It's a trend that seemed to start with GTA V, with Rockstar giving recognizable guns like the MP5 and AK fake names. I don't know why they couldn't have just gone the route of calling the guns by generic names like "SMG" and "Assault Rifle"; honestly GTA V and RDR2 feel too far removed from reality with all of the parody names of items and even politicians (apparently William McKinnley isn't even president of the US in 1899 in the Red Dead universe, which I found disappointing considering Red Dead always felt like a more grounded "lifelike" version of GTA).
@@geoechidna In GTA V the cars get fake names as well cause rights and stuff. Also I think Red Dead is set in the same fictional America as GTA cause John Marstons grave can be found in GTA V I think.
@@dustinakadustin GTA & Red Dead are 2 different things. In RDR they mention California, New York, Chicago. They don't say none of those cities or states in GTA
I just love all "action" weapons Bolt action Lever action Pump action! Screw modern day automatic crap The coolness factor of loading every shot manually will always be the best And the click clack sound that comes with it as well 😎
I pretty much agree, bolt-actions and other manually operated guns are a lot more fun to me than automatics. There's just something about the level of interaction with the gun that makes using them feel more substantial.
@@budmeister There were, but it's not like the average everyday citizen had access to a Maxim gun. Even semi-automatic rifles, pistols, and shotguns were barely a "thing" yet in 1899. I'm sure he means "modern" in the sense like AKs, AR-15s and Glocks or whatever (and yeah, none of those designs are "new" but they're modern enough).
Keeping it short, easy to understand and with a great mix of game and real life footage. This video doesn't get the views that it deserves.Great job man!
I wish while using the Litchfield in game your character's hands would actually do the Henry Hop it was one of the first things I tested when i got it.
Awesome vid tons of info, always wondered how the bullets sprung back up into the barrel because I have a similar repeater and I’m glad you mentioned that it hurt your hand because the movies and games make it look easy when in reality it hurts like a bitch doing it fast.
Yeah I always wondered how these things worked too as a kid, just kind of assumed guns just "worked" and never dwelled on it. The actual mechanics are pretty fascinating. And indeed on the whole rapid fire pain, I'm guessing a lot of cowboys had severe arthritis later in life. :P
The toggle link Winchester lever guns like the 1866, 1873, and 1876 are generally much smoother to operate and don’t tend to hurt your hand. The Browning lever guns like the 1886, 1892, and 1894 (the one used in the video) tend to be harder to operate however they’re stronger actions that can handle more powerful cartridges. So it’s kind of a trade-off.
If you can, do try the 66 and the 73. Action is much smoother than in the 94 and just a joy to shoot. You make great videos. Keep up the good work, pardner'!
Fun fact : If you go to the gun store and and check the lanchaster repeater drawing you can tell that the syle of the gun is based of the 1894 winchester repeater. However if you bought the gun the style actally change to a model 1866 winchester rifle. I dont know if rockstar mess this up or just forgetting something
Fabio moscadelli They were chambered in .44 Henry, not .44 Remington Magnum. Also, he says in the video here that he is using the 1894 as a placeholder.
There's no option to play licencing fees, the problem is the TINY chance of Winchester deciding to sue for TRADEMARK infringement as "Winchester(TM)" is a trademark. Winchester WILL lose such a lawsuit, but it will be expensive just to go through the motions and if things start moving then lawyers may say "we have to try to sue even though we'll lose just to prevent the trademark being declared invalid in another trademark dispute".
Yeah it’s all bullshit legal stuff really. The idea that you have to pay to model something when that company should be paying YOU for representation has always baffled me. Copyright law is a fuck. :/
@@geoechidna Ah, only the word "Winchester" is trademarked and only in the context of firearms. Not only can you make a virtual model of their rifle but make a real copy of their rifle as the patent for it expired in the 1870's or something. I wish they had called this the "Model '73".
Yeah I really wish they had just gone with generic names like most of RDR1. It was weird that they went out of their way to rename guns whose manufacturers haven’t either held copyright or been even above for decades, like the Krag. It’s whatever though. At least I know what they really are.
@@geoechidna oh that makes more sense- just picked the game up on PC and was confused to see that the henry repeater does more damage than the 1894 Winchester, even though the henry is chambered in .44 long rimfire.
Well honestly I'm pretty sure the game is still not 1-to-1 with caliber-damage values. To balance the game Rockstar probably made some weak calibers stronger and strong calibers weaker for the sake of gameplay balance.
@@geoechidna you are definitely right! Also I just realized the winchester in red dead 2 is modeled after the 1866 winchester yellow boy repeater- that shoots the .44-40 and holds 14 rounds like the game portrays! This makes more a little sense now that the damage ratings are close between the henry repeater and the winchester in the game. The .44 henry rimfire was a tad bit more powerful than the .44-40 - they did their research well enough! Sorry if i'm boring you just thought i would share.
Yeah they're really well-made guns, it's back when pretty much every rifle was made out of milled steel. The machine and woodwork is better than most guns today.
In the game I’d imagine it’s .44-40 rimfire. Rockstar probably didn’t spend 1000 years modeling the exact correct size of the spent case, but historically that’s what likely was used.
Pretty much, yeah. Newer reproductions of Winchester 1873s and whatnot usually are chambered in .45 Long Colt because it’s still sold commercially. You can always reload, but these days it’s probably not worth the extra cost and effort to make your own .44-40 unless you really want the authenticity.
