I grew up living in a yurt in the 80's in b.c Canada. 🇨🇦 Both my parents who are divorced live in yurts. They are very different designs. My dad's is very minimal. One open room concept. My mom's is more a cabin with a bedroom, bathroom and built out kitchen. They are both completely off grid. I have spent a lot of time in different yurts, in different climates. There are a lot of yurts on the west coast of B.C in the rain forest that hold up just fine. Im living in Oregon now.. there are so many beautiful yurts here,, and it's very rainy! There are endless ways to set them up. Just some food for thought. Not to say that you should have a yurt in Panama. Just that not all yurts are created equal. ❤

You didn't say if you checked for mold, the "rain forest" lacks the humility of the Southern US, & did you check all those yurts in B.C. for mold? My X husband got mold in his home, which caused him to get MS, & cancer, & killed him in his mid-50's Aug 2021. Not everyone will react the same to mold, & there are hundreds of different types, IMO, you're gambling with your life when you gamble with mold. Mold has destroyed much in body, in a completely different state than my X, who is the Father of my only child & was my best friend in spite of the divorce, & we met 1988, meaning I knew him my entire adult life with no words to express the hole his death left in my life & how deep my grief is. I didn't realize it was the mold & not the MS that killed him until I read mold causes MS. He had a stem cell transplant, overseas in one of the best hospitals in the world, but he didn't get better, because he still had undiagnosed mold in his system, so he continued to get worse & passed a few yrs later/I hope this helps someone somewhere because the role mold plays in illness in the US is significant, even with the best medical care they 99% of Drs will overlook it because they aren't trained to look for it, the studies are lacking & even the CDC is unclear on how many people are affected. Much Love All

Hey guys. Before scratching the Yurt idea, really research it. There are ways to vent, to put mezzanines in for bedrooms, to add bathrooms. After checking the options you may still not really want a yurt, but don't turn it down till you research it. You might be missing out on something. Glad you had a chance to get out with Sadie and Lola. Sadie is so responsive, it's all good. Stay safe and healthy.

Yes, Yurt kits can be bought hard sided, with metal roofs, windows, complete and ready to finish off inside. There are so many choices today. I wish they would research it further.
@gailhitson6722

The larger ones have a polyurethane dome at the top that can be opened part of the way. Most come with windows, some with french doors. Nice Yurts are no slouch, they can be artistic and beautiful. Some have movable wall panels that can be detached, letting the owners change their configuration. One can always board or panel the yurt in, outside and inside. The collest thing about yurts to me is how their round design eliminates a lot of the supporting structural elements and costs for construction.

Yurt wasn't meant to be a permanent living space in cold humid climate. All the Mongolian and central Asian steppes are dry, get very cold in winter too, but not humid. They also never stay in one place. They migrate to warmer places, following the horses for greener pastures.
@inertproductionsalternate9114
@inertproductionsalternate9114 2 года назад
Yurts(actually called gers in mongolia) were developed for a nomadic lifestyle in a dry and windy environment. Doesn't suprise me that a ger that probably hasn't been moved in years vs the 4 times a year they are moved in mongolia is having mold issues. Also seems the canvas is cut differently from the traditional ger.
@TheDonaldCoyote
@TheDonaldCoyote 9 месяцев назад
Probably had more to do with how this looked like just a layer of canvas on the wood frame. The traditional ger I worked with had a light liner, then a layer of felt, then 2 layers of canvas. I didn't stay in it, but layers like that (especially felt) would have a huge effect on moisture management, among other things...

I find yurts most enjoyable when they're on property with gardens and gathering areas outside. I strive to be a minimalist, but as a homesteader with three children, there's only so much downsizing we can do until the kids are grown and gone. I can't imagine stuffing our crew of five, plus two dogs and two cats, into a yurt these days. Serious "We Bought A Zoo" vibes. 😂 Love & Light from Mississippi. Please review your time in the Yurt while Kaylie is talking to Sadie & she vocalizes while looking at her mom. Go to minute: 6:45 When she says “Hi”. Sadie actually spoke her first three words, “I love you.” I’m a retired private duty pediatric nurse of 44 years & “Yes” babies talk early when their family, especially parents speak clearly to them, even as infants. Congrats Mom & Dad. My two children, adults now, were vocalizing at 8 months and were very articulate toddlers. Early speech interactions makes for brilliant children. We’re Cajun from Louisiana & at least 5 times a day my inquisitive toddler would ask me questions saying, “Meh, why Mom?”

