As writer and director I feel it was important to show how PTSD still can affect a domestic violence survivor even 17 years later. But more importantly I wanted to show how we can recover quickly with tools. This was such an incredible honor to be apart of and as a domestic survivor myself, it was a healing process for me to be able to share this message with you.

I can barely speak through the tears, this song touches a nerve. I've been there too and unfortunately my kids were there. my youngest daughter became a domestic violence case worker at a shelter for both men and women. she got burned out it just killed her and she left for a little while and she was a medical case worker for HIV patients, and then she went back to the shelter to manage it. her heart is there and it's not hard to figure out why, even if you can just save one person, one family. your first video of this song is pretty much what they saw in a regular basis, it is crazy as it sounds leaving was really scary but it's the best thing I ever did. people don't understand your frame of mind my friend came to me and said if you don't want to save yourself save your kids that's all it took......my kids came out great for the hell they went through, I'm always sorry I didn't leave sooner. but you're right with the right tools you understand what happened, why you stayed., and how to change it. PTSD is so real. thank you for making this video I did share it with Elizabeth Elizabeth is also a huge fan. my kids are in a good place they are the most amazing people have ever known

As someone who spent most of my childhood being physically and mentally abused, I agree about the importance of showing how PTSD causes you to relive and feel that pain all over again, throughout your life. Here I am, 40 years old now, and just watching the video of someone else's pain, put me back into that space of lying on the floor, hoping for an end. Years of therapy and a spouse that was willing to help whatever way they could, have helped me a lot with dealing, but that torture never truly goes away sadly. Everyone working on this did an incredible job, thank you for bringing us a new vision for this great song.

Unfortunately Emo is dying. Maybe not in us, but in our friends we lose to suicide, those lost to alcohol and drug use. I had to write a friend who was injured in an accident involving substance abuse about how I’m not leaving (them) behind, I’m waiting for them to catch up. I had to bury my brother’s best friend. I have a friend who killed someone when they were driving drunk. The story doesn’t end with my friends, my family. The story ends when the abuse ends, and it’s a long harrowing road. Never be afraid to offer support, never be afraid to stand in defiance, never be afraid to be a voice of the voiceless.

I'm a DV survivor with a PTSD diagnosis. I was a teen mom and I barely escaped my ex-husband with my life in 2001. I've recently purchased my first home, been promoted at work, I'm 3 classes away from a Bachelor's AND my AA degrees and I'm getting married to my best friend in November. I just realized that the lady in this video is the same woman from the original video! When I realized that, it brought me to tears. Her success and newfound happiness is tangible, and seeing that the trauma still sneaks back in to destroy it, resonates in my soul. What an everlasting masterpiece!

I grew up in an abusive home. I watched my mother use makeup to cover up black eyes. Me and my siblings would use “rough housing” as an explanation for bruises when teachers asked if we were ok. When this song premiered on MTV I was 13-14 years old. And I couldn’t believe the wave of emotion came over me. It was one of the first times I realized I wasn’t alone. Fast forward to now, I watched my mom survive and recover from our past and she is now married to the most loving man I’ve ever met. To this day I thank him for helping her. This video was an awesome representation of PTSD and how we can still feel trapped. But with a helping hand and loving people we can keep going. Much love RJA. Come back to Albuquerque soon. ❤️

The song helped make a special piece of nostalgia for me and many others, one that was lost, a long time ago... 2022: Here I am, 13 years later, at the age of 21, listening to a symphonic version of the song I grew up with...those memories came back flooding and my life had changed quite a bit since then. The symphony remains beautiful, even after all this time.

God, every single thing about this is a masterpiece. From the impassioned delivery of the lyrics, to the expertly-done flips between vocal registers, to the parallel of putting on makeup in her new life to get ready as opposed to covering up bruises, to the frenetic confusion of the glass breaking leading to a triggering memory, to the pause while she recovers from her flashback on set (cold water for grounding and pulling yourself out of distress!!! a a frequent technique I use myself!!!!!), to her steps toward self-acceptance through creating art...I am sobbing. Thank you so much for creating this. I am in awe, and things like this remind me why I love and value music and art so very, very much.

I would scream this at the top of my lungs as a young teen when it came out, counting down the days until I turned 18 and could get away. Now I sing it with a smile because I do have a new life, so much better and happier. But incidents will happen that will trigger the fight or flight response, and I'll have to calm myself back down and work through the PTSD episode. 15 years later. Grew up on the original! I went through this myself as a young adult. I can finally say I'm happy with how life has been now and that I've left that situation. The hardest part was starting another relationship and trying to unlearn toxic responses and trying to trust people. This version is amazing and I love every second!

