The Reason You’re Always Rushed and Stressed

Have you ever asked yourself why you’re always stressed and in a hurry? A questioner says his habit of hurrying results in a busy mind and bodily tension. This makes it difficult for him to abide as awareness. What causes this stressful behaviour and what can he do to get back to equanimity?
Rupert says - it is because, when you're hurrying the larger part of your attention is focused on the end result. You are escaping the now in favour of the future. Why is this? Because the separate self has to resist the now in order to survive, so it is always taking you away from it.
So, the remedy is not discipline yourself or change your behaviour - just be knowingly the presence of awareness without resistance to this moment. You, awareness, surrender these sensations to the space of awareness without trying to get rid of them or improve them. Slowly the tension will dissolve and the sensations will go back to their natural condition of equanimity and harmony because you are no longer supporting this dynamic drive towards the future.
Your mind, and in time, your behaviour will begin to follow suit.

Its like when a child is eating a chocolate, he anxiously anticipates its end and thus never fully enjoys the chocolate. This anxiety is the basis of all human experience. When one is having a pleasant experience, whether it maybe the delicious food, scenic view, a movie, an activity with another person, one starts to hurriedly anticipate/worry about its end and therefore loses its enjoyment. It is amazing how he explains with ease. It takes a life time of understanding and when you do it seems so obvious.

I pondered this question myself some time ago and arrived at the following conclusion: I decided to refrain from multitasking. Now, when I'm driving, I solely focus on driving without any distractions like the radio. While cooking dinner, I dedicate my attention solely to the cooking process. Similarly, when I'm eating dinner, I focus solely on enjoying the meal. I strive to approach each task as a form of meditation, where I give my undivided attention to the task at hand, just as I wouldn't listen to music while meditating. The objective is to fully engage with the present moment and give my complete capacity to the specific task. That’s my way of trying to combat this issue, hopefully it helps someone.

I'd be careful with the act of deliberately being attentive at the moment because that requires effort, and effort is doing and doing is energy. Just be there in that moment, that's all, there should be no effort of any kind just presence. If the goal is to deliberately be attentive, then the moment a distraction comes along you may resist it and you are no longer at ease. Just sharing my experience.

Interestingly, this young man at the outset made a connection between his behaviour and that of his father. I can relate. Even now, carrying out tasks, there is a hard taskmaster, judging and criticising my ability or efficiency or capability and I can trace that voice back to my mother who when I was a young teen would shout, “You’re no good and you’ll never be any good”! So the anxiety and stress and agitation around getting anything done, even though she is long gone, lives on. These harsh taskmasters are passed down through generations from grand parent to parent to child, relentlessly. I can say that it’s not about not living in the now, it’s about fear of judgement. And I am not saying that this is the case with this young man though his early comment about being like his father, rushing to get through a task struck a very strong chord.
@lindalangdon9406
@lindalangdon9406 Год назад
I understand exactly what you are saying here about the conditioning that is passed down generations. My mother hated children, never wanted any and was mentally cruel to me. I was an accident and she never let me forget it. Growing up she was everything I didn't want to be. I set my mind to not be like her and yet I have found the residue of her in me time after time. Like it's there against my will. I'm grateful I am aware of it, can see it and I don't have to unconsciously react to the baggage she left me and apparently was left to her by someone.

This is exactly what I needed. Been struggling with this. I can be in the now when I’m doing something I enjoy. It is the tasks I dislike doing that stress me out and make me want to get thru them as fast as possible so I can do something else. So the solution is not wanting to be anywhere else but here doing exactly what I am doing, not because of the task itself, but because I am enjoying my own presence. Thank you.

Being at ease and not feeling rushed or in a hurry is completely natural when I am doing my own activities or when I am alone. The conflict arises when I am put into an environment where one must hurry and be in a rush, such as the workplace. There is a reasonable pace one can work when the workplace is mildly busy or not at all, however when there is a rush there is this huge sense of urgency, hurry, and tension in the air and the result is a noticeable decrease in service and accuracy all for the sake of speed. I feel that if one did not change the pace of working all of this can be avoided, but the tradeoff is a slightly slower rush with lesser mistakes and no tension. I'd like to communicate this at work but I am fairly certain it will heard and not applied.

For me my life goes on, I am mostly chasing ego it seems,but there is another understanding where even the thought of changing this to become more present is always going to be 50 yards down the path, because that is what it is presented here to me, with cooking and cleaning, nothing is outside of this

I just heard an Eckharte Tolle clip on this same topic. When I am present (acknowledging my awareness), I can see my role in situations very clearly. Remove the arrow (suffering) & not be concerned about where it came from or who shot it was my take away. ...and if I am really clear. There is no who. There is no there. There is no future, etc... Only always NOW.

Thank you Rupert. I have come to you in moments where i pushed my seperate self to a point that I finally felt like the only way through was through acceptance, what I would call radical shift. Not the self help, that on the surface makes some symptoms easier and continues to subtly control its surroundings. There is not much on surrender.. and my seperate self is terrified of letting go. Living in awareness resonates most deeply. I would love to ask you a particular question for addressing at some point. Would this be possible?

They are not conscious. They literally don't know what they are doing, they are just doing it, without being aware of it. If you are consciousness you also know what you are doing. When you are trapped in a belief or a reaction or an emotion, we usually aren't aware enough to choose anything else, because that specific tendency or action seems like the only thing that is. So we don't know what we are doing. We are just doing it