Love that you guys are knocking off different styles of living. On your property you have said countless times that you are on hill and its crazy windy and with that in mind have you ever thought of building your house into your land, digging half of it into the hillside and windowing the other side with that awesome view, keeping the roof of it as flat green space. Just an idea that would be fantastic. Love the videos from the day you bought the bus, will continue to watch.

Thank you for the help, I was researching YURTS to get out of a moldy environment! And my X husband died Aug 2021 from MS caused by mold, because the MS was treated with a stem cell replacement, but the mold wasn't treated properly & continued to cause to damage until it killed him. If you are reading this please research disseminated mold disease, it is not just people with suppressed immune systems who are severely affected by mold, it may be the type of mold, the length of time exposed, the method of exposure, but it can kill a perfectly healthy immune system by causing MS, cancer, etc etc. You may have saved a life here. I'm already suffering from severe mold disease, I hope you removed your baby & family ASAP from any moldy drafts, walls, etc. I was friends with my X all of my adult life, it's a terrible needless way to lose someone you love so much. I do understand why you don't want a Yurt, But there are different things that you can have in a Yurt, like A glass dome at the top of the roof that not only allows more light in but they can also open for ventilation, I have watched others that have built there own Yurt and the differences can be incredible. you can build a platform inside the yurt for something like seasonal clothes and tools, one couple also built a small bedroom cabin so they used the Yurt for eating, working, and relaxing in, just have a harder look into it before you dismiss the idea,

Great video. All homes eventually get some mold growing either inside or outside. I wipe down our bathroom walls and ceiling a couple times a year with a wet rag and a spray bottle of Mold Armor. The mold wipes off easily. Mold or moss grows on the north sides of tree as well as on the aluminum siding of my home. Wiping it down with Mold Armor is done easily. There's really no such thing as a completely maintenance free home. If you really want to be proactive, you don't have to wait until you see mold, you can wipe things down several times a year or however long you determine works in your area.

Darn guys...I love you more with each video you post. You bring such genuine joy, happiness and love! If there are two people that are more compatible, I don't know where they are. You're going to be such great parents to Sadie and hopefully her future siblings. The only thing wrong with this video is it was too short.

My son put up my yurt in the mountains of Utah in three days. It was a sixteen foot Colorado brand yurt--200 square feet. It was our vacation home for 10 years! I loved it, but it was very difficult to heat and cool. I eventually built a small 980 square foot house. We discussed alternative modes; straw bale, adobe, rammed earth, but ended up with the standard materials. It has been the perfect little house. The yurt became the storage shed.

Just sold my house in Florida moving into the smoky mountains buying land, I’m either gonna put a yurt there, a 40 foot fifth wheel or build a small cabin. I really want to do the yurt but what worries me most is somebody can simply cut a hole and break. I have a lot of nice things!

The good thing with a baby bassinet you can hang it from the ceiling to keep them off the floor so they're warmer and easy rocking/swinging!

Loved you guys! I totally agree with you guys about the whole organic products. I get it, products has to have the label “USDA organic”, you know again it’s all about business at this point. You and I know we can grow and processed products organically without the label. I took a tour on an organic farm in California. They say if they don’t certify themselves as an organic farm then they can’t identify themselves as organic even though they are doing the same exact process. And they do pay a fee to have that label on their products.

We are very much an artisanal state, here in Vermont. My father runs a small woodwork shop, my mother knits and crochets, makes artisanal breads and baked goods. I paint. There is a very deep niche for hand made products here in the green mountain state.

A steel or aluminium trailer with sides that fold down to form a circular yurt platform is a cool idea. Ive seen a video of someone who has already made a 5m circular trailer yurt platform.

