only trap the aircraft would ever make. It is a great aircraft all around: but not designed for carrier ops. Just imagine an Air Force pilot actually surviving the trap aboard the ship. He/she would be searching for the missing 9,700’ of runway. Then there is no bar, no exchange, the swimming pool is over the side, no tennis courts. Then they would look around and gasp “You do this kind of s - - t at night too?” End of USAF trying to be forced aboard aircraft carriers. 🤬🤯🤮DGBryan

"the weight of an F-14 is nearly 3 times that of an F-15 when fully loaded." Not quite true! The empty weight difference between an F-15 (A-D model; C model was 28,000 lbs empty) and and F-14A (40,000 lbs empty weight) was about 12,000 lbs. That weight difference is accounted for between the carrier landing requirements for the F-14 (which raised weight a minimum 3,000 lbs in structural beef and heavier duty landing gear) and the wing sweep mechanism to make the F-14 more aerodynamically efficient across its flight envelope (which mostly accounts for the rest of the weight increase over the F-15). There's very little difference between max loaded weight of the two planes. The F-14 catapult limit was about 72,000 lbs and a bit higher than that taking off from land (close to 73,000 if not 74,000 lbs!). A max loaded F-15C (3 external drop tanks plus 2 conformal fuel tanks) is 68,000 lbs. An F-15 can carry a total of around 33,000 lbs of fuel divided between internal capacity (roughly 13,450 lbs) and the 3 drop tanks and conformal tanks.

First they compare some specs of the F14 and F15, but only if the F15 wins. No mention that the two fighters had vastely different design roles. Nor that the airframe, landing gear, and tail hook to handle landing on a carrier weigh ALOT to handle the stress. Then they try to compare landing an F15 on a runway with a completely different wire system to an F14 landing on a carrier. The F14 lands at a faster speed, just in case the pilot misses the 3 wires. When it lands, it has much less area to stop in with a very hard carrier island just to the right (starboard), a steel wall (stern) if the pilot comes in too hot, a really big swimming pool is the pilot comes in too far to the left (port) and possible other airplanes, helicopters, equipment, weapons and personnel close by. Not just an apples to oranges comparison, but an apple and pear to an orange and grape comparison. Like others have commented a waste of 15 minutes.

You are not comparing like with like. For a start the F14 is heavier to withstand rough landings on aircraft carriers which are inevitable in some weather conditions. Add to that the swing wing which adds a significant amount. The F14 also had a much more powerful and therefore heavier Radar. Then of course the Phoenix is a very heavy (for air to air) missile. . So the hard points need to be stronger therefore heavier. The F-14 also had the somewhat heavy kit for catapult launch too. Also the F-14 could fly 100NM out loitre for 4 hours in a CAP and I cannot imagine an F-15 doing that without re-fuelling. In fact with only a little more than a 1000nm range for the F-15A in combat configuration it would be struggling to patrol for 2 hours and still have naval reserves (more than USAF reserves due to deck landings incurring so many wave-offs in bad weather). So they are not even close to being the same thing.

Seriuosly....f15 aren't that hard to land on a carrier. It's just a wear on the equipment. The United States has landed a AC-130 successfully on carrier multiple times. just for the fk off it. Just so we know we could in an emergency.

In other words. The US Air Force is training its pilots and crews how to land its aircraft to land either on short runways or aircraft carriers in preparation for an upcoming conflict with China and Russia, likely within the next 12-20 months.

Aircraft such as the F15, F16, or the stealth aircrafts (assuming they are equipped with a tail hook) could possibly land on an aircraft carrier ONCE! It is a certainty the airframe would be overstretched, likely one or more tires would blow out and the landing gear would be broken. Naval aircraft,designed for catapult launch and arrested landings are very different than land based equivalents, the landing gear is orders of magnitude stronger, the entire airframe is overbuilt to withstand the much greater stresses of carrier operating conditions.

IF McD could modify a F-15SE to a Naval variant would be wonderful. BUT congress will never allow the defense contractors to miss out of 20 years of R&D and hundreds of billions of dollars wasted. The F-22 and F-35 were colossal wastes of taxpayer money.

@@kenharty6016 the frame was mainly made out of aluminium, it would be hard to make it lighter. But with modern tech there can be less wires but so would the F-15 which it does now. The F-14 was a great plane overall, and it also beat the F-15 on multiple occasions, but it had its prime.
