#TheRedJumpsuitApparatus #FaceDown #Shootingstar
#TheRedJumpsuitApparatus frontman Ronnie Winter tells “The Oral History Of ‘Face Down,’” explaining how the song mended his family’s troubled history of substance abuse and domestic violence, started his band’s success and sparked a birthday visit from his favorite rocker-turned comic-book creator.
In 2006, Ronnie Winter, frontman for the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, wrote #Face Down, his band’s first hit. More than just a radio staple, the song was a personal exorcism for Winter. On this #APTV production, he explained all of the emotional heartache and joy that song represents to him.
“We knew we were going to have a good solid push because we signed a record deal,” Winter says about the success of “Face Down.” “We chose [it] first because we decided that if there was no other song that was ever going to be heard for the rest of our career, we wanted it to be that one.”
Ronnie tells APTV that the song was a manifestation of the domestic violence that he and his brother Randy grew up experiencing. A self-described “lyrics guy,” Ronnie said the words for the song came quickly. (“We’ve only just told true stories.”) He also revealed that his parents were young and inexperienced and resorted to self-medication to make their family work. (“Not everybody gets that perfect red, white and blue, American upbringing.”)
The highly articulate Winter doesn’t sugarcoat his family history as much as he breaks down the pathology of it. Thus, the resonance of “Face Down.” The irony is that while Winter was chastising his mother for her substance misuse, it was she who helped him through his alcohol dependence later on.
Winter goes on to discuss the awkward first time he heard “Face Down” on the radio. It was during a radio promotion called “Kegs And Eggs” in a contest winner’s backyard, where everyone was drinking beer and eating breakfast. He also discusses his personal fandom for My Chemical Romance, citing his love for “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” and how excited #TheBlackParade made him. And then during a festival on Winter’s birthday, #GerardWay went on the #RJA tour bus.
“I will sing #FaceDown until I am 95 years old,” Winter says. “Because it’s about me. And us. And what we’ve gone through.” It’s another compelling story on APTV.

Back in high-school, I had a rock band and our drummer (also known as our band leader) gave me this song. the first time I listened to this song I just don't like it but I LOVE IT! I play this song with my whole heart until now because it is my favorite song. Also, I've never thought I'm gonna meet Ronnie Winter personally way back in 2014. I'm the Vocalist of the band by the way. I love you, TRJA.

I heard "Face Down" for the first time the summer before I started high school in 2005. I loved it the moment I heard it. I eventually lived it in college and reverted back to continuing to love it to this very day. Don't You Fake It will forever be my favorite RJA album.

I love how I already loved this song when I was a teenager. But years after, when I actually experienced being mistreated (nothing physically serious, just very bad partner) by an ex, this song just hit differently and became more relatable. It's one of those songs that gets better with time, and you appreciate it more the older you get.

Huge props to these guys for keeping their music tight and meaningful even after being independent. Been a fan since Lonely Road, and I think they are the most underrated band from their era. Yeah, everyone knows their hit songs, but this band is more than just Facedown or Your Guardian Angel. Their name should be up there with bands like The Used, MCR, Underoath, etc.

@@altpress Casting The First Stone is my favorite post hardcore song from them. They got some good pop punk songs too, like 20 Hour Drive, Kins and Carolls, and Home Improvement. Godspeed is my all time favorite song from them. But I think their most underrated record is their Et Tu, Brute? EP.

Jam Rubio Agulto off topic kind of but just to see if anyone feels the same way I do about their song, “Cat and Mouse?” I made my friend in elementary school learn how to play it and during choir if we got the chance to use the piano she’d play it and it was a full on two emo girl bounding experience that the other girl’s in our class just couldn’t understand 🤣♥️

I'm so glad to see a new interview with RJA and Ronnie, even if its about an old song. Ronnie is such a insperation and I think he is a very interesting guy, interesting things to say. I hope to see more with Ronnie and RJA - talking about their new album for example, or something that would be really interesting that I got fractions of in other interviews is how this new lineup came together. But I am also interested in Joe - he has been with Ronnie in this band since their "breakthrough"... all other members left for different reasons. But he is still here :)

I still listen to Face Down today and it certainly holds up as a great song! It's really nice seeing this band in 2019 on AP, too.