I've lived on the humid southeast coast of the US for 75 years . Yes, there is mold/mildew in abundance. Certain types of building materials seem to show it clearly but generally it is everywhere. Inside a house it seems to be more problematic. Not only is it unsightly but unhealthy when disturbed. Yet we eat or consume it daily as it lurks on most of our exposed food. Since you have several years of living in "alternative" housing, 2 nights in an American Yurt has certainly added to your experience. I love your curiosity. A fable to follow. When I started backpacking on the east coast, I made the wrong choices for a tent, bedding, clothing including boots, based on a lack of experience and knowledge. I used what the outfitter(I think he sold cars on his off days). recommended. That was expensive advice. My conclusion is that it is best to get on the trail where you plan to hike and during the seasons you plan to hike and ask in real time other very experienced hikers, your age , about equipment, clothing , shoes and food. If I wanted to live in a particular part of Panama:coastal, mountains ,foothills, I WOULD OBSERVE THE SURROUNDINGS AND TALK TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE LIVED THERE MANY YEARS. PEOPLE IN VERMONT can get you started in coffee, cheese and maple syrup. They don't know a darn thing about Panama. Neither would you ask a Mongolian or a Turk about the best type of house for Panama. Good luck. Someone else commented that all yurts are not equal. A SIDE STORY: please indulge me. A friend close to my age wanted to sell his inland family house and 70 acres to a developer. He loved the coast of NC and had spent many vacations there. He wanted to take his profits and move to the coast. I laughed to myself inside. On his last visit to the coast a serious hurricane hit the island where he was staying. This fella, was a paratrooper in Viet Nam as well as a police officer; a tough guy. He said he had never been so scared while the hurricane tore up the vacation island. After selling the property he now lives 4 miles from the house he sold to the developer. Do your proper research.

Ya'll should build an earthship to live in! We're in the same boat as you guys. Living in small spaces, trying to figure out what is best for us up here in NE Washington. Leaning towards cordwood, cob, earthbag, earthen floors, repurposed windows and being able to use glass bottles for ambient lighting. You guys continue to motivate and inspire. It's a joy to watch you both being parents to baby Sadie. Look forward to seeing you guys back in Panama. Merry Christmas beautiful youtube family. Stay cozy and full of love loves. 💙❄☃🎄💖

Thats the 1st thing that I thought of was high humidity and the mold would no be no way an option in Panama. However in Ca. yurts are awesome alternative to the high prices of the housing market here, easy to put up and easy to move if necassary. Looks like be such a fun option for an ARBB weekend (cozy/romantic!) You guys have fun whatever the adventure or circumstances may be. I'm sure Saddie is learning those beautiful traits by your examples. Its going be one of the many great gifts you'll give her as she's growing up. Wishing you good health, love and prayers of abundance joy in this Christmas season! 💚❤🎄

Fun fact: a lot of coffee farmers cannot afford USDA organic certification, or don’t want to use the money on a certification when it could be used to pay laborers/improve farms/etc. However, most specialty grade coffee is organic simply because the farms can’t afford to spray pesticides on their plants. Caffeine is also a natural pest repellent, so there’s less of a need to spray coffee plants with pesticides! Source: I’m a career barista with a fascination for coffee sourcing.

If you take the time to learn how to properly use a woodstove you can get them to burn thru the night. Most people I have watched here on you tube are very novice at it and try putting very minimal wood intot he stove. The idea is to have a bank of coals so you really need to fill it up with wood and when burning good and hot then close the flue half way or 2/3 so that it keeps burning for hours and hours. Take the time to learn how a woodstove works and you will be surprised at the duration and heat you can get from them. Great video keep em coming!

My sister has a yurt next to her cabin in WA. It's only a bedroom with a coffee maker and micro fridge. I never thought to look for mold, but I'll keep an eye out for it. Thank you for the warning.

Jordan & Kaylee, I'm not sure where to provide feedback on the coffee sample, so I guess it goes here. First, thanks for organizing this. It was enjoyable and eye opening. Each sample is good, but there are are differences. The washed and sun dried natural are quite similar and familiar, but I felt the sun dried had a bit more flavor and was more balanced, which I prefer. The fermented is like no other coffee I have tasted. I would liken it to mixing some kombucha in my coffee. It's interesting, perhaps more for a niche market, or at least an acquired taste. Overall, I prefer sun dried natural, which goes fantastic with tiramisu, btw. Thanks again for putting this together and taking us along on all your journeys. Happy Holidays!!