Pretty much. Live-action rifles were clunky to load and operate for the most part and had weak locking mechanisms that limited how powerful a cartridge fired from it could be. The bolt-action was superior in pretty much every way and by the 1890s made lever guns obsolete. They only really remained popular in America after that, where they are still produced today.
>volcanic designer received no recognition >founders are literally Horace Smith and Daniel B Wesson of Smith & Wesson >key people include Benjamin Tyler Henry of Henry Repeating arms and Oliver Winchester of Winchester repeating arms I’m pretty sure they all received a lot of recognition later down the line.
they were made here in new haven where the winchesters were made at first and all the colts were made 30mins away, they never really produced the volcanic pistol OR repeater for commercial use, you would never see it like you do in-game only fancy people had a few. but the lancaster and litchfield were made from the ideas of the volcanic arms company/new haven arms company. more than half the weapons (colt and those alone) are from my state/city. only the remington springfield and imports arent
I was specifically referring to Benjamin Tyler Henry getting screwed out of the earnings of his own invention do to some shady capitalistic warfare Winchester pulled off. He may have gotten credit down the line, but I doubt he ever saw much revenue from that. Doesn't matter if you're a good inventor if you're dead before anyone cares. :(
He actually does load it through the side, and the casings correctly eject through the top. The only detail Rockstar "fumbled" is the crazy speed in which Arthur loads the Lancaster.
@@geoechidna I saw him load it on the video, that was after I said that, but my game is at the latest update and on my game, he doesn't load all of the guns exactly right. The chamber doesn't even open on some revolvers. And with the Lancaster, I watch the bullets spit out the bolt on the side and then he shows you the bolt while putting bullets in the bottom like a shotgun. I also hate how the goddamn reticle turns red when you aim at something. I wish I could turn that off, so u can play and I don't have to. The thing that has lead me to punch a hole in the wall before is when u get off your horse and your guns stay on your horse. THAT is the SINGLE most retarded thing a game has ever concieved. I cannot even describe the retardation that is the game taking your guns off you after you picked your guns. If u didn't want guns, why can't you just put em away yourself or fucking control yourself
Rockstar probably took a lot of liberties, just like they did with the reload speeds. Scopes were pretty much a rich man's accessory until the 1920s or 1930s and a decent one would have been way out of most Americans' means at the time.
Where is the gun from originally? As the name Winchester sounds pretty English. Also to those who are interested the name Lancaster dates back to the war of the roses. Were the house of york and the house of Lancaster were waring for the throne.
from the volanic arms company right here in my city in New haven, CT... also made the volcanic pistol, then henry/winchester made replicas of the volcanic repeater and turned into the 1860 version (litchfield) and eventually upgraded to the 1866 model(the lancaster), the names are just made up to avoid paying winchester/henry repeating arms
That was the obviously the implication. But even in 1899 better magazine systems existed (the detachable box magazine was invented over a decade before) and the tube magazine was already obsolete. It doesn't matter that it loads faster than a muzzle loader because those were even MORE obsolete by the time RDR2 takes place.
@@geoechidna for the common man it was impractical. Even though detachable box magazines were invented they were extremely expensive to make at that time. Perfect example is the Lee Enfield series rifles. Not only that repeater rifles are extremely reliable in the field and durable as all hell. Yeah Arthur loads at super human speed but with enough practice I eventually got to about half the speed if arthyrs reload rate. Granted I always keep a fair amount of rem oil on it
@@darkanddryhumour1822 I'm not necessarily talking about just detachable mags though. By 1899 both the en-bloc and stripper clip, both extremely cost-effective and good speedloaders, had been in use for years. Even the finicky Krag with its side-mounted loading gate is infinitely better than a tube magazine for barrel harmonics alone, never mind loading. Regardless of your personal skill, I seriously doubt the average guy spent that much time getting good at reloading. RDR, and most westerns in general, weren't indicative of the average shooter in the late 19th century.
@@dustinakadustin Or they "borrowed" the namesake for RDR1 and behind the scenes got approached by Winchester's lawyers. Either way it feels corny as hell and I wish they used the real names.
Nice video, interestingly not all the guns have made up names. There's a smith and wesson schofield in both RDR1 and RDR2 and in the first game the Herny and Winchester repeaters have their proper names.
Yeah but even those have BS manufacturers and inventors if you look at the descriptions in the catalog at the gunsmiths. It's just bizarre and something literally no one asked for Rockstar to do. Really takes you out of the immersion, as if Red Dead is just some parody of the U.S. in 1899 rather than a faux-historical series of events.
@@geoechidna I never looked at it that way, I like that they created their own stuff and it works either way I think. It's probably easier for them to do it this way so they can just avoid all the legal shit down the track.
@@geoechidna I've always viewed RockStar's games as satirical pantomimes of real-world history. The slightly eschewed world also gets me really interested to know the real history behind all that Red Dead II took inspiration from. If all of the weapons were completely historically accurate, then I would have no desire to learn about their historical counterparts. Or, if the city, Saint Denis, were a perfect recreation of New Orleans, then I wouldn't want to find out what the place was really like in 1899.
@@ColtonWalker073 I can see that point of view, but I personally prefer it when they get the details correct. I'd still be googling that shit regardless though. :D
volanics arent "real" pistols that were used... more of a show piece. was made here in my city in a limited amount and the company who made them is long gone
I prefer the Lancaster due to it’s faster reload in combat.since the Lancaster reloads by the side and not the front.but the lit field has slightly longer range and power
@@eaSTS9 That's fine with me, I ran out of RDR2 guns with this video anyways. It's sad that the Lancaster sucks in online, in single player it's basically a perfect all-around gun.