Growing up listening to this song and putting it on repeat my entire life, especially high school, this hits hard now that they have made this version. This is beautiful. Thank you so much for this. 💜 Forever will be one of my absolute favorite songs. I put the original on at least twice every car ride with my husband - I will never get sick of it.

All I really want to say is thank you for putting this song out there, both the original, and the remake. Just..... Thank you.

As a DV survivor, the original version was always my anthem for “just hang on, you can escape when his back is turned”. I won’t go into details, but the last time I saw my ex husband was by far the most exhilarating feeling. The fact that I went 6 states away to start over is irrelevant. But then you showed that she’s found a partner who is loving, makes sure she remembers her coat, & celebrates her achievements with her... it’s 430am, & i’ve just started a new job, have a new partner that lets me be a weird little chaos gremlin... & for the first time in way too long, I finally feel safe. If you’re reading this, & you don’t trust the roof you’re sleeping under, I promise: one day, you will. One day, the sun will rise on the kind of beautiful morning that you’ll sit there, warm drink in hand, & your loved ones slowly starting to stir inside. One day, you’ll look back & go “It wasn’t worth it, but I’m glad it turned out this way.” You just have to see it.

To Ronnie: your songs single handedly inspired me as a child. I never thought I'd ever be able to sing or play guitar but 15 years later, I've already released 6 songs on my own and got some airplay all whilst staying in a homeless shelter recovering from a drug addiction. I'm 27 now, the lead guitar sections in your older songs still inspire me today especially knowing that you wrote them at 18 years old. Dude, I just wanna say that your recovery alone is a shining light, regardless of how big or small RJA are now idc. Just the recovery is enough. Thank you for how your music influenced not only my emotional life but later on, now my musical life. Knowing that you may even see this message is even more mind blowing. Thank you Ronnie and God bless you my friend. Love from South Africa. Trent

So blown away right now. 😭 The outcome of DV and living with the PTSD, flinching, anxiety attack moments, this was honestly a great video to put out to show others the aftermath of surviving that abuse. There’s always a way out !!! Even if cops have to get involved. Theres a way out !!know there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel even if it doesn’t feel like it at this moment. My heart goes out to the woman who went through this, are going through this, are still stuck in this, or didn’t get a chance to walk away from this 🤍

This song made me realize i needed out. Last year with this song, i stood up and left. I love the slow down, it's a deeper truly genuine look at the aftermath. The original, helped get me motivated and angry enough to leave, to see the truth. This version... it's exactly how i feel now. 9 mo +. Been a giant fan of you all since the begining, you've given me strength through the years, a place to belong, learn and turn inside myself. It helped years ago as well, getting out of a young abusive relationship. But after the last one, of 12 years, it gave me perspective once again. Lots of love, lots of strength, moving into better and healthy. Thank you for everything💜

I'm originally from Middleburg and I don't normally comment on videos but felt a strong desire to comment on this one. I'm in the process of ending a toxic marriage. I've been strangled on more than one occasion, kicked in the head and put thru a window, spit on, a broken nose, and many other physical and mental transgressions all by this one person... I normalized this behavior. I defended him. I tried to change my own behavior in hopes the abuse would stop. I tried leaving the marriage many times and each time I went back to him. Why? Fear. I'm still early in my road to recovery and healing. Abusers DON'T change. They lack accountability and emphathy. I was promised roses and given a bouquet of lies and false promises instead. Thank you @The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and your team for this song and these videos. I listen to it multiple times a day as part of my healing process. ❤ I hope one day to see you in concert. How cathartic that would be... "I finally had enough.."

Celebrating a year out at the end of this month. Fled with just a suitcase, nothing to my name, and hid in a cheap flea bag weekly rent motel for four months until I found the perfect little home for myself and my son and I’m doing so well now, but there are days. There are days. Days that I can’t believe I stayed with such a monster for three and a half years. Days that I can’t believe I caved inward on myself there over time, self destructing, instead of leaving, after the first time he added hands to the verbal rages. I can’t believe what I allowed to happen there, the blame that I consistently took for it all, and I can’t believe how strong I was to finally run. I am so amazed by myself. It’s possible to escape and I am so very proud of myself for shaking off his brainwashing and shaking off my self destruction and flying away. We are the only ones who can save ourselves. There is no one coming to save us. I finally understood this. Thank you for this piece of art and healing. ♥️
